As a guy who sharpens skates, you can now see why it takes more than 5 minutes to sharpen a pair! The worst customers are the ones who don't understand why they have to wait 25 minutes when there are "only" 3 pair ahead of them. It takes time to do a good job, I can rush yours if you want.
The worst is when we get people who go crazy if you stone a black blade or shiny blade, no, you don’t have to use a stone, but for performance, it helps, but all it is is paint, I’m using black steel and it’s coming off just with pucks and other people skates hitting them
@@goprop.o.v4495 Ummmmm no. You actually shouldn't be stoning black steel or the shiny steel. Black steel is carbon coated which means you don't need to stone it after sharpening or whenever and you shouldn't be sharpening them as much because of the carbon coat. The only reason to stone a skate is to get rid of nicks making the blade face outward. So if a black steel blade is doing that you should probably just get it sharpen again. I went from sharpening my skates every 5 games with black steel to every 3 with regular steel
A Pags I’ve talked to both CCM and Bauer reps, they said that you can do either or, it’s all personal preference. I’ve tried it without stoning, and did not like it, I could care less about the coating coming off the bottom, it’s going to come off no matter what
@@goprop.o.v4495 Depends on if you mean stoning with a actual stone, I work at a store sharpening blades and the bauer rep recommended I use a leather belt or block of wood to hone the blacksteel or the shiny coated blades like step steel
As someone who picks up a few shifts a week at a hockey shop, learning and becoming consistent is the hardest part of sharpening. It truly is an art, something the people who try to rush you to do their skates faster don't understand. Take your time, learn the craft, skating on your own sharpening is amazing.

Good technique demo. It really does not take long to get the hang of it. However, setting up the holder and learning how to adjust it is probably the most important skill. If the blade is not centered on and perpendicular to the stone, perfectly parallel to the table, you need to adjust the holder. I have a Wissota at home. The freedom of not being at the mercy of the skate shops has been a great relief.
Marco was my equipment guy back in the 90's.... He profiled my blades, side-wall stitched the boots, re-palmed my gloves, replaced broken toe-caps....ect..ect... His skill is what kept me playing in top form... I have never found anyone who could replace him.....
I know Marco too and have gotten some equipment adjustments done by him. Not only is he a salt-of-the-earth guy (just as a person), but he is definitely one of the best, if not *the* best at what he does.
You SHOULD be hard on them for mangling your steel. This is a skater's most important device. Anyone sharpening a blade should be meticulous, whether it's their first pair or 1000th pair.
Back in the 80s when I used to live in Detroit I met a guy who used to sharpen ice skates for the Detroit Red Wings he had a state-of-the-art machine in his basement and he used to sharpen skates for the team back in the day I was blown away to have such a talent sharpening my skates and let me tell you he did a fantastic job they were not over sharpened they had just the right amount of edge in my opinion it takes skill to sharpen skates properly I really enjoyed listening to this old guy of some of his stories back in the day while he's sharpen my skates perfectly
I moved cities a while ago, and got my skates sharpened at the new rink, could never understand why my standard cut always felt rougher. than when i got them done at the old shop, found out why. the new shop certainly doesnt take this much time and care into sharpening a pair of skates, very good video, I want to learn to sharpen my own.
I bought a wissota skate sharpener a few years ago plus worked part time at the local hockey rink so was shown how to sharpen skates. Now I sharpen skates for all my buddies at home.
As a well respected skate sharpener in my area I appreciate when people notice a good sharpen. It also bugs me when people come in 3 minutes before a game expecting their skates to be ready in 30 seconds.
Man, I wish we had a good sharpener in my city: the only one we had is not available at the moment, and I've been skating on dull blades for weeks now, sliding out in every corner

I learned to sharpen at 16 on a 3 wheel Blademaster and love being able to sharpen my own skates; but I make my passes going forwards and backwards, I keep the blade on the wheel and go back and forth normally a total of 6-8 passes then stone and done.
I sharpened hundreds of pairs of skates at several ice rinks in the D.C. area and it is hard to find good sharpener. I used a similiar sharpener to this here, only the horizontal and cross wheel were right next to each other. One thing I learned quickly was to keep everything clean, clean, clean. Waxing the deck, keep the dust off the pad of the skate holding jig and deck, made things slide so much more easily and made the cut so smooth. Those 'protective' glass guards look like a pain in the keester, making it much harder to eyeball the edge being cut, and harder to get close to the jig and steady it by getting it closer to your body. You can see when they put the jig down, it does not slide easily. Probably too much dirt on the pad and deck, and that will eventually wear away the deck in front of the stone. And cross cutting every time you sharpen cuts down the life of expensive blades badly, and changes the arc, especially if they are figure skates that can cost several hundred dollars just for the blades. I am also a big believer in stoning the edges carefully. Thats all I have to say.
Alot of hockey shops do an unecessary amount of passes so that the steel wears down quicker and they can sell more blades. If you get your skates sharpened regularly 3-5 passes per skate should do.

So just a quick question. Maybe you should make a video of questions asked by your UA-cam comments. are you gonna do anymore player interviews? Another question is what are the workings & paths you have to go through to meet the players or equipment managers to interview? Just a thought seeing how you're very charming and charismatic.

5-7 passes on the cross grind? Might as well get a new blade while you’re at it 😂😂😂 And going all the way to the end of the toe too! I’m having a panic attack!
simeoin Leenir you really don’t need to do more than 4 max, all the cross grind does is make a new surface to sharpen, when you get new blades, you only have to do them until the whole bottom has that “cross-grind” finish
GoPro P.O.V I was pretty surprised hearing that as well... 5-7 is rather extreme... and all at once too. If I have to go more than 3 I’ll switch to the other skate. A lot of sharpeners don’t realize the blades getting too hot will cause a lot of issues.
That was the first one. Marco sharpened the second. We didn’t have time to film me trying to sharpen the second skates. We had flight to catch the same day 😓
This is why you don't take your skates to some 16 year old kid at Canadian Tire. He will be worse than Chris...at least Chris cares and is trying to learn.

Profiles are done by machines. They have to be way too millimeter perfect to be done by hand.

The part that is not shown is all the critical calibration and leveling of the boot holder....
What is leveling? Is it to make both edge even or to center the passes on the blade?

I'd rather try to beat Chris Pronger one-on-one than to do this. Tried it once, and my blade looked like brass knuckles.

Why would this be better then a machine?
Half inch hollow??? That's knife sharp. How about 40 mm hollow with good glide and grip. That's something else. 12.5 mm no way for me.
Whoever last sharpened my skates fucking gave my edge a 1-2 degree roll inward (inside edge taller than outside), very awkward
