As someone who doesn’t take dmt and isn’t up on numerology or whatever they structure their songs around this is my favorite Tool song. I know hardcore fans flinch when they hear this but I just could never get into their other stuff. I can tell it’s deep, intricate, artsy stuff but it just isn’t for me. Sober has those dark guitars with the hard hitting drums and Maynard’s vocals are on point, that’s good enough for me.

I understand... Tool is not for everyone... I could not get into them like at all back in the day but as I explored music over the years I guess my tastes matured and they became number 1 to me. So I wouldn’t count them out if I were you... you may still truly get into their music in the future.

Anyways, they were some scene band in the Midwest (forget the exact state) and their album had a picture of some house on it that college kids rented and the band lived in at some point. The band developed a huge underground following and people went out of their way to go to that college, the house was rented out for like double the value of some poorly maintained college property and people went to go see the house all the time. That's some underground scene band, MJK from tool, a perfect circle, puscifer... Yeah, not a surprise fans go to see his old residence. Not like OP drove to another state or even another city, it's in his hometown. Strange would be driving/flying/etc from Grand Rapids all the way to Arizona in an attempt to try to meet the guy in person or something imo, checking out his old place that's only a short distance away is just something different to do for part of an afternoon.

I met Maynard backstage in 02 Biloxi coleseum. I was tearing down my kit and heard a voice making fun of Lars Ulrich. I yelled out something not knowing where it was going to, "The only drummer to grow less intricate over the years"....Laughter along with "Facts" ....Was heard. UPON grabbing my bass drum, and reaching to make sure the kick pedal was off , a hand came and said...Dude I got ya. It was maynard. The guy took the pedal off and put it in the sound hole. Pat me on the back and said "Dude killer show bro"...I would listen to them a bit while drinking with my buddies on side stage with the crew and was extremely blown away. Tool ....Holy shit. I respect and love both TOOL and NIRVANA but for different reasons and regardless whether either of them ripped off someone’s music or an art style for a music video. I think similar, inspired by ect are one thing. Sober's video was more çopy than similar. Using dead stuff, fetuses ect is also a bit different than making pipes with meat flowing through them. That's a one for one type thing. Aka a rip off. Either way though imitation is the best form of flattery.

  • @Blunt_Man
    @Blunt_Man 7 місяців тому +1

Kurt sounds so faded in that interview, like he just fixed in the bathroom, came out and lit a cigarette as he started talking... I'm not sure what he wanted, imitation is the highest form of flattery so really, it's just showing their appreciation for the stylistic choice used by others before them. Very few things in this world are truly original, they're all inspired by something and that inspiration shows in some way. As long as it's not a direct rip off, take it for what it is and appreciate the fact that someone would appreciate something themselves enough to imitate it in the first place. With something as complex as art, it's extremely difficult to see or hear something new that can't be compared to another thing that was made before it, try to find what's unique, not what isn't.

This song is about being Sober of religion, particularly Christianity. He sings as if in first person view of Jesus speaking. "I am just a worthless liar. I am just an imbecile. Trust in me and fall as well". Alot of early Tools message is antichristian like in the song Opiate where he uses the same exact technique of speaking in first person pretending to be Jesus; "My gods will speaks through me. we both want to rape you". then you have Eulogy where he said "Come down. get off your fuckin cross. we need the fucking space to nail the next fool martyr". So you get the idea. Earlier Tool was more focused on that subject.
Alot of people struggle to figure out Tool song meanings but really its either Antichristianity like the ones mentioned, A personal experience or joke like in Hooker with a penis, Rosetta Stoned, H, ect. ,some "New Age" ideology like the song 46&2, or its a straightforward song about self transformative occultism, which isnt as mysterious and spooky as it sounds; Like in Parabola, Stinkfist, Lateralus, Reflection, Intention, ect. Telling you to basically be a conscious being who doesnt worry about the illusions of pain and be grateful to be alive

    • @reubenbrooks3674

Sober isn't about christianity it's about someone who can only be creative when they are under the influence. H is about maynards son and what Maynard felt when he was born, 46 &2 is about evolving to the next step in human evolution and prison sex is about a person who was sexually interfered with and now that they are older they are doing the same thing to someone else that happened to them. So none of these songs have anything to do with christianity.

Well… I think you answered it yourself… EP is an EP… LP is usually referred to as an album. Many bands release an EP before they release a full length album and it’s that full length album that’s considered a “debut album”. I think it’s self explanatory. Why do some people find it necessary to address these things that are not worth discussing?

An E.P. by true definition would rule opiate out as being one. Over 25 minutes in length and over 4-5 songs. Also no need to be an AssHat. You are not better than me or anyone else who have opinions that differ from yours. Take a chill pill and debate like a real human.

I can't be the only one who is convinced that Kurt was joking when he talked about the Sober Video. I mean the guy was known to be a bit of a Troll so ofcourse he would start saying stuff like that when in reality he probably referenced the Brother Quay because he admired how good it was in replicating the Brothers Quay ( intentionally or not ). Idk maybe its just my subcounscious that doesn't wanna believe that Kurt would dislike something as cool as the Sober video but I guess we will never know. I do still believe tho that he was saying it in a joking manner, especially with the little Comment at the end coming from him when he says "they should get a slap on the wrist for that" , I mean cmon that really doesn't seem like he mean't it in a serios way. But who knows maybe I am wrong. Oh and also, nice Video man.

Could be could be... Initially I took it as I saw it... I thought he meant it... Even though there are plenty of interviews where Kurt messed around but there were also videos where he behaved normally and took things seriously... I think this is one of those interviews. But I see that many people in the comment section don't see it that way including yourself... so I am kinda on the fence on this one. Regardless if he was joking or not he's right... resemblance to brother's Q work is uncanny... And I don't think there's something necessarily wrong with that... it was a well executed video and I don't think you can qualify this as plagiarism or something like that... I am rambling, sorry. Basically I am fine with his comment and I think criticism in art is healthy as long as it's not fuelled with negativity jealousy. Glad you liked the video ;)

Okay, I'm gonna throw out some half-, maybe quarter-baked bullshit here so...get your salt out...
Love this song. Scares the fuck outta me. As it's supposed to. But I just noticed something in the lyrics and the song structure (I'm not a musician and have almost zero knowledge and absolutely no talent or skill -- remember?: get yer salt)...
Somebody else can figure out if this has any validity if they feel so inclined...
Listening to various Jethro Tull tracks the other day, it struck me (again) how intelligent, eloquent, bitter and angry a lot of the lyrics are. I noticed that the music and lyrics often emphasized each other in sometimes counterintuitive ways, amplifying each other and the overall effect (momentarily or throughout the tune). For instance, the lyric and vocal might be light and pretty as a medieval ballad but enmeshed in a nasty, heavy guitar-drum crunch; vice versa, Ian Anderson might snarl menacingly over the airiest, most ethereal acoustic flute and tinkling piano.
But it is still pierces and scrapes and jangles your feeling. Some of this is heightened by the frequent odd turn of phrase or counterintuitive and jarring juxtaposition of words or peculiar specific vocal emphasis on a word in a lyric phrase.
I could probably find helpful specific examples, but, sorry, I'm a fairly lazy asshole and I'm not getting paid for this. 😔
But there is a ruthless precision and specificity to the lyrics, their phrasing and their emphasis, along with the way the music and lyrics interplay and reinforce each other's strength and effects, that reminds me all the world of some of Jethro Tull's work...including (but not limited to) Cross-eyed Mary, Skating Away, Thick As A Brick, Aqualung, Locomotive Breath...

It was referring to the friend you mentioned briefly who was "creatively talented when under the influence" he apparently would obsessively whistle a melody or tune he was creating (under the influence) or working on, over and over driving someone to say "Jesus won't you fucking whistle something from the past that's done"!

Kurt was a walking fallacy. Don’t think his head was clear from his unfortunate heroin addiction. Nevertheless RIP Kurt. Heroin is the devil. If there’s one substance that should not exist is heroin. So many lives ruined.

Not really tools new album sucked ass even after 13 years what a embarrassment unfortunately.. I prefer to Listen to Clutch. Such a awesome kickass band who owns their own label and doesn't care about radio play and awards shows, but playing live to earn their living. A true rock band with a amazing vocals and epic riffs.
