    I honestly love you so much, such an inspiring soul, and insightful. I’m starting my curly hair journey and big chopped this month and what I needs to hear was to let go of expectations and to stop comparing, after I started doing that things have only gone uphill. Thank you ❤️❤️

      I agree so much!!! I've been comparing, and hoping my curls would magically behave and form up like someone else's. I'm slowly embracing that they have a mind of their own and are gonna do their own thing.

    This is the first video about curly hair that mentions things sistematically. I really appreciate it. Other youtubers tend to jump around the topic which sometimes makes it hard to follow, but your way of explaining was amazing. ♥

    I Can't stand the satin pillowcases so I wear a satin bonnet at night and in less than a month I saw the frizzy "trouble areas" drastically reduce.

      @SomethingReallyStrange it will probably reduce frizz but I am really not sure about the greasy part

    • @longyarn4288
      @longyarn4288 5 років тому +3

      @SomethingReallyStrange - You may actually be washing it too often. It will take time to transition but try to add in a day to your routine. If you're already going 2 to 4 days between washes, you may need to try deep clarifying once a month to get rid of build up. Also, apple cider vinegar rinses once a month will help to both get rid of build up and seal your cuticle which will increase shine. These are all steps I did when my hair was straight, before menopause. 🙄 Remember, frizz is curl waiting to happen! 😁

    Hey, Jannelle! Great video! I am a newbie curly-girl and am beginning my journey. An auburn ringlet headed little girl with blue eyes morphed into a brown very thick, wavy haired, green eyed lady. Who knew? After fighting with my hair for umpteen years, I gave birth to a ringlet headed daughter. People would look at her, look at me and ask, where does she get her curls? A few delusional people actually asked if I curled my 2 year olds hair! Oh, yes! That’s our Mother/Daughter bonding time! She kept her curls pulled back into a tight bun until, at 13, after watching a Julia Roberts movie where her curls free & I convinced her to give it a try. The reaction at school was sensational! Compliments galore, time saved not fighting with her hair but the best was taking pride in her curls. My curls started making a S L O W comeback after menopause. I noticed hairs at the base of my neck were curly first, then it started to spread. I ended up with straight hair on top until my ears then curly the rest of the way down. AGH!!! After years of spending countless dollars getting my hair blown dry straight, being afraid of humidity (I live in FL) and terrified of rain, I knew it was time to see my real hair. I was shocked how curly my hair was just on its own. Now my grown daughter was counseling me on the curly hair movement and how to get started. So, now I’m following the spiraling brick road to the Land Of Locks. Waiting for my package with all my new goodies to arrive, I’ve been researching, reading and trying new methods like wrapping my hair around my fingers after putting in an obscene amount of leave-in conditioner. To my surprise, my ringlets are returning mixed in with s’wavy curls. I cannot wait to see my reflection a year from now after traveling on my journey and truly embracing what grows out of my head! I look forward to watching videos, finding groups and using that awesome looking head scratcher because, damn, my scalp itches! 💋

    One thing alot of people might not agree with is that not all healthy hair is low porosity. When i started out on my “curly hair journey” about 4 years ago I just used products from the drug store that had the word curly on them and didn’t care much about the ingredients. Then I went to a curly hair specialist and she spoke about how low porosity is good and high porosity is bad. I then started doing everything a low porosity girl would do, even though I knew my hair was high porosity and it had a really bad impact on my hair health. When I went back to this stylist she told me that is was just my hair adjusting and when it’s truely healthy it will be low porosity. I followed tips for low porosity hair for over a year and it COMPLETELY DESTROYED my hair. It was always frizzy, broken peices sticking up from my crown and I couldn’t retain any length.Since following tips for high porosity hair my hair has become so much healthier and longer. This included using butters/waxes/silicones and brushing my hair when it is dry. I think the curly girl method is great and you have no idea what you’re doing but if it doesn’t work for you, you really shouldn’t keep doing it.

    • @heatheryfeathery1
      @heatheryfeathery1 6 років тому +31

      When you are plopping or squeezing your hair you are being very precise with the cotton. You definitely aren’t rubbing. When you sleep on a cotton pillowcase you are rolling around on it all night which produces tangles and can strip moisture.

    How do we know what curl type we have when we’re first starting out? I know I was born with curly hair, i don’t have too many pictures of me with curly hair when I was really young because the pictures weren’t the best quality and my mom cut my hair into a bob and blow dried it all the time. All I know is my parents said my hair was very curly like ringlets. I just don’t know how curly and what type of curl I actually have because I didn’t let my hair do it natural thing for a long enough period of time to know. I would straighten my hair half way through elementary school and all through high school except for maybe a week out of the month I would leave it natural and it seemed more of like a 2B/2C at that time but again I don’t know how much more it can curl because of what it’s been through. I also have very fine hair, hold moisture very well and dries fast , gets frizzy easily. So over all I’m confused as to what type of curl I have etc. All I know is my hair is thin, gets weighed down by products very easily.
    So far right now it’s been a week of natural hair no heat except for diffusing and my hair is so far a 2c in the top and towards the ends a 2B but I can tell they want to be tighter. I don’t have any volume either and don’t know how to get volume. Sorry for the overload but if anyone could help me i would be grateful 🙏🏻

    A clarifying shampoo is sooooo important. I didn't need one until I moved countries. I thought I had horrible dandruff, but dandruff shampoos weren't helping. I was like "whats going on with my hair!!!!!" Finally found out about clarifying shampoos, wheeeeeew. Lol
    Edit to add
    Actually. I researched the crap out of so many products and would have a hard making the final decision on which product to go with. The results would be OK. Guess who would come along with some shampoo he found at the store and thought that the oils and claims on it looked good? My husband. And the results would always be way better than the products I spent ages researching. I was like, "why do you do this!!!! Its not fair!!" Lol
    I will have get him to pick sulfate and silicone free products for me.

      There's a company called prose (real life+curly girl did a video) based on over 80 factors that they determine from a very specific questionnaire, they formulate a CUSTOM blended wash conditioner & masque (i think?) ... buuuut i guess you do have to know all those details about your hair first... i do wish there was a test like dna, water, or even soil samples! I'd pluck a few strands & send it off to be analyzed! I'm sure it's just a matter of time, now that the CGM is getting so popular!

    My biggest issue is that I have to wear my hair up and in a hair net for work. My hair is thin and I don't have a lot so I have a lot of breakage! I use one of those scrunchy less damaging hair ponies and that has helped!

    Just entered your competition on instagram I really wish I can win this💗💗
    My country doesn’t have much curly friendly hair products and I really want to win it so I can embrace my curls and show our community that having curly hair is beautiful and doesn’t make people ugly and less wanted

    First of all, where's the bulldog?
    The only thing I would disagree with you about is the need to buy a co-wash. I almost never co-wash. Instead I just use the devacurl no- poo. But I can usually get 5 days or even 6 before I need to wash again, and I'm not sure if everyone can do that. But I think a lot of people just co-wash with conditioner, and I don't want to buy anything more than I have two! Love this video!

    Yeah you buy more products but you save a lot of time than styling. There are affordable products per country and I like that.

    Noticed a lot of the product recommendations contain coconut oil - particularly the leave in conditioner, I am allergic and that’s not uncommon. So many some non coconut oil recommendations in the future would be an idea

    Satin is a type of weave. Cotton is a fibre. There is no such thing as cotton vs. satin, satin especially bedsheets etc is actually often made from cotton.

      Cassi Brown I’m glad the two of us think so! 😂 do you have any questions or what you could use help with now that you’ve started! It was suggested above to do an intermediate video and I think that could be fun.

      Oooh that’s a good question! You have so many videos that cover pretty much every bump in the road so I don’t know! I’m anxiously waiting to see your vlogs and videos from your haircut 👀👀👀 but I’d love to see some diffusing tips & tricks or comparisons of blow dryers and other tools for curly hair. That sounds weird the way I typed it out but maybe like a diffuser quick start guide! I know there’s a ton out there that people love and hate 💓 I also love routine videos 🙃

    Knowing your curl type is a good place to start, but don’t completely discount products for other curl types. I’m mostly a 2 with a little 3a, but I have to use heavy products for curlier types because my hair is so dry. I only cowash. My hair does best if I deep condition every wash. I use heavy conditioners. They don’t weigh down my hair, my hair needs the moisture.

      @@JannelleOShaughnessy can you please shear with us all the applying methods that you tried to apply your deep conditioner? I cant understand my hair the curly last one day or few hours only once I sleep or put it up it gone. I read about that mean the curly need more hydration so I tried many mask noting work but when I tried shea moister deep conditioner my hair hold the curly to the second bay but not more than that. I'm using stain bellow-case, satin lined cap and heat deep conditioning cap. my hair mix of 3a/3b
