"Level 7" basically says that rather than focusing on books themselves, we focus on Ideas we derive out of those books, and maintain a "hash" table with ideas as indices (for those of you who know what hash tables in computer science are).
It is definitely very powerful, yet, can be time consuming.
Yea the problem is that usually with steps 5 and 6 you have reached the comprehension and most likely remember it so you don't feel the need for more rivisitation. But sometimes taking time to reorganize stuff every year or some years it's useful and keeps you more sharp on the things you read. I'm thinking of applying this to things in engineering work where you have a process to follow and many formulas and references to add.

This is the first time I've heard of Notion but I'm already developing my first few pages and they look amazing. I was mostly convinced to try it thanks to your 7th level "consolidation of ideas" tip so thanks for that. Here's to organizing your thoughts and to lifelong learning!

Irony
We called it productive procrastination 😂
Me too. But I do watch on 2X speed 😂
Love how you are trying to remember everything in 50 shades of grey 0:50
I have a mild suspicion that Ali deliberately timed the appearance of the book so it'd match the title.
we must admit that the book selection in this video is unexceptional
I recently found your channel and I just cant stop listening till your video screen goes black. I can resonate so much. I only have one person in my circle who loves discussing these things and we bore everyone else in the group.
Just wanted to put down a couple of my thoughts which I am sure you will be able to resonate with
1. The more we get deeper into learning, the simplest things become like axioms in our head. On top of which we base our more complicated info on. This is why when experts explain things to beginners, they skip out on explaining the smaller bits cuz in their head its like an axiom, which people dont need explanation for.
2. How looking at people doing big things can make you think "I could have never thought of that" or "How on earth did he/she know, where to start, what to do", but not realizing the a lot of things that each one of us do, could seem like a big deal to others. So we all have our strengths, you just happen to figure out for the things you are naturally good at or passinate about.
The way you shared this in depth concept of remembering to the world even one's close person like family member, friend or work collegue do not bother to tell this is such detail. Thank you so much again for sharing your insight of taking notes in levels which in turns helps to remember in a great deal for the future version of oneself.
If I could only remember 20% of all the selfhelp books I ever read would be amazing haha
Yes, but (possibly implicit in what you write?) not just remember, but actively apply.
Scottlp2 yes I agree
Victor Regouin - Operation mastering life
Hey why do you forget the content of the books that you read ? I’m really interested in your opinion
Ivrakkk hey great question! One part of it is of course just human. We can’t remember everything. But maybe also because I not always read with my full attention to the book or maybe because I’m trying to get to much information in one day😅 and should try to learn in smaller steps a day lastly implement the things as you learn will help!
Sounds like you need to read "The only skill that matters" by Jonathan A. Levi ;)

Ali you are an absolute champ. Thanks for the notion template. That was exactly what I was looking for.
There is a a whole other level you have sort of overlooked: teaching others. Reading a book and then explaining it to others who have never seen it really helps to internalize it.
Couldn't agree more, which is why I enjoy book clubs so much. The more you discuss the contents of a book, the better you remember it and apply it.
As an added bonus, the person you're conversing with will also bring their own insight and interpretation, which can again be added learning 👌
It is also called feynman technique.
It's better to explain it to yourself in your head cuz it's faster and doesn't require anybody
@@genius6084 Saying it outloud makes it pass through your ear again, not only a thought. And interacting with another person forces you to think more deeply about it.
One setback, it takes time

Doesn't this apply to movies aswel?
I read one chapter/section/topic and then immediately after, I write down everything I remember from it. Sometimes this takes a while. The more you do this, the more your memory seems to expand. I can now remember almost everything from any given book, by recall. I used to passively absorb books, but now I can merely think of a book then take a mental journey through the chapters, recalling all the important points.
Do you reread books multiple times?
Really great content. Greating from Spain and yea, keep doing these videos
Great work! Thanks for the template, really appreciate it!!

Dear Ali....I hope this message greets you feeling 100% well, and that you are truly as healthy and happy as you wonderfully appear in your videos. I am so grateful to have discovered your channel, I find your tremendously positive outlook and profound insights to be the perfect prescription to combat my simultaneous bouts of optimism and procrastination. It is because of YOU that I am more focused on completing two heartfelt projects that have been joyfully percolating in my mind for a bit of time now (i.e. the curse of synchronic optimism and procrastination). Thank you so very much Ali, for all the altruistic kindness you willing share with the world, I hope you will soon receive your favorite wish. Yours sincerely, Lynda
I love the fact that you touched on something everyone of us have faced since childhood and always wanted to find an answer for. You talked about first mindless reading, then highlighting stuff, after which you stressed on importance of not only highlighting but collecting the highlights and combining it one article. And once done, next is to summarize the book using the highlights into 3 sentences. Don't mind the long comment, I am just trying to summarize your video and write it here so that remember 😁
You are amazing Ali, hats off to your love for learning and you have great comprehension skills. It's not easy. I feel so connected to you. You are an inspiration. God bless!
Hey, Bro, this is super inspirational! I am studying theology in my mature years with a view of being a minister and helping the world a little (humility plug). The thing about theology (the meaning of life and what everyone thinks it should be) is that there has been a lot written and it is an evolving discipline. Essentially, it is argument based; a truckload of stuff for a senior citizen to recall. Your video is EXACTLY what I needed. I'll need to study this and tailor it to my needs and personality, but THANK YOU so much for the inspiration.
God bless you in your ministry! I'll keep you in my prayers

I've been really thinking about "reading books" in a meaningful way and not just ticking off a certain number of books that I have read, where I remember practically nothing - and I do a couple of random searches, ask people - nothing works; then this morning: I think, must go through Ali Abdaal's channel and here it is, and uploaded only a week ago too. So incredibly happy. I got stuck on the writing summaries in a haphazard way - and now I can move forward (I think, hope)

yo this is amazing. i'd been thinking about how to remember everything I read for a long time, and just figured forgetting was inevitable because I couldn't imagine a way to keep track of everything when so much learning comes from so many different areas in life. I had toyed around with writing my takeaways on goodreads but sometimes you just don't want it publicized and there's no way to organize your reviews/thoughts especially when the information you want to include doesn't purely fit the definition of a "review."
i'm so excited to start experimenting with this. THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR SECRETS! I'm inspired :)

Bro i cant open the notion page , it says i dont have the permission, can you share the page in any possible way
Tbf you don't actually forget everything you read. Usually, if you have a trigger on a certain topic mentioned in the book you'll suddenly remember loads of it.
Only if the book contains a story and is not in article format. You won't ever remember that the average white rhino weighs 2300kg and is the fourth largest land animal according to the animal section, right after the plant section, on the wikipedia page "Largest organisms".
@@thesavantart8480 yeah I agree that narrative and story helps us remember things more than abstract things.
On the flip side if you have a serious interest in a specific topic your brain gets a lot more efficient.
I’m sure a zoologist would remember that a white rhino is 2300kg and fourth biggest organism instantly.
If you’re a pilot that information is useless to you so your brain discards it. You’d probably be able to remember plane facts pretty quickly though
@@hectorwearden202 You don't understand what I mean. A zoologist won't remember that the facts about a white rhino are on the wikipediapage Large organism, in the animal section that is right after the plantsection. All a zoologist will remember are the facts about the rhino but not the rest of the page or how he got that information. Also, a zoologist won't remember those facts instantly. The average working memory sucks and cannot recall information instantly after 1 glance, repetition is required in any way.
