Old cartridges do not slide out easily. They are very difficult to pull which is why Moen sells the special tool to make it easier. I think this was an excellent video showing how to replace the part. It was very very helpful for me.
There are times when the cartridges have been installed so long that they no longer slide out with ease when replaced, Moen would recommend that you use cartridge puller 104421. Should you need assistance on a Moen product, please contact Moen directly at 800-289-6636. Our current business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (Eastern Time).
Hello @jennifermorinedwards462. The 104421 cartridge puller will not work if the stem of the cartridge is broken. We would be happy to assist you with troubleshooting the stuck cartridge. Please contact our Consumer Services Center for technical assistance; they can be reached at 800-289-6636. Our current business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (EST).
Good thing I bought the cartridge removal tool. The old cartridge was in there really tight. Also I had a hard time putting back the clip. I had to bend the ends of the clip in a little so it would slide in. Also after pulling out the old cartridge , look inside with a flashlight to see if any pieces of the old cartridge is still inside the hole.
Hello Richardmendonca3756. Depending on how long the cartridge has been installed and the quality of the water, the cartridge puller may be needed to assist with the removal of the Posi-Temp cartridge. Moen does recommend once the original cartridge is removed to clean/flush the valve. If you encounter any resistance with installing the retainer clip, make sure the cartridge is flush with the valve body. If the retainer clip cannot be installed for any reason or it appears to be damaged or broken, the water cannot be turned back on to the faucet until the retainer clip is replaced.
One thing the video doesn't tell you, but assumes you'll know by the video playback, is that when removing the shower handle and putting it back on you need to make sure the handle is in the 12:00 position. If you don't do this, the notch might wind up in the wrong position when you're done, and you'll get the hot water coming on first instead of the cold water.
Hey i found a solution for the valve getting seemingly stuck on fused with calcium deposits and corrosion. Simple vinegar. Use a dropper and some paper towels soaked in vinegar around all parts where you can see corrosion and calcium locking things together. Also use a dropper to get it to seep in to the retaining clip holes. I then used Ballistol (WD40 would also work) using the straying straw to get it to where it could help. When I coupled this with the removal tool, it worked beautifully. Btw this was on a 20 year cartridge that was stuck and seemed hopeless.
Hello Hakan. We're pleased to hear you were able to remove the stuck cartridge. We do recommend using a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water to remove calcification, however, we do not recommend using WD40 on our products. Our product specialists are available for pre-purchase, installation and warranty assistance. They can be reached at 1-800-289-6636 and are currently available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Eastern Time.

Did mine today, sprayed some penetrating oil in last night. Came out in 1 piece under 5 minutes of working it back and forth and pulling. Make sure its clean inside the valve body or it’ll leak like it’s not shutting off al the way.
I also faced the problem where my old cartridge didn't come out. I was worried about damaging everything and so just left it. Having said that, I only later realized that the new cartridge came with a small plastic nut that fit around the old cartridge. It said to use that nut to rotate the old cartridge by a quarter or half turn (I don't recall which) to break it loose. I wish I had read those instructions first, maybe I could have gotten it to work. Or just buy the cartridge puller from Moen. Edit: I've since replaced that cartridge. A plastic nut was absolutely useless, deforming within seconds. The cartridge puller is the way to go.
Pulling used parts straight out is very difficult - and puts a lot of strain on the plumbing. I was starting to fear for my solder joints. The replacement 1222 comes with a plastic nut that slips over the brass center. This enabled me to turn the cartridge back and forth a little bit at a time to loosen the cartridge and work it out enough to be able to then pull it out. The nut is also useful to hold onto with pliers when pushing the replacement in. This video really needs to show that being used. It is an official Moen part and the official Moen video has no reason to not show it.
Hello PantherBlitz. Moen takes consumer comments very seriously and we are delighted to have the opportunity to hear your opinion. The following link provides instructions for the removal and installation of the 1222 Posi-Temp cartridge. solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/1222_Cartridge%3A_Single_Handle_Shower-_PosiTemp
I totally agree, I had to wing it to figure it out. They should have shown us how to use the extracting tool in a real world scenario where the cartridge had been there in grime for some time.
Good morning. Thank you for your suggestion and feedback. We will forward this information along. Please reach out to our Contact Center directly if you need further assistance.
This is the key here. Also, for some reason my old cartridge wouldn’t rotate clockwise like mentioned in the moen printed instructions, but it would rotate 45 degrees counterclockwise using the plastic nut and a wrench. I was able to (painstakingly) remove it then
Hello tonybaloney08. We are sorry to hear about the difficulty you were experiencing with removing the Moen Posi-Temp cartridge. The tool is used to break the seal of the cartridge and can be rotated either clockwise or counterclockwise.
This is a great video. I'm going on Amazon to order the cartridge and the #104421 removal tool. Not taking chances on ruining the valve body and having to pull out the whole shower stall to get replacement access. After these things are in a few years, that cartridge is welded in place with hard water deposits and no more lubricant is around it.

Tip: when reseating the retaining clip, hold on to it as if your life depends on it! My cartridge was a little more into the wall and the clip slipped from my fingers causing it to fall behind the wall. The hurt was unreal. I had to make an extra trip to the store and spend another $6 for that sucker.
Hello danielventura6391. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the installation of a new Moen 1222 Posi-Temp tub/shower cartridge. We are sorry to hear that your cartridge retainer clip fell behind the shower wall. With a deeper in-wall installation of the Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower rough-in valve, loosing your grasp on the cartridge retainer clip can result in it falling down behind the shower wall. If you are the original purchaser of the Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower product, you can contact Moen directly under the product lifetime limited warranty for free of charge replacement parts. If you need assistance with the installation or require a replacement cartridge retainer clip, you can contact Moen product specialists at 1-800-289-6636. They are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Eastern Time.
Good thing I watched another video on this because taking the old one out and inserting a new one is very difficult. I had to break the old one apart to get it out. I think those black rubber pieces on the sides get messed up
Hello Riverplacedad1, I am sorry to hear that you had difficulties removing the cartridge. In the future, if you are having issues removing the cartridge, Moen recommends you use the cartridge puller 104421. Should you need assistance in the future, please contact Moen directly at 800-289-6636. Our business hours are 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Monday through Friday EST.
@@moenfaucets believe me if I had tried using the puller, I would have damaged some pipes. I’m 6’4” and weight 250 so strength or leverage weren’t the issue. It was those rubber inserts on the side of the cartridge (at least from an engineers perspective)
The rubber grommets are used to seal the water and over time the grommets may become damaged and make the cartridge harder to remove. Thank you for sharing your experience and we continue to find ways to improve our customer's experience. If you would like to contact Moen directly for further assistance, please contact us at 800-289-6636. Our business hours are 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Monday through Friday EST.
The steps shown are correct. Removing the cartridge of a used unit however will not go as easy as shown. Find another video that shows using the cartridge puller, as you will need to use one.
Hello @JimPorter-Ir2ms thank you for posting your comments on this UA-cam channel. If for any reason the twisting tool provided in the cartridge does not allow you to remove the cartridge from the valve, Moen would recommend purchasing a cartridge puller 104421. Should you need assistance with a Moen product, please contact Moen directly at 800-289-6636; we are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Eastern Time.
Future fixers, this video is correct if you are replacing a cartridge with a traditional water supply setup (Hot Left, Cold Right). In my case, I have a tub and separate shower that are back to back. The tub is traditional, but the supply lines for my shower are reversed. The H/C for my shower faces down.
Hello and thank you for taking the time to add your personal experience/observation. You are correct! One of the features of the Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower rough-in valve is the ability to be installed "back to back". This would of course cause one valve to have the hot/cold supply lines to enter the valve body "reversed" and would require the cartridge be installed upside-down-when compared to a "traditional" installation.
Before trying tonput the clup back in, i tied a length of thread to the clip. First time I did this job the clip fell down into the wall. Piece of string is a life saver. Oh, rent or buy the cartridge puller!! Nearly impossible to remove the old cartridge without it.
Hello @Hagfan789 thank you for your feedback. If you have questions or need further assistance regarding a Moen product, please contact Moen directly at 800-289-6636. Our business hours are Monday - Friday from 8 am - 7 pm EST.
One commenter mentioned grasping onto the old unit and twisting side to side while removing. I was able to do this with a pair of lineman’s pliers and it greatly reduced the stress on the plumbing. Thanks @PantherBlitz !
Hello @danaboehler2719. The Moen 1222/1222B Posi-Temp Replacement cartridge comes with a twist tool that is used to help break the seal. After removing the cartridge retainer clip, you place the twist tool onto the stem of the installed cartridge, grasp the twist tool with your pliers and twist. The following link will allow you to view additional cartridge removal/replacement instructions and also has a video link for this task: solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/1222_Cartridge%3A_Single_Handle_Shower-_PosiTemp
@@moenfaucetsI bought an OEM moen 1222 replacement from Ferguson and it very definitely does not come with the silicone grease - you might want to check that
Hello Kylepatrick2365. We are sorry to hear that the 1222 cartridge that you purchased was missing the small lubricant packet included with the part. The small packet is 2" x 3/4". Please feel free to contact Moen directly at 1-800-289-6636 for a replacement. Moen product specialists are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Eastern Time.
Good morning. We are glad to hear you were able to replace the cartridge, although it was a challenge. Moen does manufacture a cartridge puller part # 104421 that may make the job a little easier. This is available through your local or online distributor.
Thank you for providing your feedback on how easy removing the Moen PosiTemp cartridge 1222/1222B is with purchasing the Moen puller 104421. Should you need assistance with a Moen product, please contact Moen directly at 800-289-6636. Our business hours are Monday - Friday 8 am -7 pm EST.
Thankfully I had access to a machine shop on site so I was able to make a custom extractor tool. If you don't, buy the extractor tool when you buy the replacement cartridge. You'll wreck your pipes otherwise
Good morning. Moen does make the metal cartridge puller part # 104421. I am glad to hear that you were able to create your own tool that assisted you in the removal of the cartridge. Please reach back out if you need further assistance.
One part I had problems with was the retaining spring, which actually just requires pinching on both sides. If you have problems with it, ask someone else to try, it is easy to get frustrated. Also noting that it probably is best to buy the premium cartridge at 2X the cost, as the 3rd party ones fail early, the last one failed instantly for me. Great video here. Note you may need the extractor tool if you have hard water and if your plumbing often calcifies. The extractor tool can help budge it to get it the rest of the way with the plumber's wrench.
Hello and thank you for your comments and helpful tips that you shared! We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and the things that you learned with the changing of a Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower cartridge.
I just replaced mine & I still don't have any cold or even warm water! I just bought a 5 year old house in Surprise AZ. Nobody gets cold water here because the water system isn't deep enough! It's been 115° all summer!
Hello @user-yh8vn9ms4b. We would be happy to assist you with your Positemp cartridge. Please contact our Consumer Services Center for warranty assistance; they can be reached at 800-289-6636. Our current business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (EST).
All of these videos make it look like the cartridge will just slide right out which some do but some will break the center out of the cartridge requiring a more in depth process involving the use of a tap to thread into the body of the cartridge so you can attempt to remove it by pulling it out while holding the tap. But if you fail and don't have shut off valves at the shower you will have to keep the water shut off in your whole house until you can remove the cartridge.
How difficult should it be to install the new cartridge? The old one without the side gaskets fits back easy but the new cartridge with the side gaskets in place is proving to be a challenge. Everything is clean and applied silicone lubricant and can only get it in halfway. More force makes it sound the the plastic stem is about to break
Hello @DavidSanders-rh2gs, thank you for contacting Moen regarding the replacement of the Moen PosiTemp cartridge. The cartridge should fit tightly into the valve to avoid leaking. Please use the white twisting tool to secure the cartridge into the valve. Place the twisting tool on the cartridge and push back. Not easily is an understatement. When leak happens, the rubber seal has disintegrated, making it really difficult to pull out. In my case, each side was shreded into three pieces when pulling out, and it felt stuck.
Hello @GatorWinup. We are sorry to hear of the difficulty you experienced removing the cartridge. The 104221 cartridge puller is available for purchase, if needed. We are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (EST).
I had to use CLR calcium remover to get my cartride out, took about an hour of inching it out. The CLR dissolves the calcium then we had it out in about five minutes. Put the CLR on it first.
So they forgot some things you might need if you don’t have access to a removal tool: prybar, long bolt, washers and/or socket, WD-40, 2x6. Use these to pull the cartridge out enough to get some channel locks on it and then go to town. Remove all debris and melted rubber fused to the inside of the fixture. Do not attempt to install cartridge until all calcium ridges inside the brass fixture are thoroughly sanded down with Emory cloth. If cartridge doesn’t slide in easily, keep grinding away until it does. My bathroom was a train wreck after that three hour debacle. Video was a help, though.
Excellent. This video (and others) shows them easily pulling the cartridge out with pliers. Not me! I needed to use the white plastic device included with the cartridge, as demonstrated in the instructions. But, I did not need the special pulling tool. Otherwise, done!

My shower started Intermittent dripping 3 years after being installed, I bought another cartridge and when I removed the old one there was a half a tooth pick size splinter stuck in the side opening, I believe that is what was causing the intermittent drip, since I had it open I installed the new one anyway, didn't want to take the chance.
Hello and thank you for your inquiry on the Moen PosiTemp replacement cartridge. If the stem is broken on the Moen PosiTemp cartridge, Moen would recommend you purchase a 7/16" Tap Wrench to grab the interior walls of the PosiTemp shell and you should be able to pull the cartridge out using the handles on the tap wrench. Should you need further assistance, please contact Moen directly at 800-289-6636. Our business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm EST.
Im renting a home and replaced my old keaky faucet with this. The notch on the cartride need to be down on mine or else off meant on. Don't know if I had a defective cartridge or if the builders of the home screwed something up, but it works like it's supposed to now.
Hello @tohrazul. You are correct! As shown in the video, the notched side of the cartridge stem is facing the ceiling. This allows you to easily install the handle with the set screw opening facing the ceiling. After installing the handle and before turning the water back on to the shower the handle and the notched side of the stem are rotated to be facing down towards the drain. Just for demo only. I think the body of cartridges was made by plastic, it would be easily broken when a user wants to replace a new one after years. Taking out a broken Moen cartridge is a nightmare. Moen doesn’t have any tool to support broken cartridges.

Ive changed the part exactly like what was shown and told. After everything was done, water starts dripping and loud rumble when turning to hot water. Is it a faulty piece??
Hello 18klan12. The loud rumble when turning to hot water is caused by mineral build-up and/or debris in the valve body. Hello alexeyg9685. No, you do not need to wait any time after replacing the cartridge to turn the water back on. After the cartridge clip has been reinstalled, the water can be turned back on.
why does the old cartridge have 2 o-rings front and rear of cartridge and the new one only has 1 o-ring in the front? It looks like there is a groove for an o-ring in the rear......i thought about removing an oring from the old and putting it on the rear of the new just for extra sealing? idk
Hello @poppyhimbo. The 1222 cartridge was redesigned, the lower o-ring was eliminated and grommets were changed slightly. An o-ring should not be added to the bottom of the new style. Good morning. The cartridge may not be sealing to the rough in valve. We would recommend removing the cartridge and cleaning and flushing the valve body. solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/Valve_Body_Cleaning_and_Flushing
I destroyed the cartridge trying to take it out. It wouldn't come straight out pulling on it with plyers like they show in the video. I guess there's a lot of calcium buildup in the valve after 30 years. I couldn't get it out until I rotated it pass 180 degrees ripping the rubber seals off the cartridge. Pushing the cartridge also took I lot more effort then they show in the video. The new cartridge failed to seal properly, so the shower won't shut off completely, and I wound up busting the solder joint on the shower head pipe. Maybe the cartridge puller would have worked, but I doubt it. Time to call a plumber.
Hello JetJockFl. We are sorry to hear the difficulty you experienced when replacing the 1222 cartridge. If the cartridge does not pull out, we do recommend using the 104421 cartridge puller to extract the cartridge. solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/Using_a_104421_Cartridge_Removal_Tool
Hello myronalexander4417. The video is for the replacement of the 1222 cartridge and not the installation of the valve. The removal and installation of the replacement cartridge should not affect the plumbing or valve behind the finished wall; therefore, the trim can be installed; however, you can turn the water supply on to the valve once the cartridge clip is installed.

Hello. The 6 o'clock position is always down and the off position. Then you turn counterclockwise through cold water back to hot water. The 9 o'clock position will be full hot water.
Hello @nathanfelix5638. The 1222 cartridge is only compatible with Moen Positemp valves. Moen Product Specialists are available for pre-purchase, technical, and warranty assistance; they can be reached at 800-289-6636. Our current business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (EST)
Had a question that hopefully someone can answer. Having sometimes fluctuating temperature and the whole unit is new. I thought I saw another forum post where someone said if the hot pipe inside the wall is on the right you need to flip the cartridge 180 and then install. Anyone familiar with that?
Good morning. If the hot and cold are reversed in the wall, you should turn the stem of the cartridge 180 degrees. The handle lever should be facing down at 6 o'clock when off and should turn counterclockwise back to 9 o c'lock for full hot water.
Good morning. The brass stem of the cartridge will continue to spin 360 degrees without the handle and/or handle adapter in place. The off position is when the stem that has the notch on the end of it is facing down at 6 o'clock. This will be the off position.
Hello @mrblack6467 if your valve has been installed for a very long time, or you have noticed calcium build-up, Moen would recommend you purchase the cartridge puller to assist you in removing your cartridge in the valve. If you need assistance with your Moen product, please contact Moen directly at 800-289-6636; we are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Eastern Time.
Hello @lisafigueroa7433 and thank you for commenting on the current post. There is a white twisting tool included in the package with the replacement cartridge. While placing the cartridge inside the valve, please use the twisting tool to push the new cartridge into the valve body. If you still need assistance with inserting the replacement cartridge, please contact Moen directly at 800-289-6636. Our current business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (Eastern Time).
Good morning. It is not crucial that the notch on the cartridge is at 12 o'clock to remove the cartridge. You will need to make sure the notch is at 12 o'clock when reinstalling.
Hello @a.j.infowars7582. We would be happy to troubleshoot the issue you described. Please contact us at at 800-289-6636. We are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (EST).
Wish I watched this before reading the instructions... it wasn't very clear there is a notch to indicate whether the valve was on or off. I almost dumped several gallons of water through my subfloor when I turned the water back on not realizing it was upside down.
@avidworkslol Thank you for your feedback on the instructions for the Moen PosiTemp cartridge 1222. I am sorry to hear that the instructions were not clear enough for you, but I am however, happy to hear that his video was of better assistance. Can’t even do the first step. Using Allan wrench but it just turns. Looking inside indict even see what it’s grabbing. So maybe not a bolt in the handle? But the handle doesn’t pull off.
@mickeyleist2891 I am sorry to hear that you are unable to remove the set screw in the handle. For further assistance, please contact Moen directly at 800-289-6636. Our current business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (Eastern Time).
Good afternoon. If the Moen single handle shower or tub/shower unit only rotates to go from cold to hot water, this is a 1222. If you need to troubleshoot further, please reach out to our Contact Center at 1-800-289-6636 Monday through Friday from 8am-7pm EST.
Good morning. Once the cartridge clip is removed, it will be a hard pull on the brass stem to remove the cartridge. Please reach back out if we can be of further assistance.
What would cause the tub to still drip? I’ve changed out the cartridge twice thinking the first one was maybe defective . But it still continues to drip. I don’t want to force the handle to the off position too hard as it might break something inside that is plastic. This all started because the Caulking on the diverter was coming off so I decided to take it off and clean the old caulk off and recaulk! @moenfaucets even sent me a new diverter House is almost 11yrs old. The only thing I might try is to use an actual oem cartridge but the cart before was a danco and worked. Was replaced about a year ago. So I don’t think it’s has to do with brand.
Hello @DJMEDIC671. When changing a Moen tub/shower cartridge, we recommend cleaning & flushing the rough-in valve prior to installing the new cartridge. The following link will assist you with that process: solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/Valve_Body_Cleaning_and_Flushing Additionally, we always suggest using Genuine Moen parts in our products. While the Danco product you purchased was manufactured by that company to work with Moen products, we always recommend using OEM parts! For additional assistance with this issue, please contact us directly at 1-800-289-6636; our product specialists are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Eastern Time. Hello @johnbarrows2549. Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower trim kits require a 7/64" allen/hex wrench to remove the handle setscrews. We only suggest using a Torx screwdriver when the hex head of the screw has been "rounded out" and no longer gives the allen wrench a place to brace against. We appreciate you using Moen products! Happy Holidays!

Hello Welshbard. We are sorry to hear of the difficulty you are having with the installation of a new cartridge. We suggest cleaning & flushing the valve body prior to installing a new cartridge. The following link will provide you with additional information on the cleaning & flushing of the Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower rough-in valve: solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/Valve_Body_Cleaning_and_Flushing We also suggest that you use very little of the included silicone lubricant on the rubber cartridge parts. Do not over-lubricate the rubber parts of the cartridge. The above two suggestions should help with the installation of that new cartridge.
How to remove a brand new 1222 cartridge and install the brand new 1222 cartridge. There, I fixed it for you. Nothing about removing an OLD malfunctioning cartridge is easy. In fact it's a load of crap. Set aside a few hours if you're going to do it yourself. May the odds be ever in your favor.

Old catridge was so hard to remove, I pulled it out as much as i could then push it back in and repeat until i got it out! Moeen should of gave the tool along with the replacement catridge for free, you cheapos 😢
Hello grotesquecat. The Moen 1222 replacement cartridge does include a twisting tool to assist with the removal of the cartridge; however, the Moen cartridge puller for the 1222 and 1225 cartridges is sold separately. The removal of the Moen 1222 cartridge can be a hard pull to remove depending on how long the cartridge has been installed and the water quality. We do appreciate your suggestion of including the puller with the Moen 1222 and will pass the information on to the appropriate department.
Hello Philip. We are sorry for the difficulty you experienced with your Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower cartridge replacement. Cartridge replacement can be more complicated depending on how long the cartridge has been in-service and the condition of the water-hard or high in mineral content-flowing through the tub/shower valve. We suggest cleaning & flushing the Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower rough-in valve after removing the cartridge: solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/Valve_Body_Cleaning_and_Flushing We also suggest using the plastic twist tool to help fully seat the cartridge in the Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower rough-in valve. The replacement cartridge needs to be fully seated inside the Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower rough-in valve to ensure that the retainer clip can be re-installed.
These cartridges Fricking suck. They are the worst and you will scar the new one trying to get it in. The rubber pieces on the side will pop off. If you’ve got this, you should switch it.
Good morning. I apologize for the trouble you have had with replacing the posi-temp cartridges. Here is some information regarding cleaning and flushing the valve body which you may find helpful: solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/Valve_Body_Cleaning_and_Flushing
Let me help all of you who are planning on replacing your own cartridge, burn your house down if you have moen products in your home it's already lost it whole value, I watched these videos just like you. I'm gonna tell you the truth, it is not as easy as they portray, big secret huh?, it took me 4 hours of beating cussing and sweating to get it out and replace, the thing is impossible to put in like the video shows. It's a lie, the chamber is bored out oversized for the purpose of the video, I bet anyone who actually has done this is pissed by how they show the make it look easy. It's NOT!! TRUST ME BURN THE HOUSE DOWN IF YOU HAVE THIS IN IT!!!!!
Hello Moondog3322. We are sorry to hear about the difficulty you experienced with replacing your cartridge and appreciate your extra effort taken to remove/replace the cartridge. Depending on the mineral deposits / calcification and how long the cartridge has been installed, can cause the removal of the cartridge to be more difficult to remove. Moen does manufacture a cartridge puller, Moen model number 104421 that can help with removal of the cartridge. You can contact Moen directly for technical assistance at 1-800-BUY-MOEN (1-800-289-6636) or reply to this email. Our business hours are 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday Eastern Time.
Hello 502Louisvelle. The video is designed as a guideline to assist with the replacement of the Moen 1222 cartridge. Depending on the age of your unit and your water quality the removal of the cartridge may be more difficult to remove. Moen does manufacture the cartridge removal tool; Moen model number 104421. MY OLD CARTRIDGE PRODUCED OFF ALL THE WAY CLOCKWISE And WARMER AS YOU TWISTED COUNTERCLOCKWISE. NEW CARTRIDGE, INSTALLED PERTHIS VIDEO IS OFF WHEN POINTER IS AT 12:00, COLD COUNTERCLOCKWISE, AND WARMER CLOCKWISE. ?
Hello @thomaslinton5765. We are sorry to hear of the difficulty you are experiencing with your Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower. Based on your description, the handle is not installed properly; in the "OFF" position, the tip of the lever handle should be pointing down to the drain/floor or in the 6:00 position. From the "OFF" position, the handle should rotate counterclockwise with the 12:00 position being warm or a mix of hot and cold and the 9:00 position being full hot. The following link will assist you with the installation process: solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/1222_Cartridge%3A_Single_Handle_Shower-_PosiTemp Should you require additional assistance, please contact us directly at 1-800-289-6636. Old cartridges do not slide out easily. They are very difficult to pull which is why Moen sells the special tool to make it easier. I think this was an excellent video showing how to replace the part. It was very very helpful for me.
Hello Greg. We appreciate your feedback and support of the Moen brand. Please reach back out if we can be of further assistance.
True! Mine was stuck so hard that it shattered when I pulled it out.
@@moenfaucets will the cartridge puller tool help for situations where the stem has broken completely away from the cartridge?
Hello @jennifermorinedwards462. The 104421 cartridge puller will not work if the stem of the cartridge is broken. We would be happy to assist you with troubleshooting the stuck cartridge. Please contact our Consumer Services Center for technical assistance; they can be reached at 800-289-6636. Our current business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (EST).
Wow one of those videos from mfgs that are short, to the point, clear and helpful

@@moenfaucets I do not think using WD40 to remove siezed up metal parts that are being disposed poses any issue on installing a new one.
Hello Hakan. If WD-40 is used, we suggest ensuring any residual lubricant has been removed before installing the new cartridge.
Thank you! Vinegar and WD-40 helped get it out. Then used a paper towel to wipe in the inside dry.
You're welcome. We are pleased to hear you were able to remove the part. Moen Product Specialists are available for pre-purchase, technical, and warranty assistance; they can be reached at 800-289-6636. Our current business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (EST)

Thanks. This worked for me. I had to use all my force to get the cartridge removed.

Hello @JimPorter-Ir2ms thank you for posting your comments on this UA-cam channel. Thank you for the reply. I wish i had known this yesterday. It would have saved a lot of time , effort and money.
This would of course cause one valve to have the hot/cold supply lines to enter the valve body "reversed" and would require the cartridge be installed upside-down-when compared to a "traditional" installation.
step 1 close the drain before beginning. if it is a tub.
Video was spot on ,had to use a little elbow grease, thank you
Before trying tonput the clup back in, i tied a length of thread to the clip. First time I did this job the clip fell down into the wall. Piece of string is a life saver. Oh, rent or buy the cartridge puller!! Nearly impossible to remove the old cartridge without it.

Good reference video. I need to replace this cartridge due to leaks every six years or so, probably because of hard water.

Not easily is an understatement. When leak happens, the rubber seal has disintegrated, making it really difficult to pull out. In my case, each side was shreded into three pieces when pulling out, and it felt stuck.

Super easy instructions,thanks

If the stem is broken inside the valve, will a puller still work or do I need to carefully break the old one apart?
Hello and thank you for your inquiry on the Moen PosiTemp replacement cartridge. If the stem is broken on the Moen PosiTemp cartridge, Moen would recommend you purchase a 7/16" Tap Wrench to grab the interior walls of the PosiTemp shell and you should be able to pull the cartridge out using the handles on the tap wrench.
Should you need further assistance, please contact Moen directly at 800-289-6636. Our business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm EST.
Thanks I’ll try that f
Im renting a home and replaced my old keaky faucet with this. The notch on the cartride need to be down on mine or else off meant on. Don't know if I had a defective cartridge or if the builders of the home screwed something up, but it works like it's supposed to now.
Hello @tohrazul. You are correct! As shown in the video, the notched side of the cartridge stem is facing the ceiling. This allows you to easily install the handle with the set screw opening facing the ceiling. After installing the handle and before turning the water back on to the shower the handle and the notched side of the stem are rotated to be facing down towards the drain.

I think the body of cartridges was made by plastic, it would be easily broken when a user wants to replace a new one after years. Taking out a broken Moen cartridge is a nightmare. Moen doesn’t have any tool to support broken cartridges.

Before getting to the valve, you have to first remove the alan screw for the handle. What is the size of the alan wrench?
If you have a lever-style handle that uses a screw at the bottom of the lever, you will need to use a 7/64" Hex wrench.
Thank you. Very well explained.❤
Moen recommends the valve body be cleaned and flushed out, refer to the following link:

Hello alexeyg9685. No, you do not need to wait any time after replacing the cartridge to turn the water back on. After the cartridge clip has been reinstalled, the water can be turned back on.
why does the old cartridge have 2 o-rings front and rear of cartridge and the new one only has 1 o-ring in the front? It looks like there is a groove for an o-ring in the rear......i thought about removing an oring from the old and putting it on the rear of the new just for extra sealing? idk

Is there a way to turn the water off if this fails, without shutting off main water supply
Hello Ebklifestyle. If the Moen Posi-temp valve that you have installed has ¼ turn shut-offs or if you installed shut-offs on the supply line, you can turn the water off right at the valve. Depending on your installation, you may need to turn the water off to complete house.
Do i follow these same steps with a Moen 1222B cartridge ?
The "B" in 1222B just means "Bulk" quantities sold to plumbing companies. It's the same product.
If you are changing the cartridge for tub/shower where the water flows down, the cartridge should be upside down to what it’s shown in this video.
Hello jigneshngadhia. The 1222 cartridge should only be installed upside down if your hot and cold water lines are reversed; hot on the right cold on the left. Refer to the following link for additional installation instructions

Had a question that hopefully someone can answer. Having sometimes fluctuating temperature and the whole unit is new. I thought I saw another forum post where someone said if the hot pipe inside the wall is on the right you need to flip the cartridge 180 and then install. Anyone familiar with that?

Hello grotesquecat. The Moen 1222 replacement cartridge does include a twisting tool to assist with the removal of the cartridge; however, the Moen cartridge puller for the 1222 and 1225 cartridges is sold separately. The removal of the Moen 1222 cartridge can be a hard pull to remove depending on how long the cartridge has been installed and the water quality. We do appreciate your suggestion of including the puller with the Moen 1222 and will pass the information on to the appropriate department.
Ok
Yeah, the cartridge will never go in that easy. The pin will not either.
We suggest cleaning & flushing the Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower rough-in valve after removing the cartridge:

We also suggest using the plastic twist tool to help fully seat the cartridge in the Moen Posi-Temp tub/shower rough-in valve.

The following link will assist you with the installation process:
