@@arthurfernandesmeca6657 yes, substantially different, thank you. If people know enough to cite Henry for the quills/flute melody I don't how they don't realize that otherwise it's a different song. I wonder how many people think the idea of Henry Thomas is cool but never actually listen to him. The whole way through. Even once 😄
hell most people have never heard of canned heat. they were at woodstock and were absolutely awesome. I love this rendition of the song, but hell del and his musicians could play the phone book and it would be great. they are special.
Canned heat is known as Sterno . This is a classic Canned Heat song , they left a legacy that many have played sang jammed recorded by many a band and artist . 05/05/2022
I love Del. He's still in great voice. Long may he live. Many years ago, i was lucky to discover The Del McCoury Band at The Station Inn in Nashville and it was the best bluegrass band i ever witnessed. i'm Australian so i don't get to see much authentic bluegrass but i have followed a lot on record. i don't have all Del's recoprds but i have most of them. He has the pedigree having played with Bill Monroe and his sons, Ronnie on mandolin and Rob on banjo are continuing that pedigree with Del and with their own band, The Travelin' McCourys. It's truly a wonderful thing. Thank you, Del!
I got to see canned Heat back around 1970 at the fort hesterly armory Tampa FL. great band, great song, I love the rendition I just heard , thank you folks !
Mr. Del MxCoury Beatiful voice to listen. The orchestra is ten or twelve musicians, all of them are playing and the music is coming very soft and not crowded. Thank you. Krikor 85 from L. A. CA.
This is beyond wonderful! I had the absolute thrill of being a cameraman on stage at the Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose Alberta, this would have been 2015. After all these other great bands with their mountains of equipment played and made a decent amount of sound...Del and his band come out and with only 2 microphones and as I recall one monitor in front completely floored everyone with the largest wall of sound I've ever been close to! It was simply huge!
Liston up, this is pure Americana, in the best of form. WOW! Let us pray that this music is here to stay. It will keep this country & maybe the rest of the world on track. Love it ! 🤗🎵🎶
What a mark of respect for the old, black blues guy who wrote this on a guitar held together with string and tape, and a home made woodwind instrument that these guys thought it worthy of this arrangement :o)
Exactly! A bluegrass legend whose open mind and appreciation of American root genres allowed him to pursue avenues others of his generation and discipline rarely chose. And we are all the richer for musicians like him. Earl Scruggs was another.
One of all time favorite songs and Canned Heat one of my all time favorite Bands! These fine musicians give the tune new life with lush layers of improvised musical excellence. Wonderful!
People don't give Canned heat the credit they deserve, they were an excellent band with very talented and educated guys when it comes to blues boogie. Bob "The Bear" Hite was known to have one of the largest 78rpm blues record collection in the Country 15,000+ records.✌️ Great job folks.
Dell and all you are beacons of hope. Thank you for resuscitating the simple and obvious message of the 60's . You are real Americans - I am so with you
Killer version of Henry Thomas’s Bull Doze Blues. His original song was rearranged and recorded in 1928 & 1930. Later made famous by Canned Heat in 1968 with new lyrics by Alan Wilson. Superb.
There’s a video on here that has Henry Thomas playing Going Up the Country, complete with the (flute? piccolo? pennywhistle?), Canned Heat did a pretty faithful and respectful cover.
@@davenorman6717 I like the Henry Thomas version the best!!!! Haven't heard anyone sing his original lyrics... His flute sounds like a homemade willow switch!!!!!!!!!

I just found out that this song was not written by Canned Heat. "Originally called "Bull-Doze Blues", in 1927, pianist Johnny Miller rewrote the words and Wingy Manone recorded two versions titled "Up the Country" in December 1927 for Columbia and September 1930 for Champion Records." The version I just heard by Henry Thomas in a 1928 recording has the pan flute-like instrument playing the same melody as played by CH
Del’s voice is so unique, love how he nurtures our up and coming young musicians.❤I love you Del your rich history of Bluegrass, you are truly a masterpiece!
Del McCoury is a bright beam of sunshine. He played with the father Of Bluegrass, Bill Munroe-nice tribute in the back. Great musicianship by all of them.

I was at Woodstock and heard Canned Heat do this. I'll take 'em both, thank you very much.
What can be better than seeing and hearing such a great group of musicians enjoying themselves like this. Cheered up my whole day!!
I loved Canned Heat, still living my Hippie days..No concert will EVER BEAT WOODSTOCK ☮
Atlantic City Pop Festival was also good. 2 weeks later, Woodstock happened.
And Canned Heats version is a cover. From a tune recorded by Henry Thomas which is his version.

Love how Del isn't afraid to explore other genres of music. They adapt these songs so well. But that's what great musicians do.

@Winston Tucker Well said!
This song is blues. Bluegrass is Celtic and blues mixed together. Bill Monroe took blues songs put them in a major key and sped up the tempo
I believe Earl was the first one to do it.
Love these covers! Never get tired of his voice.

Hello how are you doing today…?
By daughter and I do this tune together. She plays a wicked flute that drowns out my so-so uke playing and singing. Best time on earth.

Real musicians playing real instruments. Who would have thought that some people still enjoy these things.
Saw canned heat in 1970. Great energy. Gotta love Del and this excellent group of musicians
