    When you are so good at procrastinating, you watch videos on how to study

  • @andrewnaveen

    To quote the creator in this video:
    - Don't reward yourself with unhealthy habits.
    - Don't think Studying is a barrier for fun and comfort (I am so this person)
    Train your mind and body that, studying is making you a better person and promising better future.
    So well said Jimmy! Thank you for this wonderful and impactful video.

    I'm already a doctor, but still studying for exams since it never ends... (trying for the MCCQE1 this year). I admire the dedication you show. I wish I could have been like this when I was in medical school ;)

    After years of working on actual productivity solutions, and watching dozens of videos that unsuccessfully try to help this stuff, I can vouch that this is a genuinely excellent video. There is no magic bullet and this video covers a good range of the solutions.

    7:13 This is so true, I'm an engineering student but I'm afraid of physics ever since I got bad grades in one of my high school exams and kept thinking I wasn't good at it even though it was just because I didn't prepare enough.

    On your last tip about properly rewarding yourself ... I've been rewarding myself with games and I didn't realize that I was essentially making my brain despise studying and telling me that studying keeps me from having fun. Now that you brought it up - it makes so much sense!! Do you have any suggestions on how I can integrate a proper study/fun balance? I'm kind of lost on how to properly execute this! Love your video :)

      You could reward yourself by buying some stationaries (something you could afford and wouldn't strain your finances.)

    • @ameliarose47
      @ameliarose47 4 роки тому +6

      Maybe instead of rewarding yourself with being able to play games, you could reward yourself with getting new games? Obviously wouldn't be able to do it every single session (unless you're rich lol) but maybe after reaching a certain goal. Or maybe make the reward something that pairs well with playing games, like a special drink or snack to go with it. Or just switching up the reward every time so it's something new so your brain doesn't associate it with any one specific thing, just that you get some kind of random reward.

    • @gestucvolonor5069
      @gestucvolonor5069 4 роки тому +10

      Yeah what I find is that you just have to cut back on games regardless. Last month I was pulling 6 hour study days consistently for the entire month up until I resubbed to World of Warcraft. I tried to keep a balance and play 2 hours a day, but I wasn't strong enough I just spiraled out of control now this month I have a very hard time focusing even after I cancelled my sub. Your brain will always choose the fast and easy dopamine, instead of normal. TBF I always had a had time balancing these, so you might be different, but for me it's like training a dog. If you encourage a bad habit once, it will expect it the next time, so you just have to never encourage it.

    As someone who recently got a job in electrophysiology, there is a lot of pressure to motivate myself to study when away from the hospital. This video and others you made are very helpful because you take the time to explain the details on the how to versus a lot of the other channels don’t explain those important details to take concentrating and efficiently to the next level. You’re helping a lot of people with your videos. Thank you!

    Good advice on always trying to stimulate test conditions as much as you can, especially for those who always have test anxiety. If you do it long enough, the act of taking a test will feel normal, almost like the test day is just another normal day of reading and scribbling things.

    There is no magic formula. Studying is the same as the gym. Just stay consistent and your brain will adapt and get stronger. Go 3 hours a day for 1 week, then 3:30 the next, then 4 the next etc. Next thing you know you're able to study 8 hours a day, time permitting., But you're in a good spot when time is your issue instead of focus. Thinking you're going to just wake up and suddenly able to study for long periods of time is the same as going to the gym for the first time and trying to bench two plates. It's not happening. Just make a plan and then put the work in and the results will come.

    I would also suggest as a tip, buy lined crocs! They are so warm and prevent my whole body from getting cold. My desk is in a basement, it’s cold especially in Canadian winters. The crocs act like a barrier between the cold floor and my body. I used to go numb bc I was freezing, now I wear a sweater and some crocs.

    Thanks for pointing out the importance of the positive mindset in the study. I am procrastinating and watching your videos, because I am currently suffering from the anxiety caused by deadlines from three urgent tasks. I felt I am lazy and slow, but I even didn't have proper rest during the weekend. I am of course not lazy. I am important!!! So many things need my input, and I have been putting much longer working hours than the others in the team. I am the first author of this manuscript, which was earned by my hard work during the whole summer. It is just the last phase of putting pieces together. Just stop procrastinating. Stay tough and I will be stronger 💪

    When it comes to "stimulation curve," I find a more emotion focused strategy helpful for getting over procrastination since I consider it to be a maladaptive coping mechanism.
    Sometimes I follow Viktor Frankl's method of doing tasks that are the most unpleasant - things that cause dread, boredom, fear, anxiety or anger - first. Negative emotions are powerful motivators for seeking out distractions. Making a list and ranking items on it based on gut feeling alone is helpful for overcoming most rationalisations and often relief comes by surprisingly fast because progress towards personal goals feels good.
