I know folks gripe about the cost, but I splurged on a Studio Display for my new Mac mini M2. I, too, love it so much! Stunning image, excellent sound from the monitor's internal speakers, I think the camera looks great. Had mine for about a week now and love it.

I have had my studio display since it released back in March and absolutely love it. The studio display has some faults that are worth noting but it's still a wonderful companion to my 14" MacBook pro. I had been using the LG ultrafine 5K for the past two years and while I would not generally recommend someone make that upgrade, if you have the money and want to spend it on a first party Apple Display, you won't be disappointed.

I’m LOVING my Studio Display! For me, aside from the gorgeous image quality, the best part of this display is how crisp the text is. The integration with my MBP is also appreciated. I’ve had the Studio Display for 5 days now and had to open my MBP (being used in clamshell mode) but one time because the BT Apple keyboard (2007 version) and Magic Mouse 2 failed to wake the display; for all I know it wasn’t the Display failing to wake but actually the MBP itself. Yes, the Studio Display is ridiculously expensive for a casual user like me, but boy is it a treat to look at and use. I couldn’t be happier. (Standard screen being used in a very bright room because nanotexture would introduce a little fuzziness; standard height, still too high for this 5 ft 1 inch body. Sigh)

Got an LG UltraFine 5K from the Apple Store in Summer 2020 for WFH, and still the best purchase ever. 5K (5120 x 2880), 27-inch with 218 PPI is the most pleasant monitor experience I’ve ever had.
Consider upgrading to the Apple Studio Display later this year when I settled down, depends on my needs and how I will design my setup.

Re Thunderbolt Cable Length, I had that problem with a Thunderbolt dock. Apparently there is a maximum length it can be before the length means it performs below advertised specs so most Thunderbolt things will always be sold with a short cable so they don't get hit with false advertising claims etc.

Love the displays I got 2 of them and use it for my home office. I also use them with windows pc (work provided - they use windows) and it works great! The only issue with using it with windows is that you cannot control brightness with it. You would need to control the brightness with a Mac computer and it will save the settings and carryover to the windows one when you plug it in.

Gonna maybe get this VESA mount option to do spreadsheets, stream sports, zoom meetings and do everything on a clean desk setup. looks really amazing and I’ll be using my M1 Macbook Pro more often to do GarageBand and iMovie on a bigger screen which is nice. That will get me using my Mac more often instead of using my iPad Pro snd not get anything done except reading books, streaming, and writing down notes. But iPad has so many apps to learn code to learning languages and has fast 5G for traveling. and I do travel a lot. Not sure to spend the cash on this display. Gonna see.

I do music and there’s no way the screen monitors can match the KRK speakers! The only thing that really matters is how important sound is for your set up. If the monitor is good enough, then yes, declutter your desk! Also, It’s too bad iPad does not use the entire screen’s real estate. Has that been rectified 8 months later with iOS 16?

Why would you expect tiny internal monitor speakers to sound as good as bookshelf style studio audio monitors? Although if you're not a music producer, you might find the EQ on the KRKs to be flat and lacking in bass, especially if you listen to electronic or hip hop music.

Love this video. I seriously don’t understand the hate that this display is getting. This is a display that’s right for a certain group of people and that group of people is me!

    • @Buttface1981
      @Buttface1981 2 роки тому +3

I would say the hate is because you're paying £1600 for a monitor that uses a 5 or 6 year old panel, with ntis increased by 100, that doesn't have a high refresh rate, or even a mount that as standard can adjust height. Non removable power cable, large bezels, no local dimming, and is only 27". For much less price you can get an MSI 4K, 144Hz, 32" monitor. Ok, it doesn't have the same P3 coverage, nor included webcam (although the studio monitors one is rubbish), or speakers, but for the money saved you could buy much better ones separately and still be saving money.

    • @volksbahn
      @volksbahn 2 роки тому

@@Buttface1981 very well said. Although a great disappointment, because the alternatives are not without their share of negatives. Even if Apple had kept the old panel at a lower price point, without the unnecessary bells and whistles, it could have served well and to a larger audience who so wanted to stay. Such heartless commerce is appalling coming from a trillion dollar enterprise.

  • @andrewcrossley2448

    Great video …very natural presentation.
Your enthusiasm for the screen is very clear. I have a nano finish, normal stand one still in the box whilst I have been working through the reviews. My son is a professional computer science guy and he said for my main use for a top monitor - photo and AV the new Studio monitor is the best option.
I am currently using my very reliable, colour calibrated, workhorse a 4K Dell P2715Q for my main screen and a good 27 in Dell QD second screen which I use for tracking notes, emails web browsing etc.
Most of my other gear is Apple (MBP13 M1 16/512 and MBP16 i9 16/1tb + a new iPhone 13 pro 512 as a brilliant content creation device). As yet, I only have a 10.5 iPad Pro as I love the speakers and format for on the go. So that may need an upgrade when the new iPad Pro comes out.
My challenge is I think that only the MBP16 will drive the Studio monitor and my Dell P2715Q as a pair.
I have a great Startech hub from my work to enable the MBP13 to drive 2 4K displays but I’m not sure this will work with the Studio to get the full functioning bells and whistles. Hence, I may need to ask for a new MBP14 to be able to drive 2 screens properly if one is a Studio. I can then get my work to reassign the MBP13 and Startech. The current MBP13 combo costs more than an MBP14 anyway.
So my main question is - do I break the seal and open the box or get 2 of the very new Dell U2723QEs which will also work well with my Apple gear and my Lenovo desktop has HDR, can daisy chain in 4K and has many connections.
On the speakers on the desk thing. Why not save space and get a pair of the brilliant Beyer DT 900 pro X open backed studio headphones for sound mixing? They are far more accurate with a flatter frequency response and deep bass, for sound mixing than your near field monitors.
Then use the Studio screen for standard consumption and video conferencing. Clean desk and better quality.
I hope you looked at all the hanging power cables and extension lead set up. Never compromise on this and get high quality circuit breaker hubs that sit on the floor. We don’t want you getting electrocuted…….
Have you had and success in the firmware upgrade? I understand this is important to do using an intel MBP which seems daft. There are many reported cases of new purchasers having to take their monitors into Apple shops when the firmware upgrade does not work with M series MBPs. That’s crazy as surely the latest gear should complement the collection.

Loved the video. Also love the monitor but three things that have made my decision to wait.......one which you covered, lacking iPad monitor support, two, lacking air play from other devices and lastly for me if it could at the very least support Apple TV without any device connected to it. If those three item would have been part of the platform it would have been ordered the day of the event. I truly feel these three items would have been so easy for apple to include in this monitor and if it was included I am confident people as myself who are on the fence would have pulled the pin and made the order! I’ve had an LG 5k2k for a few years now (it has some ghosting issues, but otherwise great) and since I got the new 14-inch MacBook Pro was wondering if I should make the jump too with the retina and colors. You pretty much answered all my questions and pretty sure I’m getting one now.
I do have one remaining question though. You mentioned you sometimes put the MacBook next to it. I know the MacBook screen has the miniLED, but do the colors look similar enough? I usually use my MacBook with the 5k2k above it in a stacked configuration (I’ll probably get VESA for this reason)
Totally appreciate this video and glad to see this type of content in addition to the lists!

1.) Great review and a beautiful monitor but... How do you Mac guys work with that tiny text all day? And yes, I already know that unlike a Windows PC the Mac cant resize text separately and overall display scaling in Mac settings results in a blurry disappointment.
2.) Thank you Chris for discussing monitor downsizing. I spend most of my time on a 34" wide monitor so going down to a 27" will be a challenge. If I can handle the "tiny text" of a 27" 5k Studio Display I may end up running dual side by side displays (which would still be cheaper than one Apple Pro XDR display).💰

I received my Apple Studio Display with the standard stand and the bottom of the monitor is not as low as my LG Ultrafine 5K display. My question is - at the lowest point of the stand, what is the measurement from the bottom of the monitor to your desktop? This info would help me decide whether to cancel my order of the Apple Studio Display with the height adjustable stand and return the one I have.

Apple industrial design is unparalleled. Too bad you have pay extra for ergonomic features that should have come as default. The absence of a detachable power cord is also a minus, considering that the previous Cinema Display line had it…

I liked mine at the time of getting it, but the studio display has blown it away.

I am using the MacBook Pro as well and connecting it to the Mac studio display, but I noticed that it doesn't recognize the non thunderbolt ports and only connects to view the MacBook screen through thunderbolt, is that the same case with you ?

I have 2 of them and debating sending one back. I agree on the height. Both of mine are just tilt and I'm 6'1, far too short and hurts my neck. There aren't many options out there for a quality and matching monitor stand to elevate them - but I suspect those will come soon.

Hello, congratulations! Do both sets of speakers work together?

@@SiddhantRana They do not. I asked Apple if that will be coming and they did not know. You also can't name them in the sound settings to know which is which (yet).

I much prefer the Huawei studio display as it is a third of the price super device capability with other huawei devices making sharing a snap. And little things like the plug, height adjuster, and yes price

Great video, thanks. How will all the built in technology work with the dual monitor setup? Will you get sound from both monitors, what about camera and microphone? Will each monitor have to be plugged into the host, taking up two ports on a MacBook Pro, or can the second monitor be plugged into the first and “extended“? If both monitors are plugged into a MacBook are you effectively changing on both ports? Really interested to see a dual setup.

I'm so used to my ultrawide monitor that going back to a 27-inch monitor isn't possible for me. I like having all the room to do things! But great video and happy for you!

Watching all these reviews of the new monitor I haven't heard anyone compare it to the high end BenQ monitors? They are not 5k but I thought they were very color accurate.

I am considering going ahead and purchasing the Apple Studio Display to use as a secondary monitor on my 27” iMac Late 2014 iMac 5K. Can you share which cable I would need to purchase to make this connection happen? Thank you in advance for your help!

When you attached the ipad to the monitor, you use it in some kind of clamshell mode using the magic keyboard, i try it but it doesn’t work, how do you do it? Great video btw!
