I have read so much of Brian's stuff I feel like I know him. I have really enjoyed his articles over the years. Glad to see him on youtube. Keep up the good work.
@@PearceBrothersGearGuide Thanks for the reply Brian I heard Mike V refer to you as the cowboy from Idaho. I used to live in Pocatello. Now I live in Price Ut. I bought the family farm here and have a herd of cows and horses. I started my UA-cam a couple of years ago hoping to help fund my retirement. I think you and I about the same age and cut from same cloth. Looking forward to your UA-cam content.
First time I've seen Brian outside of the printed page, and what a treat! Great video, great family, and fun! I really enjoyed Brian's earlier experiences with bigbore leverguns, especially his exploits in Africa with the 45-70. I still use his load data when building heavy loads for bear and moose in AK. Those heavy bigbores could be a good next video idea??? Thanks, Fellers!
Is this the same Brian Pearce who is a gun writer?? Love the video, no blaring hard rock music, as soon as I heard the Hogan's Hero's theme I liked it - then the scene from Big Jake and I was sold! The idea of a lever action offhand competition at 100 and 200 yards is a good one. Real world shooting rather than sitting on sandbags or tripods. 200 yards is still a farily long shot in the real world of hunting. Keep it up!
@@PearceBrothersGearGuide I thought so as soon as I looked at a couple other videos and listened to the obvious knowledgeable info on guns. :) I always look forward to your articles especially due to the fact that you are so knowledgeable about shooting cast bullets. Love my 1894CL Marlin in 25/20. Did a lot of custom work on it and it shoots 1/2" at 100 yards with 3 different bullet weights, jacketed & lead. Will never sell it. Great for mice to coyotes. Wish there were more people who new what a great cartridge it is ! Have the article Brian wrote on it in my load data book and many more.
I'm glad the data worked for you! And yes, the 25-20 is pure fun. I wish that it were a little more popular. I have been nudging Starline to offer brass, which would help. Thanks for the comments and for watching our channel.
Yes, I agree...but this video was limited to lever guns chambered for revolver cartridges with limited velocities and short, fat bullets. Thanks for watching and I will do a savage 99 video in the future.
Another good vid guys thanks! And my experience with Marlin microgroove rifling is that it likes a slightly larger and harder alloy for cast bullets - like Brinell 18.
This was fun! I enjoyed watching this family competition. Definitely enjoy watching anything cowboy. Have a Pearce brothers cowboy action competition! Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!
That was a really entertaining video there guys... lever actions and a great family having fun together. If only I can get my right shoulder fixed so I can shoot again, bad arthritis and can't handle much recoil any more, and I sure miss being at the range with my Marlin's. Have a great New Year!
Another great video! Makes me want to dig out my Marlin 1894 or the 1862 Peabody. The Peabody has horrible sights, but I put Williams peep on the 1894..
how long before they have that paved over with subdivisions too? This whole valley is going to be one big LA basin before they are done. America finally figured out we live in paradise. BTW. You have raised a great family, you should be justifiably proud of them all. I enjoyed every minute of this video. Looking forward to more...
where were you guys at. Up on Willow creek out by Paddock Reservoir.? Happy New Year! I haven't seen you since before Boise Gun Company closed, Brian. We have both aged some. Yessir, I subscribed!
Unless it's a pistol caliber, and that's an if, all levers are 200yd rifles. When they were originally released, they were billed as long range rifles, meaning 200yd's.
My wife has a Marlin 1894 Cowboy series in 44-magnum. In one of her SASS matches, the shooter had to engage a metal target, suspended by a piece of re-bar. Most of the "cowboys" cast some doubt on this li'l lady's shooting ability. After her first shot on the steel, it fell off. Undeterred, unfazed, she ran the lever, loaded her second cartridge, and proceeded to hit the length of 5/8th's re-bar, off-hand. Figure, she gained a lot of respect that day. (Gateway Rifle & Pistol Club, Jax, FLA). On another note, we tried the rifle on the rifle range, a 200-yard NRA high-power target. After 2-shots to guesstimate range, all the other shots hit black, none "key-holed". We were using hand-loads, hard-cast 240 SWC's, starting load data. (Buckskin Kay & Roland Darktower, BOLD 258 - ol' SASS members)
Wow! That's a very cool story. I love to hear stories like that. The Marlin 1894 Cowboys in .44 Magnum are not common, but they shoot very well. I have the 20 inch cowboy and it's a very good rifle. Thanks for sharing and for watching our channel
who makes the western holster with the curled out top ,that's showed in your intro ? did it come like that or did you form it in that shape ? thanl you
Porter's is an early model 1894 with Micro-Groove rifling. When Micro-Groove barrels don't shoot well with cast bullets it can usually be traced to incorrect bullet design, wrong bullet alloy, a bullet that is not sized correctly or a rough barrel. I have many Marlin's with Micro-Groove barrels and they can produce very good accuracy with correct loads. Keep in mind that Marlin .22's in the post WW II era received Micro-Groove barrels and they shoot soft lead .22 Long Rifle bullets very well. And the center-fire guns do too! I would suggest some additional testing before writing off cast bullets in your gun. Thanks for the comment and for taking the time to watch our channel!
Yes, and that is why I handicapped myself with a rifle with a heavy, out of the box trigger pull! With a little trigger tuning and load development it would have much easier! Thanks for the comment!
I must say that I have never heard that comment before!!! Lol I read much about the battle, but I could not understand it all until I walked the battlefield. And then it became perfectly clear. Custer disobeyed orders and started a fight that was literally impossible for him to win. Thanks for the comment and watching our channel.
This shoot was limited to revolver calibers, which eliminated the 30-30 Winchester. But we will be doing more levergun shoots....so stay tuned! And thanks for watching and commenting.
I enjoyed that video another great family shoot I was rooting for Dad because us ole guys gotta stick together👍🏽
Thanks for watching! That old guy can still shoot haha
Like most of us old guys, probably shot more ammo than the younger ones have seen, good shooting!
Thanks! I needed that. Lol
Yes, but these boys grew up shooting! Thanks for watching.
Any hits at 200 off hand with pistol calibers is pretty good . Great video.
Great wholesome fun! Gives one a new appreciation for the cowboys who carried a pistol and a rifle chambered in the same cartridge.
Agreed! Thanks for watching

Props for lugging a Spencer! They're such a cool historical piece, even though SASS rules make it inadvisable to use one.
Yes the Spencer is one of my favorites. I didn't shoot well that day but it will be in future videos for redemption lol
Absolutely great off hand shooting gentlemen. Love your videos, especially ones around lever actions!!

What is the next challenge, service rifles open sights to 300????

When was the last time you saw 5 lever guns at the same time at the range? Hits count, everything else is details:)
True, not many people shoot lever guns these days
I knew they were in trouble when the old man caught the first rounds brass with his off hand
Not a shooter here but 200 yards sans rest seems a little daunting.
Yha 200 yards is a challenge without Red Dot.. but all in all nise session..🙏🏽
Thanks for the support!
Would like to see this with rifle cartridges out of tubular mag guns and one with lever guns with a box mag.
Great idea!
Hey guys what size about are your 200 yard lever comp targets? And what's the best sights for those lever guns? Thanks.
Our target was a full size silhouette. Skinner sights makes some great lever action sights.
who makes the western holster with the curled out top ,that's showed in your intro ? did it come like that or did you form it in that shape ? thanl you
That Spencer surely has light recoil!
It's an easy shooting rifle!
@ Don’t know what they had against sights back then?😂
I’ve got a Marlin like Porter’s, but it has the micro groove rifling and won’t shoot cast bullets
Porter's is an early model 1894 with Micro-Groove rifling. When Micro-Groove barrels don't shoot well with cast bullets it can usually be traced to incorrect bullet design, wrong bullet alloy, a bullet that is not sized correctly or a rough barrel. @ thanks, I’ll experiment with it a little more. I just remember shooting at a fifty yard target and hitting the ground halfway to it
I'd be curious to try my rifle at 200-300 yards. I've got a Vortex Crossfire Scout on it, it's a Rossi R92 in 357 Magnum.
Give it a try, its a lot of fun
Offhand at 200 is not easy...trigger control is what it's all about.... the rifles need more range work to get them zeroed.... lotsa fun though.... 🙂
Yes, and that is why I handicapped myself with a rifle with a heavy, out of the box trigger pull! With a little trigger tuning and load development it would have much easier! Thanks for the comment!
200 yards with a pistol caliber lever action is not an easy feat.
Age handles the pressure 😊😅😂
Ya, it was an easy win with those other performances haha
The Spencer lost but it was all class as was the yellow boy but the contest was already decided when dad cut loose. Or is it grampa?
It's Dad, but he is a Grandpa too. Thanks for watching!
Man I hate how much that first rifle rattles like it's gonna fall apart.
Rattles? The saddle ring makes some noise but the rifle itself is solid. Very nice fit and finish. We'll made quality rifle. No rattle at all.
That Hogans's heros Theme was odd 🤔
Custer got scalped for a reason that Spencer was the reason lol
I must say that I have never heard that comment before!!! Lol

What was the target?
A full size silhouette
If TC chambers it, its a pistol caliber, right?
Target sizes?
The target was a full size silhouette
I thought the org spencers were chambered in .56 cal
Guys, find a bench and adjust your sights! Hahaha
All of these guns are sighted for different loads. We used the ol Kentucky windage adjust on the fly haha
@@PearceBrothersGearGuide I understand. I do think senior's Marlin has the best sighting system, although it's not as adjustable as a ladder.
I thoughtthis video would have been with more traditional cartridges like 30-30, 35Rem. 32.Win and such.
We decided to use any straight wall cartridge for this one. Other calibers will appear in different videos.
Love me a Spencer.
They are awesome guns!
Where the savage 1899
I gotta move out of the city...
💯
Without the Savage 99 in the lineup. This isn’t really a good comparison.
We decided on pistol calibers only for this competition.
I agree the 99s are great rifles, but, to the best of my knowledge, were never chambered for a pistol cartridge.❤
Not a single 30/30 what a shame.
This shoot was limited to revolver calibers, which eliminated the 30-30 Winchester. But we will be doing more levergun shoots....so stay tuned! And thanks for watching and commenting.
