      +Pomonoli NO insult taken. I just studied the maths for 2 years, until the examination, which I passed, having never even heard of an X squared, or algebra. Now, After the exam, I hadnt used or had reason to use maths until roughly 1 year ago when I saw some featured videos about them on the internet. I am not studying for 18 years, I had forgotten all I learned in my 50s. Great to get back to them, even if it is just for passing time, and keeping the old brain alive. Thank you for your reply.

    This is exactly the same as normal equation solving. You just used another notation. I don't really think it makes things any faster, you still have to know how to inverse the operations. You can solve all of them fast and without much effort using the "standard method".
    (5x - 8) / 3 = 4
    5x - 8 = 4 * 3
    5x = 4 * 3 + 8
    x = (4 * 3 + 8) / 5
    x = 4
    It's all just basic algebra.

    I really don't see the problem? You just need to bring both sides to a common denominator ( (3x+5):7 = 14:7 ) then just throw it away ( 3x+5 = 14 ) and you get the usual linear equation -> 3x = 14-5 -> 3x = 9 -> x = 9:3 -> x = 3
    This is very easy and takes no more than 5 sec to solve. Maybe in US you people were taught a different way of solving this?

      Yarubiks66 Just because it works doesn’t mean that _/9 = +_3, yes the solutions are +_ _/9 = +_3 but the square root of 9 is just only 3

    • @7osb
      @7osb 5 років тому

      x^2 = 9
      Take the square root of both sides
      | x | = 3
      Then,
      It’s either x = 3 or -x = 3
      As a shortcut, we do this :
      | x | = 3
      x = +_3
      So that’s why,
      x^2 = 9
      x = +_3
      There are missing steps as a shortcut, but _/9 is always 3, since the definition of _/ is the principle root

    ---------- = 2
    7
    7x2=3x+5
    14 = 3x+5
    14-5=3x

    x=3

    Isn't this "trick" just a variation of the usual way to solve those problems?
    To find x, you need to reverse the order of operations, that is the description of the problem. What new information is added here?
    It's really not my intention to be mean, I'm sure that it's helpful to someone who doesn't know how to solve those problems, but it doesn't add anything to those who do. Or did I miss something?

    • @ChilledfishStick
      @ChilledfishStick 9 років тому +3

    • @DHarri9977
      @DHarri9977 9 років тому +2

      ChilledfishStick I believe the point is many have been taught to do it the old way from left to right which obviously requires more steps hence the term shortcut and the trick of reversing the operators thus simplifying the equation.

    • @ChilledfishStick
      @ChilledfishStick 9 років тому +1

      Dharri I'm not sure it does take more steps. It is essencially (11*2+3)/5.

    • @DHarri9977

    • @monganni
      @monganni 9 років тому +1

      ChilledfishStick Well i think it's a fantastic trick. (revelatory in fact) Isn't the single most important thing; is that people learn from this, and not whether you think it's a 'good trick' or not? Of course if you're wise to the teachings here you won't be enamoured with the method. And yes, you did miss something - if somebody didn't know how to solve these types of equations, but after watching this video they now do, then this video has been a total success. Pedant!

Then I was left with 3x plus 5 = 14, so 3x = 14 minus 5 =9, so x = 3. Does this always work? Am I just slow and struggled too much, or is this it?
