In this video we take a look at profiling your skates and how it can effect your performance on the ice. When you buy a new pair of skates they come with a factory grind on the steel. It is recommended that you get them profiled before skating in them. The most common profiles are 7 foot 9 foot 11 foot and 13 foot. Most players go with a 9 foot radius.

Been playing hockey in Germany for 5 years, where even asking for a specific hollow is unusual. Came back to the States to buy skates, and the shop asked about both desired hollow and profile before the first sharpening. I almost cried.

I hear ya, Only one guy here that ever got my profile right, that was the best two years I ever skated. Had to replace the skates recently and the local shop not only can't get my profile right anymore, but they left a corner on them, I had to get a regrind. They ground one with a different angle than the other, another regrind, then they got one crooked, regrind number 3. Since then, I can now skate without taking myself out, but I'm just not comfortable on them, I try to tell them I want to lean forward more, they look at me like I'm from outer space. I have had it with my local shop, ready to airmail my skates to someone that knows what they are doing.

thats the reason why i love americans and canadian ... when u ask a person in north america with fairly long expirence . they are so passionate that they know every tiny detail about them even the smallest which other people can't see or even thought about that
I love when people take their job serious and love their work. I would be asking all these same questions and I'm sure this guy would do this all over again. He is sharing the craft. My man hanz at the shop got me standing right on the ice.....
Glen Sharpley was a Minnesota North Stars first round pick in 1976 and played for the green and gold in the late 70s to early 80s. He played center and was on the team which lost in the 1980 Stanley Cup finals to the New York Islanders. Love ya, Glen - from an old fan!

@@markel4745 I was a young teen and a big fan of the North Stars. After they lost to the Isles, I became a passive fan and still follow them. Proud of my fellow Minnesotans on the team these days!

I was in vapors for a long time which come factory stamped to a 9 foot. When I switched to supremes they were not the same and I thought I was crazy. Had them done to a 9 foot and haven't had any issues since. Great video! Wish I could use that pro shop seems really thorough.
Can't wait to see the next vid. I've ALWAYS been curious about profiling, but have never had the balls to do it, cause I don't want to mess up my stride, or turn, etc. Anyways, still stoked to see what you think with the 4 different profiles.
Thank you for posting these kind of videos. its really fun to watch these and learn new tips and tricks everyday. before this video i did not even know about heat molding or profiling. Ive always just picked the cheap ones that feels good on the leg and get just regular sharpening on them. You deserve more followers for sure best hockey channel for sure. I love your videos and they help me a lot. Just a few weeks ago I had old horrible skates. Now i got new skates and did everything you went over. I do better in my house league games now.

Played soccer my whole life, only experience playing hockey is some pond hockey growing up but this is absolutely amazing
Whenever I buy new skates they feel sooo long, like skis, hard to turn, but very fast and front back stability is great. Then I sharpen three or four times in the month and the rocker is back to my usual profile. Interesting to see how with cross cut profiling, the plane of the skate is at right angles compared to the plane of the grinder.

I'm about to purchase new skates for the first time ever. Always had used gear as a youth and my first and only pair as an adult. Learning a lot from these vids
When I first learned about profiling years ago my son (who wore Bauer Supremes at the time) always complained about his back hurting and when he would lose balance he’d often fall backwards. I’m lucky enough to have a guru shop like this nearby and went and discussed if there was anything they could do for him. The guy I dealt with was great. I don’t know if it still applies to Bauer’s current products but 5 years ago the skate guru told me they found Bauer to be the worst brand for blade consistency out of the box. He said they generally all had 9’ radius and they tended to be balanced towards the heel rather than neutral as they’re supposed to be out of the box and that’s what caused the back pain and balance issues my son was experiencing. Long story short they changed the radius to 10’, moved the balance point just past neutral to get him more on his toes. My son loved the change after his first skate, he skated noticeably better and he never had any issues ever again.

I've learned a lot about skate sharpening over the years. It's really a science. My daughter knows right away if I don't go to her regular guy with her profile (and it's goalie skstes). Great video.
Just ordered my DLC blades from Blade Tech Hockey, Quad 1 profile by Prosharp and 3/4 hollow. May go to a shallower hollow in the future. Thanks for all the great videos Jeremy, as it has helped me with my comeback to hockey for the first time in 18 years.

This is great, I've been using a dual lie profile 10/13 which makes a huge difference, only thing is now I need to drive the 5hours to get my skates sharpened by this legend :P good info bro
How do you fill this profile? Is it batter then single 10 or 9? Is it still manuvreable on the hills?

You are lucky to have a shop like this. Most shops I go I am actually surprised the guy doesn’t hurt himself pressing the power button on the machine or doesn’t cut himself just handling the skates.

Maybe you have a more recent vid on profiling but if not, you should do one on combination profiling... quad or triple... those are really relevant to 2018 and are game changers.

Thanks for all the work you do... was wondering if a 10U player would benefit from profiling or do you think he would be too young to realize the difference. He does know when his skates needs sharpening and he feels the difference between 1/2" and 3/8" edge. He also chatters a little on some of his hockey stops. For now he is playing defense and was thinking of bringing him back to 1/2" from 3/8" to see if that helps him out. We have no idea what is profile is, but going to check on his next sharpening.

I'd love to do some experimenting like that, but I wear Super Tacks with the Speedblade 4.0 holders, so it'd be a little more challenging than if I had Tuuk holders

I only learned this week that 5/8” is my most favorite sharpening ever. I used to always just throw my skates and say I need a sharpening please thank you. Lol now I gotta harass the poor guy about profiling.
I like 5/8 too. It's slower start as it doesn't have as much bite, but it's easier to catch up as it gives you speed as you glide
i've sharpened thousands of skates at a 'big box' store and we never did any profiling since we didn't have a jig for it. what we learned we learned at the store. I could do some really nice sharpens at whatever hollow depth you wanted.. but if you go in and ask the guy about profile and he doesn't answer as fast as Glenn here, go somewhere else for your profiling.

You can start on the first pair of skates but it's not a necessity. For newer players a big radius like the 13 will keep more steel on the ice and help a little with balance.

You would you go about finding a better profile to hopefully improve comfort/ agility? On a low budget that is, i snap blades and bend them quite alot so i spend enough on blades already, is it something worth messing with if ive just been skating on whatever its like from factory, and the most recent bent blade hasnt really made that much difference, id be happy to have some advice. I have been reading about combo and quad profiling. I am trying an 8/13, medium forward pitch. Love the 8' and medium forward. The 13', not so much. Next up, 8/11.
I also tried 100/50 FBV. Yuck! Back to the old standard, 1/2 ROH. I'm going to try the Sparx 1/2 Fire next. Do you have a video on the different kinds of sharpenings?
Thomas Scott i love the 100/75 fbv. It must suit my sharpen well. I guess its all preference. I also know they can be screwed up easy. My buddy does them for me, he did all the skates at the Vancouver winter olympics for the pros and does a great job with ours

A question, if I may. How often should I sharpen my skates? It seems to me like they're completely dull after about 4 90 minute training sessions. I'm an amateur hockey player, btw, using the Vapor X50 skates.

Hey, i have been using a pair of ice blades on my inline skate for a couple of months now. And today i just tried my friend's bauer hockey skates and the blades feel really great. It was easy to turn, sprint, stop and so on.
My question is would my inline skate ice blades feel just as good as my friend's hockey skates if i got them profiled?
I actually like my inline skate boots better because of the super comfortable liner even though they are really on the heavier side.
LS4 Steel that comes with the 1S is stock 10’ radius but like the guy said in the video, they make these in factories and they have no consistency at all so that’s why you should always have them profiled. I have 1S though and Bauer’s Steel is horrible, I broke it in half within a month so I switched to Black Stepsteel and won’t look back. There’s a profile you can get using Prosharp called Quad Zero where basically they can cut 4 separate radius points on your blade. (Back to front 14-12-9-6) it’s hard to find anyone that knows this style though :/
Check out skate rescue/no icing sports. They have a bunch of options.
Hey Jeremy, I had a question from a hockey parent and passed her this link concerning profiling, etc and in this video you say that Bauer sent you 4 sets of blades and you were going to test the different radius against each other and report back but I cannot seem to find the follow up video? Did u ever post it?

I use the Blademaster with the grinding wheel that swivels. I have never done a crosscut and wanted to know the disk on my machine will be dressed at 1/2 inch. How do I dress the disk for crosscutting?

Isn't the forward and backward lean also called rocking if I'm not mistaken? I always was more partial towards the forward rocking, pretty sure was the only one on the team to have it growing up. Started 1999 didn't get the skate rocking till u10s I think? Changed my whole defensive game for sure and for the better
What are his thoughts on the sparx sharpener?
Would weight be an contributing factor on what blade you should be getting?

I played hockey 20 years ago myself, for 14 years, I used a rare skate sharpening. And whatever the default profile was on Bauer Supreme 3000's. I recently bought new skates, Bauers, but I can't seem to find my skate sharpening, and profile. I am currently using 5/8ths sharpening, the blade sharpness feels ok, but I think my big issue is I can't find my skate profile from 20 years ago. I even called Bauer asking them what the default profile was on the Bauer 3000 supreme skates were. I never got a response.
I have a neutral profile right now, and I still cannot control my balance or get the feel I had when I last played. The only thing I know for sure I cannot use a forward lean. Right now feels like I'm struggling to balance myself like I'm falling foward.
Would a reverse lean help me in this regard?
