Im fairly certain the glove he's talking about at 3:50 is my buddy's brother's glove. He reached out to hockey Canada after the accident and received a fantastic glove to allow him to continue to play!
This was a phenomenal video. Not too much attention comes towards these guys who are an extremely rare breed that squeeze out that extra potential out of every player. His job is not easy, and to anyone who has ever played hockey we know how much having wrong fitting skates, or overly thick glove palms, or stiff elbow pads affects your level of play. He helps put out the Product that is the NHL player. Protected, comfortable, and with no doubt that unleashes the entire potential of players. Every person is built differently from head to toe, and nobody really ever thinks about how Hockey equipment in the NHL is tailored to support every need. I wish I could learn this mans craft. Marco is the man!
Thank you very much! I wish we could have share all the stories! So many more but with details we can’t make public. Very glad you enjoyed this. It’s a totally different type of video :) more to come !
Great video. I can speak from personal experience about the reputation and quality of the Argentino family in the realm of hockey equipment repair. On more than one occasion, I lumbered out to their location in Verdun to have some of my goalie gear repaired.
I love the interviews with guys like this, he went absolutely above and beyond to give us some insight and he was real and genuine. Some interviews feel extremely scripted. Kudos
What a great chap! Always great to see people who love what they are doing. It is literally written on his forehead that he loves his work. Lot's of pride and joy..
I remember seeing the glove you made for the guy who lost three fingers on Reddit. You did an awesome job and he was super happy and humbled with what you did for him.
This is the type of stuff I love hearing about. The players are great, but these are the people who make them even better. Behind the scenes stuff that you would never see otherwise.
Awesome video! I love to do little mods here and there to equipment, even for others; it was one of my favorite things to do when I worked at a LHS. I’d stay after, off the clock, tinkering or trying things out on my back up gear. I’m honestly envious of this man’s job, just as I’m sure I couldn’t carry his extra reinforced jock strap.
Awesome stuff! I had to modify my CCM skates due to a short leg. Added a 7.5mm 3D printed nylon shim on the one side! I also tore them down and switched the tongues to black felt, so its really cool to see a pro modifier doing the same stuff. Would love to see a video of him customizing a set of gloves. Also, what tools and equipment does he use? What modifications has he had to make to tooling and machine that are specific to equipment customization? Great video!
I had to wait til this afternoon to watch this because I was sitting at my OWN sewing machine doing some automotive upholstery, I caught myself daydreaming about what it must be like to sit and produce a piece of equipment for those guys. I actually have a few acquaintances that are NHL and KHL goalies and alumni. I would love to sit with this craftsman and sew up some stories.

Hope there are many more in the future. Cheers.

Great video! I feel another good question would be what are the most significant changes from the mid 90’s (or before) to now. Such as stick/glove/skate technologies. Also I would love to see that quick sharpening video 😁
AWESOME!!!! ... Marco you are SUPER COOL ... and being Italian descent and being from Montreal area ... i grew up first 10 yrs in Montreal north area and then another 9 yrs on the South Shore before moving to Ontario but I cherish my Montreal time and your facial expressions are so typical of what an Italian/ Canadian and more specific a Montrealer always did ... love your Coffey/ Gretzky/ Messier story ... My father with me in the car once dropped off Maurice "Rocket" Richard's youngest son (Jean) after a game. Jean was on my hockey team in the early yrs when we were in Ahuntsic area of Montreal and the arena was Completely abuzz the once or twice a yr when the Rocket attended a game. Sadly being a 1st generation from immigrant parents I didn't have a clue (idiot i was) who the Rocket was .... despite being a HUGE NHL hockey fan cause once Jean was going around the dressing room collecting hockey sticks and when he got to me ... he said give me your hockey stick ... I put on a weird face and said what for ... he replied so my father can sign it... I said whose your dad .. he said the Rocket.. I looked dumbfounded and didn't give him my stick .. the kid next to me said his dad is the Rocket in a semi excited voice .. I replied well He's no Bobby Orr .... DUMB DUMB .... later as i got older did I READ about Maurice Richard
I can't prove, but I'm pretty convinced that 'pro-stock' equipment (and I mean the equipment made for NHL players) made from different materials, to meet the different standards and go through ultimate quality control process. I've had two two pair of skates (one pair from Brad Richards, another -- Erik Burgdoefer's) and oh man, those skates are just amazing. I used CCM U+ Pro (Brad Richards) for 5+ years, pretty heavily and changed them may be year and a half ago for my current skates (may be very first version of Jet Speed, w/o numbers, Erik's). What can I say... These skates are made to last, contrary to the retail skates which probably assumed to fell apart just at the end of the 2-years cycle CCM/Bauer used to adopt.
I think Brendan Gallagher once said he had to customize his glove to prevent hand injury, like protecting his pinky and ring finger with a second layer of protection
@@SevnZeroFive the cost would be the exact same no matter what. It would be easier to have a point of reference of what the player already likes and then work off of that.
Christian Oates right now they are taking gloves of the assembly line and then customizing them. The cost wouldn’t be money it would be time. To make an individual pair of gloves for each player you’re having to change something on a machine for each player or some bs
@@christianoates2485 because they can save tons of time by using parts that were made by people who make a lot less money in china, than paying specialist to do the whole job
I am sure the assembly line worker makes a lot less than this guy. So if the glove is 80% stock 20% custom, you don't want this guy doing 4x as much work per glove than he needs to for custom gloves.
Question for part 2 What is the best way to keep a pair of gloves from smelling terrible and what is the is safest way to wash/clean a pair of smelly gloves? Asking for a friend.......
Gonna guess on that player at 6:15 before I see at end. Only guy I can think of cause he had a serious mullet and I liked his hockey card was Stevenson. I think he had a good amount of scraps in 95.
So I played decently high level hockey ncaa d3 and I was never that touchy about something like gloves. As long as they weren’t too heavy like some warrior models were. Sticks and skates were the only things I think every player should be super picky about.
Ovi’s old school vector gloves hanging up next to that koho poster. Ovi HEAVILY modded those things. He cut out like half of the cuff of those things. It must have been this guy who did it

tidbits ive heard over the years: steve yzerman wore heavy pants. if he didn't like them, he'd write on them with black magic marker these suck and send them back. lindros used an ultra heavy stick. paul coffee wore skates several sizes too small. ray borque hated wet gloves. he would use a dry pair each period. all of this is very standard now, but back then, guys used what was available. nowadays, players are pampered. anything they want, they get. in the real old days, guys would put styrofoam in their shinpads for more protection because the endless options weren't available.
Does Bauer not allow or participate in behind the scene vids like this?? It's always CCM here on this channel, not a bad thing but would love to see a comparison on the two big guns with vids like this
I wish I could have this guy make me gloves and skates. I haven't been on ice since I was 13 because my hands and feet are a very unusual size. Just getting shoes and boots that fit properly is near impossible. I couldn't skate without custom skates and there's no chance that will happen.
Guess it's kinda late but a question I would ask is what is the process for equipment that doesn't "feel right". Do they have calculated measurements and just step them down slowly, making a new glove for each one?
I find that the palms of typical retail gloves wear out very fast. If you’re getting a glove re-palmed, what would be the best material to get if you’d like to extend the shelf life of your glove?
All question time stamps are linked in the video description

Is there a 2nd part that shows him making the glove and sharpening the skates? Really wanted to see that...
I think Brendan Gallagher once said he had to customize his glove to prevent hand injury, like protecting his pinky and ring finger with a second layer of protection
DPhilipp32 Gallagher. Broke his same hand twice in 2 consecutive seasons. He has a extra block of padding on the outside.

A question for part 2:
Wouldn't it be easier to build the complete glove exact for the player than take a retail glove and customise it
