- In this video I show you how to return different types of sidespin serve.
Not all sidespin serves are the same. You can get get sidespin with backspin or sidespin with topspin. Sidespin serves can be short or they can be long. They could be served to your forehand or to your backhand.
In the video I show you how do you deal with these different variations - how to read the spin and which strokes to play. In particular, I explain how to return...
- Short sidespin with backspin
- Long sidespin with backspin
- Short sidespin with topspin
- Long sidespin with topspin
Many players, especially at beginner and intermediate level, find it difficult to return sidespin serves, but if you follow my approach you will find it much easier to return these tricky sidespin serves.

I think I'll stick to my Phd. It's much simpler.
😂😂😂
😂
For defensive returns on side-backspin, I tend to favor mirroring the opponent's serve. This negates the sidespin and gives you better control over placement. After mastering this, flicking or driving the ball on the opposite side is more intuitive.
I also do the same...it works wonders to recieve but then the ball which goes is easy for the other person to attack...as side spins has been neutraled by u..
The positive element of returning helped me understand and return serve better, thank you so much.
Tom---absolutely fantastic explanation and demonstrations!
Great video. I was letting these bounce off my paddle instead of pushing or driving them. Thanks for explaining!
I've watch so many videos how to return serve, but so far your videos give the best explanation, reduce all the complicated things about the side spin. Thank you master
Hello there, I am commenting to let you know that I've been trying to find this kind of videos for so long and you are actually the only one who really helps... For me you are the best, you are doing a good job. I subscribed and loooved this video too.
The best video you have ever made on this channel! Great topic and simple answers.
Thanks John!
I'm playing lot of Eleven Table Tennis game lately and Your videos are fantastic at getting me up in rantings. Yesterday I encouraged player with really strong side-spin serves that killed Me. Now I know that I lost because i try do be to defensive and wasn't using positive strokes. Also Your videos about faking topspin or backspin in serves is giving me lot of easy points in matches online. Thanks :)
Thanks,I didn't even notice until now that i was just blocking it back instead of pushing just because I was so hesitant to return these.
Did this for a full year. Rip all my 2018/2019 matches...
Thanks for the video. I am glad that you covered more than just one type of side spin
You presented good tackling with a variety of spin serves, thanks Tom.
Loved it. Your lessons are so thorough. Thank you.
Best video ever about side spin. Congrats
Excellent again Tom, so much to do with confidence to be positive, thank you
For this channel is what I know play table tennis.
Thanks so much, I’ve been struggling with my game recently and identified that this was my weakness, this video beautifully explained how to counter side spin
Thank you so much, my brother just started TT club and trying to learn. Nobody explained me what is top spin and back spin until today. I fail to return spin serve 5 out of 5 most of the time. I am going to practice your lesson
Great information! I haven’t played for 20 years, and last night I had this issue. I’ll be definitely putting this into practice 😁👍
Very good video, applies to me misreading sidespin top spin and side spin back spin. I hope to put these tips into practice. Thanks very much!
Very thorough explanation on something that has caused me so much frustration!!
Wowww, you made it look so simple and easy to tackle side spin serve.
I was having really hard time to return this serve.
this is what I was looking for long time
Very good video about sidespin serves, thanks Tom!
The positive stroke part is really interesting. I never considered that in the equation and I have to admit that, if I'm facing someone with heavy spin serves, I'm a bit more defensive and just try to read the spin and hold the racked correctly. But it always feels super risky and uncontrolled. I will try your tips and see if this works with heavy spin!
Really helpful video and great explanation Tom!
Feeling a lot more confidence, thanks Tom!!
in short : don't do a passive play (block, push, drive, put, etc) because without brushing (i.e. being "passive") the sidespin is gonna act on your rubber and fly away accordingly
instead : do an active play (flick, push, drive, loop, etc) or being said, "positive stroke" to override the sidespin using brute force so you can play the ball normally.
the key here : BRUSH the ball, don't just wait with open angled racket for the ball to bounce at yours.
One of the best videos, hands down
Very work and simple,thank Mr...
A good players doesn't mean he can be a good coach. A good coach do not have to be national player. Tom is good coach ! He is sincere and honest, and make us understand how to play in different situations. Not every player can do it. Cheers from Singapore.
That's a simple thing many people don't understand. They think that the better you play, the better you should coach and viceversa. And that's not true at all.
In football, for instance, there are many coaches that have never played the sport.
Maradona is considered one of the two bests of history and as a coach he wasn't very good.
Absolutely a gem of a video. Thanks for addressing the basic nerve
So true🙆♀️
Great video--breaks this down in a way one can understand.
Very well structured and easy to understand
I was taught to either angle the paddle based on the direction of sidespin or apply sidespin of the same direction. But figuring out how much spin in what direction is intense mental gymnastics. Never considered ignoring it altogether a strategy before haha
Excellent video as per usual, keep saying this but the quality and simplistic explanations are very useful to improve your game.
Well done Tom !
I think same what you.
Thanks Tom! It is very much helpful.
Thank you Tom! this was helpful.

Great tip about being too tentative. That's what I've been doing, and every time the ball just shoots off my racket.

This is the part where i'm feeling stressful while playing TT. often i find my self unable to receive my opponent serve and that become easy peasy point for my opponent. Im feeling so useless. thank couch Tom for the the clear tutotial. and about to practice it soon
Make sure you do lots of practice returning serves. Every time you play - with every partner - ask them to serve at you for a few minutes. This is a good way at getting better at returning serves.
The best teacher
thank you for your help
Very good. Thanks !.
Very useful!
Great video!
Thank you for your Videos. I hope you will touch also on the type/brand of rubber. If these rubber will handle, especially underspins, easily and how to make adjustments. I cannot afford to buy expensive rubbers. Thank you very much.

Thank you.
Good explanation
Great video. Enjoying your channel. Just been getting back into table tennis after a couple year break. This particular video was VERY helpful - thank you!
Thanks David. Glad you find this video useful. Hope you keep on playing and improving.
@@TomLodziak thanks :)
Thanks many!
I am an beginner in table tennis and I have a reasonably good game of back spin which involves a strong slice (or a weak) with my wrist(usually a strong slice) and movement of shoulder
I can also do top spin fairly well
but in both I at times lack control and the ball goes outside the table
I have been told long pips rackets are good for choppers and spin players
should I buy it
or are their drawback like I have heard you cannot attack the ball using long pips
I am going to try thie this today
Bravo!
nice, thanks
Please put video for short pipes backhand players. Like pushing with backspin blocking Topspinig with Shortpipes
