If it broke when it was still a solid piece, how will it hold up now that it is three pieces joined by a thread and a surface weld? It will break with half the effort.
Considering he tightens it with a pipe wrench directly on teeth of gear, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Work with what you got basically. He probably has 30/30 warranty, 30 feet or 30 seconds, which ever comes first.
This reminds me of the old smithy where I was allowed to make these kind of repairs when I was a apprentice. Keeping the old machines up and running with repairs instead of expensive new parts. Nowadays we just throw it in the bin and get new parts or even scrapping the whole thing. But hey, modern times, modern ways. Love to watch these guys.
Yeah, with what he has to work with and doing it wearing sandals, my hat is off to the man. Couple things, I’m no welder, but I know that that kind of a shaft with that kind of a weld when you change the metallurgy like that and you don’t do a preheat and a post heat and all other stuff, it’s bound to fail in service as someone wrote with half of the torque that it took to break it originally. Second It’s really hard on the machine tool to be welding over the bed without any protection that way, and I know they could at least throw a piece of burlap over it to protect lathe, which seems to be a pretty nice lathe. One last thing, since I am by trade a repair machinist, he probably doesn’t have a dial indicator, but to make sure those two ends of the shaft are running true when you do your stubbing is absolutely essential for it to run properly in service.
I did this kind of work in my dad’s shop.HOPEFULLY he is doing this to get the machine running and orders a new part or find the whole unit.🤷♀️Love the safety sandals.😂
It is a quick fix. The smart way is to put in service and then order a replacement. Mechanical Engineer with shop floor expetirnce here. They do not have CNCs there, so they make do with whatever they've got available.
I think they could have used a milling machine to finish the grooves, and used a spline shaft instead threads , but it would make the repair far more expensive.
Surprised they're not using any coolant while cutting or oil cuz if you don't it wears the cutting bit down quicker. I worked in the machine shop for many years. That's the reason for all that squealing noise shouldn't be that much

These highly skilled lathe machine operators most likely don't have any college degree. They just learned it by working with their masters over the years. Good job. 🇨🇦
Most machine shop operators in the world don’t have college degrees, some cnc machinist do, you don’t get degrees as an apprentice or from a technical school, you get a qualification or certification.l

He was delivering some farm product or log of wood. He just needs to go a little further up the street and deliver, get his money and go home. Otherwise he won't have his day's bread. So anything that lasts a few more hours is good enough.
When I was an apprentice I watched my boss do basically the same thing on a pitman ball on a large punch press, even then I thought how can this be safe for someone to operate.
He made a nice lamp stand. A truly skilled craftsman would make a new one. You just dont fix this type of product. Its just not possible. If it was then why would the factory make them from precisely ground hardened steel. Why bother if you van just weld bits together. 😂😂😂 The guys you see on the video are just practising using their machines ..

could be true, it's also possible that it broke because of a defect, and the replacement material used in this repair is defect-free. who noze

Amazing how many here who don't have any engineering knowledge are passing this off as a perfect repair. It isn't, it will fail very quickly.

The repair looks OK untill it fails again under the normal stresses it was designed for.

I wonder what the runout on the gears are ?
When I was an apprentice I watched my boss do basically the same thing on a pitman ball on a large punch press, even then I thought how can this be safe for someone to operate.
The final weld was for final product presentation and marketing purposes only.
Outstanding job sadly the trade is fading away in most cases.
Is this possible? After the entire process was completed, the gear gaps in the welded area were not measured.🤔
