I use Photoshop for pretty much everything! And I don’t have that much experience with app development (hopefully soon!) but I did design the one listed here in Photoshop as well.

Hello Dyllen!! All of your artworks look amazing!!!! I am applying this year - right now... as a incoming freshman. I noticed you have your mobile app design, which one of my projects is a mobile app design as well. For the dimensions of your piece, did you put the actual size of the image? (I am having a hard time try to figure out what should I do with the dimensions...)

Wow that's so amazing! If design media arts is my alternative major for UCLA, do i have to turn in the supplement ? I think I read somewhere that it's only required if Design Media arts is your first choice! Thank you and love your vids!

Thanks for the insight I'm apply for it this year. We're there any programs out of California you apply for? That would allow for a focus on digital art, 3D and 2D and related to Digital media arts major, Design or graphic design major?
I applied to NYU's Interactive Media Arts major, Fordham's New Media and Digital Design major, The College of New Jersey's Interactive Multimedia major, and Marist's Interactive Media Department. And some schools I didn't apply to but considered include Yale's Computing and the Arts major and The New School (Parsons) Design and Technology major.

Thanks! My senior year I took AP psych, AP enviro, AP stats, musical theatre, AP Studio Art, Peer Counseling, English, and Gov.

yeah! Sophomore year I took Spanish 2, AP World, Honors Chem, PE, Photography 2, Honors English, Drawing, Precalc.

Thank you for sharing Dyllen. I am soon to be a college applications counselor for Chinese IB students at a Chinese high school in China. So I am watching videos such as yours. I will need to help the students do apps like this to get into programs in the states and all over the world. I myself got my MA at UCLA in International Education and do admissions interviews for Brown Univ, so I have a background with some of the things you are discussing in this video. But I do not know much about media or graphic arts; are those terms generally interchangeable? And second, did you actually do those color drawings, for example the last one with the electrical outlet plugs, etc. That seems to be more of a creative arts, such as drawings, paintings and sculpture than media arts. Can you explain that issue if possible?? Thanks.
Hey! Thank you for reaching out. I think media is more specific to art created by technology unlike graphic art. Every piece of art in this video was made by me. I understand how my drawings and paintings seemed to be more like fine art than media art, which is why I also included app design and graphic design to show variety in my portfolio.

I'll also read more about the differences but it appears that you were suited for more than just media arts. Hope Stanford doesn't shelter you too much. Art needs experience and challenge to communicate anything meaningful!!

Hi! I designed the mockup using Photoshop, but usually for user interface people use Figma or Sketch!

how many pieces of portfolio did you submit？
Does this major allow you to take classes on drawing fundamentals? I'm interested in concept art and other aspects of game design, so would you think this program or the normal art program at UCLA would suit my interests more?
I'm pretty sure it also teaches drawing fundamentals. Take a look at their website to get a better sense of what they have to offer and if it fits your interests! dma.ucla.edu/undergrad/program/

UCLA is my dream school and I thought i was going to apply to FA for the past six months but last night I suddenly decided im applying to DMA, so here i am. would you say that dma cares more about breadth or concentration of medium in the portfoli?o (I mainly do photo and the FA advisor told me to submit ONLY photos, but im wondering if its different for dma) beautiful portfolio btw.
Hi, I am not entirely sure if they prefer a specific way, but a breadth portfolio was just my approach. I recommend looking specifically at the requirements and getting a sense from there. You can also visit or call the school/program to ask that question.

This program is my dream to get into but I didn't know I had to have previous history in art like awards and things like that :( Is that something that is a necessity to be able to get in?
I wouldn’t say anything is “necessary” to get in but it definitely helps

@@DyllenNellis The black and white wheel (the pie shapes, the arcs) and the little Saturn icon!! Also, if you don't mind me asking, what tech do you use for photoshop (graphic tablet, etc)? Thank you so so much for the quick response! :)
I see! So while I don’t completely remember, I think for that wheel thing I started with a bunch of flat circles within each other, selected which parts to invert, and then changed the perspective in the transform tool. And for the Saturn I made a circle shape that was filled and then an ellipse shape that wasn’t filled but had a white outline. I don’t completely remember how I made that black outline shape to separate the two but I’d assume that I could just duplicate that ellipse ring and make the outline black and move it over?? Or I just painted it?? Something like that lmao

Where did you gain your experience in digital artwork?
I grew up practicing on Photoshop and learning from my dad who works in digital art. However, there are so many tutorials and other free alternatives to Photoshop online!

I feel passionate about art however I'm self taught and never took classes as I felt no need for it. For the longest time I've kept art as a hobby and only in the recent years have I felt that I want to take it a step further. But I'm worried because I haven't participated in art contests/awards, activities, etc so I'm not sure what to put for that... my school also does not provide an AP art course :( What can I do about it? And will it affect my possibility of getting in greatly?
Also I'm not exactly sure what the DMA department is? I do have an interest in graphic design/illustration, but the DMA seems to include a variety of art categories.
Hi, I can't give you a definite answer because college admissions are based on so many different factors. It depends on your application as a whole, where you are applying, what you are applying for, etc. I recommend checking out the UCLA DMA department website if you'd like to learn more about it.

For the scholastic art awards, did you submit a portfolio or individual pieces? Also, did you attend the exhibition in nyc? I love your art by the way :))
I submitted individual pieces all 4 years of high school and submitted a portfolio in senior year. Unfortunately I never could go to the ceremony/exhibition in NYC due to schedule conflicts and finances. And thanks!!

I’d say it’s easier with individual pieces. It was my individual pieces that made it to the national competition.

Hey! I actually do not know a whole lot about the programs at UCLA since I didn't end up going there. But I recommend taking a look at their website and doing other searches online!
Honesly it's very tough making a good career and living with interiour design stuff. Waste of tuition.

I’m not entirely sure, this might be a different program! I encourage you to look on their website for all their majors
An authentic artist shouldn't have to force himself to go through countless semesters learning irrelevant materials that will not enhance one's skills. Talent eventually surpasses useless requirements. Take for example A Rapper/hip hop artist, or Rockstar their both one the same when it comes to camparing it to "digital media artist"
Well, no one's gonna hire you if you don't have a certificate dude
