Back in 1963/64, my dad said that the Stones wouldn't last more than a year. So I made a point every 10 years to let him know that the Stones were on tour. Some 55 years later I treated my adult kids to a Stones concert. Best Rock and Roll band to have ever exist!

He is one of the most talented, unselfish, down to earth human beings living today. After all these years it's hard not add one more obvious compliment. His inner strength must be rock solid in order for him to have held on to his sanity after living in a crossfire hurricane named the Rolling Stones for over half a century. What an incredible odyssey it has been for this eclectic man. His shyness and no small amount of humbleness has endeared him to his band mates and to the fans. His skills are praised from many very fine musicians. I’ve had the privilege to meet him and speak with him and even give him a gift. I will remember that as long as God gives me.

It does not mean that only Jagger and Richards wrote the song. While I agree that Jagger and Richards often laid out the blueprint for many of the songs (and spent more time in the mixing room than the other bandmates), the contributions that Bill, Brian, Charlie, and Mick Taylor (as well as numerous guest players) made on some songs cannot be overstated. Taylor was robbed of many songwriting credits, and we know Bill was key in the creation of Paint it Black and Jumpin' Jack Flash.

What a consummate professional and a great personality he had! He had perfect cadence, great fills and a certain swing to his playing. Started listening to the Stones 42 years ago when I was 8 years old and been listening to Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile, Black and Blue, Some Girls and Tattoo You all on loop since I heard the news...I focused on the drumming this time and heard new things, as always, from Charlie that I didn't catch the hundreds of times before. In fact, I've spent more time listening to the Stones than to my own family and friends. Rest in peace, Charlie!

What a gentleman!! Actually, by all accounts which I have read, it wasn't Charlie who was drunk when he hit Mick. Mick was & said something like -- you're MY drummer. Charlie immediately left hotel room, went to his room & dressed in Saville Row suit, complete with cravat, returned to room, punched Mick and said, "you're MY singer". Love it!!!
according to keith . charlie was asleep in his room around 2am when a drunk mick rang charlie and said hows my drummer , charlie then gets up and around twenty minutes later walks into the room immaculately dressed and clocks mick along with the famous "your my singer" reply, Keith claims he grabbed mick to stop him falling over a railing into a pool and calmed charlie down , according to keith the fact that mick was wearing keith's wedding coat and he didn't want it ruined was the reason he grabbed Mick and stopped charlie from giving him another smack , if you can believe that last bit.

An unassuming, decent gentleman who always had the perfect beat for every Stones song. He never overdrums but he plays in a way that you know he is there making an important contribution to every song.
I could listen to Charlie for ever... such an unassuming guy considering he is in the band he is in???...I love the fact he goes back to his everyday life after historic record breaking tours!!!...and one of the most understated drummers ever!
Thank you Charlie. Thank you to his family, his friends & everyone who helped & supported him so he could bring his work & playing to all of us. The Rolling Stones convinced me to BE a musician, singer & songwriter in 1981 when Tattoo You came out. Me & my friends talked our 5th grade teacher into letting us borrow the phonograph player from the school library, we put on the LP & air banded the whole album for the class on a rainy day for indoor lunch recess. I was Mick. I was never the same after hearing that record. What a unique drummer Charlie is & was. He sounds & seems like an interesting & special person, and a regular guy. This is not the end of a wonderful thing that will go on forever, but it sure feels like it for a terrible moment, and will certainly be the end of the opportunity to see greatness like this & his on the earth in person. Every passing day & soul I yearn for heaven & the afterlife more & more. Thank God for that. I used to be scared to die. Now I'm actually quite excited to see, be with, and hear them all again. Rest peacefully, Charlie...a little anyway...and then get back to what you do up there. We'll miss you for now.
It has been great for the Stones to have an anti rock star in their line-up. The Stones are very much rhythm driven and Charlie's hard won individuality and jazz inflected skills have been perfect for the band. To be faithfully married for 50 odd years is very refreshing..... Wearer of sharp suits.....he is nobody's fool and an absolute treasure..... Long Live Charlie......
I use to think "Charlie" was the weird one! Seriously! He was just so, mellow and in that lovely suit and tie playing his drums! Then when my dad told me about his being married to the same woman for so, long,(like child hood sweethearts), and he added, "The Stones" probably would not have survived if it weren't for the stable genius of Charlie" ;) My parent's, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousing, all devoted marriages and great till' deaths. That to me more than anything else! Thank you for being such a prime example of what human's can be and do with the right partner and love!!!!! Kudos!!!!!!!

It seems like yesterday when I was 19 and talking to my beautiful girlfriend Kathy in 1969 about how much longer the Rolling Stones would last it was almost seven years already, and here we are 49 years later and they are still performing and all alive, after all the sex and drugs except for Brian (God bless).
Keith was kind of cold about the whole thing. "After all we had been through, you didn't have to go and croak." - Keith on Brian leaving the band shortly before his death. I do however feel that Brian was the master of his own fate. He enjoyed the success "with reservations." Brian merely wanted to play blues without the reputation and stress of superstardom. In the end, he chose to distance himself from the band and the hype. It still cost him his life. God rest his soul.
Charlie and Bill the ultimate bottom. I can distinctly remember hearing Stones live 1964 tour. The bass and drums were a cut or two above the norm. Solid!
Charlie the reluctant Rock Star . But what a simple man . He does not live in the fast lane , ones cars and does not drive and is not caught up in the modern world too much and seems quite happy to be where and what he is . Amazing drummer , very humble and honest about the band the music and interviews . I love watching him and hearing him when he does speak.
A throwback. Class act. The rest of the world can admire guys who abuse drugs, destroy their families and end up in the tabloids. I prefer to look up to musicians of true character, like Mr. Watts.
Rich Boshart Never fear...Charlie isn't perfect in drug dept". I've heard him admit to being all in hard 'n heavy. In some older clips it is clear he is high, but thankfully it didn't last long.

Charlie is a treasure. I'm on the verge of 59 and I've been a Stones fan since I was a kid. Please take care of yourself Charlie. We love you and thanks for being a classy individual. Congrats on being married for over 50 years to the same woman. True and solid commitment to marriage vows in a career with so much temptation.
Such an honest interview and talk. He's a really nice, grounded and honest person - and beside this the real engine of this whole band Rolling Stones .... thanks for sharing this.

What a gentleman!! Actually, by all accounts which I have read, it wasn't Charlie who was drunk when he hit Mick. Mick was & said something like -- you're MY drummer. Charlie immediately left hotel room, went to his room & dressed in Saville Row suit, complete with cravat, returned to room, punched Mick and said, "you're MY singer". Love it!!!
according to keith . charlie was asleep in his room around 2am when a drunk mick rang charlie and said hows my drummer , charlie then gets up and around twenty minutes later walks into the room immaculately dressed and clocks mick along with the famous "your my singer" reply, Keith claims he grabbed mick to stop him falling over a railing into a pool and calmed charlie down , according to keith the fact that mick was wearing keith's wedding coat and he didn't want it ruined was the reason he grabbed Mick and stopped charlie from giving him another smack , if you can believe that last bit.

I';ve been drumming since '67 and Charlie and Ringo were my biggest influences at that time. The best groover that seemed to be timeless.....it's a sad day, RIP Charlie Watts

An unassuming, decent gentleman who always had the perfect beat for every Stones song. He never overdrums but he plays in a way that you know he is there making an important contribution to every song.

Charlie has always been my favourite Stone. He is very down to earth and shows no arrogance in his interviews.
I could listen to Charlie for ever... such an unassuming guy considering he is in the band he is in???...I love the fact he goes back to his everyday life after historic record breaking tours!!!...and one of the most understated drummers ever!

Thank you Charlie. Thank you to his family, his friends & everyone who helped & supported him so he could bring his work & playing to all of us. The Rolling Stones convinced me to BE a musician, singer & songwriter in 1981 when Tattoo You came out. Me & my friends talked our 5th grade teacher into letting us borrow the phonograph player from the school library, we put on the LP & air banded the whole album for the class on a rainy day for indoor lunch recess. I was Mick. I was never the same after hearing that record.
What a unique drummer Charlie is & was. He sounds & seems like an interesting & special person, and a regular guy. This is not the end of a wonderful thing that will go on forever, but it sure feels like it for a terrible moment, and will certainly be the end of the opportunity to see greatness like this & his on the earth in person. Every passing day & soul I yearn for heaven & the afterlife more & more. Thank God for that. I used to be scared to die. Now I'm actually quite excited to see, be with, and hear them all again. Rest peacefully, Charlie...a little anyway...and then get back to what you do up there. We'll miss you for now.

It has been great for the Stones to have an anti rock star in their line-up. The Stones are very much rhythm driven and Charlie's hard won individuality and jazz inflected skills have been perfect for the band. To be faithfully married for 50 odd years is very refreshing.....
Wearer of sharp suits.....he is nobody's fool and an absolute treasure.....

I use to think "Charlie" was the weird one! Seriously! He was just so, mellow and in that lovely suit and tie playing his drums! Then when my dad told me about his being married to the same woman for so, long,(like child hood sweethearts), and he added, "The Stones" probably would not have survived if it weren't for the stable genius of Charlie" ;) My parent's, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousing, all devoted marriages and great till' deaths. That to me more than anything else! Thank you for being such a prime example of what human's can be and do with the right partner and love!!!!! Kudos!!!!!!!

It seems like yesterday when I was 19 and talking to my beautiful girlfriend Kathy in 1969 about how much longer the Rolling Stones would last it was almost seven years already, and here we are 49 years later and they are still performing and all alive, after all the sex and drugs except for Brian (God bless).

Keith was kind of cold about the whole thing. "After all we had been through, you didn't have to go and croak." - Keith on Brian leaving the band shortly before his death.
I do however feel that Brian was the master of his own fate. He enjoyed the success "with reservations." Brian merely wanted to play blues without the reputation and stress of superstardom. In the end, he chose to distance himself from the band and the hype. It still cost him his life. God rest his soul.
He didin't leave the band he was sacked by the others for being impossible to work with

Charlie and Bill the ultimate bottom. I can distinctly remember hearing Stones live 1964 tour. The bass and drums were a cut or two above the norm. Solid!

Charlie the reluctant Rock Star . But what a simple man . He does not live in the fast lane , ones cars and does not drive and is not caught up in the modern world too much and seems quite happy to be where and what he is . Amazing drummer , very humble and honest about the band the music and interviews . I love watching him and hearing him when he does speak.

A throwback. Class act. The rest of the world can admire guys who abuse drugs, destroy their families and end up in the tabloids. I prefer to look up to musicians of true character, like Mr. Watts.
Rich Boshart Never fear...Charlie isn't perfect in drug dept". I've heard him admit to being all in hard 'n heavy. In some older clips it is clear he is high, but thankfully it didn't last long.
He actually had a heroin problem in the mid 80s. Got cleaned up to keep from losing his marriage.
Bare in mind he had his wild days , but he is from the pioneering days of real musicians and rock stars .

There's a good one with him taking us through his beloved drum set up ( on stage), and a very good one called 'If it Ain't got that Swing' talking about his style and influences. Well worth looking up. Also look up 'ABC & D of boogie woogie' with his life long friend, bass player Dave Green. Recommended!!

Literally watching this with chill bumps all over. The man. The myth. The legend…thinks of others first, sits in humility, recognizes his scope and reach without superiority and realistically balances the fame with what matters most. It’s what I do not who I am. And that is his pervasive charm. RIP Charlie
