  • Today's video covers a shoulder blade mobilization technique that I use with my patients who have shoulder pain when reaching overhead. Arm elevation includes a combination of shoulder joint flexion (120 degrees) and upward rotation (60 degrees) of the shoulder blade. When these two are summed together, we see approximately 180 degrees of total motion, which allows us to reach fully overhead.
A limitation in motion at either the shoulder joint or scapulathoracic (shoulder blade) joint can be associated with a diagnosis of ‘shoulder impingement’ and lead to pain in the superior shoulder region.
In many cases where shoulder complex range of motion is limited and/or pain is experienced when reaching overhead, the shoulder blade upward rotation mobilization shown here can be helpful.
To perform this mobilization, have the subject reach up until they experience pain. Then, support their arm and pull the shoulder blade into upward rotation. If the mobilization is helpful, they will notice an immediate decrease in pain and an increase in range of motion.
