We always learn great techniques on your channel, thanks for demonstrating this tool and showing how to use it. Side note: I would love if you can credit and/or link the singers / bands involved in your demonstrations, simply because I love listening to your mixes / masters to learn how to make better sound and further develop my ears! The “1176 consonant rounding” preset is funny! I use 1176 style comps on vocals a lot when I want a lot of attack, and I often have to automate some consonant volume because they jump out of the mix too much. Glad to know I’m not the only one 😂
The l1176 can get very spitty, but most of the time is because people don't clean their vocals before compression. Userful preset nontheless
@@mixbustv word! it’s funny that the secret to aggressive, in your face vocals.. is getting them clean as a whistle before you smash them haha. Vocal editing is still one of those things I’m practicing being extremely patient using a fine tooth comb. Your video on using Izotope RX to clean them was great! 🙏

With boost, have you tried a clipper like Flatline to chop off the boost? its a nice crunchy effect!

Like mentioned in the video, this works on the transient portion of the signal, deesser on the sound itself and its energy, they work well together, that's why the combo of this + soothe is pretty great

Use a pop screen when recording, use volume and (dynamic) eq automation for control in mixing

First, unless you're using a very aggressive and colored compressor PLUGIN and the harshness is caused by it

You mean as a dedicated mastering converter? I personally have an HEDD that I use to print for mastering, but motu converters are high end, in the end I mix with them (with outboard gear, so I'm not sure if you mean mix or mastering here, the first would be a given since I run over 32 channels of it)
@@mixbustv My workflow is mixing in the box (most) and mastering with the external equipment that I have. Dope Video.... Would you say Soothe does a better job than Spiff?
Very different application but I understand it might be difficult if your ears are not trained enough to know when to use one or the other: spiff is a transient designer, you use it when you have a spikey vocal, not spikey as dynamic, as in some consonants are hard (because of the singer, the mic, etc..), those are fast event's and you should control not the eq or the overall dynamic but the transient, you can have this problem with too detailed mics and too fast preamps. You use soothe for harsh (long events) sources, a little bit like a deesser but it's not only dynamic control like a deesser is more a mix between that and a spectral compressor
