I would like to see a non-wash day routine! How many days do you go without washing? How do you keep your hair from looking oily? What do you do in the morning to refresh your curls and contain frizz from sleeping?
Thanks!!
I would love to see this too? How often do you do this? What do you do on other days?
Agreed!
Ditto!
To stop frizz in the night u should swap your cotton pillowcase for a silk or satin one bcz Cotten takes out all your natural oils and moisture and causes a lot of frizz. U can also use a silk or satin hair bonnet or scarf
Your are lovely and your personality is so cute. I'm 63 and always wore my hair up in a ponytail. I have natural curly hair and I think my hair would look like yours with the right products. I need to embrace my curls. Your very helpful.
Thank you so much 🤶🎅
Jannelle- you share very helpful curly haircare tips, but I have to say, the BEST part of your videos...... is YOU. Your genuine smile and the frequent giggle in your voice tell that you're always having fun and its infectious! I can't help but smile when I watch your vids. 😊 THANK YOU for sharing your awesome you-ness! 💜
Thank you for saying this! I needed to hear it!!! I appreciate you ❤
I’m currently air drying after trying this routine and I can already tell this is going to be a game changer for me!
Happy to hear it!!! How did it turn out?!?!
Finally a curl guru! Finally someone who can speak my language! I've had a curl revelation! Lol. I went out and bought a bunch of products you recommend. Thank you!
I have never loved a haircut nearly as much as I love yours. Amazing! Your stylist is a genius. Also, your eyes are insanely beautiful!
Thank you so much for this! I was wondering why my curls were so stringy... no more raking! it made such a difference already.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am SO glad I found you! Finally, a curly haired girl with hair similar to mine (but better). I followed these tips and have been doing a happy dance ever since!
Love your videos! Thanks for making it all look lots less time-consuming, complicated and fussy than so many curly hair vids seem to do! Your hair is gorgeous!
It definitely doesn't have to be so complicated. I am glad you found this video beneficial in highlighting that!
Thank you for the tutorial. I'm just starting my curly journey again and I need all the help I can get. Lol. Not going to fight my curls anymore!!! Love that your bulldog checked on you. My bulldog does too when he hears the shower go off.
I have been struggling pretty bad with attempting to master a curly hair routine. Your channel has helped so much! I just followed this step by step (my hair is closer to 2c so not as curly as yours), but this has truly worked wonders. Thank you for sharing your valuable insight! You kept me from reaching for my Brazilian keratin treatment and a straightener! I’m still very new to my CG journey, but I hope my curls will only get better from here. You are awesome! :)
that is so awesome to hear!!!!
Thanks for the video.
I am trying to learn how to style my 5 year daughters hair. She has curly hair, lots of frizz and not so much volume.
I learnt a lot from your video. Thanks for uploading. What a gorgeous woman you are and you also have a great smile 😍
Your hair is the closest to mine that I've seen on UA-cam! Thank you for the tutorial. My hair isn't as curly on top as yours is... did that come with time or is there anything you've done to help the top of your head curl better?
I’ve just started fully embracing the CGM and I’m finding your videos super helpful! Thank you so much for sharing♥️
I am on day 14 and very appreciative of your detail. I won't give up! LOL
Wahoo!!! Good for you! & thank you!
You have truly inspired me to care more for my curls. Went out and bought a few products today. I hope it turns out well.
Thank you for the tips for how to get the roots away from the scalp, starting when wet!
I have so much trouble getting volume other ways because my hair is insanely frizz-prone even with good products, but I’ll have to try this!
I’m having the best hair day that I’ve had since starting the CGM journey! THANK YOU!
It would be fantastic if you would turn on captions. I often watch videos while blow drying!
Oh no! I thought I did! I'll look into it, bare with this youtube newbie!!!!
me too!
Where’s the shower wall covered in hair? 🤣 This video is so helpful!
LOL! I always set it off camera, I have a habit of smearing them everywhere! Glad you found the video helpful!
😅😅😅😅😅 I thought mine was the only one that looked that way
No joke I was about to say the same thing!!! I have long thick curly hair! Straight girls are able to brush there hair so I assume they don't have a wall covered in hair? What can I do to prevent so much fallout? or is it inevitable? She says no more raking, but I can't stop bc sooo much shedding... (even after i've already brushed under the water with my wide tooth comb) is this normal???
Hahaha, I am so glad that I'm not the only one!
Oh straight hair falls out too. I try to swirl mine together so doesn’t get all slimey in the drain. Wish mine would just curl
All up!
So just tried this and LOVE it... and I’m not even the same products (on their way..). You are my curly hair hero!
i have curly hair and i am just now figuring out how to care for it. i was given a hair routine by my hair dresser along with my own personal research but i’m still not getting the curls i want yet. after watching this i realized some of the mistakes i had been making! especially the raking...😬 thank you sm for this video!
Thank you for stressing the fact that you don’t rake your fingers through your hair after you get your conditioner distributed. I hear so many people say they comb/rake through their hair after they get out of the shower, then wonder why their hair is frizzy. I NEVER comb/brush/rake after I get my conditioner in my hair.
Leann McGovern I wish I didn’t have to brush it after shower and gel but if I don’t I get loads of halo frizz it’s so annoying xxx
I know this is an old video now, but thank you for the great tip about fixing any curls that didn't quite dry right. If I plop too long, then my curls end up bent like that and a bit wonky and I wasn't sure how to fix it! Same with the under layers that look straighter, I have that same problem and i thought it was just my hair but i'm curious to see if I dry it upright if it'll help. I'm still new to CGM. The healthy hair that's coming in and responding well to CGM is a bit similar to yours. I'm hoping after some TLC and a good haircut it'll bounce up haha I have ringlety pieces towards the roots and in some places throughout where I dont have bleach but then from midshaft to ends its more of a wave from the bleach damage. Definitely is a process!
Great video! Going to give some of this a go when I wash my hair tomorrow. I'm still in a love/hate stage with my hair and find myself missing the smoothness of the straightened hair. Do you part your hair deliberately or allow it to part how it wants to?
For the most part I let it do what it wants. Typically a flip forward/side to side helps it find its place!!!
I love your hair! You have some of the best curly hair on social media. Love your videos, too!
Your hair is absolutely gorgeous!!
Oh my goodness...you are beyond adorable....this is so helpful!!!! Your hair is gorgeous!!!!!
I'm new to the CG method and this was so helpful. I have never been brave enough to touch my hair as much as you do while styling (for fear of frizz), but I see now that is what creates the amazing volume you have (and no frizz!). Thank you for sharing your techniques. I can't wait to try it.
I do have a little frizz. But its the typical frizz you have with curly hair. I find that if i keep the focus on my roots and move my hair at the lengths with no raking its possible to manipulate my hair quite a bit without causing excess frizz!
I love your videos! So helpful!! Cute bathing suit too ❤️
Thank you so much Alana, I got it on sale at Nordstrom Rack
This is so thorough and helpful!!
Never thought about adding your product after it has been drying. I will have to try that. I've been slacking in my curly hair routine. Love how you keep it simple!
Hi Jannelle! I’m so happy I found your Instagram and UA-cam channel! You are great with giving information. I’m new to CG and having a hard time finding what my hair likes. No matter what I do, my ends stick together and look thin. It sucks. My last wash day I did it your way with putting my products in after it has dried a little which has helped, but do you have any advice to separate the clumps at the end? Thank you!!!
It was very helpful for my firsts wash days!! Thank you for all the info!!
Love your videos, really think you might have got it right for low porosity hair , I’m trying it out right now , thankyou
I copied your routine today and it worked so well! Thank you.
This was so helpful for newbies like me! 😄
Your curls look very beautiful!!!
Thank you so much for this video! I did this and I’ve never had better hair!
My hair is super curly underneath but the top is sad and straight unless I scrunch the crap out of it and then it still doesn't work. I need to go over all the products you get and start buying these.
Your hair is JUST like mine in like every way! Haha Although, I do one thing differently than you and that is I put the Deva clips in after I diffuse but now I will definitely try it dry! Thanks for sharing!
Also I’m a sweater not a 🧥but a 💦. What did I do if I can’t possibly condition wash? I’d be so gross and oily if I did that although I do understand that washing with sulfate free conditioner requires hand work to clean the hair in place of the kind of foaming agents in shampoos that we depend on to do the work for us.
Great video! Love your smile and tight curls! Very good job! I have been straightening my hair for years, and want to set my natural curls free - without the frizz "HALO"!
How often do you wash your hair? Also, my curly hair dresser told me to diffuse on low with high heat when my hair is soaking wet. Do you find there are better results how you showed in your video?
Wow, your hair looks sooooo good!
You apply products when it's 50% dry?
From start to finish, how long do you think this takes you? I need to figure out a faster routine. I think my kids think I live in my bathroom.
Too long haha. Its probably about 2 hours all said and done but I can make it happen in 1 if I really need to by not air drying as much and jumping straight to diffusing. The air drying portion takes the longest. Have you tried plopping over night?
Jannelle O'Shaughnessy Engels I actually have tried plopping overnight with a net instead of a t shirt, but curls are kinda wonky.
@@budicheeks what is plopping?
Krista Wheale it’s where you use a t shirt or microfiber towel and lay it flat then “plop” your curls onto it. Twist it around the sides and your curls are sort of accordioned in the towel. Try searching it.
Ashley Bluth thanks, I will. After having kids my hair has changed so much. Trying to start wearing it curly again, and want to love it, but it’s hard after baby hairs and all that goodness
How often do you do this routine? I am learning so much from your videos !! thank you so much
Gorgeous ☺️ Do you regularly switch up wash/condish products? If so, why?
Challais McDonald yes! I have a few line ups I like and hair always kind of needs something different! Plus I’m always trying something new for you all! ❤️
Your hair is lovely! Think we have similar type of hair but I’ve never used leave in conditioners - I try and avoid too many products as it ends up feeling really product-ey. Think I’ll try now though - can you give us a list of your favourite leave in conditioners? Also on a separate note - how often do you deep condition? Thank you! X
Check out my favorite products video! I break my favorites down and why!
Oh i have to try the lifting from the root trick!
Hi I really liked the video. It has definitely taught me a lot of things on how to take care of my hair. I was wondering, how often do you wash your hair?
Definitely gonna try your techniques for my next wash day!!
I am looking forward to your results already!!! 😻🙌🏻
That’s so cool! It looks great!
Maybe you mentioned it but how Many times a week you have a wash day?
Been binge watching alllll the curly girl videos out there.. but one thing I’ve yet to hear anyone say is how often they wash (with shampoo and/or co-wash) I realize it depends on the individual needs, but as a guide, what do you suggest ? I’ve been thinking wash twice a week and alternate shampoo and co ? My hair is your length and about a 2c/3a. Fine but lots of volume. How often do you ? Thx
My hair gets super tangled, but I want to try your method! Would you recommend detangling prior to showering? Pls help, love you!!💕
Depends on the tangles and ease of detangling. If its really tangled I'd wait until you are in the shower and detangle with conditioner in!
@@JannelleOShaughnessy Thank you so much!!! I’m going to try this on my next wash day with my Alikay Naturals products and the bowl method! So excited🤗💕
I have long hair and it tangles so much in the shower and wet. This is causing me so much frizz any suggestions.
Do you always use the foam and Ouidad gel? Have you tried LA Looks gel?
I noticed you added the bounce curl hairspray to your routine. At what point do you use it? The end? Or as a setti g spray while still damp? Also love your shower!
polly j at the end to hold!!!
I really enjoyed your video it is so helpful ! But I feel like if I put as much conditioner on my scalp it will be super greasy and I will have to re-wash my hair once it’s dry... I dont know how to manage curls and oily scalp 😫
I know this is like a year late, but i had a similar problem. I learned that i was over drying my scalp and it will getting super oily to compensate. I started with using dry shampoo between washes to extend how often i washed and then focused on hydrating without silicones(my scalp actually breaks out in hives when I use silicones and sulfates). I co wash more often than not. It took some time, but once I realized my oily scalp was actually my scalp telling me i was drying it out to much, I was able to get it under control and hardly get an oily scalp/roots anymore.
I want to try this my next wash day. I use cantu curling cream and la looks gel. How much shold I use to style my hair. I think I'm using to much product. My hair does not fluff up. My curls are nice and soft and they look good. But the top is always flat and frizzy. Any tips you have for me.
How long does this entire excess take you? From the time you get out of the shower until your hair is ready.
what other leave in conditioners do you recommend? and do you use one every wash day?
NICE CURLY HAIR. DO YOU TAKE ANY VITAMINS?
Hi Janelle! I notice you put product in out of the shower when your hair is partially dry. This is completely different from what other CM videos show. When getting ready for work I don’t have time to air dry that long. Any recommendations? Love your hair and your videos!
If i am in a time crunch i occasionally use paper towels to scrunch and soak up extra moisture. If you use and like towels that works too i would just be cautious because they tend to soak up more water than necessary. But that will expedite the drying process so you can apply to damp curls.
Just discovered your channel and love your videos, do you now use the comb instead of the scalp massager , I think I'd be scared to put a comb to my roots.. I don't think we can get those products in the Uk , shame the gel stuff looks good for the roots.
I always use the scalp massager. On a rare occasion I will rat my roots for extra volume but that is the only time I am putting an actual comb to my hair.
What’s that 3rd product you put in your hair? I got that it’s a leave in conditioner but didn’t hear the brand name.
Do you not brush your hair before putting the products in your hair?? I have the same hair type as you but I know my hair would be notted if I didn’t brush
This is so interesting to me (this is my 1st time watching a wash day video with your text of curl) how often do you do your wash day and if it's not every day how long does it last? Also I'd recommend you getting a pick instead of using the comb to fluff and lift it will give you more control and focus on the roots.
I typically can stretch my washdays 4-7 days. Less is better for me. I also don't mind less definition and a little frizz which helps with them lasting so long. Do you think a pick would work for a looser curl type that isn't very dense? I've always assumed I didn't have enough hair to benefit.
MsShellyV7 I thought the same thing about a pick! 👍
@@JannelleOShaughnessy What do you do to maintain the curls between wash days? Do you have a video for that? if not I would love to see that!!
Our hair is the same length and very similar in texture, but your curls are tighter than my curly waves. I'm honestly thinking it has something to do with the way I style it. I'm going to try this today and I'll keep you posted on how it worked for me! I'll tag it #jannellesgotmycurls ♡♡♡♡♡
My instagram is @curlynn_ btw! I'm so grareful you shared your secrets with us because good LORD did they help!!!
hi could you give me the names of the 3 products you used please thanks
How often do you wash your hair?
Your hair is so pretty 😍
@jonesypickle this is so helpful!! Thanks for being our curly Queen!
English Bulldog photobomb deliciousness!! 😍🐶
She always wants to be in the mix!!! 😻
@@JannelleOShaughnessy this is soooo late but I'm trying to learn different techniques, btw what's your pups name?
Do you brush your hair? If so, when and how often and what type of brush?
I do on a random occasion just for fun but not in my normal routine. I detangle only in the shower using my fingers with conditioner in my hair!
6:36 OH MY GOD I LOVE YOUR BULLDOG, I NEED TO MEET HIM/HER 😭😭😭
Also your hair is gorg lol great video
Hi Jannelle was wondering if you could suggest a product to put on my hair for shine, I have high porosity hair. I have been following what you do to your hair and you have the best shiny curls. My hair is very dry and I have just started the curly girl method.
Some of my coils are so tight there’s no length whatsoever. The curl just compresses in from the last curl so that it’s like a solid ringlet that looks more like a barrel. This is my underside and my baby hairs. My other hair ranges from 3A to 3C hair. It’s as though half my head inherited a completely different hair texture and curl type. How do I deal with this? Most of these videos for curly girl recommend one routine for a certain hair type. Edit: my hair resembles yours on top but under my hair around the neck you’d see tight 1/4 inch tight coils and as it goes toward the top it gets the standard curl that is more broad and doesn’t compress as much.
What is the benefit you find from mostly air-drying and then diffusing? Does it help your cast set or curls come out more defined?
If i diffuse my hair too soon it tends to make my hair really flat. waiting gets me the best definition and volume. Diffusing too much also tends to make my hair drier even with cold air so staying away from it as long as possible is a win win.
I should try that thank u
Question: is there a specific reason why you don’t put your styling products when your hair is soaking wet?
flipping your hair doesn't cause frizz o ruin your clumps? thats my problem, any tips?:( sorry for my English
I'm so glad I watched this. I have fine hair that I think is low porosity (I just watched your porosity video minutes ago) but it gets oily so easily. I've tried using more conditioner but it seemed to make the oily scalp issue worse. I just started using the smallest amount of conditioner. I could not believe how much conditioner you just put into your hair. My hair must be really dry if I'm not using much conditioner, right? What should I do if my hair is fine and I get oily quickly? :( Thank you for all your help! I'm struggling trying to figure out my mane.
Conditioner is seriously the worst thing that can happen to a scalp lol. I am glad you were able to assess it and get it figured out! Don't worry about how much I use. If a little bit is working for you stick with that. Part of the reason i use more product is because i have hard water and it builds up on hair making it harder for me to work product in.
I am just starting on my curly hair journey and while I am still trying to figure out how to get my curl pattern back and do the right things with regaining my curls one thing holding me back is my seborrheic dermatitis I have to wash my hair with a special medicated shampoo every time I wash my hair to treat my scalp does anybody know if that could cause problems since we need to wash our hair with non silicone, paraben, sulfate products and also could it be causing me to loose curl close to the scalp of my hair ? Please help! :(
How often do you wash your hair
Hi! I’m coming up on two months curly girl method. Trying to find a styling method that works for me. Lately I’ve been finger coiling but I find that that method usually always makes my hair feel product heavy (no matter how many different ways I try it). Unless I do what I did last wash day which was only use leave in and a small bit of mousse. And now my delicate curls aren’t holding between washes and I’m left with a frumpy mess of used to be curls. Anyway, I have similar hair to yours I believe. Low porosity, with small clumping 2c/3a strands. I want to try this method outlined, but I wonder if I should wait til I have “trained” my curls a bit more with finger coiling? What are your thoughts? Thanks for always being so helpful!
I would give it a try! I personally get less definition the more I physically manipulate my hair. That might not be the case for you but its worth a try! Experimenting one wash won't slow your progress!
Ok so i have 2c/3a hair and my hair is so freaking thick its like a sponge which weighs down my waves/curls if someone has any tips so my curls don’t get weighed down please comment on this!!!
Try products formulated specifically for wavy hair! They tend to have all the hold but are formulated to be lightweight! Also, mousses, custards and foams are good stylers! Try and stick with one styler and it will also really reduce weight!
Your hair is soo nice
I have a question !?!?!? When do you detangle and how do you detangle your hair??
In the shower with my hands and conditioner!
Hi, great info and great video. I have a question, (I'm not a native English speaker). When you're rinsing the conditioner...what are you saying? rinking? what does that mean?
Thank you :)
I mention that I do not "rake" my hair. Raking is to run your fingers through your hair the same way you would with a comb.
We have the same hair and I'm SO afraid of mousse!! I'm gonna try your application and see what happens. Wish me luck and thanks for a great vid!
Mousse is my Jam! Definitely try and keep me updated!!! 🙌🏻💗
How did it worked for you?
Janelle you have hair type, density and width very similar to me. Can I ask how often do you wash your hair?
I tend to wash every 4-7 days!
omg how do you keep your armpits so clear? you should give us some tips pls
I keep trying to apply my stylers later, after my hair has started to dry, and the frizz is crazy. There is no recovery except rewetting and basically, starting over. No bueno. Have you tried putting the mousse in your hair while still in the shower? Then, apply the gel after half-way dry. Or do you apply all of them later in the process to keep the volume? Thanks!
The only product i apply in the shower is the leave in. My hair can't handle the weight from products on soaking wet hair. You might be using too many protein heavy products and/or products with glycerin (humectants) that are drawing in too much moisture and swelling the hair.
How long does your process take for you from out of the shower to volume clips.
Hi loved ur video.
Just a suggestion the last part u combed ur roots y did u do tht, thy were absolutely perfect bfore than later.
I personally like to fluff my hair. If its not for you, skip that step!
your hair & mine curl almost exactly the same mines a bit curlier & it's quite thick I also get alot of breakage
I wish these products were available in Canada!
How long do you air dry appropriately?
