As another poster mentioned, we have Costco here in Merida that sells luxurious towels and linens. Lived here 3 1/2 years and pretty much anything you can purchase in the USA is available here (or Amazon mx can get it to you!). Home Depot, Sam's Club, Walmart, etc., are all here. Such a bounty after living in Belize 6 years prior.
Merida was too hot and humid for me, but I was there in 1963, and I took a plane for the first time from there to DF., and I was flying ever since.. I loved Isla Mujeres etc. I do tip most generously, and I love it. La Comer delivers my water, groceries etc., and have locals, who love helping me. I got my first cell phone, when I moved to Queretaro, Mexico. on 11-2-2021. Thank you, and i love your videos!
You guys are so awesome. Thank you so much for this information. I am working on my plan to move to Merida in March 2022 and can't wait to get there. I have watched all of your videos and they have been so helpful. Hope you guys are still there in March, I would love to meet you two:)
Thank you both for all your tips I want to visit before March 2022. If I like it where can I find the steps of the process to move there? How long does the process take from the US to there?
For the faucets: a 25 hour vinegar soak of the end piece soften the scale build up, I think. I even tried baking soda and vinegar on the theory that vigorous foaming action would help. I then work away at the build up by scraping away at it with the business end on a small screw driver. It was worth it in the end.
Nice job. I really liked the tip on vinegar to break up the calcium. My faucet has had the water going in multiple directions for quite some time now, as I haven't been able to get the end piece off "easily" and didn't want to force it. I forced some vinegar up into it a few times and now it comes straight down. Thumbs up!!
Great tips that I hadn't even thought of and they're applicable to Puerto Vallarta where we want to retire to, especially in the hot and humid summer months. Big abrazos to you both.
The entire Yucatan peninsula is limestone and other soluble minerals thus the sediments in your faucet traps. It's a good idea to turn off/on your water supplies (sinks and toilets) once a month too. Nothing like a stuck valve at 3am when the crapper is overflowing! 😲
We are a mother and daughter team of chocolate makers in Cozumel. We own and operate Chocolateria Isla Bella. Our shop is entirely vegan, hand made and bean to bonbon. You guys should check us out when you are on the island. I think you would really enjoy it! We've been enjoying your videos!
These seem like very practical and helpful tips for living in Merida. I had to chuckle at some of them (because I live in Florida) where that little humidifier would overflow every day and where we too have super hard water. Also, I'm surprised that in LA you didn't experience the water jug coolers and delivery services. They are very common in Florida too. Anyway, for those who are not used to those things, you gave very good advice. The other 7 items were things I had not thought about and would also be helpful for people who are new there. Great video, as always!
Thank you so much for these tips. I remember watching a video of yours with some tips when you first moved. I feel like I’m going to need 1 whole suitcase for all the towels, sheets, gadgets, spices etc, and 2 more for my clothes & other belongings. But then hopefully friends will visit me frequently enough that I can hit them up to bring things I learn I need or miss.
I guess AC is a given? jaja The last two Damprids I bought to hang in our closet both leaked :'( You're correct. You can buy a house here without having residency, but to buy and register a car here, you must have residency. Our water delivery in Progreso is $15/garrafon, and a flat delivery fee of $15 no matter how many we order. We actually have a self-serve laundromat at the beach. It's the only one I've seen around. I absolutely love my king sized sheets from Costco in Merida! - Anne
I have been coming to Mexico, mainly Acapulco since 1962. I do speak Spanish as a second language. I moved permanently to Queretaro, Mexico on 11-2-2021 at 79 . I moved because of the deadly crimes and the rents, utilities etc. taking almost all of my retirement income. It is safer, beautiful and cleaner here, and $850 per month less expensive. There is not any shortage or limits on food, and I use home delivery, as I did in the USA . I use Amazon-Mexico to order the foods, that i miss from the USA, and are not sold here. Grits, Louisiana hot sauce, Hormel Beef tamales, Libby's Corn Beef hash, Red chili flakes, and Campbell's chicken noodle soup.. Pork is all that I do not eat, and I cook 99% of my food. Grilled Red Snapper and Pollo Felez are my favorite foods, that I order for take out. I am working on my temp retirement visa, since I did get 180 days, but at this age, I do not want to do visa runs, and never know how many days I will get. I only just heard about dehumidifiers recently and there have certainly been places we've been to where they would have come in handy! We'll have to keep that in mind 👍
Hey guys I know this comment is coming in late and I didn't read all the comments so possibly it's been mentioned... for me a must-have anywhere in Mexico if you're renting for more than a month is an aftermarket Bidet device. Without going into too much detail let's just say it makes life much more pleasant for very little investment. Keeo up the good work - Love your vids!
Based on my own experience, I will tell you that for someone living outside of Merida (I live maybe 20-25 minutes away), a car is a lot less optional. Collectivos are around to a certain hour, a bus too (sort of), but after dark the sidewalks are pretty much rolled up in the pueblos. Add to that.....Merida Uber drivers don't really like to leave the city after say 6pm to drop you off....they most definitely won't come to pick you up. That's not a knock in any way, it's just what happens....so yeah, I have bicycles, a car and whatever I need to get me to where I might want to go 😊
@@NotFinancialAdvice If you don't have a family, you can definitely survive without a car, relying on Uber & Didi, especially being close to Centro! (We also know people with kids who don't have a car and while it's more difficult, it's certainly possible!)
Hi guys ! Thx for all the great videos. Started thinking of moving to Mexico to retire a few week ago. Still have some years to work untill my retirement, but allready orientating on where to live. Great compilation video. You can buy a car on a tourist visa you just can’t register it. But registrations have been suspended until next year anyway. There are also long term rental options.
Hi guys, you are very cool and very informative! We are thinking to move to north of Merida, closer to golf of Mexico. Do you have any advice for us what is the best and the safest place? Love this and love you guys! You're my fave people to watch. Great tips and pointers. Merida is beautiful but oh so hot! Whatssap is so true right?! Leon is from England and it's super popular there. I'm from Canada and had no idea what it was... I downloaded it and literally only had him as a contact (to video call and talk - not on a social media platform - it's one of the only ways) and since being in Mexico for 5 months now my contact list is full! We're in San Cristobal - Chiapas (ended up staying here for our final 3 months in Mexico when it was suppose to be only a month....) we so fell in love! And everyone we meet says they came for a week and never left...it's magical here! Have you visited yet? As for the water guy here he drives around blowing his whistle and clanging some symbol LOL I love Mexico! I'm going to miss it when we leave but we will definitely be back. - Jenn

My wife and I are renovating a home in the San Sebastián/La Ermita neighborhood. Question, our bedrooms are in the back of the property. We NEED our Netflix in the bedroom. Do we need two routers to get the wifi in the back? Our bedrooms aren’t attached to the main house. We just found your channel but love your videos. Keep in touch. Steve and Janice
Hey there! We're not sure what setup would be best (really depends how far away the bedroom is from the main house), but we do know our friends had a casita in Centro they used as a guesthouse and they had wifi back there (not sure if it was two routers or just a mesh system). Our advice would be to reach out on the expat Facebook groups to hear what other people who have similar layouts have used, as they would know better than us!! Good luck on the renovations though (keep us posted on how it all goes!) and thanks so much for watching!!
Hi guys!! Very informative video!! I've been binging all your stuff lately!!! Question for you: since the water is not good to cook with or drink, what about taking a shower and washing your hair? When I was in Korea I had some skin and hair issues due to the water problems there!!! TIA :)
Great question! The water has been fine for us to shower/brush our teeth. It is a little “hard” in some regions (like Merida) so we just use extra moisturizer when we get out, and also make sure to check the faucets for mineral buildup - something we learned about after we moved in. Overall it really hadn’t been an issue though!
We live here in Merida as well and appreciate all your info on the city :-) in addition, we are loving your Bartow Escondido videos.. that is next on our list as well! Just joined your channel and are living it :-) also, we will check out Fitorade... And tell him you sent us. Do you know of any other meal delivery services in merida? Perhaps traditional meal service delivery versus plant-based? I do love plant-based and will enjoy some of those as well. Thanks guys!
That depends on what you're looking for - Centro has gorgeous, older colonials while other neighborhoods (mostly in the North) have much newer builds and then there's everything in between!
We do actually have someone come over and check on the plants / run the water & ac occasionally to prevent mold, but it’s not as much as if we were home so the moisture does build up
So how much do u tip like 15 percent ? Just a general idea hoping to travel in September I don't want to under tip a set amount would easier . Ex. Uber, restaurants .
hi guys im a single dad looking to live next to the malls walking distance 2 beds looking to be around 800 to 1200 max would like to be able to walk to malls do you recommend any high rise buildings by name so i can look them up
It is annoying when they cancel and now it's common everywhere but it's a gig job and they have the right to cater to the ride that is most advantageous to them...you have to keep that in mind. If I were an Uber driver I'm sure I'd do the same thing because that is the freedom that ride sharing gives to both the driver and the customer. : ) Remember when all the choice we had were super expensive taxi cabs or inconvenient and roudy public transit??
@@uliseszarate6561 oh we don't begrudge them at all! Travis was an Uber driver in LA for a hot minute and knows how hard the gig is, so we completely understand cancelling.
Do you guys tip for each jug of water you get, or you stick to the price of the delivery service? I afraid to even ask this in the FB group for the city we are moving too since they are all jumping on us with the comment "how can you even ask and be so cheap etc etc" - but things add up, we definitely want to do the right thing but not throw money when not needed.
Why am I worried about you guys...Thursday (9/2) is ending and no new video from you guys. I hope it is for a good reason and not a bad one. Hope you guys are safe and well!!!!!
I have locs (11 years) and have lived here for the last 18 months. The water makes my locs dry but I add oil and conditioner after I wash and they are fine. In between washes I use Taliyah Wajiid Scalp cleanser.
It's so funny hearing Americans say "tip, tip, tip, tip, everyone." Here in Australia it's so rare to tip it's considered strange if you do! That's the benefit of decent wages for everyone I suppose. The minimum hourly wage here in Australia is $22.00. Waiters and servers earn double that. When in Mexico I'll certainly be tipping. America is so much richer though. Weird to think people need tips to make ends meet there.
Mmmmm...last week you did a Merida (hot) video, BUT you were not in Merida (saying you were not there during the hurricane). I resisted asking where you were, waiting for this weeks video. HOWEVER this week you did another Merida video, so the question is are you actually in Merida NOW? And where were you last week? Are you taking trips that you are choosing not to film? Totally get that, but where were you last week? And where are you now? I realize your youtube videos are delayed, but like knowing what's up in the here and now...muchas gracias!!!!
Haha we were in Merida for the last video! And also when we filmed this one - but you’re right, we missed the hurricane. We’re traveling now and will show these videos soon, don’t you worry!
I have a question guys! Are you still doing customer rep for your job? I'm currently looking for a remote job that I can take overseas and it's rough!! I recently followed Libriya on IG and she has been a godsend. How do I go about asking jobs if they remote truly means remote-being outside of the country, without scaring them off?
It’s super tricky! David actually still uses his CA residency for the gig, which they’re fine with. But it’s definitely harder if you’re saving you’re moving internationally
@@TheRealMoanmyname Yeah, that's what we've heard is best (although it's obviously a risk because if an employer finds out and objects, you could be let go). What we've heard people doing (and what David did) was get the gig Stateside, get all the equipment + training you'll need, do it for a while so you learn the ins and outs and then make a move.
That baby humidifier had me rollin. I didn't even know they made them that small. When I lived in this one (basement) apartment in New England I had one the size of a garbage barrel and the overflow had to be dumped every 10-12 hrs. I just switched from Express VPN to Nord as it didn't work well when I was in Europe after 5-6 months. I've been debating on water delivery vs an ecofiltro system. If you google ecofiltro there are several types. Have you heard anything about them? I know one other person here in CDMX that is using them. www.ecofiltro.com.gt/ As for Uber I had one cancelation last Fri in the centro area of CDMX. I was not happy as I waited 40 min and my food was cold by the time I got home. Friday madness maybe as it was worse than usual. However, if I am just in my area of Benito Juarez/Mixcoac it is always good. However, I am looking at using rideguru for some longer trips as the buses do not allow little dogs to ride inside the coach. I'm not putting a little Chihuahua underneath with the luggage and heat. I never heard of such a thing in my life. Another great video, still waiting for an announcement that you're moving north. 😉
Yes! Our AirBnb in CDMX actually had a filtration system (not sure if it was this specific eco one) and it worked great! We'd never seen one before and didn't know it was possible to have here!
If you live in Mérida (or Mexico) let us know things you think make your life better!

As for the water guy here he drives around blowing his whistle and clanging some symbol LOL I love Mexico! I'm going to miss it when we leave but we will definitely be back. - Jenn
haha we haven't been there yet but it's definitely on our list because literally everyone has told us how magical it is!
Hola amigos! ✨💕🤗
Can I just say THANK YOU to you both for introducing us to Fitorade ✨💕🙏😋
I just arrived in Mérida last week and the first thing I did was contact them and have been living the meals all week 🥳 and their portions are so generous i have more than enough 🥳
Thank you 🙏 thank you! ✨🙏 thank youuuu!!!!!,✨💕🙏🤗
Oh good - we're so glad you're loving them as much as we do!!!
Hello Guys...where is or what is the VPN link..pls and thank you
Sorry - just seeing this! It's: bit.ly/ExpressVPN-CCL
It's just to hot, I don't think I could do it, for sure prefer the Lake Chapala area for that reason, nice and more moderate climate, yet never cold.
The dream!
Do yourself a favor and get a 2-3 gallon dehumidifier. That tiny thing is not only inefficient, but it's leaving most of the humidity behind.
Bought a very nice king sheet set at Liverpool mall two in a pack for I believe 75 usd.
Great information 👍. God bless 🙏🙌
are the plugs/outlets the same as the US or are they like they are in Europe?
Could you show a video how to buy a car?
I bought mine from Liverpool on Sale there lovely [Beding]
Another great video guys, do you know if the water has floride and other contents?
You can't drink the water anyways. And flouride in water hardens your pineal gland and make you docile.
We’re not sure on that, sorry!
How is the weather there? Tropical storms? If I come to check Merida out would it be possible to contact you ??
@@TravelWTravis Thank you for the info!!
What's App has language translation integrated in the app. No need to paste from a different translator.
How much is tipping? % ?
A CAR!!!!’ Family or not. A car is huge.
Great video again neighbors.
Costco here has great sheets and towels.
P.s. Yes there are laundry mats here.
We don't know of any other meal delivery services because we only use Fitorade but there might be others!
Best places to look for apartments? any recommendations?
That depends on what you're looking for - Centro has gorgeous, older colonials while other neighborhoods (mostly in the North) have much newer builds and then there's everything in between!
How much does Fitorade charge a month?
It depends on how many meals you order - you can check out their prices on their website: www.fitorade.com
Why don’t you run the air/fan when you travel? Wouldn’t that cause mold?
We do actually have someone come over and check on the plants / run the water & ac occasionally to prevent mold, but it’s not as much as if we were home so the moisture does build up
So how much do u tip like 15 percent ?
Just a general idea hoping to travel in September I don't want to under tip a set amount would easier . Ex. Uber, restaurants .
We tip 20% for everything!
Could I get a filter for the faucet?? Could that work for all that calcium in the water??🤔😄
We're not sure!
Is it better to tip in dollars or pesos?
Pesos, for sure. Withdrawing them at ATMs are super easy!
Did y’all have a ‘live’ scheduled or am I trippin? I thought I saw something like ‘ask us anything’ but now I can’t find it?.
Haha yep! It’s tomorrow (Thursday) at 11 AM PST / 2 PM EST! Hopefully you can make it!
@@TravelWTravis Awesome!!!
What about phone 📱, do we bring are s or go with Mexican phones,an services, ji m thanks
hi guys im a single dad looking to live next to the malls walking distance 2 beds
looking to be around 800 to 1200 max
would like to be able to walk to malls do you recommend any high rise buildings by name so i can look them up
🙌🏼 Speechless 😶 🙏🏼🥦
Oh man, the Uber drivers canceling is so annoying!! Question, if you don't mind my asking, what is your Wifi speed without the mesh routers?
It’s around 300 mbps down and like 50 up? The mesh system helps get that upstairs
Haha totally understand that. We usually tip 20% for each delivery (which are around like 100-150 depending on how many jugs we’re getting).
Why am I worried about you guys...Thursday (9/2) is ending and no new video from you guys. I hope it is for a good reason and not a bad one. Hope you guys are safe and well!!!!!
That hard water would be terrible for my locs.
I have locs (11 years) and have lived here for the last 18 months. The water makes my locs dry but I add oil and conditioner after I wash and they are fine. In between washes I use Taliyah Wajiid Scalp cleanser.
It has been a year already?!
RIGHT?!! Time flies!
If you bring your USA car into Mexico, you have to take it back when you sell it. Just FYI
Good point!
Get your own taxi drivers.
One of the many things that are weird about the States 🙃
@@TravelWTravis We still love y'all though!
💖💖🙏🏽🙏🏽
The bidet...isn't that important?
haha YES and we completely forgot to mention them! (we have two)
Mmmmm...last week you did a Merida (hot) video, BUT you were not in Merida (saying you were not there during the hurricane).
Its mer e dia
No 😂
I can’t believe that a TP free bum sprayer didn’t make the top 10!
Haha we totally forgot but it’s for sure in the top 10 🤦♂️
@@TravelWTravis what brand of bidet did you buy? I’m concerned that one I might by in the US won’t work/fit for the potty in Merida.
@@janicemueller6228 we brought this one from the States and it works great! amzn.to/3BkXZo2
That water may cause kidney stones.
Another whole video without food!!! you poor boys...lol
Truly starving
I refuse to use WhatsApp... really any Facebook owned app. So, that would be an issue for me.
Then you’ll have a hard time here. Everyone uses WhatsApp
@@TravelWTravis I guess I should not mention being put of the country then?
@@TheRealMoanmyname Yeah, that's what we've heard is best (although it's obviously a risk because if an employer finds out and objects, you could be let go). What we've heard people doing (and what David did) was get the gig Stateside, get all the equipment + training you'll need, do it for a while so you learn the ins and outs and then make a move.
@@TravelWTravis that is a great idea! Thank you
That baby humidifier had me rollin.
Agree on the tiny de-humidifier. Would overflow in half an hour in Okinawa. 😂
Great Info, Thank you!
