Yes, I’m the same age and we grew up having change counted back to us so we just learned from that. A lot of employers in the retail field are making this a part of their interview process now

Oof I am sorry to hear that managers always seem to always be in a bad mood and impatient I worked at McDonalds as my first job and when someone who ordered food came to the first window to pay and the total was “blank” (idk how much it was tbh) and they had given me a certain amount and the register had done all the math for me and he gave me a quarter back so it could be a dollar back and I remember I was so embarrassed because I couldn’t do that kind of math in my head because at my time in school nobody had shown me how to do that and it was literally the most embarrassing thing ever.

Same, people don’t think it’s a real learning disability it can really effect you in your day to day life, especially when shopping or having to solve problems involving math I hope people give people more sympathy for people with dyscalculia and more understanding just like dyslexia
Just wanted to say. Great explanation. I'm 65 and started counting back change almost 60 years ago, selling Girl Guide biscuits. I've never been particularly confident doing maths in my head but have always found counting back to be easy - perhaps cos it's visual. So glad to see you passing it on to younger generations as it's such a useful skill to have. For anyone starting out selling, l wanted to pass on a couple of things l find useful. When you're "making change" count it into your own hand first, then to the customer - that way you've got a chance to check it while you're counting it to them. Also, get into the habit of putting the money they give you on the little ledge above the change drawer and only put it in the drawer after you've given them their change. Had so many occasions when someone thought they'd given me a larger denomination than they actually had and it's great to be able to point to it and prove they were mistaken. 😊
It’s wonderful that you have done this quick and very informative video. Judging from the comments, it’s truly a “lost art!” I worked on this with my first and second graders….just with change from a dollar…sad that schools don’t see it as important!
I was a cashier at a fast food place when I was 19 and a girl that was training me taught me this. She was about my age at the time too! It’s very simple!
I just got a gas station job as a part time job and it has been 26 years since I’ve done this. I’m watching as a refresher. Because it’s so easy to look at the screen and it tells you what to give back but what if there is an error and the screen just reads zero, I see this all the time. Then you have to read the receipt and put this method into practice. Its better to start practicing when the machine doesn’t malfunction or ourselves hit the wrong buttons lol

Perhaps add an example of when an item is 10.28 and they give you 20.25. A couple of Examples like that because people will often times do that to avoid Pennie’s or smaller change.

Some places don't allow you to. When I trained at QuikTrip they wouldn't let me. The computer doesn't tell you how much to give back. They force you to count back change this way. If you think about it, it can be easier sometimes because all you are doing is counting up to what they gave you. I struggled a lot with this at the beginning but I have learned overtime and it has gotten easier.
Just separate Change and dollars. Which there’s no reason for them to give you 40 cents, but, count from 10 to 40 cents- that gives them 30 cents back. Then count from 15 to 20= 5 dollars
In 1986 I was 16 and got a summer job at Burger King. I was scolded for not knowing how to count change. They simply don't teach PRACTICAL life skills in school.

You can if you want to. This is just a way to do it if you have trouble subtracting ingredients your head while trying to work
