Wow! I didn't watched that video before, really interesting and amazing how it explains the way GoW ties to the nord mythology and it was amazing to watch it with you too. Keep going Kali!
I watched this guys videos years ago and its really compelling whatbhe talks about for these game characters. Even the one with Link from legend of zelda was good too.
This was so cool! I feel this was the perfect missing piece to our pursuit of fully understanding and appreciating the magnificence of these games. Like you, most of my education in Greek/Norse mythology was just in passing through various forms of media, and then especially when playing the GoW games. And I always thought that the stories of these games were just "loosely based" on the Mythos. But what watching this made me realize is that they're in fact a butterfly-effect reimagining of "what if?" with Loki's place in the timeline shifted, and Kratos added. With the blank spaces now in that canvas, the Santa Monica team was able to tell their own version of the story, in such a way that created that beautiful character development arc we got to see of Kratos through both 2018 and Ragnarok. And doing it so flawlessly that it never felt forced, and blended seamlessly into the greater narrative. Absolute genius. I have so many new thoughts now, and an even deeper appreciation of this series. Gonna be thinking this over more for a while. Thank you for the reaction!
Yes! I'm so glad this video was recommended. I was not expecting a full blown mythology video before watching but was so pleasantly surprised when it started to get into it! I also have soooo many thoughts and an even deeper understanding/admiration for this entire series * chefs kiss *
One of my favorite things about Ragnarok is how Kratos and Atreus transformations are challenged. The Ragnarok prophecy brings about all 3 themes again, it starts to break Kratos' and Atreus' relationship, it sets in motion an ending of a child killing their parent with the prophecy and also invokes the theme of control, where both Atreus and Kratos are trying to avoid and control where the prophecy is gonna go, which only makes it come true even more, with Atreus going to learn under Odin and Kratos once again killing a god in Heimdall. In a lot of fiction about transformation and change, after a simple story arc and character development piece, the characters are forever changed and everything is good now. But Ragnarok invokes something that is really human, that is when we try to change ourselves, dedicate a long time and effort to do it, we 100% find a better place, but we still fall back on our old ways, the same way Kratos and Atreus fall back in their old ways when they are split apart. That's why "the promise" needs to be made, for them to listen to each other's voices, even when they are not around. Ragnarok didn't forget the lessons from 2018, it challenged them, and made their characters fail, but because of the lessons in 2018, they were able to turn those challenges around and come back to the fitting end. I think Týr's lines in Valhalla makes this so much clear. "Goodness is not a destination we arrive at, but a practice" "This time, you have better voices in your head" I also love how the chaotic figure of Loki / Atreus continues to bring change in everyone in Ragnarok. But not only Loki, this time Kratos himself is able to change others, because he learned from Atreus and 2018. Kratos helps Freya change, who in sequence helps mend the relationship between Freya and Freyr. Kratos helps Brok deal with his missing "soul bits" right away. Kratos even helps Thor, in his last moments, to accept the possibility of change. While Atreus helps Angrboda challenge her fate. Atreus helps Thrúd see Odin's real nature and gives her strength to go after her goal of becoming a Valkyrie. But at the same time, Atreus and Kratos bring about a horrible change, in Sindri. Obviously not their faulty entirely, but their presence is always changing everything in the norse realms.
Awesome to see you reacting to the untangling God of War video. If you want more God of War content to react to may I suggest the God of War: Ascension From Ashes Super Bowl 2013 Commercial if you haven't seen it yet. It's really an underrated and cool live action commercial.
It's insane that the best selling and the most critically acclaimed Norse Mythology based game stars Loki and his father Farbauti. I wonder if thousands year from now, people will think the events of the game is what happened in the actual mythology.
I’m glad this story confirmed my knowledge of mistletoe, I know I posted it in one of your videos but I couldn’t remember the source On a side note, have you considered reacting to the GOWR symphony where they play the ending credit song “Blood Upon The Snow” at the gaming awards show?
Ohhh My God I am sooo Happpy Kali, Thank you for uploading this I was so waiting for this. Btw one more thing, In Norse Mythos Father of Loki is not very thoroughly detailed, his name is Farabuti which basically means Cruel Striker, and Kratos is not far from it. Its insane how perfectly the writers made Kratos' fit in Norse realms
I had sooo much trouble finding more info about Farabuti and honestly this makes Kratos even more plausible as the father. Especially when you say it means Cruel Striker hmmmm 🤔👀🔥
We know the delivery of the lore was compelling. But what really brought it together was everyone involved really got along, and are all incredibly talented, with a résumé that suggests working on a video game would be beneath them. But I'm glad they signed up, for many games have been losing class. See _"Danielle Bisutti Breaks Down Freya's Most ICONIC MOMENTS Creating God of War: Ragnarök [SPOILERS]"._
I love the story kratos and atreus 🎉❤ I'm so freacking happy 🎉🎉🎉 Thank you, Kaliwali I'm happy for this god of war was amazing adventure, boss fight very brutal and emotional 😭❤️
I believe there was a slight retcon in Ragnarok, concerning Tyr and his bitten off arm. I think it was said in some hidden dialogue that Garm had bitten off Tyrs arm at some point, hence why Garm was chained up in Hel, and that Tyr used Egyptian magic to grow his arm back, you can see his arm has Hieroglyphics on it, in Ragnarok
Yes I actually remember this being explained just like that in the game during the Valhalla DLC or maybe towards the ending of Ragnarok. I can't remember exactly which lol But yes, true!
This video had me goosebumps for sure and we know what happened in GOW: Ragnarok... Or wasn't? For gow fans still hope for new Gow...and some fans wondering where the story goes after Loki and Kratos separate... Could it be only Loki to turn human to full God? Kratos done be a god change to full human kindness.😵💫🧐
I think my favorite adaptive change to a mythology in the God of War franchise before God of War 2018 and Ragnarök was how they handled the Medusa and Perseus story by adding Kratos to the myth. Medusa wasn't always a Gorgon; she was a beautiful woman who had amazing hair. So much so that Poseidon fell in lust with her and (how can I say this gently) "attacked" her. Although I believe some interpretations say that it was a bit more consensual. But the deed happened in a temple for Athena. This angered Athena and so she cursed Medusa by changing her to a Gorgon and her hair to snakes whose gaze turned people to stone. In the myth it would be Perseus, who was a demigod son of Zeus. Perseus went to kill Medusa and use her head to save his mother. He also used it to save the woman that would eventually become his wife. However, in the games Kratos kills Medusa while she was attacking Athens with Ares. Of course, it would make sense that Medusa would want to help destroy Athens as it was Athena who turned her into the monster she had become. So, it would make sense for her to want to get revenge on Athena. Since it was Kratos that killed Medusa, this prevents Perseus from getting Medusa's head and therefore he can't save the woman that ends up becoming his wife. So, Perseus will have to do something in order to change her fate. Kratos is also betrayed and murdered by Zeus, meaning that he must change his fate as well. How can they both do that? They seek out the Sisters of Fate to go back in time to change what happened to them, and Kratos and Perseus end up crossing paths on their journeys. And of course we all know what happened next Kratos ends up killing Perseus for getting in his way.
Yes Santa Monica did a great job with the story but they didnt come up with Atreus being Loki until late in development, by their own admission. Meaning they never wrote Loki into the story cus they hadnt a need for him until the 2nd game. Id recommend reacting to the writers of Ragnarok spoiler interview, alot of interesting tidbits in there…like what the original plot of ragnarok was etc
Even Greek and Roman myths which are more fleshed out have multiple different versions, where even people back then debated over which one was true. We have text of Ancient Greeks arguing over how the Battle of Troy went down. Back then people lived in City-States, so it's safe to assume, every City would have a slightly different version of the myths and the further you got from the origin and the more cross culture interactions would change it even further. Myths are meant to be explanations of the world around us and to explain how things are in the world through metaphor and allegory. Anyone who complains about them being changed or updated, are just being to dishonest. These stories had been changed and added to for centuries before it was ever written down to become the "Canon" we know today
You might not actually have to buy a PS3 to play Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta. Those two games were originally PSP games and seeing as Sony has been releasing PSP games on the PS4/5 for the last year they might bring them on PS4/5. I do have a great God of War video recommendation. "God of War was always deep you cowards!"by Endless Jess. He goes on to talk about the great characterization of Kratos in those older games.
