I love these videos! My Dad wrote a letter to Jack O'Connor in 1952 to ask whether he should buy a milsurp rifle, or a new rifle. On Jack's advice, when he was 12 years old he bought a Remington 722 in .257 Roberts. I just took my daughter to the range earlier this week. We shot some of my handloads using IMR 4895 with some 100 grain Speers.. This same rifle took several caribou back in the 1980s. I actually had that rifle on my shoulder when 9/11 happened, about 200 miles west of Anchorage near the Revelation Mountains
These Camp Fire videos are my favorite thing on UA-cam! This is honestly like siting around the fire "what we call RangerTV", with family and friends talking guns, knives and other gear. Having said that my absolute FAVORITE part is your and your dogs interactions! I am so jealous. AWESOME video and please keep them coming!
Good job guys, enjoyed this. And I remember reading about Brian's Africa trip with the Marlin. 45-70 and the old M70, .300H&H. A few years ago I went deer hunting with friends here in western Washington. I had a brand new rifle, the day before opening day, checking zeros, my new rifle now subjected to the cold, would misfire, no good. From past experience I always take a spare. My spare was a pre 64 Model 70 in .300 H&H that ive had many years and used a great deal, I have Supreme confidence in it. The next day, opening day, the biggest Blacktail I've ever seen walked out in front of me at 80 yards, the old Model 70 did not fail! That night around the campfire, besides congratulations, my friends and family ribbed me incessantly asking why I had bought a new fancy rifle when my old .300 had worked so well for so many years? I laughed and said, "excellent question, anyone want to buy a like new rifle?" We all had a good laugh and they said no. Later when I got home I fixed the new rifle. Lubricant had congealed inside the bolt mechanism. I test and shoot a lot of different firearms, but when I go on a hunting trip, that old Model 70 always comes with me, old Reliable.
It's good to have a rifle you can always count on. Jake has had a similar issue with an M1 garand... while going to college in Eastern Idaho he took his M1 Garand out into a blizzard with temperatures in the -20 range. That M1 Garand had some old oil in the hammer spring area that solidified and prevented the hammer from falling with full force and as a result the rifle would not fire at all. He had never had that issue with his Mauser 98s of any form in any weather
Thanks for another fine video, gentlemen. I’m also a fan of the 25-06. Here in South Texas, there is nothing that it can’t cleanly handle, and I’m pretty sure that with the right load, you could sort out just about everything in the lower 48. As for bow hunting, just keep after it! I’ve learned through experience that if you need the meat, better take a rifle along. It’s a great sport and definitely makes you a better all around hunter. Keep ‘em coming, and blessings to all of you.
Thanks for the video. Came to similar conclusions in that the old Winchester 70, Mauser 98, Ruger MKII and Hawkeyes just work in awful conditions. Have the same Marlin 1895's and some 1886 and model 71 348winchesters and Ruger GSR scout. Definately an open style trigger design fan and dont like box triggers for huntjng use.
Thank you for another video, I love this content. You guys will blow up in no time if you keep at it. Love your dads stories, would love a series just on them. God Bless.
Good morning from south central BC again, thanks once more for an interesting video. It's interesting to hear what's worked for you all and what's failed. Our personal experience is a much smaller sampling up here, but for sure Mauser variants and Ruger 77s don't seem to break or not very often anyways. Since 3 of you hunt, I'd be interested in favorite recipes, game handling tips, meat cutting setups, etc. As a former horse guy, I'd love to hear about the tack choices and why you've made them. Mentioned already in the comments but if you've got truck or 4x4 stories they're always fun too. All the best to you all this Labour Day long weekend and good luck on your hunting trips this season.
Wonderful videos! I would love to see some hunts with your .45/70s, which is one of my favorites, because I have put a lot of meat in the freezer with one.
Great video, guys... Future subjects? Dogs, horses, trucks... Saw the back of an old Toyota in one video, I think. I've got a 2002 Tundra. Bit of a smaller frame truck, and when it came out lotta guys called it the boyota. Mines in great shape with no rust. Just about a quarter million miles on it and I still pull trailers everywhere with it... Get cash offers for it often... What do you guys carry in a truck, or in saddle gear?
I'm back from sheep and caribou 6 day hunt with my son in law . Empty handed but what an enjoyable time in the mountains. Saw 14 caribou ( two big bulls ) 8 wolves and a grizzly . My favorite hunting rifle would have to be a circa 1922 factory sporter mauser in 9x57 with the lyman 36 bolt stop peep sight . I like the nostalgia of it and have taken quite a few head of game with it over the years. That said ,this year I carried a 1960 99 savage rotary mag .308 featherwieght with 2.5 ajack scope; " back up" camp rifle was a marlin outfitter P in .444 marlin . I have a similiar skunk story from my youth ,in Saskatchewan , briefly , it ended with me being sent home from school after being "sniffed out " . Thanks for the video.
My favorite is my Grandfather's rifle. Circa 52' Win 70 Featherweight 308.. Last 14 years I hunted elk, I used a cheap Traditions caplock 50cal Hawken. Every year at 20 feet or closer, filled the freezer. I loved using that gun.
Eastern deer woods in our area is thick cover. Farm land and power lines will allow for longer shots, but mostly 100 yards or less is the normal range. The last few years I been using my Marlin Zane Grey 336 30-30 Winchester. I love open sights on my lever guns. As I've gotten older the harder recoiling guns aren't as appealing anymore. So, if I'm not carrying a lever gun I like bolt action rifles in 308, 25-06 and 270. Great video fellows, keep up the good work. 👍
Michigan is very similar. I've used a JM 336 30-30 for 30 yrs now. I bought a Ruger M77 in 270 ten years ago but still always use my 30-30. Just haven't had to make longer shots than 100-150yrds. I'll always keep the 270 (and a 7mm) if ever a hunt out west arises.
Simple systems work. My hunting-rifle-work-in-progress is a yugo-mauser, or a czech0-mauser ,not sure which. Made by Zastava, has a modern trigger system I'm not sure I trust. If putting a win 70 type safety in place wasn't so expensive I would have replaced it. Great video by the way.
Do you guys have elk to hunt where you live I have some lever guns but my most favorite bolt guns are the model 70 Winchesters and I like my pre 64’s but I do have some post models also I just picked up a post model 70 in a control round feed made in the early 90’s with a detachable magazine in which I have never seen before in a 7 mm magnum I also have a pre 64 in a 300 H&H that will clover leaf hand-loads at 100 yards
I'm pretty certain there isn't many brands and models that Brian hasn't tested , if he hasn't on the ones you mentioned it would be very surprising to me. Maybe look into the archives of Wolf Publishing and look for articles he has written in Rifle and the Handloader Magazines as bout bet he has shot them in one cartridge or the other.
Great video as always. I would love to see a video about how to effectively carry a rifle on horse back or maybe some tips on packing out animals on pack horses.
I gave up my 7rem for the 06 .then a savage 99 in303 savage.this cartridge is a little more powerful then the 3030 If im going elk i take my 300 savage 99lever.ive never shot a elk past 285 paces not yds.and im a shorty .lon̈gest deer shot 110 paces i have a few really nice bolts but i dont have much use for them.the savage 99 lever was 100 years ahead of their time and the savage 300 with its lyman apeture sight easilÿ reaches out 300 laser measured yds into a 2gallon̈ paint bucket.with my 58 yr old eyes about an 1 3/4 inches at 100 measured.someone younger can definately do better Great video thanks M
Ps im from nm Deer in the pinyon/ǰuniper.elk up high 8 to9 thousand.there can be some very long shots but i hunt the dark timber.just like my 9to 10 lb bolt rifles i gave up hauling antlers out too Its nice tender cow elk for me The deer get salted and dried for sat night with miller tall boys.thanks again
How are the triggers on your BLR’s? I’ve heard they aren’t the best and can be difficult to work on but I honestly have very little personal experience with them. Thank You.
It's a truly great cartridge that runs almost as fast as a 7mm Remington Magnum, but with less powder, a standard case, bigger magazine capacity, lower extreme spreads, potentially better accuracy, less recoil and a longer barrel life. It's actually one of my favorites!

The roberts is a wonderful cartridge!
👍
Please please! More on the 25-06! Loads, stories, tell it all. I love that cartridge and it doesn't get enough love.
We will definitely have more videos on that in the future!

Great family Brian. Beautiful rifles, love the skunk story, guns and grandkids and dogs, campfire. Can't beat it. Thank you

Correction : The lyman peep sight is a no. 35 not 36.
Thanks for sharing! Always like hearing what other classics people are using
Enjoying Ya'll s videos more than I can express please keep em coming Thanks
Thank you! Will do!
I love y’all’s videos😎
Y’all have the best taste in guns. Everything from tactical rifles to single actions, and I love it.
Thank you!

Thank you! And thanks for watching!
I wish you all the best with you hunts this year
They do their hunting at the grocery store 😝
👍
A good campfire discussion on favorite holsters would be interesting.
Good idea! I'll add it to the list
Much respect for all the rifles/ bows discussed ! thank you for sharring
Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed the video! I don't know much about calibers and would love to learn more about the 22-250 and 25-06.
Alright! I'll add those to the to do video list. Thanks for watching!

Yes we do hunt elk in our area. Great choices!
I have a T/C Encore and a few bbls assorted calibers, and a couple levers. Not shooting your kinda distances. Great stories
👍
My rifles 1950 winchester m70 in 270 win, remington 700xcr in 300wsm, savage 99 in 243 win. At least my favorite. Great story about the skunk 😂😂😂
Great choices! Thanks for watching
Good video 👍 excellent guns 👍. Will and Jake must be on there way to becoming vegan's! Lol
Haha 🤣 basically 🤣
25/06 is a favorite of mine! 100gr ttsx strikes like lightning!
👍
Im from enterprise Oregon its great to see some great UA-camrs from near my neck of the woods
👍
JUST FOUND YOU GUYS. GREAT VIDEO. LOOK FORWARD TO FUTURE VID THANKS
Awesome! Thank you!
Im curious what bullet/bullet weight you use for the 25-06 because a typical load doesn’t have good energy past 200 yards for elk.
How to fix bedding issues with ruger m 77? Full length bed or float and bed action what’s the easiest fix?
Hi guys. What about the 30-30 rifles? Not even one mentioned? God Bless. Happy Trails
Because that cartridge is not popular for western hunting
30-30 is definitely a classic. We have used those in the past
Good Video. You guys use what works.
Thank you!
Does your Father have any experience or opinions on the Savage 99 and the Ruger No.1 and No.3 ?

Yes he had quit alot of experience with Savage 99 and Ruger No.1. Love both of those and will have videos on the future on those
Much appreciated @@PearceBrothersGearGuide
A lefty, good man!!!!
Ya Port makes it hard on us. Always switching side with the camera and such haha
Great video as always.
I would love to see a video about how to effectively carry a rifle on horse back or maybe some tips on packing out animals on pack horses.
Good idea! I'll put that in our future videos list
Mone is my ruger m77 mark II compact in 7mm 08
Nice choice!
I once caught a fish this big.
👍
Lol! 😆
I gave up my 7rem for the 06 .then a savage 99 in303 savage.this cartridge is a little more powerful then the 3030

The deer get salted and dried for sat night with miller tall boys.thanks again
You are correct... the Savage 99 is a great rifle! And the 300 Savage was way ahead of its time
Old gun writer and his boys.
Brian writes articles for reloader magazine
👍
FYI. I called the company and asked how it's pronounced. They said it's pronounced like Lou-pold not Lee-a-pold. Great video.
👍
Yup, 👍🏻
Silly question: What are your thoughts on the m1917 enfield 30-06 for a hunting rifle?
1917 Enfields are great rifles...a little heavy but a very capable. If you shoot it well it I see no reason why it couldn't be used for hunting
Do yall have a new model 70? I heard they’re amazing! I’d like to see one of those reviewed!
Yes we do. I'll add that to the list!
Heck yea, love the Ruger M77 Hawkeye.
👍
How are the triggers on your BLR’s? I’ve heard they aren’t the best and can be difficult to work on but I honestly have very little personal experience with them. Thank You.
They actually aren't that bad in our opinion
@@PearceBrothersGearGuide Thank you for the reply.
Very nice choices 👌. You guys take care.🇺🇲🌲🔥🔪
Thanks, you too!
What do you guys think about 280 Ackley Improved?
It's a truly great cartridge that runs almost as fast as a 7mm Remington Magnum, but with less powder, a standard case, bigger magazine capacity, lower extreme spreads, potentially better accuracy, less recoil and a longer barrel life. It's actually one of my favorites!
No Remington Model 8s?? Winchester 1907s? Savage 99s?? Come on guys!
Those are great hunting rifles as well! Hard to mention everything
You boys ever heard that skunk story before?
Yes we have!
Those wolves are evil!

25-06 ...for elk??!?? Yeesh. Sub sub optimal.
