Hola Caffeiños! This week we got ALL the healthcare in Mexico - mostly for David. We visited an optometrist, dentist, xray shop and then another optometrist. We shared the cost breakdown of each visit (all without insurance) so you can have an idea of what to expect if you're looking to get healthcare in Mexico. I’ve worn contacts most of life. Recently, I had Lasik done by one of the Top Lasik surgeon’s in the world, Dr, Chayet at Codet Vision in Tijuana, MX. Wish I had done it sooner. My eyes are now 20/15. Price was $2000 total for both eyes, not each, like in the U.S. I’ve never been to such a modern eye clinic in my life, the tests, were very complete, I did maybe 15 tests in total to make sure my eyes would be ok. The staff all spoke English, and Dr. Chayet performs the surgery himself, not a student or someone else, like in the US. So great to wake up and be able to see! . No more contacts, no more solutions, no more itchy eyes.

I think you guys are officially my favorite expats in merida!! This was the perfect video for me today because yesterday my sister asked me to find out how much dentist costs in mexico because she got a $15,000 quote fit the work she needs done. This was super helpful.
My husband and I are coming down for a few months in 2021... Eventually will be relocating to mexico.

If you go to Tijuana, I can recommend Dr. Dalia. Her husband is American and runs the office. Its 5 minutes from the border at San Ysidro/San Diego. I was quoted about $21,000 in the US, Dr. Dalia’s quote for all my dental work was about $4500. Web. Doctordalia d o t c o m

The medical issue is huge for Canadians and Americans. Here in Canada we are so hooked on our state health monopoly that people are terrified of leaving that bubble which is why so many Canadians refuse to move even though our medical system here is completely over loaded and can’t cope. We have waiting lists of up to 2 years for joint replacement surgery, a very routine procedure. Many people don’t realize it but Mexican healthcare is better in many respects.

I have an easy technique for contacts that eye doctors don’t typically teach:
To put them in- Pull down your bottom lid, and put the contact directly under your pupil in the white area. Close your eye. The contact will slide up into place, and it’s a lot less scary!
To take them out- drag the contact down below your pupil. The contact will wrinkle a bit in the middle, and make it super easy to take out!

@@TravelWTravis Make sure to add a drop of contact friendly eyedrops when you do that to avoid creating small tears in your contacts.
I've had 4 implants done in Costa Rica and a bridge in Mexico and the cost savings versus the US paid for an entire 3 week vacation. Everyone I went to was 1st World clean, modern, knowledgeable and professional, and the PACE of the visit was much slower, with more contact and conversation than I'd ever had in US. Now in Cancun looking at heart valve surgery in 10 days and everything I've seen and experienced gives me 100% confidence all will be fine. You have to EXPERIENCE the difference, and savings, for yourself, but one of the drivers for low cost is they don't have malpractice law like we do or major insurance companies regulating medical procedures.
I love this! I want to move to Mexico!
I had amazing care in SMA when I got a facelift! Private suite, nearly private nurses, doctor cam to house. All arranged from us. Dentist next.
Great video, guys! I was very impressed with the very modern looking machinery in the dental and optical offices -- and the super value of it all. It just shows how hosed we are in the USA with insanely high costs. For my family of 4 I just renewed my medical insurance for $2400 a month! It is insane. I am enjoying your videos and you seem to be very happy with your life in Merida.
The part of "cheap" was well explained. It's kinda uncomfortable and upsetting when people come here and say "this is so cheap" as if everybody could afford that easily when we hardly make enough for a living in this country.
My right eye has been blind since childhood. AMblyopia. I had muscle operation on the cocked right eye, and it worked. from age 19 to my present 79.
The prices are unbelievable. Braces are life changing for sure. Very exciting ☺️

I really enjoyed the video. Today I went to the dentist here in Portugal and had two cavities filled, paying 70 euros (35 euros per cavity). The dentist and I were chatting about how a lot of younger dentists are doing courses to be able to do orthodontics work instead of implantology. You are an example of the popularity of braces, at almost any age. We used to just see teenagers with them but now it is quite common to see people even in their fifties. The thing about braces is that you have to keep going back for quite a while and that is money coming in every month. I think implants cater to a much more restricted clientele, usually older and people with a lot of money and also time since it takes about six months after pulling a tooth to put the crown on the screw inserted into the bone. Not many people want to wait so long.

Ohhhh and by the way, on FB there is the "Street food of India" here in Merida that posts that they take orders every Wednesday and it's "ALL Vegan". Just an FYI. Thank you so much! I was considering getting everything (dental, doctors visits) done before I left, but it seems advantageous to wait until I get down there.
Depends on your situation obviously - if you have specific medical needs that your docs are already treating, probably best to google expats experience with that in Mexico. But for simple stuff like braces, checkups, etc, we've found the care to be great here!
Clínica are all over the place and different prices some next to chemistries and they are fully qualified and dentist the same
I just finished paying my braces (a 2 year commitment), which were almost $6,000. I have several oral issues and looked into getting everything done in Mexico; however the braces were not an option as I have to go in every 6 weeks to get them adjusted. They will be taken off after summer of 2021, then I will continue my treatment in Mexico... I need implants, crowns, etc.

I got strep throat when I was there and found the pharmacists are much more empowered there to diagnose and prescribe!
Yeeeees! I (Travis) went with my allergies and they loaded me up with goodies!
On my list the moment I get to Merida, dentist. I lost a molar at the beginning of this year because my dentist was incompetent. To get it replaced, $5,000 USD minimum, that's the average in the ATL. If you want just a simple exam with x-rays, $99, but that's the intro price, and it's before the sell you a "plan." Glasses? Another big buck expense..... 🙄
As for getting contacts I don't think I would be able to deal with them. I am lucky not to need glasses at my age of 75 but if I needed them, I definitely would stick with glasses and not contacts. There is just too much work involved and I would probably lose them just as I have lost countless sunglasses, by leaving them in shops while travelling or who knows where.
I have a Humana Advantage Plan that I've been told covers me worldwide.
I've heard that in the Philippines hospitals won't even treat you without cash up front.
How does it work in Mexico?
We didn’t have any insurance and just paid for all the services directly. There is medical insurance available, so we might look into that as well!

Haha he has them on his bottom teeth now - it took a couple visits to finish the molds and get them on. In the next few weeks he'll have the top set on as well!
