I adore these videos because you guys do an incredible job at showing what's possible on a budget while not discouraging custom shop stuff. And there's never really a sales pitch like a lot of other channels. It's honest gear fun!
Modding my guitars is my favorite thing to do. Because it makes it “mine”. I never understood people who say “If change something, the value goes out for resale!” Certain cases apply, but I never plan on selling a guitar. I want to make it mine.
I bought a wiring loom for my tele from montys. I'd never done it before so I asked loads of questions which spanned over weeks. Mat answered everything, sent diagrams and was basically a legend. And it sounds killer, cannot recommend him enough
I ordered a Squire Tele in purple from Anderton’s and also ordered Monty’s Danish Pete pickups. Had the pickups installed, upgraded the tuners and WOW! Love the guitar! Super bonus: Pete and the Captain signed the headstock. Now, if I could play as well as them…
I think the custom shop thinline is the perfect guitar tone. A little more woodiness than a standard Tele, very articulate and defined... just gorgeous. No other guitar does what a Tele does. You really can do it all on a Telecaster. I've always thought that since I bought my first one almost 30 years ago at 16, but I could only afford one guitar then. Desert island, I would want a Tele... AND you could use it as an oar to row your homemade raft back to civilization and it would still be in tune.
what I hear too, not far behind but it is prolly cuz the woods aren't as tonally accurate, one would sure hope that ina $5000 custom shop you are getting something for that money
I have a classic vibe butterscotch tele and I removed all the poly, sanded it back to wood and then sealed it, took a huge amount of work but it looks and sounds great! Well worth the effort 👍
I love (light-medium) relics, but as talented as this fellow may be, this just illustrates the challenges of relicing a poly guitar. It just doesn’t work, and I definitely prefer the look of the stock Squier vs the modded version. Lee’s wins, though-proper nitro is wicked.
should stripped the poly totally and refin in a basic black nitro, would be much more satisfying. Even rattle cans can get a great relic from for what... £50 (primer, colour, top coat)
Get Montys pickups. I have a set of Pete's version in my purple Squire Tele CV. Outstanding. BTW not a relic fan in fact chipped some paint. Found some purple glitter nail polish on Amazon that's a perfect match😃
I think everyone should have an expensive guitar and its entry level equivalent. It shows you how great a high end guitar sounds and also how good beginner guitars are today.
My favorite sounding one with fairly expensive headphones on was….. the purple one!!! After that, the Monty pickups sounded so good but the no-caster bridge and twisted tele neck pickups wins a close second for me. Great job guys! It could be however, that Pete is so familiar and comfortable with his G.O. A.T that he just knows how to bring out the magic in that one.
To me the best sounds came from Lee's CS Thinline and Pete's purple Tele with Monty's DP51s. Head and shoulders above the other two, but given the price difference not unexpected. I have Monty's PAFs in my Les Paul and SG and they sound amazing. May have to invest in some Monty's pickups for my Tele too!
Really nice to see the "Benny Hill" relic process but I now have "Yakkety Sax" as an earworm... I have Monty's pickups in my main guitar. Soooo good. More like this please,
Telecasters without Pete? I will be doing this to a cheap tele soon. But it might be getting Pete's pups now...dangit. Oh, there's Pete at the end! I feel like I owe a cover charge for that outro.
The relic job really just looks like someone sanded a new guitar, not really like years of aging. 30 years from now, Squiers will still look like new with their thick lacquer and expensive relic guitars will all have disintegrated :-)
The less money you spend on bass traps and other acoustical treatment, the more money you have to tweak your guitars and amps to get that perfect tone :-) :-). Happy Hols and thanks for all the great videos, looking forward to 2022.
I have a custom made telecaster (which I built) and when I had it setup, the luthier (who services Toni Iommis' guitars) said its just as good at custom shop. Modding your own is definitely the way sometimes.
Nice pickups Monty! I don't like relics. However, I think this kind of video is one of the best! The guitars all sound terrific. Maybe Monty should have plsyed on a bit. He sounds good. Try this on an Infinity. That would be very interesting. Thanks!
Instead of sanding the guitar directly to relic it, I've just had a brilliant idea to do it more naturally. You could relic them by playing the guitar but greatly accelerate the process by strategically placing super fine sandpaper (1500 grit, or maybe 1000 grit if you wanted to be brutal) all over yourself with double sided tape. The back of the neck could also be done by placing some sandpaper in the gap between the base of the index finger and the base of the thumb, and a thin strip about the size of a plaster in the middle of the palm. Then you just play, alot. The wear would occur naturally as it would have done from normal playing but at a very accelerated rate.
I purchased the DP51 pickups. They are amazing. I installed them onto an Alder Warmoth T body. I painted it blonde with nitros. I bought a 50s 7.25 radius replica neck from Fender and medium sanded both sides of neck, feels great. The guitar looks and feels like a 1954 white guard, and sounds great thanks to Monty.
The only issue with modding a squier is a neck, which tends to be made of cheaper wood. It is not exactly dry, it often twists with time and is more prone to react to conditions changes
More content like this! Mod more stuff, make Matt a regular of the channel if he has time!
Yes! More Mod-Shop
Second that!
Agreed! This is such a cool format, I could watch guitar mod videos all day long.
Definitely cool shit , can't wait to do my build i got for xmas!
Totally agree. He needs to be on here regularly. More collabs etc.
I adore these videos because you guys do an incredible job at showing what's possible on a budget while not discouraging custom shop stuff. And there's never really a sales pitch like a lot of other channels. It's honest gear fun!
Expensive stuff = good and fun
Cheap stuff = good and fun

🤣 Loved the oar thing.
Haha So true!...im a proud tele owner for 40 years, got my first as a teenager and my last two from andertons, so fun to play! Merry christmas!
They all sound great. Sure, the sound on the classic vibe isn't as articulate, but it still sounds fantastic. matt's pickups are amazing.
what I hear too, not far behind but it is prolly cuz the woods aren't as tonally accurate, one would sure hope that ina $5000 custom shop you are getting something for that money

Not worth it if it has a soft poplar body, you want ash or pine body to make it worthwhile.
or alder would be fine, birch would have a good grain too.
I believe the classic vibe butterscotch are indeed pine
I have a Monty’s 54 p90 in my junior, awesome pickup, even the packaging was outstanding.
You used to get a good relic by just leaving a guitar home alone with the kids! Cheers Captain and Monty!!
Pete is a legend. What a player!
Pete's purple tele is still the best thing ever, I wish Fender would make that exact guitar for you guys to sell, I would order one in a heartbeat.
I love (light-medium) relics, but as talented as this fellow may be, this just illustrates the challenges of relicing a poly guitar. It just doesn’t work, and I definitely prefer the look of the stock Squier vs the modded version. Lee’s wins, though-proper nitro is wicked.
Yeah. Nothing against Matt. He did all he could. You can’t relic poly in a realistic way.
should stripped the poly totally and refin in a basic black nitro, would be much more satisfying. Even rattle cans can get a great relic from for what... £50 (primer, colour, top coat)
@@Lovetone1983 exactly! And install Lace Sensors.
I like the purple telecaster it's sounds amazing!
Sanding a poly neck is probably the greatest mod ever. Changed the feel of the guitar immensely and gave behind the guitar a little relic vibe
Pete, your an amazing player man...honored to watch andertons channel.
Awesome content as always guys! Merry Christmas to the whole team, can't wait to see what stringed wonders 2022 will bring! 🙂
Matt’s paf and Monty paf pickups are so freeking good. I have both.
The custom tele`s tones and incredible 👍
Always loved the products coming out of monty's. Good quality, great sounding and at a fair price
I have that exact Squier tele!! It sounds and plays amazing just as is. Chicago music Exchange here in the states. Awesome guitar
love my Monty's Tele pickups and switch/loom - need some more!
Get Montys pickups. I have a set of Pete's version in my purple Squire Tele CV. Outstanding. BTW not a relic fan in fact chipped some paint. Found some purple glitter nail polish on Amazon that's a perfect match😃
The DP51 pickups really do sound absolutely stunning.
the CV's are pretty good stock and, upgraded are great. The Fender CS is just wow, and Petes purple G.O.A.T. is a legend....
I got a Maybach Teleman T54 that single handedly revived my addiction to telecasters, brilliant instrument. Well now, I also want a thinline tele!
The fender custom shop sounds great but i like the fatter sound of the stock squier pickups for my ear .😊
Pete's Tele was head and shoulders above for me.
I have used an iron (the kind you iron a shirt with) on poly finish to heat it up enough to make it easy to scrape off.
I just love to hear Pete play.
Great video. More upgrade videos. Loved seeing Pete show off a little at the end...
Yes captain another smasher, Looking forward for the new year some great things coming in 😉
I think everyone should have an expensive guitar and its entry level equivalent. It shows you how great a high end guitar sounds and also how good beginner guitars are today.
Words can't express how much I want that telecaster. Especially now that Pete has christened it...
Geez is it possible Pete has gotten even better than usual? That last segment with all of the guitars. So tasty.
Aahhh. Thank you Pete💪❤️❤️🍸
Incredible tele, I have always been partial to the THINLINE!!!!!!!
Britt Daniele’s signature model seems like a contender
Pete making the standard squier thinline sound great
That was a great video,, love those pickups!! Relic was great job too
This sort of modification content is awesome!
Those DP51s sound killer!
Awesome playing from the King Pete
Good job on this one. I don't guess I'll ever understand why you'd pay someone to beat up your axe, but I hope you enjoy it Cap.
Pete has the secret sauce in his fingers lol Montys pick ups sound really good to be fair
Great video, not a great relic fan but Pete's playing blew it away, Great tele tones! :-)
Great episode this one. Love CV because of easy upgrades if you choose. And their good from the start. Thanks
Looks great!
I would’ve personally dyed the neck a bit more to make it not look soo pale.
I got a DIY tele kit for Christmas and can't wait to put it together , gonna do my own mods also....
best sounding one original squire by far !!!
My favourite humbuckers are the Monty's PAFs in my R8. They make great stuff!
Man I love telecasters, I’d love to have any of those three!
Just ordered the DP51T set.
I prefer the sound on the Squier. How mad is that
The relic job really just looks like someone sanded a new guitar, not really like years of aging. 30 years from now, Squiers will still look like new with their thick lacquer and expensive relic guitars will all have disintegrated :-)
I agree completely. The "relicking" doesn't even look "used". Just vandalized. Horrible., stinky-poo jobbies!
Absolutely KILLIN’ Pete!!!!
I’m with the relic haters. I don’t like silicone either 😬 Great channel though ✌️
The less money you spend on bass traps and other acoustical treatment, the more money you have to tweak your guitars and amps to get that perfect tone :-) :-). Happy Hols and thanks for all the great videos, looking forward to 2022.
This is amazing work
i prefer the last one awesome job.l
Awesome job! Great guitar! :)
I have a custom made telecaster (which I built) and when I had it setup, the luthier (who services Toni Iommis' guitars) said its just as good at custom shop. Modding your own is definitely the way sometimes.
What a cool outcome.
Makes me want to go buy a Classic Vibe and muck it up!
500K pots are an interesting choice!... Retaining that high end when you back off the volume
Sound is much improved on the modded Tele, but the Purple Tele really has no equal does it?
Very good video !
The Squier are the pickups Anilco 2, 3 or 5 ?
Cool, I did a joe strummer guitar on a polyurethane guitar, it painted easy but the polyurethane it thick
Great video!!!
Tempted to relic my purple metallic Danish Pete strat now...
As someone who can only afford Affinitys, this video made me sad. Poor old guitar, it looked so nice before.
I think there is a huge amount of untapped potential for guitar modding content on this channel!
Nice pickups Monty! I don't like relics. However, I think this kind of video is one of the best! The guitars all sound terrific. Maybe Monty should have plsyed on a bit. He sounds good. Try this on an Infinity. That would be very interesting. Thanks!
Love Tele Thinline models and those black/silver aesthetics. I think I’m going to have pick one of those up…😎🤘🏻
Aaah the FB post yesterday makes MORE sense now!
Phenomenal job! Good job Matt 👍🏼
The pickups in the customized squier sound the best imho
That guy is a genius ! His mod guitar sounds better than the high end guitar. Well done.
More content like this. MORE.
Instead of sanding the guitar directly to relic it,
I've just had a brilliant idea to do it more naturally.
You could relic them by playing the guitar but greatly accelerate the process by strategically placing super fine sandpaper (1500 grit, or maybe 1000 grit if you wanted to be brutal) all over yourself with double sided tape.

The wear would occur naturally as it would have done from normal playing but at a very accelerated rate.
Great idea! You could also play it while being sucked up inside a tornado or maybe throw yourself down the side of a mountain while playing.
I wish you could get a classic vibe tele, in black, with a black pickguard, and brass compensated saddles. Double bound.
Geez. Looks nowt like it. If that was my full time job I'd be embarrassed. Always strive for perfection. Start over mate.
Best upgrade pick ups on the market
What pickups are in Pete's purple Tele? Monty's website says the DP51s are based on Pete's originals.
Now I have to ask myself if I want the Captain's Tele or if I'd rather have the full Monty.
I see monty is a crimson fan, good on him
Monty’s pickups sound much closer to the custom shop.
My Monty’s PAF pickups just arrived yesterday coincidentally.
Proud worker of charlie chandlers !!
I took a classic vibe years ago and used a heatgun and sander and tool it down to bare wood. The body lost over half a pound
I liked the Monty Mod Tele Best of the 3
The only issue with modding a squier is a neck, which tends to be made of cheaper wood. It is not exactly dry, it often twists with time and is more prone to react to conditions changes
Hi will there be anymore black classic vibe thinlines on order
Can you recommend wax for the neck? Got a ray gerold dlx tele 2015 with a waxed neck and i am looking for a product to keep it good
I think the only people who REALLY relic poly guitars well is Novo. But they make their own, so that helps. I can't imagine relicing a new poly guitar
Can you do a mod Epiphone Les Paul next? A nice burst with some high end pickups and hardware would be nice to hear.
Y’all should try and make a squier Strat into a Jim Root one I think it’d be a good video
Is the montys tele going to be a competition prize 😁😁
