What to Pack When You're Moving to Mexico!
In this video, we go over everything we brought when we moved to Merida, Mexico, everything we didn't bring, and everything we wish we brought. We opted for a furnished rental, so obviously this packing list will vary depending on what you're looking for, how long you're looking to stay and your family's circumstance. Hey! Guys, if you get a temporary or permanent visa you get to ship a box of personal items although must be itemized you get one duty-free pass for customs Note: items must be six months or older. ***Check with immigration for any changes.
Like you, we brought only 4 suitcases. I put my good chef knives and fav frying pan in my suitcase. Except for my fav lipstick, I can get anything we need in Mexico.
Riiight? We have heard if we were cooks, we would have brought a knife. But that would be true wherever we went.
My family and I travel so we have come and go all over but I will talk about our US - Mexico forays. Ist time we moved to Vallarta, brought our car and pulled a trailer behind. We documented everything per instructions from the Mexican Consulate and drove across. Tijuana has never been a problem but Sonoita is an entirely different thing, suffice it to say that I lost my sewing machine and a knitting machine!.... Years later we decided to bring commercial kitchen equipment (family of chefs here) along with all our household stuff, we got a U-Haul and drove to the border where our Custom's Broker was waiting, we had to be present for the inspection (it took a while and they went through everything), once cleared we had contacted a national moving company who was supposed to take 10 days but actually took over 2 months and by that time we realized YOU DON'T NEED ALL THAT S**T! Second time we moved to Merida, Santiago area. The third time I told my husband "I am taking my suitcase and locking the door!" and we did travel for years out of a suitcase and using Airbnb and the like. So far we've been in CDMX (the weather is amazing!!! not like Merida) during the pandemic but are now making plans to move to Puebla (Angelopolis area between Puebla and Atlixco) we know the area and really love it, the views are amazing!... Anyhoo, now we have mattresses, kitchen stuff since we cook, etc. but depending on the house we decide on (the offer is great, low price, detached homes with roof terraces, modern) might get some furniture, we'll see....We know there's little not available in Mexico anymore, 25 years ago you needed to bring lots of toothpaste and all else! But it's changed and now living out of a suitcase is a snap. I always preferred European brands and they have always been in Mexico, as a matter of fact I had to replace my laptop last week and I do plan on visiting my daughter in the US so I could get it there BUT I found a really great one at only $74.00 more than in the US, I'm waiting for delivery on Wednesday. Oh by the way, Merida is getting warmer but nothing near to what it has been in the past (reason why we didn't return to Merida) but summers are really HOT! Won't get cooler until Oct-Nov..... You might consider spending summer in CDMX, Puebla, Oaxaca, some parts of Chiapas or the North, If you've never been down the Baja Peninsula, it's an amazing road and vistas are incredible!

Be sure to check out "LA PROSPE DEL XTUP" a local's Yucatecan Restaurant that is true and different from all others, try one of their Sampler Platters and if it's in season have their Naranja Agria Agua YUM! Take care and enjoy Merida!
And the first "winter" here, I didn't wear any warm-weather clothing... BUT by the second winter, I actually DID get cold! And was glad for my hoodie and such! Also, my son frequently wore his long-sleeves this winter.
But NOT the first winter... we had to acclimate first.

My best tip is fly Southwest. You get 2 bags free a carry on and personal bag or back pack and extra suitcases are $75 a piece and cab be up to 100lbs.

Loved this video! I must say, it’s been chilly a few nights. I had to pull out my one sweater a couple times. In case anyone is like me with zero tolerance for even a slight breeze...bring a jacket/jumper. 😂
All fine and dandy if you live in Mérida (where the weather is too hot for even most Mexicans) and the landscape is as flat as a pancake. Try San Cristobal in Chiapas (compared to Tuxtla Gutierrez just a few miles away), Oaxaca de Juarez, CDMX, Puebla, Guanajuato City for size (compared to León or even SMA). Altitude is a huge game changer when out of Yucatán, and the climate changes are as dramatic as the landscape (plain vs high altitude in a matter of less than a hour drive). Do not assume that your Mérida recommendations hold for the rest of the country. And if you ever want to visit the above mentioned places, I suggest you pack a few warm sweaters and a light duvet jacket even by the end of summer because once the sun sets, you will regret not having them. At 4-5K feet above sea level, it's a different story. Saludos!
North Americans expats tend to form an opinion of the country based on their Gringolandia concept of Mexico without having even visited CDMX. A city that leaves NYC as a boring place.

Hola! I heard that it was difficult to find nice quality sheets and towels in Mexico. Seems silly to me as nice linens are appreciated everywhere! Did you have any trouble finding those items at a reasonable price?

I live in Cuernavaca and I’m gringo. Cuernavaca is perfect springtime weather! Usually Amazon.mx has been my savior. I arrived six years ago with only my own wall art and clothes!! Love Mexico!!

There are good services where if you're living in Panama you can set up an address in Florida and have things sent down with a couple weeks. The added price is not too bad apparently but Panama and Mexico are different obviously. There are similar services for people living in Baja where they set up an address in San Diego and have stuff sent out (like Amazon purchases) at a reasonable additional cost. I suspect this has to do with the fact that there's a pretty porous land crossing coming into Mexico. In Merida you should probably take the mindset that you're supporting the Mexican economy. Maybe a fun Belize run will get the hair care products you need!

You’ll find fig newtons eventually. I’ve traveled many places in Mexico and I’ve seen them many times. I’ve allowed myself to get accustomed to many Mexican cookies and treats in Mexican grocery stores and I really enjoy a lot of them now. Great channel!

David, I feel your pain. Fig Newtons are one of Life's necessities. Wal-Mart here (Costa Rica) has them now but I went 10 years or so muling them in from the US.
I'll be there in April after Semana (Not So) Santa. Make me a list of crap - er, necessities - you need from the homeland. Have an extra empty suitcase.

So, you brought nothing besides clothing and electronics? The clothing clip was awesome and very informative, it kinda fell off from there in helpfulness and specifics.
I have a question for you two. You said you never use any of your clothes you brought for cold weather. You are there in winter now and you have never needed warm clothes? Is it that warm all winter? Also, what about rain gear? Aren't there heavy rains and storms there in hurricane season? Thanks for your answers! PS I love fig newtons too.
Jemma, it is pretty hot in Merida centro all year round, by the beach might be a bit cooler but nothing that warrants a hoodie. We went to Merida in Feb 2019 and it was very hot everyday!!

Hey Vonn - it depends on the product, but generally things from Amazon take longer than what you're used to in the States at least in Merida - it's probably a bit quicker in bigger cities like GDL and CDMX). We don't order much from them anymore, but when we have to, we know it'll take a week or more. There's lots of local options that are much quicker (MercadoLibre and Rappi are our go-to's).
David, do you really want Newtons? We will be there by the end of the month. I really mean it.

I have locs and I use special oils in bottles that are over 3oz for travel. Do I buy 3oz bottles and full them up with oil or what do I do?? I'm not sure my supplier will even ship to Mexico.
I just check a bag that way you can pack your large bottles and don’t have to worry about trying to carry it on.

I ave hats too. Parts of Mexico get cold like San Chris de Casa.... I'm going to miss my beautiful boots, furs, many pairs of jeans, cashmere sweater collection. I dread the shipping cost of my Speakers and will edit my 'record collection. Ha, ha speaking of grande I'm going to assume that I can get my 34D bra's, you guys probably don't know about. Want bring my silk and satin sheets, heard good linens are hard to find. Problem is I have a double bed here.

Honestly? Not a bit - we miss our friends and family obviously, but with the pandemic we hadn’t really been seeing people in person anyway, so FaceTime hangs feel the same from here as they did from LA (except we have a much nicer house here for half the cost 🤷♂️)

One great thing about life south of the border is the death of "dress to impress" culture. Been in Belize 2 years and no longer own sweaters, long sleeve shirts, dress pants and am down to 4 pair of socks.
