    I've split 5 cords through it so far. Does what I need it to. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxUyQswtttSffRMblGbrhCvZn7JkhtG1-7 I scrounge all my firewood and am not equipped to handle big wood, but for logs up to 24 inch diameter or so, it works great. I've been amazed by some of the gnarly bur oak and elm crotches it has split. For the tougher stuff within it's size range, you might have to study the piece a bit to decide the best attack, but if you split smart it's up to the job. It did arrive low on oil, and I was would have nicked it half a star for that, but it has regained my full confidence. UPDATE NOVEMBER 2021: Still going strong after all these years. I love the one-handed operation. Hope it's still in production if I ever need to replace it

    What I like about it is that far outside support bar keeps the platform level. I was scratching my head on how that works. Pretty nifty idea there. I do like the design more than most of the other videos I’ve seen. I’m like you as far as not wanting to spend the money on a bigger valve, the cylinder and hoses. It could very well cost more than the 6or 7 hundred bucks you mentioned. I also like how if some pieces of wood were to fall and land underneath the lift end for the log piece it wouldn’t hurt anything, it would just stop when it lands on the piece of wood underneath it. Nice job brother. I’m building one because I am too old to lift the bigger pieces up onto the main beam for splitting. Take care and thank you for sharing your work ✌️👍🇺🇸

    Great idea. Taking a negative and turning it into a positive. The hydraulic piston going backwards is just lost energy but you turned it into a good way of saving you from fatigued. Way to think outside the box.
    My hat's off to you.

    Very creative way to address an issue without the additional cost of ram and hoses. I take it that this is for horizontal spliters only.

    I love it! Brilliant idea! It's not really all that complicated either.
    However, how's this for an idea, remember, only an idea.
    Invert the three point hitch so the log splitter is upside down. Then just use the lift of the three point hitch to lower the splitter to the logs on the ground. Split the logs then lift it to move the split logs.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  8 років тому

    I like it, curious how the connection from piston to wedge is holding up as they are designed to push and are only screwed into the wedge. I would be concerned of the piston pulling out of wedge and stripping out. I've seen a couple youtube vids of some short stroke chokers people put on the piston the try and stop the wedge sooner so they don't have to go back as far to reset to save time on the auto neutral position. However it ripped the piston out of the wedge on the back stroke as it is not designed to pull. I would weld the piston to wedge.

    • @trevorslater2746

      Welding the ram end to the wedge would last 5 mins as there's too much twisting

    Very clever design. I like it.
    Only drawback I see is that it has to retract when splitting. I find it handy to leave the lift up by the rail so the chunk can roll back onto it and be slid over for another split without lifting from the ground again.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  9 років тому +1

      tinkersdamnworkshop Yes, I debated this. I thought about putting a pin/bar that you push in from the other side that holds the deck at full height. This would allow you to still split and the red extension tube would just elongate. You could then pull the pin and use the ram to lower the table again.

    One word....ingenious!
    I know you said there is a safety valve on the hydraulics. However, I do worry about a log getting caught under the main beam as it lifts, that would ruin all your hard work. You could fit an easily replaceable shear bolt in the linkage that would break first before anything else.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  9 років тому

      Bob Bailey I like the way you think. I was thinking the same and intentionally wedged a log under it. It did stretch the hole for the leveling mechanism but the rest was strong enough to over some the force of the ram. That is why I added the extra leveling arm supports and the log deflectors so it should be to withstand itself.

    great design I would put a spring loaded table lock to lock the table in up position so you can use table help split logs that need several cuts and a release lever close to control valve and the lock lever needs to lock into release position when lifting logs good video quality and I can hear what you are saying THANX

    I looked through the comments, did you ever sketch out the lift? I can't quite see what you have done to the back to strengthen it.
    Great job!

      What can I say....you really rock youtube.......It's also cool to see you fail at times and then get it done in the end. You take it all and put it into perspective. Thanks for the fun and educational videos bro.......much respect to you!
