Mullet Wheels For Street Trials?

  • Mullet bikes are catching ground in the MTB world so I thought I'd see if there's any advantages doing it with a trials bike too.
I was actually pretty surprised with the results!
One of my Patreon viewers asked why even stick with a 26" front, what are the advantages?
I guess you still get a bit of help with kickers but I think one of the main advantages of keeping a bigger wheel is having a bit more leeway in gaps to front. You have a larger area to aim for so you can be slightly less accurate than with smaller wheels. You also get the bonus of a larger tyre contact patch more more grip and ability to roll faster over rough ground.
I think I'd like to try a 24" on the front to see if it will act like a slightly larger Fourplay but like I say in the video I'm open to your suggestions too.

Next time try a 24" frame for the shorter chainstays and use your 26" fork and wheel just a thought I feel that way you actually can fully utilize the advantages of both in one

As many have mentioned one of the key barriers to entry for street trials is the steep cost of the bikes (very understandable given the supply and demand factor and the parts involved). It would be real cool to see a street ride from you on a modern BMX (maybe with two brakes and an easier gear ratio) to see what works and how it compares for your riding!

Nice vid, Ali. Keep mixing it up! The first time I saw trials riders in the flesh back in the early 90s, one of them was riding an Ibis donkey bike (or mule more appropriately) with the 26 front and 24 rear. I thought they (the trials riders) were crazy. Cheers!

I think a major part of the spin is the weight. You should put a heavier 26 inch alloy wheel on the front and your usual lighter carbon wheel on the rear or vice versa to see how weight of different wheels affects spins

Mullet bikes have been a thing since the dark ages. Ibis trials comp, 20" rear, 24" front. They also tried 24"/26" like you have here. The late 90's and early 2000's was a popular era for 24" wheels on DH bikes too, in a variety of configurations.

Hi Ali, how are you? Amazing to see you leap those gaps! Not a trails rider, so it's magic to me, or just pure talent. Two thoughts: it looks like you're smashing your chain ring pretty hard and often- do you use a bash guard?
The other thought is about the malaise you've shared with us- I recall a TED talk, I think it was, about how little sunlight Scotland gets in the winter, and wondered if you've ever heard of mild sun booth (tanning booth) use to provide just enough uv light to offset that? Generally, they're not recommended, but I've wondered about it at a low setting.
    Cheers and Happy New Year!

since im very smart we should add the 26 inch and 24 inch together and divide by the number of wheels which is 2 so 26+24=50
so 50 divided by 2 will equal 25 inches so the bike should ride like a 25 inch .....
    wait what??

@@Ali_Clarkson I remember that! Their mods used to run 20" front and 19" rear too didn't they? Is this still the case for mods Ali? Haven't ridden much since DJ was killed so I'm unfamiliar with the scene. Trails and bike parks for me nowadays!

Clearly the optimal mullet will be a 16" on the rear and a 32" fat on the front... wait isn't it a penny farthing at that point?!
