I am a cashier and suck at counting change. When something is .28 or .50 it's easy but when it's .34 or .68 for example I get confused. I recently found a helpful way is whenever I have to add more than .10 and less than .25 I add .5 + .5 in my head (for the .10) and then use nickels and pennies for the remainder. However if something is 30 occasionally I'll just give them 3 dimes lol. I'm SO glad that probably 80% pay with card or tap to pay... However that's also why I suck at counting change.
Oh, no :( Just start at what the cost is and count up to the amount the customer gives you. Pennies are 1, nickels are 5, dimes 10, etc. EX: If they owe you $8.67 and they give you a $10. Start at 867, give the a penny, that's 868. Another penny, that's 869. Another penny, that's 870. Then, give a nickel, that makes 875, Then a quarter, that makes $9. Then $1 more makes the 10 they gave you.

When i was a cashier i wrote it down on back (or botton) of receipt. Unless its super obvious. Recently, I handed in a 75cents bottle redemption slip and also gave the guy a quarter and asked for a dollar back. Dude frozed completely and had no idea what to do.
😕You're not dumb! It just hasn't clicked yet. Basically, you start with the amount someone owes you. Then count UP from there to the amount they gave you. They owe you $4.98. Give a penny that makes $4.99, Give a penny, that makes $5.00.
When someone gives you 25 cents right as soon as your about to give them their change I get so confused I feel like I have to redo the whole thing in my head and I can’t cause I’m already flustered trying to hurry for them. It makes me feel so stupid when I know it’s really not that hard.
My manager always told me to finish the original transaction, and if they wanted to exchange small coins for large ones after that we could. That’s how scam artists get you. I got taken for $100 once because a guy kept hand ing me money wanting different change
I’m having trouble trying to understand a transaction where I work. The customers total was $6.11 and he gives me $7.00, I can’t understand why the change is only a dime and a penny ? Is there a way to update this video to count back with less change?
One advantage to using this old fashion method is the customer isn't trying to balance coins on top of paper. The coins go into the palm then the bills and receipt is grasped by the fingers.
Do you think if you can post more video's of money cuz im sl confused alot and i was just wondering if you could help me how to count change or give change back so it could make sense.

@momdoesstuff, actually, can you make a new video about how to give the cashier the total bill I'm actually confused of that because I get nervous going to the store all by myself and I don't know how much money do I give the cashier to buy something do you think can you make a video of that.
My 16 year old is applying for part time jobs and in the applications they are asking if they can count back change. She is very good in math and does it mentally but I'm trying to show her how to do it this way. It's easier when you have all the bills and coins you need lol
This’ll be harder for her because she’s able to do it mentally. Tell her to turn the high level thinker off and just count up starting with the amount owed and stopping with the amount given
Though I understand the concept I still hate it. 😂 My mind does not process this fast enough to make me feel assured I received correct change. Its backwards thinking for me.
Lol it’s hard to turn loose of “I should figure out how much change to give, and then count that out” in favor of “Count back the change and then figure out how much it was”

Good video, and well-explained, but I hate the entire concept. It might helpful for the cashier to count change the "old fashioned way" but I feel like I'm at an auction every time someone does this- there are too many numbers called out that I don't need to know. If I purchase something for $12.35 and I give you a $15, I Immediately know you should just give me $2.65. (The cashier should be able to do this math, too). I'd rather you just count out $2.65.
Lol, I agree! I had many of my high school students tell me that a part of their job interviews for cashier positions now included a test on being able to give change by counting up from the purchase price 🤷🏼♀️. So, I decided to help them out 😂
Fun fact: not everyone can just know that 15-12.35 is 2.65 so maybe you should be quiet and be happy I'm even attempting to give you the right amount of change instead of guessing. And if you can do it so much better than why don't you stand behind the register and do it.
@@abby-we5tb Yes, I think a lot of people don't realize that there's an added level of stress when you are working behind a counter and having to do mental subtraction is a lot harder than just counting up. Thanks!

Lol it’s hard to turn loose of “I should figure out how much change to give, and then count that out” in favor of “Count back the change and then figure out how much it was”
i still don't get it am i stupid?

The lady who holds an entire line up while digging in her purse for 2 pennies.
thanks mom
You are so welcome ☺️I hope it helped!
I’m trying so hard to learn.. but dude why DIDNT WE LEARN THIS IN SCHOOL now I’m 17 scared to be a cashier
Don't be scared! Everybody that knows this, had to learn this. Just get some change and practice. Here's a whole playlist. It gets easier, I promise! ua-cam.com/play/PLZocgsi1E8it3SvpxItOrl01DxgC-t8WS.html
Thanks!
this is exactly what schools these days don't teach instead we learning about angles and other stuff im embarrassed to say but im in 11th grade and is kinda good at math but under preassure when counthing cash it just seem impossible
Not a good counter top; can’t see coins on that background 😊
Sorry.
Bruhhh I over think things way to much and this just made me feel honestly very foolish 🥴
Lol, it’s just not something that gets taught anymore 🤷🏼♀️
Math is like that!!!! It's so obvious once it's obvious. It's not that "I'm so dumb I should have known this," it's "Oh! I just got smarter!" Then you want to practice a bit so it doesn't slip away...
Still makes no sense
Im sorry 😢
@@momdoesstuff lol its good. I just have to practice a lot before i get the hang of it.
alas still confusing. im a dmbfck whatever

A lost art
