HOW TO RETURN SIDE SPIN SERVE'S:
Table tennis has one major element that set's it apart from many sports, SPIN. In this sport the ball can rotate over 100 times per second, so as you can imagine, handling that amount of spin is extremely difficult.
In this tutorial, we try to help you by giving you a few tips on how to handle spin and contract oncoming side spin.
    Tip no.1
Understanding the contact point and aiming to hit the ball where the opponent initially connects with the ball. Once you see where the opposing player has connected with the ball, your aim is to contact the ball in the same zone/area. This generally will be a position that goes against the spin that's currently on the ball.
    Tip 2
Acceleration, it's not enough just going against the spin, you must accelerate just before the point of contact. This gives you control over the oncoming ball and effectively will override the spin currently on the ball. if you do not accelerate, then the spin on the ball will take effect at the point of contact and spin-off your bat in a sideways motion.
    Tip 3
You can also use other strokes to return sidespin as you develop and the most effective return would be a flick stroke. but again you will need to pay attention to which sidespin you're receiving. this is in order to direct the ball in the opposite direction of where the spin would like to carry the ball.

That's great, thanks. I had a quick lesson from an advanced player the other day and he taught me this same stuff. he said to aim for the opposite side of the table to the direction of the opponent's bat swing. last night I had the chance to put this into practice against a player who was getting cheap points on his spin serves last time I played him. This time, it was a totally different story. he still won but it was much closer and he only won maybe four points on un-returned serves in the four sets we played.

All excellent pointers. An easier way to remember for a right handed server, aim return where the bat head starts. For pendulum serve bat direction R-L, aim to server R. The opposite for reverse pendulum L-R, aim server L. If you miss detecting direction of side spin, aim for center line.

Excellent pointer , the way i remember : aim the ball in direction the threat comes From = receiver's point of view : server's bat goes from Right to Left = aim Right

I didn't quite get this. I am a right handed intermediate player. I find it hard to return when opponent (mostly right handed) does a side spin pendulum serve that usually spins to my left. Can you break it down? Where and how do i aim to return. Also is it better to receive it in backhand or forehand

@@hkrishnan91I get confused with directions but compare to this: backspin is applied by hitting the ball from top to bottom. On return you try to aim higher. If you hit flat, rhe ball will move downwards towards the net because thats the backspin thing. Just remember that. You aim to the opposite direction of the opponents bat when it hit the ball.

Side spin is one of the Trickiest to handle. Well, only issue is watching & understanding which side of Racket hit the ball while Server is Serving is probably the toughest thing to do atleast till Intermediate level. But I liked the last Bonus Tip where he said Bring both Head & the other hand close to the Ball - To Control the Spin of the Ball. That makes lot of sense.

Aim to where the bat came from at the point of contact. That works for sidespin and topspin/backspin. Eg, a chop serve the bat comes from above, so aim up. Topspin the bat comes from below, aim down.

@@hkrishnan91 You tend to have more control with the backhand, some even move across the table to return with the backhand. With a right hander doing a pendulum serve (and assuming no wrist flicking or other arm movement at the point of contact), the bat would tend to come from your left, and from slightly up. So it would either be mild chop or float with sidespin, so you should aim slightly up and to your left. Lot's of variations though, here's a good explanation of how the sidespin makes it want to go to the right

I think the next level video of watching the racket angle and contact point of the server for different variations (backspin+sidespin combo) shall help as that's the time confusion is more.

This is why the tomahawk serve is the deadliest side spin serve. Partially hiding the racket under the head makes it difficult for the opponent figure out where exactly the ball was hit. With just a little wrist movement, tomahawks can be side backspin, side top spin, or pure side spin.

Can we also say that you can basically return every spin by mirroring the movement and the angle of your opponent's racket (as if you are watching yourself in the mirror), meaning if he/she goes from left to right from where you stand/your viewpoint (sidespin), you should move your racket from left to right, and if his racket goes underneath the ball, and from behind where he stands towards the net (backspin), you can you do the same - move your racket from where you stand towards the net, underneath the ball. Is this about right?

@@ebatt8803 The question, that I put is really a mystery for me. Especially, that my partners have different levels and some of them are not very good. But ALL of them employ the same movement and it works. More to the point, they use it, of course, between themselves. And against the gays that have very weird services. And it works with them as well. As I say it a mystery for me and gets me on the nerves. I see things like your videos, everybody underlines the importance of the angle of the racket, your demonstration confirms it as well. But. But in our circle, just moving the racket under the ball, fast parallel to the table works perfectly. I mean really perfectly. The returned ball is low, with underspin and well placed.

@@LeoTaxilFrance if you are able to generate enough arm speed and velocity which has more speed than the current spin on the ball (serve receive) then you in effect will over ride the spin given to you. And that is why the players you speak of are able to receive the way the do and get away with it...

Very good question very hard for me to answer this but I’m simple terms you should loop with pure topspin and aim a little towards the other direction of the spin. If your topspin is very high quality you will over ride any spin

Great tutorial. I really didn't know that to return sidespin you need to hit the ball the same side the opponent did. Also can you make a tutorial how to return sidespin topspin shots. I find it quite difficult and I think lots of amateur players do.

That technique is fine and proper at the more early stages, but at some steps higher or with a offense mentality, you can hit it at the other side of the ball, doing a top/side spin in the direction of the ball rotation, and inclining the angle of the bat for ball positioning. (at least in my experience)
