It's very simple to do once you know it, yes, BUT understand that many of us were NOT taught this in school, at least in my school it wasn't. I had to look up how to do it online finally. I graduated high school in 2003 and I was somehow not made aware of this basic essential skill either from school or from parents/real world interactions. It's basically a subject that not really anyone talks about very much, and so therefore I was unintentionally ignorant on it for years and years. Back when I didn't know how to count change, I always saw cashiers that would count back change to me but I didn't understand what was going on. And when I would ask people about it, most would give arrogant responses like "what you don't know how to count?"which really ticked me off because that does NOT explain what the process is, and *_obviously_* I know how to count 1, 2, 3, etc. Nobody ever once simply told me that all you do is take the amount paid and count up to that amount from the price of the purchase to get the correct change.
I’ve received return change like this in my day & never quite understood how it was done. So now I know that I’m not the only one that would just trust that I was given back the correct change. Thank you for the simple easy to learn technique, will teach my homeschooled children. Stay blessed with much success!🙏🏽
This is the best analogy ever! It’s weird because I can do this hands on like you, but in my mind it’s not there. I need paper to subtract something like $20.00 and $17.63 but counting up is the easiest way when you do it in your mind!
This is awesome. I think every cashier who works at the fast food should know how to do this. I’m guilty myself, I wish back in high school they taught us useful stuff like this for example. 😂
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Thanks so much for making this so easy to comprehend. When they taught us in school I never really undslerstood that, and its affecting me in my adulthood. I'll be working at an amusement park selling tickets and merchandise and this....this is what I needed. Many thanks.
I strongly agree with you mate. Investment is the key to sustaining our financial longevity, and not just any investment but an investment with guaranteed return.
To earn more you are required to have a multiple diversified stream of income, which is why investment is an avenue of making more money once it's profitable.
Suppose their total is $10.58, but they give you a $20.58. How do you know what to give them back? Isn’t that so they could get a full dollar in return?
What a clear, concise job you did of teaching this! I've been cash handling so long I no longer think about it, really, I just do it. I was looking for an example of how to *teach* it to somebody, as I'm undertaking a project with my workplace to help teach underprivileged teens job skills, and you've helped me organize my thoughts beautifully for that task. Thank you!
note: always say what denomination the customer gave you ("out of ten" for example) and keep the bill visible yet out of customers reach until the customer gets their change. that way they can't claim they gave you a bigger bill and get more change than they're owed
I work as a cashier and sometimes it's just a matter of how tired I am and the attitude of the customer that determines how fast I give the change. I don't appreciate being yelled at or asked if i can count just because I'm taking more than two seconds to give the change.
Hey Schley Guy! I loved the video. My grandfather taught me how to count back change in this exact way and used to practice with me until I could do it in my sleep. My 15 year old son just got his first job and asked me about working a cash register and counting change. It'd been so long since I'd done it I needed a refresher and I found your video. So many memories came back to me in an instant of my grandfather teaching me. That again for the video and thanks for the memories. Kind regards, G
I worked as a cashier for Stop n Shop in New York for only a month. I was fired because my till was short. I was under so much pressure and anxiety and the lady that trained me on my third was SO apathetic towards me and started nearly shouting at me for forgetting how to use the different codes for the register i felt like i was about to have a nervous breakdown. It got so bad, a costumer said Hey lady can you give him a break, sweating and looks nervous so ease
Learning how to work a cash register is the sort of thing that should be taught in elementary school once the children have their numbers down. I was never taught this in school. Children should also learn other practical things related to math when they are old enough to understand like having a bank account, saving money, doing taxes, how a bank loan and a mortgage works. They should learn how math applies in everyday life: what multiplication, division, fractions and other math concepts are used for.
Love this! I've been doing exactly this for over 15 yrs now so it is just a habit. Also, the customer will never complain that you shorted them change.
Getting a job soon and was very worried when they said I'd have to do the register. I just wanted to be a stocker so I could just move things to the right place. I seriously didn't think it would be this easy! My brain just didn't compute that all I had to do was count up.
I just wanted to say your video was the ONLY video UA-cam that was easy to understand and straight to the point. Both my kids learned how to count back money from this video. THANKS,THANKS, AND THANKS AGAIN!!!
I'm on the hunt for a job and have started getting anxious about handling people's money incorrectly. My mother showed me this method and I've been happy ever since. Thank you for sharing this with everyone!
Kayla, thank you, but it's not a system of my invention. It's just the way it was always done in EVERY store before cash registers got so "smart"! ;-) You have a wise mom, be thankful for her!
Wow, my gen z mind was just blown 😂 So let’s say the total comes out to $6.56 and the customer gives me $10, all I have to do is ADD UP. 🤦🏾♀️ So get 4 pennies to equal 60, then 4 dimes to equal $7.00. Then 3 dollar bills to equal $10. The change I would give back to the customer is 3 dollar bills, 4 dimes, and 4 pennies. $3.44. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO
Oh my god, you are amazing! Thank you so much. This is like magic and I never thought it could be SO easy. I am terrible at math and this saved my life.

Thank you for this video. After working retail for a few years I was horrified to realized I'd began to rely on the register. This after making mental change for up to three people at once during bake sales growing up. Nobody's perfect and there are times when I enter the wrong number into my register and I'm setting out to make it sure I can figure out the change for the CORRECT number without grabbing for my calculator.
Thank you for the training tutorial about how to make correct change. With this video I can progress my skills and knowledge of making correct change and advance in a plethora of employment positions that encompass facilitating the operations of making correct change, valuable!
Thank you for teaching this old school/cool cashier technique to younger generation. I once was your McDonald's clerk example, having up to a hundred of small cash transactions an hour. Had to balance at day end and learned this fast/ accurate adding up cash technique.
Mr. Schley, I came across your video after my boss at my new job (for what it's worth, I work in a small business that repairs electronics and computers) had serious concerns about me mishandling change on my second day of employment. I found your video to be very insipiring in helping me to hopefully address my (and my boss's) concerns about the matter.
Mike, glad I could help. Often the best way to do something is the simplest way! ;-) If you work with electronic and computer repairs, you might drift into the ham radio hobby at some point. It's a VERY good hobby, and one which will bring you lots of pleasure, plus your knowledge of electronics will fit right in quite nicely.!

Round up the 63 cents (with 2 pennies ) to 65 add 10 cents that'll make it 75. a quarter will make it 18.00 then with the bills 19 and then 20.
This is awesome. I think every cashier who works at the fast food should know how to do this. I’m guilty myself, I wish back in high school they taught us useful stuff like this for example. 😂
They need to make a course called essential knowledge.
Investment is the key to sustaining our financial longevity, and not just any investment but an investment
with guaranteed return.
To earn more you are required to have a multiple diversified stream of income, which is why investment is an avenue of making more money once it's profitable.
Crypto currency is one strong means people are raising their financialstatus now, so when you think investment I recommend you make it an option
It's professionally recommended to trade your coins with experience brokers, who can help grow your coins while assisting you learning the trade

Crypto currency gradually being entrenched

good job in explaining thank you for that
Hi Tyrone, thank you, that's very gracious of you!
Emory Schley thank you I'm getting a job that doesn't have an electronic cash register so this was a big help
It's as easy as... well, counting! ;-)
Suppose their total is $10.58, but they give you a $20.58. How do you know what to give them back? Isn’t that so they could get a full dollar in return?
Thank you! I need to teach my team at work how to count back change. Your video will go into my training session!
Faith, Great! I wish you best luck with the class. I'm sure you'll do just fine with it.
Faith Borck I don’t even know how to count money
Kind regards,
G
all i can say is.... wow....... mind blown
Thank you, I appreciate it!
I am good at math, but my mind isn't a calculator and can't compute fast without pencil and paper.
Bless you, sir. I'm working my third seasonal retail job in 5 years and I come back to this vid again and again.
Love this! I've been doing exactly this for over 15 yrs now so it is just a habit. Also, the customer will never complain that you shorted them change.
U just saved my life I got a job at quik trip (big gas station chain ) and I had no clue thank you
How was the experience at Quicktrip
Getting a job soon and was very worried when they said I'd have to do the register. I just wanted to be a stocker so I could just move things to the right place. I seriously didn't think it would be this easy! My brain just didn't compute that all I had to do was count up.
I literally got an A in precalculus but I can’t give back change sometimes,,,,my mind fogs up.
This man talked with pure simplicity, I’m relived!
I just wanted to say your video was the ONLY video UA-cam that was easy to understand and straight to the point. Both my kids learned how to count back money from this video. THANKS,THANKS, AND THANKS AGAIN!!!
This man is so wholesome, thank you so much for this, it's easier this way.
I'm not very good at math but this is so helpful.
This actually helps a lot!!!! Counting of course, now I really wish I joined ASB in highs school or be taught something like this in school
I would've never have had this figured out untill you I am so appreciative of your video helping people like me
Wow, my gen z mind was just blown 😂 So let’s say the total comes out to $6.56 and the customer gives me $10, all I have to do is ADD UP.
I still don’t get it help me
6.56 4 pennies is 60 now 10 cents makes it 70. 5 cents makes it 75 cents now a quarter makes it $7.00 now with the bills count up to 8 9 10.
Oh my god, you are amazing! Thank you so much. This is like magic and I never thought it could be SO easy. I am terrible at math and this saved my life.
THIS LITERALLY SAVED MY LIFE, THANK YOU. I stress the heck out trying to figure out change, THANK YOU
I got a job interview at Quick Trip soon and this has taken a lot of weight off my shoulders. Thank you and hopefully this goes well!
Your video was very helpful! I am nervous about my first job but your video and tips gave me the courage that I can do it 😊! Thank you for the encouragement sir. I appreciate it!
I've literally never understood how to count change back until now. Thank you!
Rhiannon, you're quite welcome, I hope it helps you better understand the process!
i still don’t understand please help
@@gay4vivi294 same💔
@@gay4vivi294 Me either
You are a lifesaver! I used to get such anxiety practicing this in highschool when I volunteered at a local festival, I never thought of it this way (just counting up)! Thank you thank you thank you!! :)
I am a Cashier, I know basic math skills. This was very helpful. Since I want to advance my career as a Bank Teller. Thank you. I learned alot.
I don't carry cash with me to avoid problems. But I want to buy a fake money set and start learning how to count money . Having Dyscalculia sucks
Very sad news. Emory passed away in October 2021. Rest in peace Emory 🙏
You just made me feel better about getting myself a second job as cashier I hated cashier jobs and I have done it in the past but something had allways happen which had led to me being terminated. Will most definitely try this method
This was amazing! I tend to get confused when counting money. I will definitely use this method. Thanks!
I just started as a cashier and today I embarrassed myself so much because I completely blanked out while counting and the person who was bagging ended up counting it for me. I can do math and count perfectly fine I just completely blanked out
I feel like I’m slow I gave the wrong change twice today this is my first job as a cashier and it’s challenging I think I might quit 😔
Did you? The job I got interviewed for doesn't let us use a calculator, it's going to be very bad for me.
Martin Garcia nah I didn’t quit I actually got the hang of it and learned the cash register now it will take a while
I just started my first job Friday, but today they put me on cashier and the lady wasn't training me well so I use so confused and stressed. I kinda wanted to quit today lol, but it's just coins I have trouble and that's it :(
@@mackenzie6975 I’m 17 now and I have to get a job soon. But I deadass can’t count money at all. Idk what happen my brain forgot everything. Idk how I will ever get a job. Idk what to practice with because I don’t have money. This is embarrassing. My suicide thoughts just tell me to end it already.
@@user-qw4wt8xq4k I feel you 😭
Thank you, Sir, for showing us this basic skill! 😊
I knew how to count back change by the time I was 12. Thank you mom and dad for teaching me a lost art. My parents owned a pet shop and we had to know how to count back change even with a cash register. I still do it to this day when I am in that position to deal with money.
Gosh I wish I'd been taught this in high school, thank you so much you amazing human being.
Luckily my dad taught me this as a child and I'm pretty good at it now. I even had to help my car hop count my change back recently cause she was stressing and couldn't figure it out. But we got it.
loved video just started at a smoke shop. i was told i did not have to learn but am learning for the art of counting back proper change should not die
Thank you for the video sir! I’m going to implement this into my process at work.
thank u man I never got to learn it because my teachers didn’t like me but I’ll leave a like and subscribe to u man:)
I was havin a bad day and this helped me. I probably would have been better at math if I had a teacher like you. I wish practical math was taught in school and teachers were encouraging.
😅😅 i got to be honest it's a relief to know im not alone when it comes to struggling with math
Omg🤩 your awesome I'm starting a my first cashier job and was terrified only because I'm not good at math, But now I'm going into my first day of work with no problems. Thank you so much .
Thank you for this, it really helped me out!
Pascuala Elizabeth Encarnacion it helped me to is that pic really u
I worked at Starbucks 15 years ago and I almost had a panic attack at the cash register....haha....I felt so dumb....
Left the job
Got another job that required cash registering 10 years later and same thing happened hahah!!
I’m 39 years old and hadn’t worked a register since but now I’m asked to work a register again and this time I’m determined to get passed this ridiculous fear.....hahahaha
I completely relate. Really limits what jobs I feel calm enough to go for, so nice to feel am not alone:) Hope you overcame it :)
After watching 5 videos explaining it, I guess it finally clicked when I watch its slowly and someone who looks to have more experience :) thank you
Oni, thank you. I find if I don't understand something I've read (or watched), reading it again or watching it again and doing it over and over sometimes makes it clear. We don't all learn things at the same rate, but this is easy stuff. You'll do just great with it!
as someone whose multiple disabilities and cognitive impairments make all but the most basic math essentially impossible for me, thank you! thank you for giving me tools i can use that will make it easier tto get jobs that were inaccessible to me before!
I love this video! I I just got hired on at McDonald's, and I have never dealt with counting change back before, so this will help me! You explain the process very well. :)
Rochelle, you'll do just fine. It's as easy as... well, counting! ;-)
I work at fast food. Just trying to find the food the customer wants is hard enough (in the machine)
Omfg yes and they want you to be quick
BRO THANK YOU!! I WAS TRYING SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND AND I COULDNT YOU MADE IT SO SIMPLE I WAS THINKING WAY TOO HARD!!!
Life changing video. Thank you 😭💖
Wow! Thanks so much! We weren’t taught this way in school. You made it so simple! :)
It IS simple. I don't know why they don't teach stuff like this in school anymore. Makes no sense to me at all!
Now they're teaching common core math. This simple math problems of counting change would be turned into having to use 3 sheets of paper to figure out the answer using common core math. They're keeping us all dumbed down for a reason.
No math involved... only counting.
Math, being arithmetic. Adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing.
OK thanks
Thank you very much sir! I have dyscalculia and I’m starting my first job tomorrow and was very nervous.
This was so simple to understand. Thank you.
Awesome tip!
Thank you, I appreciate it!
It’s so embarrassing as a 18 year old that can’t even do this under pressure
Don't feel bad, bro. I'm 22, and can't do this under pressure as well.
Thanks so much!! I have been so nervous about my bank teller interview and this made me feel a lot better about it!!
Dallas, hopefully this video helped you some!
Wow, great method. Thank you 🙏🏽
good this helps me anxious a bit i honestly have a bit of counting issues sooo me counting and having my mind skip a number isn't easy still this video helps some of my fears cause I'm still bad at math
First, getting your counting down pat, then you should have no further trouble. Good luck!
