I was at a convention appearance where Takachiho was a guest. Most of his talk was about how difficult it was for his anime studio to get work even though he has a decent track record and lots of history and contacts in the industry (which is something I usually tell to people who think that they can sell their "anime idea" for lots of money), but he also discussed the story you related about going to the wrestling match. In the version I heard, it was Takachiho making a joke about the two girls who went along with them as being the Dirty Pair. He was telling the foreigner who didn't know much about Japanese pro wrestling the name of the wrestlers were the Beauty Pair, and then, as a joke, he turned to his two assistants and called them the Dirty Pair. This version makes more sense than the guest making the joke. After all, the guest had just met them, so the joke would be a little strange. Whereas for the studio boss, it's generally okay (especially in the '70s and '80s) for him to tease his employees.
This is such an excellent video. Informative with well developed opinion points. I adored this show. Beautiful animation, charming characters, and fun episode plots made for a relentlessly entertaining series. I couldn't agree with your recommendation more.
Why don't you have thousands of likes?! You do really in depth anime breakdowns with informed specificity like no other. I really don't understand. At any rate I usually agree with all of your personal insights and tastes in Japan's greatest anime selections. However I am still not able to uncover really great anime and I wanted to suggest a Good and Bad list or something of that sort because it took me a while to find an anime you gave a "thumbs up" to watch. I immediately clicked off alot of videos to find something cool that you suggested. At any rate thank you for doing what you do on this channel! 🙏 You are a great editor and a tasteful critic. Don't ever quit !

so glad i found your videos, i had an interest in older spheres of anime but only ventured cautiously. your vids are giving me some good stuff to add to my WTWL, most everything on the production side is pretty good, your audio and editing solid and i only see them improving with each video.
I love this video! It got me to sit down and watch Dirty Pair and I really liked it! Gonna buy it on DVD. Also thank you for sourcing the songs you used in your video! Not enough creators on UA-cam will do that and it makes it really hard to find songs, so thank you for making the process easier!
Enjoyed the experimentation of The Dirty Pair given the comic book boom in 1992 while still captivating with the cyberpunk futurism of the 1980s earlier. The Dark Horse mangas in the early 1990s were still impressive until their last epic in 2000. The series under Adam Warren is an artistic treat as author, inker and illustrator.
11:06 Wanted to ask cause it caught my attention. who was the staff who worked on the animation or rather the studio? because this clip where Kei is flipping through channels, goes past a scene where a bunch of black suited people are flying on what looks like Sky cutters from Thundercats and Thundercats was animated by Pacific Animation Studio, did someone from there also worked on Dirty Pair and just did the design from memory because they didn't specify the scene? or was this intentional like the homage to King Kong vs. Godzilla? this is why i love animation history cause you never know who worked on what and if they ended up doing this visual references or designs for other projects lol
Still my favorite anime series this day. Im happy and lucky enough to have a couple of animation cels of the pair in my collection :) also gotta love all the cross references between this series and Star Trek The Next Generation
Amen brother. Every incarnation of DP is wonderful in its own way. Somehow that is just the nature of how the intellectual rights were managed on this property. They weren't allowed to copy previous designs.
@@chrisbanbury mmmm, to me Dirty Pair flash is.... quite forgettable, was waiting for something more, didn't feel there was any vibe and felt overall that the serie wasn't that enjoyable... a big middle tier 90's anime, nothing too awefull, nothing too awesome. I was sad because I was a fan of the duo.
Who here in 2024 is trying to wait patiently for the English dub to release almost three years since the Kickstarter is complete? I am worried that, ever since the Crunchyroll merger, it has turned into either a scam or an erasing of classic anime history. I don't want Kei and Yuri's adventures to be forgotten.
And yet when Rosario+Vampire went from a dark, serialized story to a light-hearted episodic anime, people constantly complain because "it's not like the manga"...
my only experience with dirty pair is the many weird interesting english language manga with them en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dirty_Pair the world of english manga based on anime is fascinating. (stuff based on leiji matsumoto ones being the weirdest just for existing and for apparently not having permission to be made?)
Mughi is in the books, he's just been majorly re-designed. Since as originally described, he's a coeurl (a scifi creature that made it into D&D as the displacer beast). This may not have been easy to animate, AND could have caused legal issues (remember this is around the Lensmen TV brouhaha).
Oh wow.. I remember a few years ago that letsplay channel gamegrumps released merch with them as 80s anime "game gyarus" Had no idea they just completely stole these characters designs
I know you don’t cover the mangas too much. For me it was the manga that worked best for explaining these two characters. It would be interesting to see you re-review these animes with consideration in reflection of the manga.
Thank you so much, i really began to be attracted to watch dirty pair, but i didn't know if i should give it a chance. but this is really informative, retrospective and really gives me a sing of what is really about this anime. Thank you so much.

@n n Oh fuck off, stop using the term "SJW" other than what it really is: an imaginary boogeyman that doesn't actually exist, created by complete douchebags so they'll have a pretend enemy to use as a strawman argument to justify their discarding of ethical responsibility.
No, he actually was voiced by Keiichi Nanba, who was also voicing Katz from Zeta at the time, and would later go on to voice Aphrodite in Saint Seiya and Zoisite and Umino in Sailor Moon.
I'm planning to get all of Dirty Pair eventually. I just need to do Affair of Nolandia, the Flight 005 Conspiracy and the OVA series before I get to Flash.
The only thing that bugged me about the early anime is the lack of detail in mouth movements. They just went with the cheap open/close route and it just looks poor in style. I still loved the anime though, and others like "Lum", "Outlanders", and especially "Bubble Gum Crisis".
There are so many redundant phrasings, double negatives and weirdly slurred deliveries of words in this narration. Was Kaiser popping pills for this recording or something? >_

Thanks for making this short video on the Dirty Pair. I love knowing that others still think about these two rascals, too.
I really enjoy Kei & Yuri's cameos throughout Urusei Yatsura and City Hunter.
They cameo in those shows?!
@@_mango_ yep, if you look in the right spots, you can find them among crowds. They often show up in Ataru's class

Classic anime, glad it is finally getting a blu ray release.
Just from watching the intro I knew I found my favorite thing in the world
Hey, man, don't be dissin' Adam Warren's mad skillz, yo.
He did good work on his adaptation for Dark Horse. I applaud his attention to the work.

Gotta disagree on the Dirty Pair Dark Horse comic - Adam Warren was and remains one of my favorite artists of all time. :)

An 80's anime that progressive? Makes me wonder how certain anime fans will see this, especially those with contradictory values.
Pfft they only watch anime with 16 yr old teen girls who look like they're 6 and have breasts the size of hot air balloons.
