  • There are slight differences depending on year and model, but in this video I go step by step to show how to replace the two main shifter cable bushings that deteriorate and fall apart, located directly under the shifter itself! Enjoy.
Side note: what I currently have installed on my driveline is:
    -DieselGeek sigma6 short shifter kit
(Which replaces the end links with adjustable billet aluminum ends)
-42 draft designs solid cable bracket bushings
-DieselGeek "cable savers" delrin bushings inside the shifter box located under the shifter itself.
-DieselGeek shifter shaft bushings and new OEM shaft spring which allows the shifter to pop back up like new when taking it out of reverse.
Everything collectively makes it so much easier to get in and out of reverse and shift through the gears. So whether your car is just worn badly and difficult to drive, or you love to race and need that accuracy back, visit the DieselGeek website and check out their products. By the way, if you're confused on exactly which bushings to order, simply email them! I did and they responded quick.

Hi mate thanks, I'm wondering what made you change these bushings, did you change all the other bushings in the shifter box above? I'm wondering as well there are a some videos on shimming the cable end bushings on the engine compartment ends, would this have the same effect as what you are doing now? I only ask as I don't have access to a ramp, I'm wondering if I do everything but these two bushings will I see a major improvement like you have? I could also shim my ball and put solid pin, shaft bearing e.t.c.

I did this on my 12 Beetle 5 speed from inside with no issues just a bit tedious. Super tight!! Best kits Dieselgeek! Question: my bottom of shifter has the same guide on the passenger side of the shifter (has 2 square prongs) that fell of just like yours looks in video. When its gone its rough because it slides back n forth in 1st & 2nd on the passenger side internal wall of the shift box. Where do i find this little plastic guide thing?

Are you talking about the piece I have in my hand at 6:50? If so, that piece gets replaced by the new bushing from DieselGeek

@@erickmelendez767 Not on the MKV and MK6 models. I believe it's only possible on the MK4 to do it from inside. You have to use a hole saw bit on a drill and drill a large hole in the side of the shifter base. DieselGeek has a video on it if you search youtube. Search "MK4 cable saver bushings" and you should be able to find it.

Seems so tedious to get better shifting. I don't have a shop or know anyone with a shop, no way in hell I'm dropping half of my exhaust then the heat shield in outside conditions.

Ah it's no big deal if you have tall enough jack stands
