IDK if this would be something cats needs or humans need more, but I just realized that you have carpeting in your house. Does that not contribute to odors? After my wife died several years ago, I had all the carpeting in the house ripped out. It was incredibly disgusting and the house reeked prior to that. All the carpeting got replaced with water resistant laminate except for the stairs (for safety and traction). The reek disappeared overnight. If anyone peed outside the boxes or in corners somewhere it was soon evident and cleanup was fairly simple. So, I suppose my question would be ... at what point should one consider converting away from carpet, especially if one has gone "nose blind" to odors in one's own home?

Informative video. I use white vinegar for most cleaning chores. Baking soda can be used as a safe deodorizer. My two sisters eat mostly boiled chicken thighs. I make bone broth, which I pour on the meat. I add a powder supplement to the broth. They also eat raw ground beef and some wet cat food that is low in calcium and phosphorus. If you don't mind how it looks, carpeted car floor mats placed around the house make great scratching areas. Easy to move around and maintain.

I have litter robots and a couple of open litter boxes. One being a 30 gallon tote and another one is a regular high sided box. I knly have these due to 1 boy with elevator butt while peeing. The best litter I've ever used is sustainably yours cassava and corn litter . It was the best I've used for the litter robot, but it was like living at the beach. So much sand everywhere! The worst I've used is litter robot's own brand. It sticks to the liner of the robot. Just 2 of the more than 1 dozen litters I've tried. They all track pretty much the same, imo. The honeycomb litter mats have helped but only by about 30%. The thing that helps me the most is having a dedicated cordless vac and microfiber mop i keep in the closet of that room. I haven't tried tuft and paws litter as i don't think it would work in the litter robots. So far, the cat's pride unscented in the blue jug is the best since i can't use sustainably yours anymore.

I can totally confirm that what your cat eats plays a huge role in how stinky their waste is.
When Maxi first came to live with me I didn't know a lot about cat food and what he should be eating.
I fed him Sheba since it seemed like a good choice , and it was at that time.
Since then (couple years) his diet has under gone some changes. Took awhile but I got him eating freeze dried raw, rehydrated and dry.
His waste (#1 & #2) have almost no smell at all. In fact the only way I know he's done a #2 is because he tends to dig, like he's digging to China 😝

A question about routine. It could easily be different for cats, but with dogs, sometimes having a very predictable routine can be distressing in those unavoidable times when they must be disrupted. Having a more fluid range of times and order of activities have always led my dogs to be less distressed when, for instance, dinner is delayed or a walk or training/play times happen at different times or I get home later than usual. I get less anticipatory behaviors. I'm not talking about chaotic differences in what happens in a day, but not being ridged in when and in what order they occur. So, the question, are cats so different from dogs so this might not be good for them as well?

Do you have an advice on getting a cat more comfortable with getting into the carrier? I rescued an adult cat, she's 4 now and I've had her for 2 years. She's always been difficult to get into the carrier even with daily feedings in the carrier and leaving the carrier out at all times. I tried to desensitize her and make the carrier a part of her daily routine, but she always fights when I try to close the carrier, and often escapes. She doesn't like being picked up, so I can only get her in with food. I tried to use a towel to cover her and put into the carrier, but she has become afraid of towels because of it! I've stopped doing the towel method because it made her afraid of all large fabrics in my hands, like folding clothes or making the bed. Everytime I do manage to get her in the carrier, she's afraid of it all over again and we're back to square one.

I would like to address the question about the smell in the home. I have had 6 cats and a rabbit so I had 7 litter boxes to clean. And the rabbit pees a lot as they hay they eat is so dry they need to drink more. To make matters worse I live in an apartment where I am only allowed two animals. So I had to keep on top the dreaded smell. I switched my litter to Tractor Supply Horse Bedding, which is kiln dried pine pellets, in which a 40 pound bag, with tax, is just $7.49. and I bought two Litter Genie's extra large. I had the litter boxes separated into two rooms and put the the Litter Genie in the two rooms next to the litter boxes so when the cats pooped, I could conveniently put their poop in it. With the rabbit, I would have a clean extra litter box and I would just swap the clean litter box with the dirty one twice a day. For the cats, religiously, twice a day I would sift out the urine in the litter boxes and throw the the trash bag with the urine soaked pine pellets outside in the trash. Jackson Galaxy suggests not to wash the litter boxes all the time as it has their smell in it and if you clean the litter you will be fine.
With all that said, when my apartment managers would come and inspect the cats would hide and I would tell them that I was having an issue with one of my cats not making it to the litter box so I have extra plus I washed a couple of the boxes and put them in a closet. After everything was said and done, my apartment did not smell. I even asked friends and the managers if my apartment smelled like animals and everyone said no. My friends could not even believe I had so many animals in such a small place.
It sounds like a lot of work, but once you get into the habit of a routine it's quite easy and worth it to me as I am in animal rescue so I don't want the management to stop me from doing it.
Well, I hope my story helps and no one from my apartment management is in this group and sees this!!😂😂 Actually now, I only have two cats and a rabbit so all is good if they do see this. 😇🙂

The 4th cat is separated by a reinforced screen door, with obviously her own box. Both boxes are "extra large", I use conventional Tidy Cats. I scoop several times a day, and although it's not clumping litter I scoop out the entire wet spot as well as solids. Works for us.

@@kaygoldberg2962 I'd encourage you to adopt a mature cat, possibly a shy cat. They have a harder time getting adopted, and can just be the sweetest kitties. It's so much easier to introduce a kitten at a later date, although there are cats who are truly "one and done", meaning they won't accept even a kitten. If you are getting a kitten, I'd definitely get two. We did that the last time, and to see them wrestle and snuggle is just the best.
