  • Welcome to Crimson Guitars www.youtube.co...
    The Amptone Lab XY MIDIpad MIDI touch screen controller, which is most often fitted to a guitar or bass and is used to control an external Kaoss pad, but can also be used to control a myriad of other units including VST's and the equally awesome Digitech digital whammy. We are often asked what is needed to make the xyMIDIpad work and how to hook the guitar and MIDIpad together with a Kaoss pad.
    This short video walks you through that process. From how to get your guitar sounds to the Kaoss pad to getting them out again, with some information on the basic controls available on the Kaoss pad itself. The guitar being used is a new Crimson 45rpm FX with three built-in effects pedals on top of the MIDI controller, wireless MIDI output, and the standard magnetic pickups.
    Our instructor today is the incredibly talented musician Ben Kerridge from the band Just James. A contemporary mix of electronica and guitar that will knock your socks off! You can find them here. / wearejustjames or their main site is www.wearejustja... and finally, the youtube channel is / wearejustjames
    Please Note: Crimson Guitars no longer sell these systems.

    This video should be called.....how to properly connect his insanely modded guitar to the KAOSS pad. :-/ Just need to know if the KAOSS can use Hi-Z or Lo-Z or what??

    I must be under-charging! I have many other videos with more standard guitars, although this isn't even a guitar demo, this video is for people who want to use a Kaoss pad with their guitar.. thanks for watching anyway

    This is a pretty special guitar, Ben asked me to build in the xy MIDI pad, two standard magnetic pickups a wireless MIDI transmitter and, here's where most of the knobs come from, 3 built in fx pedals.. 1 chorus pedal, 1 fuzz pedal and 1 flange pedal.. a bit crazy but it's what the client wanted and I tend to deliver :) We'll be releasing a full demo video soon so you can see exactly what she can so :)

    You don't have to have the xyMIDIpad controlling the Kaoss pad at all if you want to have your Kaoss pad in front of you.. everything in this video is about plugging your guitar into the Kaoss pad, the only thing we used the onboard xy pad for was to control the Kaoss pad remotely... hopefully this video should give you everything you need! :)

    There are only 2 ways too connect a guitar to a Kaoss pad and we showed both.. Unless you know something we don't? If so please let me know :-)

    I agree.. My ideal guitar has 1 volume, a tone and a switch.. though it really is fun building something this complex every now and then!

    It's pretty basic audio circuitry. First things first, the MIDI cables are for if you want to use it in the studio for your computer, so don't worry about those.
    Plug your guitar in with your standard guitar cable to the mic input on the KP3 and use a standard RCA-to-eighth inch (or if you can find RCA-to-quarter inch, that'd be best) cable out the Line Out of the KP3. Use a eighth-inch-to-quarter-inch converter at the eighth-inch end of the RCA cable and run it through the FX loop on the JCM.

    Yes, you could.. in fact that's how I did it myself when I first used one of these.. I'm sure a purist would argue but that's what purists are for.. thanks for watching!

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    Yes, we knew we'd miss something.. sorry! An RCA cable splitter does the job perfectly. Although splitting it to two amps or two PA channels panned either side does give you some cool options with the sound you can do it mono if you want.

    Have you guys got any suggestion for a MINI Kaoss Pad user? The little brother of the Kaoss Pad has no Mic Imput, just the stereo one. I use it in a secondary chain of my pedal board, by sending a splitted signal, which is then "putted back together" into a pedal that I use to boost the sound. It's a rude solution and I know i lose stero effects. Do you think i should split the signal direcly from the guitar or from the beginnig of the chain? Thank you.

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    While it's not ideal you certainly can run a kaoss pad/guitar into a standard amp input, just experiment with the output path to get the best sound..

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    Yes, I knew there was something we forgot, isn't there always? An RCA cable splitter does the job perfectly. Ben tends to use PA's in his work and we overlooked this bit.. sorry!

    we only built wireless MDI into this guitar to make controlling the Kaoss pad easier, otherwise we'd have needed two wires going from the guitar and that would make tripping up even easier!? unfortunately most guitar synth/MIDI pickups use a 13pin lead that we can send wirelessly as yet..

    I use a modelling amp (Line 6 Spider) with no pedals, so I have no pre-amp. Should I go:
    Guitar - KP - Amp
    Or:
    Guitar - Amp - KP ? thanks :)

  • @Chirbeef

    He's right, you know. I, personally, would never get something like this, but that doesn't discredit it as a very versatile instrument. I bet there were people just like you back when Les was trying to get out the Les Paul; in fact, I KNOW there were...Gibson did it. People rejected the idea of a solid body guitar, because it was radical and different. Look how that went...

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    we've not played with the MINI Kaoss pad and your setup sounds fine, as we say in the video you don't want to be modulating an already modulated signal so it should be first in the chain if at all possible.. this is something else I've considered building directly into a guitar.. could be good!?

    @Crimson Custom Guitars/Ben - Can you just use the headphone output (using a normal guitar cable) of the KP3+ and plug that into an amp that only has one input? Ben mentions that the headphone output is stereo (5:00) so would that work or would you still lose have the sound?

    Hello, I just installed the amptone lab XY pad into by guitar, does the KP3 have to be on a specific setting for the guitar to be able to connect?
    Thanks,

    By "music we have today", I meant all music since the "electric guitar" was introduced as a viable and significant instrument up 'til now, which had it's opposition from those who viewed the acoustic guitar as the only, true form that guitar should've been seen, played or heard as. I didn't mean "music we have today" as in 2012 or in the recent years past.

    Ok, also the steps are put the midi cable into the kaoss pad and guitar, then the aux cable from the guitar to the amp, and it should work fine.

    How about placing the pad post overdrive pedals, but pre-EQ pedal, delays, and reverb?
    Would it sound alright then, or should it be absolutely last in the chain, post delays and reverb etc?

    • @myklewarren
      @myklewarren Рік тому

      depends on what kp effects u want to use pre delay / verb. i only do that if i avoid verby fx on kaoss pad. def doable if u like the fuzz/decimator/rhythmic patches on kp3

  • @graphicartdude

    I'm surprised they don't have a guitar fx pedal that uses some foot lever to control a Kaoss Pad. They have them in guitar now, but it's almost like you need 3 hands to play them. At least with a foot control you can play the Kaoess while striking notes with your hands.
