I'm 18 year old logo designer and I have started my career by designing logos on contests. I've been doing that for 5 years but after understanding the process I feel obsessed to work directly with clients. I believe this series will change my life. Lots of love from India.

Ben and Matthew I was wondering what you would have done, when showing all the stylescapes, if they went in the complete opposite direction of what was discussed in the discovery session? How would you correct your clients in a positive way so that they don't lose their confidence in the process?
I keep coming back to this series and it's so refreshing everytime! There's a discovery session tomorrow and now i'm feeling truly ready for it. Thank you so much!

When the Hamiltons were having a hard time providing a visual language of their look and feel, Ben was quick to act on helping them out draw that by looking at several stylescapes you guys have done. The vulnerability, raw emotion and thought process of Ben and Matthew sort of gives us a comfortability level that it's not going to be perfect all the time but you can always be creative to deviate from the norm and go with the flow to get the destination. I can't wait for the next episode! this is so insightful! Thanks The Futur Team :)

In making the list of traits for "Who is your customer?" unless you have taken the time to collect data, this profile you are describing may be just a figment of your imagination. I KNOW who my customers ARE because I have collected data not because who I WANT them to BE. Then there is, "Who do you want your customer to be? Who are you targeting?" in which case you need to know the demographics of who typically buys your type of products or services. Again, you need to collect data not guess as to who will want to buy your product. This will then determine your pricing bracket and market positioning.

Hey guys! Awesome content love this new format and how it presents, amazing and proud to see you grow on UA-cam! Question: when you do the user profile with the client, do you counter check with reality-check what you've defined with the client with some kind of customer research/interviews or do you assume the client knows (or should know) and you just use what they say without additional research or counter checking that the personas defines are indeed right? - and if you do counter check, what's your process, do you handle it, ask the client to handle it, how etc? Thanks 🙌
All of this is grear, but as a management consultant what I do is I get actual data from their customer base:, ARPU, ACPU, churn rate, segmentation per product, NPS, CPA etc.. Thus us science not a chat with the owner. You get their CRM data, their google analytics data, social media followed data and build NBA models.

I understand it's great to know who the target customer is, but I don't understand why you can say "will Jessica like this product?" based on a mapped user profile. You can take a calculated guess, but you can't be sure. I feel the user personas idea underestimates the complexity of the human mind, but I guess I miss something?

I love the series and videos thus far! Keep up the great work and I look forward to watching the upcoming videos in the series to see how you guys are able to help the Hamilton Family Brewery achieve their goals.
Great episode! Here I see two people from the client being part of the discovery session. In bigger firms there likely would be around 6 to 10 people claiming for a seat at the table of such an important meeting. Whats your experience? How many people should be there at max?
MrBenBurns in my latest discovery sessions I‘ve also had great results with the lightning talk method which I borrowed from the Design Sprint approach. Combined with how-might-we-notes it was a quick way to extract the knowledge. It’s kind of a „stakeholder interview light“
Really like this series, but I have some concerns on how the personas were generated. Creating a persona from guesses and assumptions create lots of false negatives, and you end up emphasising and designing to what you think the user is instead of what the actual user is. Instead there should be field research in the current audience - i.e. watching the bar guests, and then interviewing them (i.e. give them a free drink in exchange for speaking to them) to build a more realistic persona that will then build a catalog of much more accurate information.
@@thefutur it's often a common mistake that clients know their users to a T, because as humans we take things as face value. Also as humans, we tend to have a lot of bias- the key personas we see may be the ones we look out for not necessarily the common. I.e. look back at the footage from their bar, how many looked like soccer moms? Usually the best way is to take 3 areas of user research into account 1. What the client knows about the user (which you've done) 2. Shadowing/observing users 3. Interviewing users That way you can validate any incorrect assumptions and create a more authentic persona. It also helps to then test back these designs against them, to see what resonates (again rather than what we individually like, because we aren't always our users).
I hope this series goes on forever and does other companies after Hamilton. So much great information and so fun to watch!
Same :)

it's really nice you people share this. I'm a illustrator and designer from Argentina and here it's really difficult that someone shows you the ways and strategies to make contact whit your real clients not that ideal person that has no feelings or interest on your work
Haha, now I want to know what brewery he had that horrible experience at because I had the exact same one.
NOOOO
Lol we can't put them on blast like that
Great show! Love the beard plucking action going on at 22:00.
Very clear opinions and process. Thanks. I think this video season help me lots🤩
the content is really good but the audio is too inconsistent; some highs and then sudden lows all through out the production. I hope that you guys can fix it. cheers!
I love the series and videos thus far! Keep up the great work and I look forward to watching the upcoming videos in the series to see how you guys are able to help the Hamilton Family Brewery achieve their goals.
fingers crossed!
Very cool series, good job! And the clients are awesome, its a win-win!
Mabuhay! Guys!
cheers guys, really enjoying the process
cant wait for the next episode !
Cheers!
Great episode! Here I see two people from the client being part of the discovery session. In bigger firms there likely would be around 6 to 10 people claiming for a seat at the table of such an important meeting. Whats your experience? How many people should be there at max?
We've also done stakeholder interviews. There's the main team associated with the project, and all the people who need to weigh in.
MrBenBurns in my latest discovery sessions I‘ve also had great results with the lightning talk method which I borrowed from the Design Sprint approach. Combined with how-might-we-notes it was a quick way to extract the knowledge. It’s kind of a „stakeholder interview light“
I love the more documentary format for this series! Having the voice-over explanation helped this non-designer understand what was going on, and why.
Excellent, thank you!
you guys are good very detailed and professional good brainstorming
Really like this series, but I have some concerns on how the personas were generated. Creating a persona from guesses and assumptions create lots of false negatives, and you end up emphasising and designing to what you think the user is instead of what the actual user is. Instead there should be field research in the current audience - i.e. watching the bar guests, and then interviewing them (i.e. give them a free drink in exchange for speaking to them) to build a more realistic persona that will then build a catalog of much more accurate information.
What makes you think it’s false guesses? We build them with the client who knows their customers best.
Usually the best way is to take 3 areas of user research into account
1. What the client knows about the user (which you've done)
2. Shadowing/observing users
3. Interviewing users
That way you can validate any incorrect assumptions and create a more authentic persona. It also helps to then test back these designs against them, to see what resonates (again rather than what we individually like, because we aren't always our users).
Cant wait for ep 3!!!!!
