@@stuarthossack5351 It's pretty well known that he doesn't sleep. He can go 3 days without sleeping & that's normal for him. He abused alcohol and heroin in the mid 80s but I don't think it lasted into the 90s.
Kevin Pippin How right you are. I didn't hear that delicious Amsterdam story until a few years ago. I heard it straight from Keith's lips during an interview and, oh how he enjoyed the hell out of relating it. King Jagger saved from landing unconscious in a canal thanks only due to Keith's cherishing of his own jacket that Mick had had the arrogance to put on without asking first. The interview can be found on UA-cam and it's a real pip. Charlie's telling of the same incident is naturally more low key, and yet between the two versions we can't help but get a fine insight into the three men as they really are and were during that period. Lesson learned, especially by Mick as Keith already respected and loved our hero: Do not fuck with Charlie Watts. I think I'll take another look at the interviews now, Keith's first for the sheer joy of his laughter and why that jacket saved Mick's life that stoned out night. Peace
I tried to relate that incident on a dfferent thread recently. You've put it much better ! I think they were collectively having ' mid life crises' at that time ! ps I gather that a really good punch is all about the timing and intent, not just a matter of brute strength haha !!
Oh. I've just remembered another related thing. When they were making Some Girls album Jagger got carried away & kicked Charlie's kit . Charlie gave him apiece of his mind & added ' & while we're at it stop laying into Ronnie all time ... ! it was something like that, I may have read it in one of Bill's books ?
I've sat through hours of legendary interviews with amasing talented people (that were often dead long before I existed). I think this one with Charlie may actually be my fave. This mans honestly and also his surprise and exception to audience laughs made him very lovable and iconic. So many talented and gifted drummers, I bet they all wish they were Charlie Watts.
The one Stone I always wanted to meet. Everyone who has says that he was just so down-to-earth and gracious. To me, he will always be a top-3 drummer. Exceptionally solid back beat, but never a show off.
The fact that most never notice his playing is because he plays the songs and never gets in the way, making him the best kind of drummer. Ringo is the same. Neil Peart, Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell and others get attention as busy-players; super talented and fit their bands as well. But people overlook simple. Simple rocks.
Charlie's drumming is bang on the middle of the beat whatever he plays. Solid drums is what allows musicians to float around doing the fannying about stuff!
Stewart Nicol as BILLY CONNOLLY _____ Actually he isn't. He is _behind_ the beat. In the Stones he plays behind Keith and swings it around a bit. Keith is the driver, Charlie is the conductor.
Stewart Nicol as BILLY CONNOLLY He has an uncanny ability to find that perfect interval, to play consistently right on the late side of the backbeat to create a pan exhilarating tension. I’m talking a few milliseconds. Magnificent player! The Stones would be lost without him.
With this performance his words and ROCK star status Charlie WATTS delivers great message for JAZZ . That's GREAT and so Honest and True for me . Thanks a lot to him .
Yeah, Charlie admitted on "60 Minutes" that he "dabbled" for a period in the 'eighties with heroin, amphetamines, and alcohol, simultaneously. He didn't say why or even how he got into it, but maybe he wondered what he'd been missing out on? Anyways, it's a good job that he cleaned up and landed on his feet--Music really can't do without him!
Just to put in a good word for Jonathan Ross. I must be difficult to get back one word answers to questions for a TV talk show, so on the whole I think he did a good job. Kept it light, got in a few laughs while staying respectful to Charlie.
Absolutely, Ross is genuinely interested and respectful to Charlie here, who was never a great interviewee (though seemed to relax a bit more in later years). I don't think he really liked talking about himself, hence why he perks up when it moves onto Charlie Parker.
Charlie was window shopping at Bergdorff Goodman 5th ave $ 57th st when I ran into him in Nov 1981.I saw the stones in concert in New Jersey during that period.
The funniest rock video I've ever seen is where they play' It's only rock and roll' in the tent full of bubbles!! Charlie is brilliant in it. If you've never watched it give it a go. Priceless.
Charlie Watts has special suits made to match the classic cars that he owns. Strangely enough, he doesn't drive. I guess when you're rich, they call that eccentric!!! LOL
Great interview of a charming and enigmatic superstar..... Similar in some respects to Ringo.....essential to the band's drive and power.....yet personally modest and self effacing..... Perfect as a foil to the outrageous Jagger and minimalist genius Richards Superb playout with Watts' be bop combo Wossy does a good job too.....showing big respect whilst being entertaining for the audience at large.....
A famous composer said Music is the space between the notes Charly Watts cleverly paused the hihat for each snare drum beat. Not easy but very effective.
I am a huge fan of drummers like Phil Rudd, Martin chambers & David Robinson but for me it all goes back to Charlie, Ringo and drummers of their ilk, where less is more and underneath the surface of it all is a huge musical IQ. Charlie is a class act and a world treasure.
In a way this great man reminds me of the race driver Kimi Räikkönen. Fierce and brilliant while at work and dry and witty as hell in public live. Very likable characters.
wasn't this around the period when richards and jagger fell out and they all sort of did their own thing for a while but you could almost tell from the off Charlie didn't want to be there but was more likely there to plug his new material.....nice!
How cool was he? Even just sitting there answering banal questions he was so polite and laid back. A true gent. A legend.
Agreed - JR is a tosser - still is
High as fuck
@@Fearzero That's how he acts dumbass

Gentleman of Rock - RIP Charlie ❤
Es por, nicely said👍
The epitome of cool who managed to stay true to himself ….I loved him then and I bloody miss him now ❤
Charlie may be gone now, but his memory will live on forever
You are completely correct about Charlie
So miss Charlie! He was the quiet rolling stone.
Excellent drummer! Rip Charlie 🙏!
“Why you all laughing?” Lol!! Charlie is as Charlie does. A no-bullshit character from the old school.
Charlie Watts, after all these years, never a sell-out.
So rare to hear charlie having a chat . A drumming legend
‘I’m sorry’ what a man. Just because he doesn’t play up to cameras. True gent
Charlie, what a bloke, so down to earth very humble. God bless you man
Melv Ashman Mick knows personally not to piss Charlie off.

I think that he his naturally high on earth. Mick said that sometime Charlie could be really upset and angry but not so often.
Charlie Watts a great drummer and a cool dude. I've always liked his air of seriousness and maturity.
Proper English bloke. Dapper, reserved and no bs. Class.

Will someone please tell Charlie how good he is!!!! He doesn't know it. Love ya Charlie!
The Wolling Stones. The Gweatest Wock 'n Woll Band In The World!
That comment made me waugh out woud and awesome name lol

My name is Elmer Fudd. I own a Mansion und a yacht.
Sounds like woss is taking the piss.
Wespect
met Charlie about 10 years ago and he was so nice and dressed just as classy - and he was coming off a transatlantic flight.
I have been fortunate to see the Stones 7-8 times and I LOVE that Charlie gets the largest cheer when the guys are introduced. lol
RIP Legend!
Lots of drummers can rock few can roll.
Charlie was and still is simply the best.
Probably one of the silliest Englishmen with conversely one of the most straightforward gents ever the great Charlie Watts
Aw when he says ‘I’m sorry’ after woss says (maybe sarcastically) ‘you’ve been great fun on the show’ . Charlie you ARE a legend. x
The one Stone I always wanted to meet. Everyone who has says that he was just so down-to-earth and gracious. To me, he will always be a top-3 drummer. Exceptionally solid back beat, but never a show off.
Charlie seems a genuinely nice and unaffected guy.
Genuinely nice guy? He comes across as a bit of a prick.
Thought that Charlie was much more complex that people think.
So humble......self deprecating......Now that's a cool guy....Charlie RIP
Charlie was always my favorite Stone. Soft spoken, does his job and a Great Drummer.
Don Clark I feel the exact same as well with Timothy b schmit and Charlie Watts
And humble
But, let's face it, he looks here like a sex pervert just home from church.
Was?
He's really not a "great" drummer he's good that's the best you could say.
Great to see this! His wonderful attire and manner! He collects antique firearms. A most humble man. Here's to you, Charlie!
Charlie Watts: Great drummer...cool and modest guy...impeccable dresser...
Charlie and Keith are the heart of the Stones. His drumming is outstanding along with Keith's guitar licks. Steve McQueen cool.
This is the first time ive heard his voice. Looking forward to hearing more of his music.
The fact that most never notice his playing is because he plays the songs and never gets in the way, making him the best kind of drummer. Ringo is the same. no big fancy drum kit, just the basics. If you're good enough thats all you need
what a nice guy, so humble in his position ! respex
When you ask him "yes or no" questions, Jonathan, you're going to get short answers.
Not knowing anything about the guy your interviewing.
Hear hear. 👍
One of Rock'n roll's gentlemen.
stunning suit
as always. the man is impeccable
A lovely man , kept solid time so the band could feel secure in doing their thing , greatly and sadly missed .

Excellent and of course entertaining interview with my favorite drummer who just happens to be the drummer in my favorite band!
Charlie is always so dapper.
A class act!
Normal guy love him .no vanity and very very honest .
He is still the best-loved stone of all and the greatest rock in the stones personna!
If I'm not mistaken, i think Charlie Watts was on the front cover of GQ magazine because of the suits he wears. Classy dresser.
The Greatest Drummer Ever 😢💔
what a gent
Man of few words ....love Charlie
QUELLE CLASSE ! QUELLE ÉLÉGANCE VESTIMENTAIRE ET DU COEUR !!

"I'm am actually not as straight as people think". This is as it should be. What a nice man.
Charlie Watts is for real. A true music lover and musician.

He said more recently that drugs destroyed him and he very nearly lost everything down to his addiction
Heroin always marks you, you can tell.
It was the 80's man.
Charlie Watts, Ringo Starr, Graham Edge 3 of the greatest rock and roll drummers ever and all 3 of them are still with us!!! how fortunate we are!
He looks like an East End gangster

There were once a rumor thet he should join the Sopranos ---
Mister Watts, Saville Row taylors, great. Wonderful blues and jazz drummer.

Charlie Watts, man of few words, but much playing. : )
charlie......you are more then good you are a blooday living legend!!!!...love you guy x
The crazy thing about this is that he agreed to a one to one interview:))
Although it's rare, he has agreed to them multiple times.
Nobody watched them or listened to them when he was alive for whatever reason
Jazz gives a drummer subtlety and technique, improves his touch..
The GLUE of the band.....
So true.
I love that guy
Great guy.
The very great Charlie Watts, The Rock behind the Wolling Stones
Charlie was window shopping at Bergdorff Goodman 5th ave $ 57th st when I ran into him in Nov 1981.I saw the stones in concert in New Jersey during that period.
outstanding!! Charlie is So versatile.,..
this is why Charlie plays drums in the background. poor guy always looks uncomfortable as hell in front of the camera except when he's playing.
Charlie is the first Rolling Stone I would like to meet. All of them are really great fellows, but Charlie just seems most humble and interesting,.
damn, he wrote a book on Charlie Parker in 1959/1960 & published in 64', amazing !
Now that’s a suit. Wow 🤩
A man comfortable in his own skin...nice!
Rocks Off, Charlie!
The funniest rock video I've ever seen is where they play' It's only rock and roll' in the tent full of bubbles!! Charlie is brilliant in it. If you've never watched it give it a go. Priceless.
Yo frankygib how the managed to sing it's only rocking roll but I like it ,it should have been called there's load of big bubbles 😂😂😂👅
I love Charlie Watts!
you are your music, potetical, subtle, endearing, lasting, powerful 🌟🌟🌟thank you 💚🌟💚🌟💚🌟💚🌟
Almost 30 years ago and this guy looks like 80 already. Amazing they seem to be immortal
Agree, he was 49- 50 here, and looks more than 80, 1991!
Nice to hear a world famous musician who is not pretentious, or a diva or an egomaniac. Ringo's like that as well, but Liverpudlian.
As A sessions Drummer I can relate to Charlie watts and respect for the privacy he likes.
The shell that Charlie Watts inhabited has gone but Charlie Watts has not gone
Awesome and what a drummer x
top man! he's so approachable!
Charlie Watts has special suits made to match the classic cars that he owns. Strangely enough, he doesn't drive. I guess when you're rich, they call that eccentric!!! LOL
Jim M cool anecdote thanks for sharing

A famous composer said Music is the space between the notes Charly Watts cleverly paused the hihat for each snare drum beat. Not easy but very effective.
Yes! I love Charlie Watts.
Thank you for posting this!!
yay for Charlie !! good stuff
At the end he laughs and says "I'm sorry" .. almost too self-effacing for a chat show but in a big brash band
He is who he is 👍🏻
Charlie's dressed timelessly, Ross looks lost in early 90s awful fashion
Not a hater nor a snarky guy never quite got the attraction of Ross. Always in a hurry, rarely lets an interview develop much.
Love Charlie, hate Jazz. He is a great, very loyal man to the band. Will always love & respect him 🙌🙌👍❤️

CW would 100% agree with what you write. As he has said many times 'he plays the drums for Keith and Mick'. CW is as loyal as can be to the band.
