Newer (not sure since when) moen cartridges have plastic part at the end of the stem, where as old one had solid brass stem. I found that plastic part is what breaks most of the time.
@@quackassassin2146 I'm not talking about brass cartridge (1200 cartridge). Moen's 1222 cartridge used to have solid brass stem in the center, which are no longer available. Now they have plastic piece at the end and this is the part that actually turns water on/off. Compatible cartridge from Danco does have brass stem like the original Moen design. But, I have some bad lucks with their cartridge dripping new.
So that is how you use the Home Depot extractor! Two weeks ago, I snapped the "H C" plastic tab off the cartridge, while extracting the cartridge. Good visual confirmation on how to do it right! Thank you!👍
Here’s a tip from an old school plumber, who taught me this years ago take a cotton ball tear off a little piece and put it in to some Vaseline and plug that hole for the Allen set screw… the person in the future can just pull it out with a pair of needle nose and you’ll never have another seized set screw again
It’s really 50/50. I have a building full of these. They have the service valves on the side. Sometimes those fail and it’s really fun trying to guess if the water is really off. And the other valves don’t actually work since is a relic of a 10 year old building and the plastic valves probably died shortly after installation. Everything is junk these days. Even these 1222 valves, junk, they shouldn’t just break in the housing. They aren’t cheap to buy, but wholly hell they are certainly cheap.
I’ve had this job NOT go smoothly 😂 hard water can really cement them in! Puller snapped the stem off & didn’t budge the cartridge. Wound up having to mount an entire new setup. Luckily neighbor had a PEX crimp tool & torch I could borrow to swap it all out. The drywall repair around the ascution plate was one of the best I’ve ever done. 😂 so that part of the job went great 👍
I had a brass one in my bathtub and was hard to pull on. used the puller, tried to turn the outside of the valve in the valve body and it would not turn. used the puller and pulled the guts right out of it. An hour later I finished cutting and chiselling (special chisel) the brass part of the cartridge out. Super cleaned the valve body and super lubed the new plastic body valve. We will see how it comes out in a few years; at least the plastic is easier to cut.
I just replaced the cartridge on this exact set. It wasn’t dripping. Hot water only was shooting out full force. Happily, the cartridge came out with much extra effort. Cleaned out the rust and minerals and greased the valve. New one slid right in.
Last one I did the brass stem broke off entirely and I couldn’t screw my removal tool in. Ended up tapping a screw into what was left of the stem and managed to hook on with my pliers and wedge that puppy out
I have a client who just ❤️ LOVEY LOVES Moen. I’m not as sold exactly bc of this issue. And let me tell you what…ALL these mid-line manufacturers, Moen, Delta, P-Pf… all of them are more than willing to load up your design center or plumbing showcase with all their stuff.. pay to build the displays… everything. Don’t be fooled, whether they are worth a $h!t in the long run TOTALLY depends on their distributor local to you and your rep or outside salesperson there. More often than not…at the first sign of trouble with anything you sold for them.. Sayonara you are on your own.
plastic & rubber wearing parts- yah. great idea. rebuild often. just what everyone wants- well, just what service plumbers want anyway. @@rogerenglish7098
Hi there, thank you for all of this wonderful information. I also have Moen fixtures. Is it easy to exchange Moen for other brand fixtures or do we have to keep replacing with Moen? What is the best brand to use? Thank you!
Replaced a couple of similar Moen cartridges myself at my home. One of them was really hard to remove and I had to fight to pull it out 1 mm at a time. When that job was done I was all sweaty.
You don't just yank on the handle, you loosen the large exterior nut thereby slowly pulling the cartridge out. It makes it into an actual puller rather than a handle.
If you have Moen valves you have to exercise them every so often do they don’t freeze up like this. When people have guest baths that they rarely use this happens.
the hot water thing in my tub is like that, i guess i have the same issue, but i have no idea how anyone coukd fix it since its not like that one(well, not in the same position)
I don't even know why they sell especially tool to remove the cartridge pull the pin grab a pair of pliers yank out done so damn easy don't need a special tool for it
i love the statement on the "IF" lol
Sometimes a plumbing job can go smoothly? I find it easier to believe in the tooth fairy! I have tremendous respect for competent journeymen plumbers!

Like anything else it depends on what you want to spend the brass stem cartridges are still available

I like the pan that catches the water. Sure save the shower drain from getting wet.
I laughed out loud on that one
You collect the water and then use it when you take a shit. Just pour the water in the toilet directly and it flushes.
I have the same Moen Posi-temp 1222 and hot water was not working. I replaced the cartridge, and it start working.
Because MOEN IS THE BEST!! Easiest to Repair, Easiest to service.

I love these kind of jobs . can be quick easy money
Get a Uni-pull, I still use the one you’re using from time to time but the uni pull is nice

They do make a brass cartridge instead of the plastic one.

Love the videos bro, keep up the good work.

Nice job fast now I know thanks for letting us know
That job WAS very easy! I finished the exact and job, DIY style, and it took me almost 45 minutes. Hard water DOES suck! 😊
Last one I did the brass stem broke off entirely and I couldn’t screw my removal tool in.
Ended up tapping a screw into what was left of the stem and managed to hook on with my pliers and wedge that puppy out

Same remover i have its still better than the plastic tool they give you with cartage 😂
Best statement ever. Some times, and I do mean sometimes, a job can go smoothly
great swap. good job. two words: AMERICAN STANDARD.
One word, delta

THAT WAS VERY SMOOTH FOR SURE, I HAVENT HAD ONE BREAK OFF IN A LONG TIME.
Cartridges, across most manufacturers, have gone down in quality/longevity while becoming more expensive.
Get the Ona-Puller, made by Barry Walter.
ive had to many times they break off and i have to drill the cartridge out
Would it be better to change the cartridge every few years before they break?
Thanks 4this
I've done this many times over the years as a homeowner, the only thing I didn't know to do was lubricate it. Did he use grease or WD-40?
Why are they using a pan to catch the lark? Is the drain plugged?
Why would you catch the water if it's already going down the drain?
I hope she contacted Moen. They will send her a new cartridge and or fixture! Buy it for looks/ Buy it for life!!
How do you stop hard water from your well from destroying your plumbing
You should use grease on those carts. They wont be so stiff
Good job. Will come n fix my toilet tank it leaks when it’s flushed like the faucet is turned on ? Thanks
Tank to bowl gasket needs to be replaced
Why was there a drip pan? What were they doing with the water? Going to try to recycle it?
Never understood why people use buckets to catch water in the tub ?
How would you fix a shower valve that isn't flush ?
The screw on mine snapped in half in the cartridge and I had to change the cartridge but can’t find the screw to replace
Love how there is a pot in the tub to catch the water 😂
I have that exact one just silver
“Sometimes” just sometimes lol
Do I need to shut the water off from the main ?
I broke the black part in the inside, do you know where can i get this piece
I hate those i have to fix them at work a lot
Brush before installing new cartridges.
You don't just yank on the handle, you loosen the large exterior nut thereby slowly pulling the cartridge out.
It makes it into an actual puller rather than a handle.
You didn't explain anything about putting it back in and adjusting temperature or the on/off
Why is there a pot under the leak?
If you have Moen valves you have to exercise them every so often do they don’t freeze up like this. When people have guest baths that they rarely use this happens.
Sometimes it goes smoothly until it doesn't
Exactly
Looked to be in good condition…my dude glanced at it for a millisecond 🤪💀😂😂
the hot water thing in my tub is like that, i guess i have the same issue, but i have no idea how anyone coukd fix it since its not like that one(well, not in the same position)
You have to have that moen cartridge removal tool. Moen leaves you moaning every time.
I don't even know why they sell especially tool to remove the cartridge pull the pin grab a pair of pliers yank out done so damn easy don't need a special tool for it
Is anyone confused why there’s a pot underneath the leaking faucet…. In a bathtub?? 😂😂
What shower valve do you recommend?
Kohler because they have a nice selection of trims. American Standard is easy to work on also but their trim selection isn’t as wide.
But why the bucket?
Conserve water. We’re in a bad drought
Pain in the ass when they break off inside
Why did she not change the overflow cap, ugh cheap
Moen is garbage. Never able to pull an old cartridge with ease. evern with the puller tool.
No its a common issue with women. Kitchen sink faucet is the ither that gets slammed
What's the pot for?
