I'm also careful if I have frequencies that are overlapping. Solo, the tracks can sound ok, but together they can add up certain frequencies. So the next step I do is side chain compression and EQ, then I analyze the whole thing on 2bus and I set it up to hit maximum -6.0dB. From there I can push it late on if I want.
I learn something every single time you speak! I would highly recommend everyone get a consultation with David because he helped me in multiple consultations and the information blew my mind and transformed the way I mix instantly. Well worth the investment! Keep shining man! 🙏
I've been a professional musician for over 47 years, and a studio owner for 20+ years. Although certified by Pro Tools, I've had no formal training. Just trial and error. This is by far "the BEST" instruction I've ever seen or heard regarding balancing a mix. Without a good/proper balance, a mix engineer will surely be fighting himself throughout the entire mixing process to get the tracks to to "play well" with each other.
I’m an artist and audio engineer from Toronto and this is my favourite channel ever! I enjoy all your videos they’re super helpful and fun to watch. Love you bro 🎶💯
Bro for many years m producing and i really got to a complete order of the mix casue of u!! no matter what ive learned on socials ths is by far the most helpful !! thanks man!!
I did a mix over the weekend in which was the first time I actually mixed into a compressor. My crest factor was ALOT closer than ever b4 and yet I still maintained all my transients!!! Thanks for all the good tools and advice brother!
What a great explanation! That information is gold for the people that are lerning. There is a reason why David is the best. Because he just fucking tell you what mixing is about. Congrats bro, your hard work and talent is incredible. God bless you
Great knowledge here. One thing: For people brand new to mixing, mixing into compression isn’t probably the best way to start. You need to get a good understanding of both compression *and* gain staging before you can effectively mix into mixbus comp… I always recommend for folks new to mixing, first learn to mix without anything on the mixbus. Then move on to mixing into compression once they understand the basics. Some hardcore old school engineers claim you should never mix into compression, but i’m not one of them. It can he helpful with rock mixes, EDM or other more full/aggressive styles. But you need to know what you’re doing first, to get good results.
Hey Gain Staging is not a trick but a necessity. But as I stated in the comments section of another video: "Certain Plugins especially analog emulations Plugins need to see a certain amount of level to hit their sweet spot as well, so to just use just the input trim only of a plugin for gain staging the rough mix in my opinion is ill advised." There is a reason for Clip Gain and Trim/Gain Plugins. There's Gain Staging within and between plugins that have to be considered.
If you think there is any difference between using the input gain of any plugin vs using a trim before them, rethink. This is digital. Also, sweet spot? This is exactly how to hit "the sweet spot", given the fact that 99% of the time the "sweet spot" on plugins is absolute BS. This is not analog.
Well if the emulation of analog gear doesn't have the sweet spot...why even make them or buy them. em·u·la·tion /ˌemyəˈlāSH(ə)n/ Learn to pronounce noun effort to match or surpass a person or achievement, typically by imitation. Just wanted to randomly come by and say thanks again, Ive only just started doing automation in mixes. Thanks to you. Mixing this last tune has been much easier. For years, was a nightmare trying to get static levels and wondering why certain things are too loud for certain parts trying to find the perfect balance for a set and forget. No longer. lol.
Thanks David! That comment you made about knowing which compressor to use to get a certain result on the mix bus..., detailing that would make a great video.
Well, the light really off on this one. I have been working to record live into the 2 bus. The SSL Big Six and the Fusion will soon be dialed in with this new found discipline. "All roads lead to the 2 bus." Thank you David, for the insight.
This is one the of the best "practical " Tips video about Gain Staging. Not for technical stand point but also how to apply in real life mix situation. Thanks for your kind effort to make this video
This is crazy because a lot of guys say don't use a Compressor on a Masterbus! But I nethertheleless do it, because its how you say, I have the level and I can fit what I want into this! I like it!
This is interesting. I gain stage, set up my rough mix with the faders then put on the bus compressor. But with the way you set up the rough mix and gain stage at the same time, I can have even more precision with the faders.
Tell me about it. Been “making” music as a hobby for over 10 years now, tried to mix now and then, but mostly sent to engineers, now I hope that I can do it myself and this video was an eye-opener.
Amazing. Today I went to YT to find answers to questions like this, and here they are. The most important information that will help me a lot in the future is that when we adjust the instrument levels at the very beginning of mixing, it should actually stay that way, in terms of level-matching after eq and compression. By the way, even if I have been using the SSL native channel strip for a long time, I would like to hear your opinion about that plugin, especially the native SSL Bus comp. 2. I hope you will see this comment and make a review ... Kind regards Dave !!!
My man uses his API 2500 with identical settings to how I set it for most mixdowns. I never use the makeup gain either! The UAD one is killer and there's nothing quite like the stereo image with the linking/unlinking. Pulsar Mu is one of my next go-to compressors too!
Great video man. Short and to the point and i agree with everything you said. For people wondering, you can also do this with an IO for analog gear on your 2bus! Blessings my brother
You can make all the outputs same level using the normalize in audio suite. So every clip you have in the session has one output level. This is much faster than finding the level and subtracting them one by one.
You are a legend Dave this video and your channel works for any genre. I love rock/metal but I write darkwave electronic stuff. This has been helping me a lot 🤟🙏
No, it's digital, if anything would be the other way around. In analog you'd lower the signal to noise ratio or add whatever color. Digital gain is a simple math like 1+1=2. Not sure where you got that you'd lose information. Machines don't lose numbers randomly

Just bought this plugin, super psyched to use it. They have it on sale right now on the waves website.
What's the name of it?
Thanks David, I really like how you have wrapped up so many aspects very efficiently with this approach... very good
Simply the best channel for someone serious about mixing and mastering! Really useful, subtle and professional advice.

That song reminds me of early Prince! Great video as always David!
The initial balance is king
Thanks David.
Buying and starting to use analog gear while mixing is when I finally got gain staging ...because you have to, haha.
Same here, spend tons of time matching volumes on my 500 analog boxes, it's painful, but fun ;)
Exactly 😂😂😂
So you spent a fortune to learn the basics... smart.
Same bro. It took some time to learn no gain staging causes alot of clipping and distortion xd
You explained so well sir
Simply the best out there! This is gold

Jokes aside. You are building your own dojo with these slices of pedagogical work. Thank you, honestly.
David you definitely taught me the most of all the engineers on UA-cam. Your videos are always value!
11:20 I dig that "no makeup gain when setting the 2-bus compressor" approach !
I understood that gain staging could be a problem. Thanks for showing us an easy way to deal with it.
