Obi, the large neutered male - Naps with me, sleeps on my wife's head.
Avalon - Naps alone or on my knee, sleeps with me.
Autumn - Naps on me, sleeps in a chair alone, or on my feet when in bed.
Lily - Naps and sleeps by herself. Very friendly, not a big fan of being on people.

When I am sitting in a chair. My cat likes to lay on the floor in between my feet. Lately during the night she has been snuggling up to me next to my side. For quite awhile during the night or in the morning in bed she would lay in between my legs. Those are some of the many ways she sleeps.

I have a 5 year old feral rescue Calico who will hang out with me on the bed until I turn the TV off, then goes and sleeps in a hoodie lined box that she likes. Considering she spent the first 5 months hiding, it's a vast improvement, but the last 3 years with her have shown me how spoiled I was with my Siamese who slept in the crook of my right arm for 22 years. Never take your cat for granted!

@@joandehnert1115when my cats were little last summer, first I mastered the art of leaning out of bed to add kibble to a bowl while barely opening my eyes (I am not a morning person!), before coming up with a routine where they have a small amount of “night biscuits” to snack on in the kitchen if they decide it’s mealtime when it’s actually still nighttime (or at least sleeptime!), which I’m thankful mostly works 😌
The few times I’ve actually thrown them out of my room while I’m trying to sleep have mostly been when they’ve had the pre-5am zoomies and have been engaged in scenes of utter madness and destruction, where they’re tearing the place up and chasing after each other, using my sleeping body as some kind of combined trampoline and wrestling ring.
It doesn’t usually bring me any peace though - they’re Maine Coons and simply can’t abide a closed door, and will then direct their energies to trying to break back in to the room (the nuttiest one has tried to dig his way under the door and also tried to *gnaw the doorframe*) and yelling at me about it 🙉 The lunatic once thoroughly chewed my pair of glasses in seeming retaliation for being banished, which has trained me to always put them away in a glasses case! (I think he thinks he’s a naughty puppy instead of a cat)

Both of our two cats sleep with me throughout different times of the day. Manny, who I rescued from the street as a 1-2 yr old, immediately bonded with me. When I had a a short term illness (several months) and I spent a lot of time in bed, he rarely left my side. He is definitely heat seeking, but also a cuddle. He will often come tell me when it's time to go to bed and runs in ahead of me. Once settled, he likes to climb between my top sheet and quilt. At other times, he snuggles up next to me in my armpit, puts his paws on my shoulder and lays his head down. My girl, Misha, from the SPCA, was stand off-shore, for almost a year, but loved sleeping on her bed on top of the bottom of my bed. She often sleeps during the day on my bed and even my pillow if I haven't yet made the bed. She curls up next to me on the couch, follows me around and almost always scratches at the bathroom door when I'm in there. She is very nocturnal.

We caught the stray cat my ex-neighbour had been feeding a year ago. He turned up injured one evening and very hungry. We got his leg fixed by our vet -- luckily it wasn't a fracture but a nasty abscess, and had him neutered and microchipped. We gave him a home. After about 4 weeks he started sleeping on my bed and sleeps on it along with several of my other cats (sometimes there's barely room for me). A few weeks ago we had quite a violent thunderstorm. It was obvious our former stray didn't like it - the rest of my cats just curled up and slept through it. Storm ended late afternoon but Oscar still looked nervous. As usual, he jumped on the bed at night but when I awoke in the morning he was cuddled right into me. He'll never be a lap cat but I know he trusts me and loves me in his own way. He will also lick me and give me nose boops now. He really is lovely and has turned from a frightened, bedraggled, skinny cat into a very handsome, very shiny black cat with gorgeous green eyes. He is a champion beggar of food and always comes looking for a tidbit which he will take ever so gently, a far cry from a cat who a year ago would have bitten your fingers off.

Our kitty sleeps with my wife, her Momma. We adopted her at about 1 year of age, so there wasn't truly a kitten stage for us. While she's friendly and playful with me, she seems to have bonded with my wife from Day 1. She follows her around, from room to room and wants her attention constantly. If her Momma is out of the house, she'll accept me as a 2nd place option and spend some time with me, but it's clear who her preferred human is :)

Guaranteed way to get your cat to hang out in your room? Try to get some work done. Get out your laptop, paperwork, something you actually need to get done = cat Magnet! 😸
Thanks for the video, you raised a lot of interesting points. My tuxedo Caspian has a habit of laying on my face when I've slept in and missed her breakfast time (it works). Our cat Chaton set up shop under my crib when I was a baby. My parents thought it was cute because it looked like he was guarding me. Pretty much every night they would look in on me and he would be in a breadbox position under my crib staring at the door. I'm the first born and was the first baby he was exposed to. When I was in elementary school I would wake up with him sleeping on my chest with his face in my face. He spread the love around though and basically took turns sleeping with everyone in my family. My parents found him as a kitten (who was apparently abandoned in our neighborhood) and he stuck around for 21 years.

My 4 cats join me when I go to bed. They may not stay the whole night, but when I first go to bed, they're with me.... purring me to sleep in surround sound. When my daughter was a newborn, one of my cats (she's very motherly and took over being a mom to an orphaned kitten I brought home) would sleep near my baby. It was as if she saw my daughter as being a human kitten. When my daughter was a toddler and would take naps during the day, that cat would sleep under my daughter's bed. As soon as my daughter woke up during a nap and got out of her bed, that cat would immediately run to come get me, to let me know Sara is out of bed. Having that cat was better than a baby monitor.

Funny that this topic be addressed now; my cat has started sleeping in my bed only about a week ago, after having been adopted around age 1 and having spent the past 18 months living in my apartment. I used to think that he was showing me deference and respect for my personal territory by staying off my bed (as it's one of the places most infused with my scent, and he also didn't care for lying on the sofa or on my desk chair.) But his behavior has changed somewhat gradually. For a year or so would only sleep on top of his cat tree in the living room. He then began to spend part of his nights closer to my bed, sleeping in the opposite corner of my room, overlooking me and enjoying the breeze from an open window. I later gave him his own little setup right next to my bed (a bathtowel on a stack of boxes) which he immediately adopted and he started spending entire nights next to me there, this time overlooking me from only a few inches. The latest evolution just happened from one day to the next. What might have triggered it is his having learned to stop fearing my bedspread (which I used to frighten him away with when he was being too agressive in his asking for playtime; sadly I'm now deprived of this method of shooing him away), and he will now go to sleep snuggling with me (snuggling with my head and forearm, really!), he'll spend some cozy time hidden under the bedspread, and I'll even find him lying on my bed on his own during the day!

I love the evolution of your relationship and character arc of your cat here! 😻
I’ve had my two cats for almost 18 months now as well, after getting them when they were 14 weeks old, and their preferred sleeping places seem to go through phases, almost in a rotation.
My bedroom and bed was central to their first moments and days in my home, and I think that’s why it’s always seemed like a safe place for them to spend time on or near, and they’ll very frequently sleep there during the day as well. I live in quite a small flat, but on their first night home I kept the door to the main open living/kitchen/etc space closed off so they were just in my bedroom and the little hallway. My bed was also the biggest and comfiest space to lounge on and play with them! When they’re scared (of noises/fireworks/storms/etc) they will converge to hide under the bed, even if they’ve been safely up on their cat tree etc, and I love that my bed is their safe space 🥰 (twice now I’ve found Harvey burrowed completely under the covers near my pillow when he’s been scared, which is SO cute and hilarious 😸)
Quite often they’ll settle down for the night before me - it’s 11:30pm right now and I’m sitting on the sofa, with one cat sleeping on the cabinet next to my desk opposite me (she loves to snooze there in the afternoon when I’m working too) and the other high up on top of the cushion atop the fridge (from when I was cooking dinner earlier and he wanted to be close by observing me 🧡).
They both will often be sleeping on their cat tree next to the sofa and window (a floor-to-ceiling one with two big sleeping platforms and two hammocks), or one of them in a cosy bed on the end of my desk, or on my desk chair (almost never the sofa though, even though I’d love for them to come and sit with me here!), or the small chair next to my sofa that I also use as a footstool. They seem to take it in turns to favour sleeping on the desk-bed/desk chair/the fridge/etc, and it’s fascinating to me to wonder what drives them to seek out each bed for a bit… they seem to establish a favourite set of spots, but then their patterns will change and they’ll switch… it’s like a game of musical chairs!
If they’ve already settled in when I go to bed, they’ll probably will stay there… at least temporarily! When I wake up in the morning I’ve usually got at least one cat sleeping at the bottom of the bed, and it feels very strange if I wake up and they’re both elsewhere, and it feels like I’ve been cheated out of my morning cuddles if I have to get up and they still haven’t made their way to my bed from wherever they’ve been sleeping. For a long time Nikita’s favourite nighttime spot was on a chair right next to the head of my bed, and when I woke up she’d mrrrp at me and come and lie on my chest and purr and go back to sleep 😻 she seemed to lose the habit during the summer when it was hot, so I’m wondering if I’ve got cooler weather morning wake-ups to look forward to again 😽
Early this morning I woke up VERY hot because Harvey had stretched out from his usual spot curled up at the bottom of the bed and was now diagonal and partially draped over me… there have been times when I’ve been sandwiched between two huge diagonal cats, and while I appreciate the love I don’t appreciate being pinned down and roasted in my sleep, then struggling to reposition myself in my bed at all! 😹 My favourite thing is when Harvey comes and sleeps curled up right next to my pillow - he loves to squish his face and ears right up against things for some reason, and he likes to wedge himself in as close to my pillow as he possibly can, while often resting his paws on my arm, and it’s the cutest thing 😻
I’ve got massively carried away writing this comment and I’m going to actually go to bed now instead of just talking about sleeping 😊

    • @occidentalist
      @occidentalist Рік тому

NIkita and Harvey seem adorable,@@EmmaVB82. It's wonderful that you managed to adopt two kittens simultaneously. Harvey seems to share his love of spreading out his front legs with my own little critter, who also happens to enjoy using just about anything for a pillow to press his head against when taking a nap, whether it's my wallet lying around, the edge of my keyboard or a box of tissues! (And right now he's napping on his terry cloth bathrobe that sits on my desk, with one paw streched out so as to touch my forearm 🧡)
All the cats I've had the pleasure to observe for a while seem to perform this rotation of their sleeping spots. It seems like a deep instinctual thing, perhaps to reduce the likelihood of being spotted by a predator, or maybe to mark different places with their scent.

Imprinting I think is the big one here.
We have three cats. One is very much my partner's, the second is my shadow and the third is fairly ambivalent/independent. Come bedtime, hers will be waiting at the bottom of the stairs going "well come on, then...!" I typically go to bed later but once there I can go "5... 4... 3..." before I get leapt on by my little girl.
They're attracted by warmth/safety/comfort/etc etc of course, but the number one reason is genuinely that you're they're favourite. It's a bond built up from interactions during the rest of the day.

We're two people and one cat in the household, and she tends to mix up where she sleeps. She always wants a nice cuddle session in bed (which starts with her laying on my spouse's chest and then occasionally moves to either the body pillow between us, or curled up on my hip), and after a bit hops down and gets food (we free feed with a puzzle feeder because that fits our situation best). Afterwards she will often sleep either on me, between us or between one of ours legs; under the bed or in her favourite hidey-hole: the top cabinets of the closets that she can climb up to.
She will also often join us (generally me) when I need a nap during the day, but whether she sleeps on the bed, under the bed or in the closet varies. But she likes to be close to us.

She sleeps with me nearly every night. She might start sleeping elsewhere but usually by morning I wake up to find her in my bed. Usually cuddled up beside me. If she doesn’t sleep with me she likes to curl up in the cubbies I have in my closet with my clothes. Usually she picks my underwear cubbie. I started keeping the closet doors open cuz her fav thing is to sleep on top of my underwear while knowing she can see me as well. If I forget to open the closet for her at night she’ll cry for me to open the doors. She’s a riot.

I’m surrounded by cats lol😂 It’s so hard to get up at night to pee, so I just lay there & hold it because I don’t want to interrupt my babies. Nugget, Freddy, Stachi & Sici have imprinted on me. Ziggy imprinted on both my husband & I. Bean, Muni & Flea imprinted on my daughter & Frankenstein imprinted on my father. ❤ Sending positive vibes to all of y’all who genuinely love your fur-babies & who take care of them the way they deserve to be.

Our boys don't seem to have too much of a preference. I go to bed before my husband most nights. It's about a 75% chance a cat will end up sleeping between my legs. . .which cat? It could be either. That one will /usually/ stay with me for most of the night. If neither of them are in bed with me when he comes to bed the slightly older one will usually join and again, who he sleeps with depends on the night. They both will sleep with either of us. The younger one is more likely to sleep elsewhere by choice. . .where in the house tends to change every few months.
And personally? I don't really care where they sleep so long as they feel safe and happy. If that means someone sleeps in a comfy chair overnight so be it. The sweetest moment with our younger lad are when he asks for sleepy cuddles and just, passes out next to me. I'm just happy they both feel safe and know they can come and go as they please. Are they more bonded to me? Maybe a little, but when I go to bed and no one joins me they're usually with my husband, and it doesn't really matter.

I recently found and brought home a five maybe six week old kitten that seems to have been abandoned by her mother. After being cleared to associat with my other cats by my vet she's now free to roam the house, and last night crawled up in bed and slept with me for the first time. So it was a good time to watch this video.
I got very lucky she's a total sweetie pie. We adore each other. And my other two cats like her very much.

My little Leo often sleeps with me. His usual preference is to lay near the foot of the bed where he can watch the door. My other cat, tiny Tamryn, usually sleeps by herself. I don't think it is any kind of hostility between the two cats because, during the day, they will usually sleep close to each other. For example, Leo curls up on the sofa in the living room while Tamryn curls up under the coffee table.

My bed is the most favorite spot of my fluffy tortie, she naps there on and off all day, especially if I put her favorite blanket up there. At night, I put her blanket on the floor next to my bed, because many nights I have a lot of trouble getting to sleep so I move/roll/tug the comforter constantly and I know it drives her crazy. I give it 10-15 mins tops before she's had enough and goes to her blanket on the floor. But if I'm particularly tired and can get to sleep easily, she will stay all or most of the night, only occasionally nearly rolling me off the bed as I move away from her blistering body heat in my sleep. 😅

  • @jljljljljljljljljljljljljljljl

With the weather now cooling down (U.S.), during the cold months, our tabby-tortie crawls under the layers (4 layers in mid-winter of flannel sheet, fleece blanket, bedspread, topped with another fleece blanket that has glow-in-the-dark cat paws all over it for that weighted blanket feel) and the tabby-tortie very tightly velcros herself to my chest, while a brown tabby sleeps on top of me outside the blankets, either on my chest, hip, thighs, or lower legs. My wife and I are both side sleepers, usually sleeping in spooning mode, so the tabby-tortie sleeps in between her and I, but pressed tightly to my chest, and the brown tabby always sleeps on top of me and never on my wife. This is simply because I crank out far more body heat than my wife, not because both cats like me more than my wife! So during cold months, I have two cats and one wife pressed up against me for my body warmth, making me feel really guilty for rolling over to sleep on my other side.
During the warm months, neither cat sleeps with us, again likely due to me putting out lots of (too much) body heat, and they dislike me rolling from one side to my other side, which I may do once or twice during the first 15-30 minutes of sleep. They have 18 different cat beds and mats around the house, so they both sleep on their own beds during summer.

Three of them I adopted at 3-6 months. The eldest is a retired barn cat that I adopted around a year old. He's the one that warms my heart the most since he was terrified of people when he was given to his foster. He hid from her for 6 weeks. Now, he's 15 pounds of brickhouse lap cat who's just recently picked up meowing to get attention. He was completely silent for the first several months with us, excepting the occasional hiss at his younger brothers during the introductions. Now, he chirps, trills, meows, and purrs all while crushing my soul back into my chest each night. 😊

I just lost my 17 year old, Pumpkin, last week. I'm still a wreck, of course. But altho I have 6 other cats (thru rescue), Pumpkin was the only one who slept with me even though everyone gets/got along fine. The night of the day Pumpkin passed, my 3 year old, Cricket (had for 1+ yr), claimed my room (and me) as if she had been waiting for her turn. She snuggled whereas that wasn't something she had done with me much before (too long unsocialized - I had assumed). She's not territorial, it so now it almost seems as if she didn't sleep on the bed out of respect for her elder. It's strange. I wish I could know her thoughts. Nevertheless, she's been a great comfort and we are forming a new bond that had been lacking. My dream is to get all 6 my cats in the bed - LOL - but 2 are semi-feral (TNR minus the R). Maybe some day though. 😻

I have a 8~9 month old little guy that I adopted in June from a foster parent. He definitely trusts me most of the other creatures in the house. He's also crazy. A real evil knievel type. (Jet-black, if that matters.) Mostly, he has chosen to sleep in places that are just comfortable to himself, not with anyone. I also had kept my bedroom door closed to him a lot because he gets the midnight crazies sometimes. But recently, I've kept my door open and he seems to have decided its okay to sleep with me by my legs, or in my computer chair. (He previously thought the things under the covers were bogies, to be played with.) He's kind of like a little teenager who wants to play all the time and not cuddle a lot, so I'm glad he decided to settle down with me at night sometimes.

I keep trying but inevitably have to lock him in his room and adjacent bath room with his litter box because once on the bed he proceeds to play bite my ankles and hands. He is most hyper at night. Okay, when I was a teenager, Mom brought home a young white male cat. It was a complete surprise, I love cats, but until that time my brother and I never believed that we would have a cat.
I made friends with the cat--never really came up with a name for him that night--and when it was time for us to go to bed, I figured he could sleep in the box he came home in--it was already lined with sheets for bedding--until we figured out something better (don't worry: we'd already figured out places for him to eat and use his catbox!)
I curled up in bed, and not five minutes later, the cat had jumped into bed with me. He wasn't quite a kitten anymore, but I was worried I'd roll over on him, and maybe hurt him, so I returned him to the box.
Not two minutes later, the cat was in bed with me again. I put him in the box again and laid down. The cat was back in my bed, even quicker than the last time.
Okay, then. I decided to return him to the box, and this time, folded the lid up over top of him so there was a large enough gap for air, but small enough that I figured he'd stay in the box. I laid down again.
Then, I watched as that determined cat forced his way through the gap, first, his head, and the he wiggled his body through the gap like a contortionist, and promptly jumped back in bed with me!
I said, "What the Hell, if you're going to work that hard, I guess you're staying up here!". And then we went to sleep.
Postscript: months later, when he was fully grown, I woke up in the middle of the night, and realized I _had_ rolled over the cat. I freaked out, imagining all kinds of horrors. I just found the cat sprawled out, asleep, purring intensely.
"Goofy Cat," I said, and went back to sleep.
