  • The era of the hyper-violent OVAs of the 80s made it fertile ground for adapting the work of Go Nagai. Specifically, one most famous works Devilman. We at the Devilman OVAs of the late 80s and see how they are so horrifically beautiful.

Funny Story: I quoted the infamous. "Oh of course, it's my old friend Ryo, how the hell have you been keeping then?" Line to Kyle McCarley (Ryo in Devilman Crybaby) at a Convention, and he laughed out loud. He LOVES that cheesy Manga UK dub!
On a different note, I find it interesting how the U.S. fandom did a 180 on this OAV after Crybaby came out. I remember all the reviews of the 80s OAV being negative, describing the 2-parter as violent schlock with no ending. But now that the U.S. has proper context for Devilman, people have come around on it, and rightly so! It's pretty good in spite of its faults.

I've been a fan since I was in elementary. My mom got this for me at blockbuster when I was a kid (every tuesday being new movie night) and she let me pick out whatever. Honestly it's my favorite anime based purely on nostalgia and the only real media we've had for devilman for so long. The fact that it's just now being recognized as genuinely good animation makes me happy, but there's a part of me that's kind of disappointed and sad it hadn't been recognized for so long as one of the greats. The dub isn't very good, but all in all, it's still a wonderful story.

Is it terrible that I love the English dub more then the subtitled version because of its fowl language and gross innuendos, it just comes off more like stuff you'd actually hear ultra violent evil demons to say. Same with hearing Devilman say because he is still a teenager who is just hopped up on demon aggression and hes trying to sound cool & intimidating but is also partly out of it so isn't going to say something poetic or smart.

I would recommend the OVA Shin Getter Robo Armageddon, it's based off of the series Getter Robo that was created by both Go Nagai and his friend Ken Ishikawa. Its 13 episodes long and is about Getter Robo and its pilots trying to save the world from parasitic aliens, it has some good animation but the story is a bit of a mess since the original director left after episode 3. There are some elements of horror especially with the aliens.

Really enjoyed both your Lupin videos. They really are 2 of the greatest entries in the franchise and the direct oposite of each other. If you want to introduce someone to the franchise these 2 are a perfect way to do so. Both present extremes. If your taste lies somewhere on the axis these 2 movies are endcapping chances are, you will find something in the franchise for you to enjoy. Hope there is more Lupin from you in the future.
My favorite movies could also be described as direct oposites. One realistic with a serious plot and all plot points resolved in a satisfying way. The other insane without any care about any of it's plot points whatsoever.
I am of course talking about Voyage to Danger and Green vs Red.
The former being almost a Bond movie that takes itself very serious. No weird faces. No over the top slapstick. The plan is to rob the money of an international arms dealer by infiltrating his organisation with the promise to bring him nukes in order to stay afloat in an increasingly competitive arms market. The later being simply about the thrill of being Lupin. It introduces themes, oddities and topics only to go. "Hey, that's weird. Anyways - moving on."
Voyage to Danger was my entrypoint into the series. In Germany MTV just took 3 or 4 specials that were modern at the time, cut them into several episodes and aired it as a series. It was the only Lupin media available in Germany at the time. It really did have quite the impact on me.
green vs red was a movie i avoided for the longest time as the internet never had to say anything good about it. A promising premise with every Lupin adventure being canonized as there are just many many Lupins. (Interesting for a franchise that has no canon between entries) Yet it failed to deliver on any topics it introduced. Watched it earlier this year for the first time and loved it unironically. It's like a movie from Lupins perspective. He cares about one thing only: to have the time of his life every waking moment. And that makes sense as he lives life in a way where he could die any moment. Why should i have a stand-off pointing guns at each other? Let's raise the stakes by pointing my gun at a nuke. That's how gvr works. Lupin just goes with the flow without question. If something disappears he won't care about it. So the only way to watch the movie is to not get invested about anything but the excitement. Because if you do, you will hate the movie for not resolving anything.

Is very gruesome in a way that feel more like enjoying the death of a child than trying to show something. And overall I like Crybaby more. Is so much more emotional. I actually felt empaty for every character for the first time. And even the death of the kid there was made in a much more sad and depressing way with much less gore.
