My tip: whenever my cat wakes me up, I hug it tight and fall back asleep, which it doesn't like. So it learned not to wake me up because it only leads to cuddles.
Haha! That wouldn't work with mine, he loves cuddles :P I would sometimes give him this big hug and let him go and he'd sit there and look at me loudly purring like, yes? More? If he's not in the mood, he will walk away instead.
The automatic cat feeder has totally changed my relationship with my baby. Unfortunately, the kibble is loud when it hits the bowl at 7:30 AM so there’s that. It sounds like he hits the jackpot every morning. I just chuckle and roll over. Lol
I recently adopted a kitten maybe 4 weeks ago now and at first I tried letting him sleep in my room. I got him his own bed and he loved it. However around 2am-3am he would want to play and would hop on my bed and bite my hand (can you imagine the jump scare that gave me lmao) I tried training him to sleep the whole night but it wasn’t working so I moved his toys and bed to the living room and closed my room door. Surprisingly he has been a very good boy and does not meow or have a zoomie at night time. When I wake up at 7am to give him breakfast he greets me in the most adorable way 😭❤️ he eats his breakfast I play with him for half and hour to an hour and he takes a nap from 8am-10am
Kitty sleeps all day to store up the energy to "play" with us all night. No amount of evening play will settle him down. :o Hoping that like our other cats he will sleep more as he gets older.
Lol, hopefully. Our 8 year old cat did not, she still has kitten levels of energy. I have not been able to tire her out. Zoomies in the afternoon, 30 min playtime and then zoomies at night... no problem!
My cat used to wake me up so early in the morning, or randomly during the night, just for attention. I ended up getting earplugs and they're awesome! I would put them in when going to sleep and wouldn't hear her until I was waking up in the morning. But lately, these past few days, I've not worn them because she's sick and not meowing so I wake up just to check on her and comfort her. Hoping she'll be a better in a day or two.
Earplugs work but a little too well. They make me nervous because I don't like to not be aware of my surroundings in case of emergency, i.e., intruder, fire, natural disaster, one of my kids needs me, etc.
I was woke up at 2.00 this morning with one of my cats grooming the other. Normally that wouldn’t be too bad, but they were both sat on my weak and sore chest doing it. My 7 month old cats never sleep more than 14 hours a day. They play for about 3 hours in the evening and 7 hours in the morning. They are fed at 9.00 before bedtime and then at 5.00am for breakfast. I like them to comfortably have breakfast before my first nebuliser of the day. Since my wife had a stroke she can’t cope with closed doors, it’s just one of those unusual things that strokes affect. My clock is very much dictated by heavy medication, respiratory condition and pain.
Feeding time and a half hour play session before bed finally got my 4 month old kittens to sleep through the night, haven't heard a peep for at least 8 hours. I've had kittens before but it was a looooong time ago, I forgot how much energy they have 😂
I have had these 2 cats for 11 days. Male age 2 and Female age 3. It seems they become Gremlins after midnight. Anywhere from 3 am to 8 am is torture. Last night, they knocked over the trash can and it crashed into their food bowls, opened the kitchen cabinets, knocked over my humidifier, and broke a glass jar on a high shelf in the bathroom. My mini blinds are in jeopardy EVERY NIGHT. They are good as gold during the day. I play with them, feed them, and put away their toys at night. Nothing works. I'm afraid neighbors below me will complain. Help!
My cat sleeps with me at night and I love it. We have our little routine where she sits in the window for a bit and then comes in for some snugs. Jumps on the bed and begins to purr and then wants to come knead and some little sucky sucks at my chest like a kitten. I often will wake up at night when I’m sleeping on my stomach and she’s sleeping on my back or side. It’s comfy and I don’t even notice. When I have to do a stretch of nights though (usually once every 6 weeks), she runs around and growls for a bit when I come home in the morning. I knows cats hate their routine disturbed. But then she will sleep with me most of the day too.
@@robsummers8210I agree was like what does that mean? Nipple play time 😮not happening in my home . My cat recently had kittens I saw how they nursed 🫣😂😂😂
I used to have a senior cat that got up middle of night and meowed very loudly in living room. Almost a scream. My vet said could be dementia or high blood pressure. BP was checked to be ok. Perhaps you could do a video on feline dementia. Thanks
Hi Dianne, thanks for sharing your experience. A video on feline dementia sounds very interesting; I've taken note of it, and we'll consider it for a video soon.
The robot kibble feeder was super helpful for us. Just wish there was a similar dispenser for canned food. Oh wait, I'm an engineer, I can probably invent this.
My 5 months old kitten has zoomies after 1+ hour of hard play time in the evening. I have no idea how to dry her energy out. I get her to pant, but she lays down few seconds and she's ready again for the chase. It ends up that I'm so tired that I fall asleep at 10.00 pm (I used to be a nocturnal guy before I adopted her) so she comes to sleep with me at late night and we both wake up at 6.00 am. All in all I think SHE is training ME to live a healthier life xD
My cat isn't very good with time and taking no for an answer. I used to feed him after I woke up, which was around 6:30 or so. The result was he started to wake me up at 5 :| Ignoring him has never worked. I've had a strict rule of "when I'm in the bedroom, I don't get out no matter what he does", even going so far as to go back in when he's meowing as I get out. For the most part that has worked, but he has these phases now and then where he meows when I go to bed. Thankfully they stop quickly. So yes I totally ended up at tip 8 a long while ago already. And he now gets food at 9 every morning and there's no more waking me up. He gets it at 9, because he would often start meowing at the feeder. Also before COVID I would be out the door by then and so he learned not to associate me with his breakfast. My other cat mostly has the zoomies. Usually during the evening before bed. Yes she has the zoomies after half an hour of playtime. No she is not a kitten, she's 8. She just really loves playtime and running around and has lots of energy to burn.
I wake up my cat during the day so she’s sleepy at night. I have an electric granary which means she gets fed exactly same time every day. Hilarious she sits by it about 10 minutes early trying to figure out how to make the food come out.
I think my cats know when it’s my bed time. They come jump on the bed and get comfortable and cuddle with me and fall asleep. If my husband is upstairs working still one of them will seat up there and wait for him. I’m lucky that my kitties don’t have behavioral problems.
My cats are nocturnal, especially the male Tabby cat. The calico likes the day more but they both are wound up at night mostly probably because they sleep during the day when I'm at work.
Kitten is perfect! Lets me sleep and attacs me with a shower of affection when I open my eyes. At night he might pounce the guts out of his ceiling hangingdouble pendulum mouse, but he lets me sleep. Often he joins me sleeping at night without waking me up,k we do have a session of games in the evening. and he gets his fish and chips before bedtime.
Another great video! My cat doesn’t keep me up at night she just comes in very early in the morning making a racket….scratching, crying etc… Any suggestions??
Tip for cats with dementia: Get a nightlight or two! My old boy was miauing in the middle of the night because he was dissoriented. He found himself somewhere in the house and did not recognice the surroundings. Sometimes in the bathroom, sometimes in the livingroom, so he startet screaming for help every time he didn't know where he was. A nightlight in those areas helped a lot. At some point he just switched to staying the night in my bed with me. He would get confuced if we did not got to bed on time and demanded to pick him up to go sleep :)
I have a 17 yo with hyperthyroidism though meds are regulating that nicely. Just in the last few weeks she literally drapes her body across my side when I’m laying on my side. Or if I’m on my back she’s right up on my breasts! Wondering if she’s cold or is getting arthritis and in pain? I’d love videos on geriatric cats. Thanks
This is a good question! She may very well be trying to get some warmth from your body, which is typical among older kitties. We'll keep this question in mind for future videos.
So I have a one year old cat so still very active and playful and he’s fine until about 4:50-5:00 in the morning and then we will just meow constantly and start messing and making noise with things such as cupboard and ornaments. Stuff he knows he’s not allowed to do and doesn’t bother about during the day. He doesn’t want affection he will just run away. All this is litter, water and usual stuff he has access to is fresh and available. We have a 10 year old cat who’s sleeps during the night just fine but we are stumbed with the youngest. Any tips?
My daughter’s cat (18.5 yrs. old) howls loudly throughout the night and sometimes during the day. My daughter’s job takes her out of town frequently and friends and neighbors check in and care for her cat. What can we do to help to eliminate the howling so she can get her sleep?

Hello Dr. Sarah, I wonder if you could do a video about cats vomiting at night please? One of mine is prone to this. I think I have narrowed it down to a behavioural issue. I find that if he wakes up in the early morning and is unable to come and see me, I will be greeted by an unpleasant pile on the carpet in the morning. Now, as soon as I hear him whining or bustling about I let him out and the vomiting has stopped. But, I'd be grateful for any other information about this problem. Thank you.
My cat recently started development of Cushing's disease. She is on steroids for red blood disorder. I can't leave dry out or she becomes diabetic. Plus I tried a feeder to put wet into and the other cat tore lid off. I even secured it with Velcro. I use sounds on my phone (fan or airplane noise). I can't lock her out because she has anxiety and is extremely vocal. I can get her to play because steroids have rendered her sluggish and not interested. I'd do anything for 6-7 hours of sleep 💤
Hi Lee, thank you for the request. Dr. Sarah did write an article on this, so this would be a natural one to adapt to video. We'll consider it. allaboutcats.com/when-to-euthanize-a-cat
I'm the other side where my cat now doesn't come curl up too close to me because I always have to get up for the bathroom through the night (very annoying!). I've only had a couple of times where she's walked up the length of my body because I was actually asleep for once when she wanted something!
For my 87 yo mothers 7 yr old Siamese mix, We are using purina proplan probiotics, Feliway optimum and one dose of gabapentin in his food at 10 pm until the first two products take effect. It’s been two and a half months and he is still not letting her sleep more than 2 hours at night. Getting him to eat gabapentin sandwich from my hand used to be a trick (mashed in a chicken pill cover and stuck between two treats) but he isn’t interested any more. Now we dissolve it at 10 pm in his canned food Chicken Fancy Feast with gravy and “hope” he eats it. Do you have any ideas for hiding the gabapentin so he will eat it before going to bed? Thank you!
I'm keeping my cat out of my bedroom at night but I hear him meowing 😢 and it breaks my heart... I'm wondering if I'm hurting his feelings...😢 Does it harm my kitten? Is it wrong?
Im watching this because i was curious and so far im glad my two kittens sleep the whole night lol Their first couple months from 2-4 months old that i had them they had the zoomies at 3 till 4am Im actually not sure what ended up changing that but ever since then they have their zoomies/craziness around 8am instead which doent bug me because im awake already by then lol i rescued them when they were 3 weeks old and actually even then they slept the whole night but right at 8am thats when they wanted to be bottle fed lol then now that they’re 5 months old they sleep the whole night again Hopefully it stays that way but then again they do this on their own lol
We don't let our cat sleep with us; with this cat it doesn't seem to be an issue however for our previous cat she would claw at the door. We resorted to "SSScat" - it is a can of pressurized air with a motion detector. It got to the point I just had to set the can out and didn't have to turn it on and she stayed away from the door. Yes I felt bad but I wasn't getting woken up.
I don't have this problem. My cat has a better sleep schedule than me lmao. She goes to sleep around 11pm and wakes up around 5am. I go to sleep when she wakes up 🤧
I had a cat sleep with me for seven years, she never caused any problems. My rabbits and guinea pigs are the ones that kept me up all night. If it’s a problem then they need their own bedroom to sleep in away from their owners room. Problem solved.
Our little Tortoiseshell sleeps deeply all day, and is up all night....and begins HOWLING like she's got her tail caught in the refrigerator door at one....and two...and three...etc. She's deaf as a stump, and perhaps that explains part of it. Not knowing that I should ignore her I've gotten up a various times, and she runs to her dish and really wants me to stand there and watch her eat. We got an auto feeder, no change. She's a "move in" from the patio. Had been coming for breakfast and dinner for months and when our older cat sickened and died, we let her move in, about two months ago. Any advice will be welcomed. Thanks
Were having issues with our blind cat, her name is Luna, as i said she is blind and she just wont be quiet at night and we live in our hotel that is nearly constantly full of people, if we dont get her to quiet down at night our mom threatened to throw her out or put her down, im desperate at this point, i dont know what to do and i dont want to loose her.
Mine sleeps with me and I play with him . After a while, he just stays at my feet and when I go to sleep, he comes and curls up on my chest and sleeps quietly
Thank you yeah I got the little turkey treats and that’s what I did and I use my ear phones when he cut out cause siblings and I do play with them and do all of that you’re absolutely right it works and I don’t give them what they want and make them wait till I eat everything that then I’ll give them a treat when they sit quietly and wait and let me sleep yeah they’re doing really good but thank you so much good night I’m calling from phoenix Arizona to 1108
Mine yowls to wake the dead and scratches the door. He will not allow closed doors. Even if you go take a shower, he's out there yelling his head off. As I typed this, he looked at me and snorted. I never knew a cat who snorted when he's displeased until this one. I think we know who runs this house. 😆
Had this problem too. I now have a pressurized air can that is safe. They get a bit of air sprayed in their face, which they dislike. My cats now know that if there's a can, it's a no-go zone. So we can keep the bedroom door open and they don't go in and don't scratch the door.
I can't get mine to go out in the day. It scratches the door at night to go out. Which keeps me wake. Horrible. I can't let it out at night because there's coyotes. All the cats around here have disappeared.
Plus I have 2 kittens they keep playing with each other even I take them to bed n hug them they run away m keep jumping n I have just one room dnt know how to sleep as I have work next day it’s too hard for me to keep them with me dnt know what to do n make them sleep😢
I noticed skinny white flakes on my cats head when i pet him. Earlier it wasn't there. Please help as my place doesn't have experienced vets that can treat cats. Please
Nope he has never woke me up in the 14 yrs I've had him, so long as I'm in bed. In the recliner, ALL bets are off. LoL, can be hard to get a nap. I have always given him a snack before I go to bed. I go to bed very late cause I'm retired. 🤗 P. S. I really think he needs to be cloned.
Hahahahaha, keep MY cat out of the bedroom, hell, she'll boot me out and I'll end up sleeping on the sofa and the cat is stretched out on my side of the bed. You're talking about the queen of the house. The bank owns the house, I make the payments and my cat runs the place.
Cats are naturally active at night, sleep during the day. To try and change that to suit your lifestyle amounts to cruelty and animal abuse. Better for you and the cat, to have NO CAT.

Tip n2 is the most important. Feed your cat before YOU go to bed.
I hope these tips worked my husband and I are new parents to kittens

I can't lock her out because she has anxiety and is extremely vocal. I can get her to play because steroids have rendered her sluggish and not interested. I'd do anything for 6-7 hours of sleep 💤
Could you please do one losing cat knowing you have to put her asleep when in pain.
Hi, what if my cat can open doors?
Im watching this because i was curious and so far im glad my two kittens sleep the whole night lol
Their first couple months from 2-4 months old that i had them they had the zoomies at 3 till 4am
Im actually not sure what ended up changing that but ever since then they have their zoomies/craziness around 8am instead which doent bug me because im awake already by then lol i rescued them when they were 3 weeks old and actually even then they slept the whole night but right at 8am thats when they wanted to be bottle fed lol then now that they’re 5 months old they sleep the whole night again
Hopefully it stays that way but then again they do this on their own lol
Good to know
We don't let our cat sleep with us; with this cat it doesn't seem to be an issue however for our previous cat she would claw at the door. We resorted to "SSScat" - it is a can of pressurized air with a motion detector. It got to the point I just had to set the can out and didn't have to turn it on and she stayed away from the door. Yes I felt bad but I wasn't getting woken up.
Oh! If I tried locking Macka-Whacka out of the bedroom at night she'd eat the door down lol
I don't have this problem. My cat has a better sleep schedule than me lmao.
She goes to sleep around 11pm and wakes up around 5am. I go to sleep when she wakes up 🤧
I love your videos!
Thanks
Where I live, i have to keep my cat confined to my room. What could i do if i can’t keep her in a separate room?
Were having issues with our blind cat, her name is Luna, as i said she is blind and she just wont be quiet at night and we live in our hotel that is nearly constantly full of people, if we dont get her to quiet down at night our mom threatened to throw her out or put her down, im desperate at this point, i dont know what to do and i dont want to loose her.
Mine sleeps with me and I play with him . After a while, he just stays at my feet and when I go to sleep, he comes and curls up on my chest and sleeps quietly
Thank you yeah I got the little turkey treats and that’s what I did and I use my ear phones when he cut out cause siblings and I do play with them and do all of that you’re absolutely right it works and I don’t give them what they want and make them wait till I eat everything that then I’ll give them a treat when they sit quietly and wait and let me sleep yeah they’re doing really good but thank you so much good night I’m calling from phoenix Arizona to 1108
My cat pounds on my bedroom door if I close it…lol
Mine yowls to wake the dead and scratches the door. He will not allow closed doors. Even if you go take a shower, he's out there yelling his head off. As I typed this, he looked at me and snorted. I never knew a cat who snorted when he's displeased until this one. I think we know who runs this house. 😆
Had this problem too. I now have a pressurized air can that is safe. They get a bit of air sprayed in their face, which they dislike. My cats now know that if there's a can, it's a no-go zone. So we can keep the bedroom door open and they don't go in and don't scratch the door.
My cat sleep in the laundry room, he have his bedding in the laundry room, not cats sleeping with me
Mine IS about to bé 8 months and still doesn’t let me sleep, not even in the morning. I don’t know how else to tire her to get her to sleep at night
If I ignore my cat he goes after my bird cage so I can’t ignore that 😭
I can't get mine to go out in the day.
I did all these, nothing worked, my 6 mth old kitten just meowed all night, it was impossible to ignore
The problem is not getting them to sleep at night. The problem is getting them to budge when we want to roll over or rearrange the quilt. 🤦
Watching at midnight
I noticed skinny white flakes on my cats head when i pet him. Earlier it wasn't there. Please help as my place doesn't have experienced vets that can treat cats. Please
May a food allergy or needs more wet diet? Is the cat scratching it?
@@CandycaneBeyond not scratching as it was on his head. Can't see them now. I am only giving him wet food though
How to keep them awake if ur alone and your working 10 hrs a day it’s not possible to be with them and play when ur tired n exhausted from work
My kitten likes to attack my toes and hands if visible and pounce on my face multiple times a night, I haven’t had a proper sleep in 3 weeks
My cat can open doors (handle knobs) so not only does she get in but she wakes us up with every attempt to open the door... it's the worst...
Awww. I love the postscript. :)
Me watching this while my cat is sleeping with me.
Hahahahaha, keep MY cat out of the bedroom, hell, she'll boot me out and I'll end up sleeping on the sofa and the cat is stretched out on my side of the bed. You're talking about the queen of the house. The bank owns the house, I make the payments and my cat runs the place.
Ive ignored my cat for 3 days hes still yelling
Am ignoring him right now lol
I struggle with my cat suckling on my other cat i cant sleep iver the noise 😂
Why my kitten always licking me and make a grrr noise
My cat sleeps all day when I’m at work and wants to play all night . I wish I had a bigger apartment .
go out and walk, run the hallways!
My two cats always start fighting and want fed most of the night they have me up drives me crazy 😂
I live in a studio so preventing my cat from having access to my bedroom isn't an option 😔
Get a suitable size of cat tent. This works as I have the same issue when on holiday or in a caravan.
2024 watching this cause my cat still awake 10:06pm in Philippines 😂😅
Believe it or not, my cat doesn’t like meat very much.🤷♀️Not even raw fish. That’s crazy.😂But cats are like drill sergeants.😂
Don't snore.My cat hates it.
Do you exist?
A profound question!
Depends on the individual cat. Some cats sleep at night better than others. Ear plugs not a good idea..imagine an emergency or a fire!
I sleep with earplugs every night. No problem and can easily hear the fire alarm and anything else that is loud.
Cats are naturally active at night, sleep during the day. To try and change that to suit your lifestyle amounts to cruelty and animal abuse. Better for you and the cat, to have NO CAT.
you missed a few details, how to play properly with your cat, CRATE THE THING, START EARLY, TRAIN THEM TO SLEEP IN IT. FFS, Why does a cat need free reign in the entire house at night. tell me why....
She look scary 😨
I'm gonna try the ignoring tip and im being feeding it salmon and also it was a stray cat my mom rescued it its my now
And regular cat food
