    Thanks so much for making this video! I'm in my 50's and started trying to learn trials on my full squish bike about a year ago. I haven't made nearly the progress you have, but I'm so encouraged seeing what you've been able to accomplish.

      Right on! I just got a used trials bike as well. I was starting to find that I was having more joy just playing around in parking lots trying to do silly little "micro-trials" moves on curbs than out trail riding. It helps me feel like a kid again. If you manage to figure out some good ways for us old dogs to learn some trials skills I hope you can put them out on video.

    This is simply THE best video I have watched on this subject. THANK YOU! I have been mountain biking for over 30 years but trials is the most impressive discipline to me and I litterally dreamed of being able to do it. Only now in my mid 40's I am able to pull super long wheelies, short fakies, 180's etc.
    I have been able to do back wheel hops for about 2 years, but i can only do about 4 hops. Now I know why, it has to do with the crank moving up a little with each hop.
    Now I will be trying to unlock my brain to unlock the rear wheel haha

    I guess there is at least one more way to get to back wheel without proper pedal kick (and most likely that's the one I use now). You do an endo-pull and jump, but in the mid-air you pedal a bit so you land with kinda right feet position.
    Looks like now I can get to rear wheel and jump a bit, but it's still scary to lean back much and do a kick. 8-(

      @@todd_on_bikes Partially (or "partly"?) because of your video, partially because of SuperRider's now I can lift the front wheel up and jump a few (sometimes 5+) times on it. But looks like now I have the same problem as you did - I lean too much forward when trying to pedal kick. On video looks like I stand almost vertical. And I even manage (sometimes) to jump... for 5-10 cm. But it is really hard.
      So thanks for helping me.

    This was a fantastic video Todd - thank you for making it! I will readily admit that I'm stuck on step two (lack of practice of course...), but I'm going to go back to step one to practice repositioning the pedals due the natural 'roll-back'.

    • @todd_on_bikes
      @todd_on_bikes  2 роки тому

      Thank you very much for the kind words. Good luck on progressing to step 3. It took me a couple months and may hours of practice to move from step 2 to step 3. You’ll get there! Figuring out the pedal position will definitely help. 👍🏼 Thanks, again, about the gap. At the time, that was my longest gap and (as the text in the screen indicates) it going me 277 attempts to finally land it! Trials is great b/c, at whatever stage you’re at, when you put in time and effort you can see little measurable gains, and then you can just keep building on them! Good luck! 👍🏼

    Older bearded to older bearded... we made a vital health choice to start trial! One can never be to old to start but could become too old by whining away from discovering fun, self-discipline and self-control on as many different activities as possible!
    I could get on the back wheel easily and reach my half minute hopping after 12 hours of training on a trial bike.
    Hopping backward came very fast, as you mention, as it just needs simple leg flexion then extension.
    Short distance sideway hops came under funny almost controled appearence after 20 to 25 hours.
    Forward hops... ouch! I couldn't do more than a few centimeters until more than 60 hours of practice. Realeasing brakes and synchronizing pedaling with precompressing the tire and with pulling the handlebar was a difficult ability to get. I practiced alone here in Quebec (Canada). I had to watch many tutorial videos like those of Ali C because the scare of falling on my back (also due to past experience... with tools in my waist-pack... and bruises along vertebra) caused a blokage from trying to release that monstrous back brake!
    Thanks for your nice, simple, and right to the points video!

    • @todd_on_bikes
      @todd_on_bikes  Рік тому

      Thanks! Good luck with your progression! Unlocking at back brake unlocks a world of possibilities, but looping can certainly happen sometimes. 😬

    • @danyarchambault7121
      @danyarchambault7121 11 місяців тому

      My biggest mistakes on my last month (3 month ago because I broke a part I can't find. I do a bit of hand machining here and there now and then to make my own at a very slow pace) was to try to forward up to higher obstacle while starting the hop to close by that higher obstacle so bumpimg back the back wheel every time. I need to get confident on being able to reach the obstacles end start from as far back as I can to allow a curb up and forward to actually get high enough before being at the horizontal displacement required to touch the top of the obstacle! So for now I'm far from overjumping to flip on my back... instead the wheel bump almost make me flip forward to land on my face!!!! We look all funny until we get the proper sequences for each tricks!

My goal isn’t to become a trials rider per se, but to add trials skills to my MTB experience on the trails. I am learning on a diet jumper and would prefer not to invest in a trials bike. Do you think I can get the hop/gapping down with a dirt jumper or does this make it too hard to learn?

    Great stuff Todd! So inspiring. I'm 48 year old family man.. trying to learn trials on my Santa Cruz Chameleon Mullet ( 29" front, 27.5" back tire). Thinking of getting a 24" inspired flow to progress a little faster. I am 5'11" and trying back wheel hops on the rather tall Chameleon is challenging. I think it's more of the rider's limited abilities than the bike, but wanted to check with you if going to the Inspired flow will help. I practice about 30-60 min 4-5 days a week.. focusing on trackstands, hops , rocks, huffing and puffing away 😆 Noticed that you also have a competition trials bike. Any advice for about my thoughts on getting the Inspired flow 24" would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

      Hi, there! Thanks for the comment. Yes, I think that it would definitely be easier to learn trials on a Flow over a Chameleon. I ride a Chameleon as well. It can be back hopped, but its definitely easier on a trials bike. Focusing on track stands is a great idea! Also, I think that two wheel hops up stairs can real help learn balance at the beginning of a trials journey. Good luck!

    Hi Todd, thanks for inspiring us, i am begineer to on this sport and have problem to back hop the obstacles, still try and trying :) i have questions, may i know what psi you use on your tyres. Thanks bro!

      Hi, Fazry! I ride at 40 psi, which was recommended to me by other trials riders when they saw one of my Instagram clips with where I had really low psi and some guys thought I might damage my rims. Good luck as you start learning trials! Have a lot of fun with it! 👍🏼

    Don't you have pads and ride bike parks? I couldn't imagine falling backwards on concrete without wearing a spine/tailbone protector

    What size wheel are you riding? 24" or 26"

    Thank you so much, this is the most info I seen so far on hopping. I am a little afraid at the moment because I looped out and hurt my back and arm, I'm 58 yrs old and just about gave up. You inspired me to try again, wish me luck! lol

    • @todd_on_bikes
      @todd_on_bikes  2 роки тому

      Good luck, man! Take it slow! I was very scared of looping out and did it hard a couple times early on. I back hopped for several months without letting my back brake go. No need to rush it. Take it at whatever pace is comfortable for you. As you start to figure out the brake timing it will start to make a lot more sense and progress will speed up. Have a quick back brake hand it key to avoiding the loop out! Good luck!

    I believe it's really hard to learn this stuff when you're not a teenager anymore. At my 34 I can jump on back wheel... literally couple of time and then I fall. Feels to my I loose my momentum somewhere. Like the Earth pulls me much more standing on back wheel then standing on feet.

      Keep with it! You can do it. But it takes a lot of practice!!

    I am in me mid 30's. Am I too old to learning tricks on the bike? Would I be able to learn on a MTB?

    • @todd_on_bikes
      @todd_on_bikes  8 місяців тому +2

      I learned this at age 44 and I can do it on MTB as well. So I am confident you can learn similar stuff on MTB if you put in the time and effort. Good luck! 👍🏼

      @@todd_on_bikes Thank you for the adviced you have given. I've always wanted to get into it but never had the confidence or a trials bike. Just wanted to learn we what I have got and slowly progress.

    When the guy said that one can use manual to get on to the bench it became obvious that he has some serious background for a beginner )

    • @todd_on_bikes

      Even 3 years after filming this video, I still can’t manual. At this point, I could manual about 2 feet max. Just roll in, pop that tire up, and the bench catches you. That’s all the manual skills you need for this. 👍🏼

    Im getting better at back hops and staying in place, but I'm always so scared to push on the pedal to move forward cos I'll always fall back.

    • @todd_on_bikes
      @todd_on_bikes  3 роки тому +1

      No worries. Take your time! I was hopping in place and not kicking the pedal for months for the exact same reason. Eventually, you'll get more comfortable and you can work in the pedal kick. You got it!
