Thank you so much for this video. I am a beginner goalie who was very overwhelmed with trying to figure out the approach to gearing up. I like how you explain what you use and why…also you are so incredibly funny. Love watching your videos.
Looks good. A couple things I do differently is none of my gear touches the floor with the exception of my leg pads, which input upside down against the wall. I put my skates on before my pants cause being 44 years old my feet seem to get further away every year. I am a chesty tucker as well but what I do is remove my pant lace from the top eyelet on each side, bring the lace up through the loop on my chesty, cross them, then back down to the top eyelets of my pants and then tie together. Great work.
As I explained in the video - my gear doesn't go on the floor either when I am in the dressing room - hang the chesty, hang the pants, everything else on the bench, but unfortunately we weren't allowed in the rinks when I shot this video. I like that idea for tying down your chesty - - gonna try that!
5:45 I made a save on the ODR today that went right through the butterfly but hit the knee pads solid. Shooter thought he scored, and I didn't hardly feel it, it was a good save all around! And yes, I prefer the wax laces too.
Ever since the PWHL started I've decided I wanted to try playing hockey it's felt like a weird pipe dream to start as an adult, so THANK YOU for this video and for sharing that you're a beginner/intermediate player as well.
hi, thanks a lot for the videos. I started playing hockey and goalie this year at 28 years old in the UK! I'm loving it so far. Anyways - I'm moving to Canada on a 2 year work visa early next year, probably to British Colombia. Do you think it will be easy enough to find somewhere to play for a newbie adult? Thanks again!
Yes, I do think you will be able to find somewhere to play Callum. It will depend where in BC you are living, but there are typically lots of levels. Excited for you!
I use wax laces because when to tighten them they stay tight. Great video, I'm going to try tying my pant to my chest protector but I'm not sure if I can tuck them in. I have the knee pants from my Bauer pants and then I put knee protection on top then my very old Vaughn V3 7500 on. I need bigger goalie pants but not what to get. I have always wear Vaughn gear because it's made in London Ontario. I tried on a pair of Mckenney today and it felt good but hard to know until your on the ice. I have been playing since I was 7 and now I'm 40 so gear has changed a lot.
Same reason I like the waxed laces too! It is tough to know what will feel best on the ice, it feels like there are so many combinations/options for pants and chest protectors. I hope you find something that works and feels great for you!
I cant tell you how many times ive forgotten to tie and clip my pants until im on the ice warming up >.< I am so glad im not the only one who struggles with jerseys. What ive decided i like best is putting it on before i put the chestie arms on. I slip the jersey over my head, then out the chest pad arms into the jersey sleeves then put my arms into the chest pad arms. And unfortunately my equipment doesnt fit well so whenever i have to adjust my mask or drink water i usually slip a whole arm out of the protector to reach x.x
Been playing goalie on and off since the late 1980s, so I figured I probably wouldn't see anything new in this video. But I find it interesting to see how different goalies do things, so I watched. As it turned out, it has never occurred to me to use a skate lace to tie the pants to the upper part of the chesty like that. Gonna try that out myself this week. Thanks, Maria!
You are welcome Mac -- excited to give you a different idea. It's not my idea at all, my friend Michael Ouzas (who was a REAL goalie) told me to try that and I loved it. Nothing better than goalies learning from goalies :) Hope it helped.
Not sure why I clicked this video, I've been playing goal for like 25 years, I know how to put my gear on. But, I'm glad I did, it was fun to see how another goalie does it. I do a number of things differently, and some things the same. I keep all my gear in my bag, I have it packed in a very specific order so that the first stuff to put on is at the top, and the last stuff is in the bottom. This is my order: Padded under shirt on first. Then my jock. I wear lightweight in pants/leggings over my jock to help keep it in place. Then my hockey pants go on (no suspenders). Next are my skates. After that, I put on my knee wraps. And then my leg pads, my leg pads have been around awhile (almost time to replace them) so I still have leather straps and buckles, so this step takes awhile. Now that all the lower body gear is on, and the remaining gear is pretty quick to put on, I take some time to breathe and clear my mind, and then some visualization. After that, my neck guard goes on, and then my chest protector. Chest protector over the pants. Now it's jersey time, and fortunately I'm pretty small and the goalie jersey my league team has for me is really big, so it isn't as much of a struggle. Don't forget to tuck that jersey! Finally, glove, blocker, and mask goes on last.
I like that you tuck your jersey too... if it's good enough for the Great One... it's good enough for us :) I like that idea of leaving everything in your bag too - good one. #waxedlacesclub
Great video Maria! Some old-timers say "breezers" instead of pants and "sweater" instead of jersey. My toe-ties are tied to my blades (not over the boot) and I never untie them. After undressing, I twist each skate and tuck the blade into a corner of my pad. Then I use a strap (I have those old leather straps) to hold each skate in place. Then I cross-buckle the tops of my pads together and throw them over my shoulder which leaves plenty of space in my bag.
Yes, I'm totally familiar with the breezers and sweater - - I am old enough that I actually had one of those itchy wool hockey sweaters that my Yia Yia bought for me at Canadian Tire - - beautiful scratchy Habs jersey! Leaving your skates attached to your pads... now THAT is a new one for me - - very inventive!! Thanks for sharing that Jonathan!
Brand new goalie here. Just had my 1st skate just the other day. Wish I had seen your video sooner but the tips you gave will definitely help me for my next skate. thank you.
Amazing Aaron! Hope you had fun out there - you probably had some frustration too. Just stick with it, get a little bit better every time out and just go out and have fun!@
I always have a hard time putting on my blouse! I dread having people watching me because the struggle is real! Thought I had a great system down to getting it on but that went to crap when I changed chest protector. Great video!
ha ha - I know it is absolutely anxiety inducing. I feel like everyone is thinking... 'she can't even put on her jersey - how is she going to stop a puck?'
Being a beginner goalie, but an experienced goalie parent, I knew exactly in which order to put my stuff on. And it is almost exactly the one described in the video (I use suspenders that I setup exactly the same way, don't feel the need to lace the chesty though). The only tiny difference is that I put the neck protector after I put on my skates, having something around my neck while I'm bent forward to lace my skate is uncomfortable. And being a hockey parent, I switched to waxed laces a long time ago.
That's a good idea... have a kid... get them to be a goalie... practice putting on the gear for a few years so you know how it goes on when you finally start to play! Genius!
Four tips to share with the group: 1. I have always worn wool socks with a garter belt, with my knee pads OVER the socks, but have recently been told I should be wearing the knee pads UNDER my socks. After trying both ways, I am sticking with the knee pads OVER the socks, with a bit of clear tape underneath each knee to make sure they don't sag. 2. Knee pads are a MUST: I prefer less bulky (Vaughn SLR 2's), to Warrior's which feel like my knees are hermetically trapped and hamper my mobility; 3. On my chestie, I have worn NOTHING underneath for years, which serves to keep me much cooler when in Spring, the rink warms and the ice is soft; And yes, strap the Chestie down in the back, and lace through your pants to keep it from rising; and 4, I always adjust my mask tightly before i step on the ice. Inevitably with the sweat and stretching on the straps, your mask is going to become looser and you don't want it obstructing your concentration.
Great tips all around Scott - - thanks so much for the insight - good tip on the mask, I feel like mine gets a little sloppy during the game, might try snugging it up a little.
I got them from thehockeyshop.com a few years ago. I don't think Bauer still makes them, but I think Gform makes ones like them still. Search "G form knee pads" and you should find their site.
It took me a couple of days to comment, but literally it's like you read my mind. I'm coming back after 8 years, and last train session I had an issue with the tightness on my leg pads (landing too much on the face of the pads) so I came home thinking of looking on this topic right when I got the notification of the new video! The Ice scene is sadly dead here in Buenos Aires (hopefully there's a new rink coming up to light it up again), so I apply all of this to Inline hockey which is still small but at least it's something. Love watching your videos, and specially your engagement with the audience.
Thanks so much Mateo - - happy to help (and read your mind). Hope you guys can get a new rink up and running. Buenos Aires is on my 'must visit' list... you can tell me where to get the best coffee when I come :)
lol awesome video Maria - I lay out my stuff in order too because I've forgotten "what comes first" then I have to undress and redress again! thanks for sharing
do you have any tips for new hockey goalies? i just now started getting into it and i was wondering if you had any tips like scretches or anything else
Good idea - a great option if you want to get started is to buy used gear. That's what I did when I started out. Some stores sell used goalie gear, but you can also buy used gear online.
Thank you so much for this video. Informative and entertaining. You have a great demeanor on camera, and make it seem less intimidating to get into the world of goaltending! My son just started and this information is invaluable! Thanks again!
Maria, You always bring a smile to my face😁 the laces through the chesty 👍🏻 As a female, I’ve always struggled with keeping my chesty down!! Same with my player gear. Suspenders help keep it down from swallowing my head! I swear one day, I’m going to get a custom piece for my T. rex arms. I was in a Bauer Senior Small, now a Warrior G2 Senior Small, I always have to creatively customize / shorten the arm straps with duct tape. I’m 5 mos post rotator cuff sx as of yesterday, and the Jersey is a REAL struggle now… guess I’ve got to get stronger in that arm. Grateful to be back on the ice. Thanks Maria as always ❤️
Glad to make you smile - - that's a win! Hope the shoulder is coming along well - that's a tough surgery, but typically really good results. I am actually getting a custom chesty from Kennesky done up that will have a senior body with smaller arms a little bit smaller floaters - - excited to see how it feels. Glad you are back on the ice, good luck with the remainder of the shoulder rehab... you will know you are back to 100% when you can pull that jersey on :)
What size pads do you wear? My ankle to knee is a little disproportionate to my overall leg length. I really need a 31” for the knee to fall right but then can’t get enough thigh rise on anything stock. Do you know if warrior can/will make a custom pro pad (something like 31+3 ?) They only show custom starting at 32” or any other tips to help bring my knee up a bit (to maybe fit in a stock 32”)
I wear a 31+1 INTERMEDIATE... and you can for sure get those custom, but they have to be intermediate. Not sure how much thigh rise they can do though. I don't really have any other good suggestions, but reach out to Warrior and see what they say.
Love your videos! Very usefull and fun to watch! Not being a goalie myself, but my son started again, so this is really helpful. 😃 As a player I also had problems keeping track of all the stuff, so I started to put my gear in reverse order in the bag. This way I can simply put on everything in the right order and don't forget anything. And it also helps to not forget packing something up before I go to the training. 😃
Glad to help - hope your son is having a blast stopping pucks out there! I have the same thing - a system when I put it back in the bag so I (hopefully) don't forget anything.
About to play goalie for the first time on Thurs. Never even tried in practice Helping out a buddy. Watched a few of these vids. Very helpful for sure. Appreciate having the resource to get me started. Here goes nothing 🤞
I can't wait to get into a locker room full of goalies. One question: Don't you have shelves and or cubbies in your locker room? My glove, blocker, water, and mask go on the top shelf. Sweater and chestie get hung. Pants/jock, socks, under shirt go on bench. Skates and pads stay on the floor. Regular laces. Haven't tried the waxed laces. Seem "fussy" (to borrow your word) to me. I love your bag. Where'd you get that? I've got a beta goalie bag from Conway + Banks and had a wheeled Bauer goalie bag that's falling apart. Looking for the perfect bag.
No shelves or cubbies in our rink, so chesty, jersey and pants get hung up; everything else goes on the bench except my skates and pads. The bag is a Bauer bag - got it at Herm's Sports in London I think, but it is far from perfect. It is wearing faster than my old CCM bag for sure.
I use unwaxed laces. I find they stay tight better. They don't gather moisture because my pad is over them. Just my preference. Thank you for helping me be a better goalie.
Nice video! I’m a new hockey fan “Go Kraken!l”. So it was nice to see how the goalie gears up. Would love to try myself, but my window has past me 😂. However, your videos are nice to watch and get the inside look on things. ✌🏼✌🏼
Glad you enjoy them Mike - - we could still make a goalie of you yet. I do work with goalies who did not start playing until they were in their later 40's and even their 50s. So maybe that window is still open just a crack???
Found your channel through the HockeyGoalies subreddit, enjoying what I see. RE skate laces, I use unwaxed but I also loop the laces outside-in, it keeps the boot tight around my feet.
Yes, the old outside in lacing - - that would do a good job of keeping them tight... and might even make it easier to get them undone too. Good thought. Welcome to the channel - glad you like it.
Learn a tip, and give a tip:) I love the pant lace through the loops of the chesty. Can’t wait to try that one👍🏻👍🏻 One thing I would suggest is adding hockey socks over your knee guards. I found they got stuck on the inside of the pads a couple times when I didn’t use socks. With socks on I apply sock tape on the top and bottom of the guards to keep them in place better. You may find that helpful:)
Impressed you do not use a wheeled bag Maria! Or do you when you go to the rink? :-). I too tuck my chesty in and tie it down like you. My only difference in gear sequence is to secure the goalie pads(Warrrior RTG2) toe straps to the skates first before putting on the skates. After I have the skates on I would double or triple tie bow knots for the skate laces. Then I would secure the rest of the pad strapping to the leg.
No wheelie bag for this gal... I feel like if I can't carry my own gear then I don't deserve to be there :) ... and 'yes' sometimes that is the hardest part of the game - - ha ha! Attaching your skates to your pads first - - that is a new one for me - interesting.
I really love watching you, I learn a lot. Are there any tips what I can do to keep my knee pads at there place? They always decide to walk down, no matter how hard I strap them. Even when I knot them on my pants, they find a way to go... Thanks for any ideas!
hmmmm - - I am lucky because my knee pads stay in place pretty well. I know some goalies wear hockey socks over their knee pads and then put tape above and below them. You might want to try that.
Great video! I think we all forget something at one time or another. Like that you use the G-Form knee pads, I do too! I will also use the G-Form elbow pads as I like the little extra protection in case the chesty's elbow pads move on me. I have had that happen. When I pack my bag, it is packed in the order in which I put the gear on. that way it all remains in the bag till I need it and if I have to move for some reason, it is still in the bag.
I think it really comes down to personal preference. I really like my Warriors because they are light, I like the way the straps feel and how they move with me. I tried Bauer and did not love them... but loads of other goalies do. I don't think there is bad equipment, just equipment that isn't the best for different sizes, styles, etc.
Played my first game yesterday since the lifting of this lockdown. Sadly took a puck to the knee and had to cancel todays game due to the injury. Will buy a new pair of PRO knee pads. Sadness.
I use wax laces in my goalie skates and player skates because I feel like the hold better and don’t loosen up. Where the unwaxed do loosen up over a game and when I get tired I need that ankle support to be there…
My sister saw part of the video and she has a question: Are you a Sabres fan? (She noticed the Sabres Jersey you have on the wall in the back) She just wanted me to ask this, thanks!
Thanks! So you worked with Robin Lehner and or Carter Hutton? That's super cool!!! If I'm wrong that is still really cool! (Sorry if I'm being annoying by commenting so much XD)
The very first time puck hits your knee you will learn the lesson ... use what ever is available or game can be over one day! Once I forgot my neck protection and during warm up some one shot the puck when I was looking different direction. It hit to collarbone and just cut my skin all the way to the bone. Was a lot of blood. Another lesson I learned wrong way :-))
And one more thing - no rings. When your finger will be hit by puck it will get swollen. Than you will hurry up to cut it while it is possible ... Stay safe. Have fun
@@andreyborovik2815 That's exactly it... the one time you forget a piece of gear, you know you're gonna get hit there. That collarbone story is crazy, but it makes sense.
@@andreyborovik2815 Yes - great point with the ring as well - - I had a very minor puck off my ring finger through my glove once and it just swelled a little bit, but that was enough for me - now I always switch into a silicone wedding band when I go on the ice.
I just recently got kneepads. I used to this it was so unnecessary but just as she said i wend down in the butterfly wrong and took a stinger on the inside of my knee and my whole knee was swolen and purple for weeks. Never again
@@goalietraining I thought of your video when I almost forgot a crucial piece. I hadn't been on ice in gear in years. Pads etc all new to me from 2019 bought in 2020. I feel like I'm 7 years old in a good way out there
I know exactly what you mean when you say you feel 7 years old in a good way - just playing the game for the love of the game. Happy for you @@markjones1184
Always fun to see how other goalies go about getting dressed. While I also lay out my gear and take up more space than I probably need (social distancing, yeah, that's the ticket), I also pack my gear in a specific order before heading out. Following the same order ensures A) that all my gear fits in the bag and B) I don't forget anything at home. Pulling it out at the rink, gear goes to its "assigned" location and then it's similar to Maria's method. Minor differences: I wear hockey socks to keep the knee pads secure and I put my trapper on before the mask because I like it very secure and tight to my hand and, weirdly, I can't get the same torque when I have the mask on.
Same - I put my gear in the bag in a specific order too. I find it interesting that you put your trapper on before your mask - - I feel like I need both my hands to get my mask the way I like it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
@@goalietraining My mask is custom-fitted, so it slides on and sits perfectly 99 times out of 100, with the 1 time serving as a reminder that I need to get my hair cut because the mop is too thick. I might be more particular to the way my trapper is set than my mask; I fiddle with most of the velcro straps on the trapper to get the right feel and with the mask on, I don't have the same visibility. Goalies aren't weird--we like things done in a specific way. 🙂
I use “Option B” skate straps instead of laces now; switched when we returned to playing and are only given 10 minutes to get dressed. Put my skates on in seconds now.
I use waxed laces too. I like to tie the foot not too tight, but the ankle very tight. I use "bungee" to attach the pads. Since I have about ten pairs of pads and buying a "bungee" kit for each pair of pads would be too expensive...I made my own bungee, ordering a roll of bungee rope and small metal ties to secure them together.
Hello from Russia! I liked your comments about knees protection. I am surprised you do not use hockey socks above those. In KHL goalie will get 2 minutes penalty if he doesn't use them. And I like that the socks help your knees protection to stay on their place. Try it and you will see.
@@andreyborovik2815 I could for sure - but my legs are already warm enough with my base layer, so wearing socks isn't for me, but I know lots of other goalies do.
It can be confusing, but it's great that you have the desire to learn how to do it yourself. One thing I did when I first started playing that helped was this: I would practice putting on my gear at home (just make sure your skates don't scratch the floor if you put on your skates). But that helped and then the ORDER that I pack my bag helps because I have a system for where I put everything and that helps me not forget items.
I ended up getting used equipment for a shinny league. I had a friend who was supposed to come to the rink with me to help me get dressed cause I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I would have been decently ok, but I didn't have laces or a strap on my pads, so they kept spinning around worse than an amateur pole dancer. I tried the skates on, and they seemed a lil snug but nothing too bad. Until I got to the rink, put them on again and actually STOOD UP in them. I can't see what width they are as it's second hand and worn off but ow ow ow. Way too narrow. My feet still don't feel right and it's been 4 hours. I only had the funds at the moment to get a player helmet cause it was $65 vs like $200 on average, and I felt I kept eating the foam bit for the chin on the cage. Everything just wants to ride up on a goalie - so I thank you for the tips to help keep everything down. But I'm not totally discouraged yet. I'll find a wider pair of second hand skates, and try getting dressed before the rink again. I'm just such an awkward shape. My ATK measurement puts me in 26" pads claiming I should be 4'10 when I'm 5'5. Despite the awkwardness ad the pain however, I signed up to be there, so I at least floundered onto the ice for 10 minutes partially hanging onto the crossbar for dear life before my feet were probably turning purple and I was in tears. PS the skates came with waxed laces, but I think they were a lil bit old because they did not move like yours did. I was having a large amount of trouble getting it loose enough to get my foot in there.
Oh wow - we call this adventures in goaltending. I started with all second hand gear too - - my skates were too big though, so not painful, but sloppy. The worst was my how bad my glove and blocker STUNK!! Stick with it, you'll get there.
The beginning has me laughing LOL "do, do do dooooo" very helpful. You know, I used to put my pads on as tight as they can go and they did rotate but they definitely rotate better now that i've losened them up a little. I have a problem with my helmet though, When I try to put it on, I can't get it on without unlocking the side straps because i wear glasses and they don't fit well through the bottom. Not sure if this can be helped or not. The hardest part is trying to get the straps to lock on, i usually need help for that but I wish I can do it independently
Glad to give you a chuckle :) That would be tough wearing glasses under your mask. I can't get my snaps on or off by myself at all - - I see NHL guys do it all the time and I wonder how they do it.
@@goalietraining Yeah, I saw Craig Anderson take one of his snaps off the other day and I'm like wait how you gonna get that back on before the play starts but obviously he was able to and I'm just over here like whaaaaaat LOL It's especially hard in all the equipment, maybe it's just a learning curve.
My order: Underlayer Pants - Jock - Knee guards - Socks taped up - Pants - Skates - Leg pads - Wait for about 2 minutes before leaving the locker room - UnderShirt - Chesty - Jersey - Helmet - Blocker - Glove. Grab stick on the walk out
@@goalietraining also I’m a psycho and I go… g force knee pads-> stockings->skates->warrior knee pads->cup->pants->goalie pads->neck protector->chestie->jersey->gloves->mask 🤷🏼♂️

hi, thanks a lot for the videos.
I started playing hockey and goalie this year at 28 years old in the UK! I'm loving it so far. Anyways - I'm moving to Canada on a 2 year work visa early next year, probably to British Colombia. Do you think it will be easy enough to find somewhere to play for a newbie adult?

I cant tell you how many times ive forgotten to tie and clip my pants until im on the ice warming up >.<
I am so glad im not the only one who struggles with jerseys. What ive decided i like best is putting it on before i put the chestie arms on. I do a number of things differently, and some things the same. I keep all my gear in my bag, I have it packed in a very specific order so that the first stuff to put on is at the top, and the last stuff is in the bottom. This is my order:
Padded under shirt on first.
Oh yeah, almost forgot, waxed laces! Same reasons you said, they stay put better.
Great vid. What size are those goalie pants for you for sizing reference?
I am pretty sure they are Senior Small (but could be Sr M)
Brand new goalie here. Just had my 1st skate just the other day. Wish I had seen your video sooner but the tips you gave will definitely help me for my next skate. thank you.
Amazing Aaron! Hope you had fun out there - you probably had some frustration too. Just stick with it, get a little bit better every time out and just go out and have fun!@
How’re you doing now?
I always have a hard time putting on my blouse! I dread having people watching me because the struggle is real! Thought I had a great system down to getting it on but that went to crap when I changed chest protector. Great video!
ha ha - I know it is absolutely anxiety inducing. I feel like everyone is thinking... 'she can't even put on her jersey - how is she going to stop a puck?'
Just recent switched back to unwaxed. I found with the waxed I would get some lace bite and some numbness from them staying too tight
Don't blame you - lace bite is never cool.
Genius!
Seriously every video you post is so informative and useful. Love your channel
Thanks so much Gabe - really nice of you to say that! Glad to help
@@goalietraining My pleasure...dont forget to replace the internal head band from time to time as well, to wick away and absorb sweat!

Hi,
Where did you get gform knee pads?

Good idea - a great option if you want to get started is to buy used gear. That's what I did when I started out. Some stores sell used goalie gear, but you can also buy used gear online.
@@goalietraining Okey. Tnx for your help:) I didn’t even think of used goalie equipment before;)
Thank you so much for this video. Informative and entertaining. You have a great demeanor on camera, and make it seem less intimidating to get into the world of goaltending! My son just started and this information is invaluable! Thanks again!
Thanks so much for your kind words Jeremy - sorry I didn't see your comment earlier. Good luck to your boy!
Your video was sooooo helpful. Back to playing goal at 49!
Amazing J-P! So happy to hear that - good for you!
As a player I also had problems keeping track of all the stuff, so I started to put my gear in reverse order in the bag.
Never even tried in practice
Helping out a buddy. Watched a few of these vids. Very helpful for sure. Appreciate having the resource to get me started. Here goes nothing 🤞
Have a blast out there Aaron! Don’t be surprised when it is harder than it looks - we all feel that, just have fun!
Always happy to help... even if you like unwaxed laces - ha ha - just kidding
😂
Can’t wait to try that one👍🏻👍🏻
One thing I would suggest is adding hockey socks over your knee guards. I found they got stuck on the inside of the pads a couple times when I didn’t use socks. With socks on I apply sock tape on the top and bottom of the guards to keep them in place better. You may find that helpful:)
Thanks for the tip - I appreciate it! I will give that a try.
@@goalietraining
I tried it with the hockey socks and, how to say, problem fixed. 😎😁
Thanks a lot!
@@katharinakropp3751 YESSSSSS!!! Awesome news! Thanks for letting me know.
@@katharinakropp3751 you can also try CCM garter belt
Great video! I think we all forget something at one time or another. Like that you use the G-Form knee pads, I do too! I will also use the G-Form elbow pads as I like the little extra protection in case the chesty's elbow pads move on me. I have had that happen. When I pack my bag, it is packed in the order in which I put the gear on. that way it all remains in the bag till I need it and if I have to move for some reason, it is still in the bag.
That's a good idea - keeping it all in the bag. I love the G-Form knee pads - - they are so luxurious!
What do you think is the best brand?
I think it really comes down to personal preference. I really like my Warriors because they are light, I like the way the straps feel and how they move with me. I tried Bauer and did not love them... but loads of other goalies do. I don't think there is bad equipment, just equipment that isn't the best for different sizes, styles, etc.
I used waxed laces but it cuts my hand whenever I’m tightening my skates for some reason, do you have any tips so it doesn’t do it anymore?
Maybe try a different brand of waxed laces, some are softer than others for sure.
@@goalietraining I’ll try that, thanks

Thank you very much.
I use wax laces in my goalie skates and player skates because I feel like the hold better and don’t loosen up. Where the unwaxed do loosen up over a game and when I get tired I need that ankle support to be there…
Exact same thing here - I love how the waxed laces hold.
My sister saw part of the video and she has a question: Are you a Sabres fan? (She noticed the Sabres Jersey you have on the wall in the back) She just wanted me to ask this, thanks!
I am Leafs fan (my back up team is the NY Rangers), but I have worked with Sabres goalies, so they gave me a jersey.
Thanks! So you worked with Robin Lehner and or Carter Hutton? That's super cool!!! If I'm wrong that is still really cool! (Sorry if I'm being annoying by commenting so much XD)
I used to be a goalie that didn’t wear knee pads… until I tried it. Then I was like “how did I not do this before!?” Such a game changer for me.
Totally - you don't even realize how good it is going to feel until you try and then it is so decadent!
Where do you get your gear
Source For Sports in London, sometimes Herm's in London and some I order off the interwebz - really like The Hockey Shop for online stuff.
I just recently got kneepads. I used to this it was so unnecessary but just as she said i wend down in the butterfly wrong and took a stinger on the inside of my knee and my whole knee was swolen and purple for weeks. Never again
Exactly... you don't know you need them... until you need them!
Where are your CCM axis?
They are just on my storage shelf - - I still use them - I probably split time about 50/50 between the CCMs and the Warriors
As a goalie I love this - easy sub well done lol.

When I first started playing ice hockey I didn’t wear knee pads. It only took 1 shot on the knee to change that!
Yeah, we forget how exposed the knees can be without those knee pads.
@@HotBranch That must be cool to have a custom fitted mask. And I agree - - we are not weird, we are finely tuned :)

I do the same with my laces - leave the foot a little looser and the ankle a little tighter. 10 sets of pads - - WOW!!! That is awesome!
Hello from Russia! I liked your comments about knees protection. I am surprised you do not use hockey socks above those. In KHL goalie will get 2 minutes penalty if he doesn't use them. And I like that the socks help your knees protection to stay on their place. Try it and you will see.
I get too warm when I wear hockey socks over my base-layer. And it is kind of weird, but when my legs are too warm, I get super distracted :)
@@goalietraining I see. But you can use kind of players use. Those are breathable :-)

I'm a goalie i play select its my first year its always a pain asking my mum to help with my pads. Im still kinda confused on how to put it on my self
Now you have to the one in reverse to show us how you take it all off again after a game!
Good idea ... most importantly, how to get it all to fit back in your bag after :)
I got my knee pads right after the knit pattern of my sock was tattooed onto the skin right above the knee cap.
ha ha - - yeah... that's gonna leave a mark! Only takes one of those shots to convince you of the value of knee pads.
Glad to give you a chuckle :)
That would be tough wearing glasses under your mask. I can't get my snaps on or off by myself at all - - I see NHL guys do it all the time and I wonder how they do it.
