you are such a underrated rider, you're style is one of a kind and I'm a very big fan. Big ups for the bike as well :)
Excellent bike & component check, it’s so helpful to hear your why’s and not just hip products endorsement.
Very cool to see you do your own thing, looks like a dream machine!
I appreciate the fact that you not only went into what you ride but why also.
Another absolutely top notch Vid.
I'm so glad you were born! Keep rockin it! So much inspiration.

Similar to my build, but a long'ish custom steel frame, w/ higher bb, shorter seat tube and chain stays, the lighter Reba 32 100 fork. Also use a tensioner to run two cogs, but can switch with no tools. Front suspension is so much easier on the joints.
That exact same thing happened to my old p3 dropouts. Luckily Specialized was able to send me a fresh frame so I sold the bike
A very interesting Bike 💯💯
Super cool! LOVE your riding, come from a similar background of trials/bmx, even was in a circus (not for biking tho). I'm looking to build something VERY similar so this helped me SO much. Thanks a lot for the video and insights into what has worked and what hasn't.
I've just come across this video after building up the same kind of bike! I come from a trials background and decided to build up a DJ / Street trials kind of do it all bike as something new to do during lockdown here in the UK. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
That is very cool bike!
I also installed two gear system on my Inspired Hex. It is a very comfortable riding in any situation!
Thanks for this James, I'm building up an older KHS DJ50 for the same purposes. Greetings from Vancouver Island!
DJ bike is awesome bought one in 2020 not built for speed but fun.
I'm so curious of how it rides. It looks sooo goood!! If I ever find a decently priced ticked, I think I'll try it out. Cheers James!
A very interesting build. Thanks for posting, that’s really useful. For a DJ frame with less BB drop I think The Rise Party Master would work well.
I considered that frame! Great Geo, my hub wouldn’t work though.
Ah that’s a shame. Though I bet the folks at The Rise could get you in contact with the frame builder for a custom spaced backend to suit your i9 hub. Love your build anyways… very unique and interesting.
Really cool vid!
I was inspired by this to make my own ultimate street frankenbike and I want to ask you: how did you manage to make a custom cassette or what was the technique to fit those 2 different cogs on the rear wheel?
Just single cogs and spacers. The cogs are a surly 22t and a Chris king 12t. Spacers you can get from any bike shop.
Nice bike! Do you have to readjust the rear brake when moving the rear wheel back in the horizontal dropouts?
Nope! It moves in line with the brake so there is minimal difference to the brake pad position.
Big fan of the double single speed.
Have you considered a frame like the ns capital? Higher bb, shorter stays.
The geometry looks perfect! I’m not into the 14mm dropouts or the brake mounts though. Would be hard to put a good brake or a trials gear on it.
@@jamesbtrials Didn't see the bigger dropouts, just knew ns made bikes like that.
James - you ever have any back hub movement in the horizontal dropouts when doing wild trials stuff? Moving forward or backward. It looks like you have some chain tug things on there but they only pull one way usually. Just curious.
Yeah some. I greased the axle recently and torqued it to spec and no movement since then.
Couldn't the bike you want be the Hex Inspired frame with the Pike fork? It would be a little shorter but at the beginning you said that you don't care about the "whellbase" ..... and it would be the only one to have the shorter rear stays and the higher bottom bracket. Obviously the steering angle is more vertical.
I have a hex, it rides a lot different. I think it’s a combination of a few things. Bb height, head angle, and reach. With the pike fork the bb would be maybe +30? I think I’d loose a little too much stability. Unfortunately I can’t try it out because the one I have isn’t a tapered head tube. The new hexes look sick! I’d ride one for more trials and less tricks.
Is the spank rear rim 35 the same as 350 ? In europe I can`t seem to find the 35 model :) Also as a side question as I`m thinking to do a similar build, for that chain tensioner, do you need a derailleur hanger from the frame in order to attach it when you want to switch to the smaller back cog? Thanks so much and keep up the amazing vids man !
Spank doesn’t make the rim anymore. Might have replaced it with the 350. Not sure. For the tensioner, yes, it required a hanger.
@@jamesbtrials Thanks so much for the reply dude ! I think I`ll copy your setup as it`s best of both worlds ! Luckily I have a Ns Zircus frame and it has a hangar , I just have to build a backwheel from scratch ! If I may, what would be a more buget friendly alternative to that Hydra Hub ? Would a Hope 4 do the job ? Killer stuff man and thank you again for your time ! Vick.
@@VickGaza I rode the hope for many years, and it is still going on my brothers bike! Great hub.
@@jamesbtrials thank you!
I watched your 2016 bike check with the magnet and on off switch, is that the same Chromag seat on this bike?
It is! Wow I forgot how old that seat is.
@@jamesbtrials its a tough seat :-)
@@jamesbtrials 2023 watched this for reference, wow my DJ bike is 3 yrs old now.
Hi man! Great riding! What did your bike work out in weight?
Thanks! I’m not sure how much it weighs. I always forget to weigh it! The quality of the parts is more important to me.
@@jamesbtrials would be cool to get an idea of what is capable on a jump bike.
I ride pure trials and dirt jumping. I am also looking to building up a play bike.
I know weight does effect a trials rider and jump bike are not light at all.
I just weighed it! 12.3kg or 27 pounds.
@@jamesbtrials wow that is not bad at all! Thanks James! Appreciate it
Get a fat bike James!
Are you still on the original chain?!?
I change it once a year.
@@jamesbtrials Did you ever weigh the bike?
@@AlexSalikan Just did, using an old scale so I'm not sure if it's accurate, 26-27 pounds.
28 cr/22 sprkt
Crap I just bought a 2021 P3 to ride trials, I hope they have made some improvements since you owned one otherwise I am #*@%^!!!
You can have a lot of fun on that bike, mine lasted a few years. Just keep the bolts on the rear end tight.
