  • Burn Up is a lady action title that helped put a small Texas distribution company on the map, kickstarted a franchise and gave one of my favorite dub actresses her big break. But almost three decades later, does this anime still burn hot?

I've been watching these reviews in random order for the past month, and I gotta say... You make fantastic content! It's almost like you're playing devil's advocate with retro anime compared to other reviewers. Your overall approach is enjoyable and engaging👍

I cannot for the life of me remember where I read my favourite joke about A.D. Vision. A magazine or somewhere joked about A.D. Vision calling it "B.C. Vision" saying it stood for "Bubblegum Crisis Vision" or more accurately "Big Chest Vision."

can't believe there's someone making videos with this quality and not being seen by hundreds of thousands.
your content is stuff that a lot of people would find interesting, is well researched and educated on the subject, you upload frequently, and it easily reach beyond 10 minutes without filler or making me lose interest halfway.
I've been binge watching your videos and noticing that you've been doing them for YEARS and some of them don't even break 1k views! it's a CRIME.
I'll be sharing your videos with as many people as I can, I hope you get the recognition you deserve soon and that you keep making videos because I'm honestly addicted to them.

@@regidio5083 I know he'll blow up soon enough, it's bound to happen, he keeps uploading at a consistent rate and it's grade A content. That said, the looney tunes vids did get some traction, for now all we can do is support him on patreon if possible

I got to have a nice conversation with Tiffany Grant one time.
During the semester after I graduated college, the anime club held a small convention. I decided to go, since most of the club would still be there. I went up to the campus for the weekend and stayed with my roommate, who still had a semester left. We woke up that Saturday to about 1 and a half feet of snow and no power in the apartment. We went across the road to campus to find that there was also no power there as well. My roommate and I decided we'd help the club with the various fiascos brought on by back-up generators and below freezing weather. Later that day, we stopped at Tiffany Grant's table. She had what she called her garage sale, with a bunch of ADV nick-nacks spread out on the table. We took a seat and she was nice enough to chat with us for about 2 hours or so. She's a very nice lady and she explained to me how airport hubs work.

Good timing I just wheeled out the franchise recently myself, now I really wanna watch it again, though I wasn't as much a fan of the first take as I was of Burn Up W. What can I say, Bubblegum Crisis and Gunsmith Cats are my kind of girls anyway,

Burn up wasn't bad. Some of the shots were really good though.... wasn't there "burn up W" as well?. I don't remember any of it though. My brain has become feeble. :D
A.D.V was located in Houston TX. I actually had known some of the prior owners/operators, when Gametronix (import gaming store) was in business. (I think there was a wierd/sour split of sorts, from gametronix to A.D.V., if I remember correctly.) They always told me to come on in and do a voice screen test. I wish I did. I never got around to it, even if I didn't get anything, I should had made time for it, just to see.
I'm also looking for an OVA, that nobody remembers, and it was a " two pack" deal. The anime was called "GUY: Double Target", and I can't find it for the life of me. It was around the same time Plastic Little was out. So, it had lots of T&A to it. Curious if anyone remembers it, or knows where to find it.

Woooooow, I fucking remember renting this fucking on VHS when Houston Texas still had Hollywood video. It was like my first time seeing an "adult" animation. I still remember, after remembering something about this anime, the line "YOU SON OF A BITCH!" and that freaky ass guy who always says hello in some slow elongated fashion.
This... This was one hell of a nostalgia trip. Can't say I found it too good as a kid save for seeing guns firing though. I remember scenes like the interrupted sex scene that was going to take place in the car to. Other than that, I don't remember a god damn thing about it.

I actually have a huge soft spot for ADV as well, and I consider Excel Saga to basically be their single greatest work. EVERYTHING about them were firing on all cylinders with that one. Out of everything i've watched, I consider it to be the 2nd greatest dub i've ever seen. Even to the point where I honestly think English Excel Saga managed to be vastly superior to Japanese Excel Saga.
When watching several episodes in Japanese, I really only ever chuckled a few times. But upon watching those same episodes, and then the entire REST of the series again from start to finish with the dub, I could not stop laughing uproariously from my gut until my stomach literally hurt from laughter, due to both the script AND the line reads AND the way that it shaped the overall material into something all it's own.
And I feel like they really went out of their way to make it the crown jewel of their library, too. From the merch they were pushing, to the vast amounts of EXTRA English-only audio content added to it, from fake commercials, to DVD extra bonus features, to even entire newly written speils on the DVD menus themselves, not even some of most of my all time favorites from the likes of Funimation (another company with actors I hold in high regard, personally) stack up to Excel Saga itself, for me.
For me the ONLY dub that has managed to be even more expertly crafted and finely honed as a love-letter and huge effort to raise up and embolden the strengths of it's own source material, is Funimation's One Piece. But Excel Saga will always be my second favorite English Dub, and I say this as someone who primarily watches English versions and have personally viewed and internally rated the hundreds i've heard over the years.
..which is strange for me to say, seeing as one of my favorite niche-franchises that recieved an anime that has one of the WORST English Dubs i've ever watched........... came from Galaxy Fraulien Yuna. ......which was ALSO an ADV joint. Huh.
Oh well.... when I think of ADV, I still think happy memories of Azumanga Daioh, Excel Saga, Pani Poni Dash, and Gunsmith Cats, among others, and how they used to be THE company that I would always consider their logo to be a "usual" mark of quality, just like the feeling a retrogamer used to have back when a Capcom or Konami logo would adorn the cover of their favorite NES titles.
P.S: I REFUSE to associate Eva with ADV because I harbor an intense, burning, passionate hatred for that fucking anime TO this day and I will never relent on how I find it to be complete, irredeemable garbage.

It's interesting how being a dub viewer influences your opinions on not just individual anime but licensors themselves. As a sub-only viewer I always considered ADV to be merely OK. My love was for Pioneer/Geneon because they had a stronger slate of the seinen series that I prefer.

Though some might disagree I actually prefer Kimberly's Yuka (who looks more like a cutesy Nene from Bubblegum Crisis) to Kumiko Nishihara's in the Japanese version. Nishihara is a good seiyuu but her voice was way too cute sounding for the role, her performance was the weakest of the three Japanese actresses too.
