I'm also careful if I have frequencies that are overlapping. Solo, the tracks can sound ok, but together they can add up certain frequencies. So the next step I do is side chain compression and EQ, then I analyze the whole thing on 2bus and I set it up to hit maximum -6.0dB. From there I can push it late on if I want.
I learn something every single time you speak! I would highly recommend everyone get a consultation with David because he helped me in multiple consultations and the information blew my mind and transformed the way I mix instantly. Well worth the investment! Keep shining man! 🙏
Thanks brother! 🙏
Now that's an endorsement

And I just came from one of your videos recommending this channel....bless up
The Trim feature on Harrison Mixbus is why I love and use it
I've been a professional musician for over 47 years, and a studio owner for 20+ years. Although certified by Pro Tools, I've had no formal training. Just trial and error. This is by far "the BEST" instruction I've ever seen or heard regarding balancing a mix. Without a good/proper balance, a mix engineer will surely be fighting himself throughout the entire mixing process to get the tracks to to "play well" with each other.
There's no one, on UA-cam or else, who has given more or better information so consistently as you!
You make the perfect videos for the almost professionals who know what things are and how they work but might need a little more technique
What a great explanation! That information is gold for the people that are lerning. There is a reason why David is the best. Because he just fucking tell you what mixing is about. Congrats bro, your hard work and talent is incredible. God bless you
🙏🤘
I’m an artist and audio engineer from Toronto and this is my favourite channel ever! I enjoy all your videos they’re super helpful and fun to watch. Love you bro 🎶💯
Thanks David, I really like how you have wrapped up so many aspects very efficiently with this approach... very good
I did a mix over the weekend in which was the first time I actually mixed into a compressor. My crest factor was ALOT closer than ever b4 and yet I still maintained all my transients!!! Thanks for all the good tools and advice brother!
Bro for many years m producing and i really got to a complete order of the mix casue of u!! no matter what ive learned on socials ths is by far the most helpful !! thanks man!!
Simply the best channel for someone serious about mixing and mastering! Really useful, subtle and professional advice.
Just wow, simple, clear and straight to the point, this video should be shared and pinned on top of every mixing board
Really! Keep you off the gerbil wheel for sure
That song reminds me of early Prince! Great video as always David!
the best of youtube, simple as that.
thanks, always
This is the single most important video I’ve watched on this. Thank you.
Yeah ! Same here !!!🙏
David you definitely taught me the most of all the engineers on UA-cam. Your videos are always value!
Just wanted to randomly come by and say thanks again, Ive only just started doing automation in mixes. Thanks to you. Mixing this last tune has been much easier. For years, was a nightmare trying to get static levels and wondering why certain things are too loud for certain parts trying to find the perfect balance for a set and forget. No longer. lol.
Great! Thanks David :)
God those drums were properly tracked, they sound already super tasty. Would love to receive that quality material when I mix ! Cheers David, you 🤘🏻
This is one the of the best "practical " Tips video about Gain Staging. Not for technical stand point but also how to apply in real life mix situation. Thanks for your kind effort to make this video
You are a legend Dave this video and your channel works for any genre. I love rock/metal but I write darkwave electronic stuff. This has been helping me a lot 🤟🙏
probably one of your most important videos.
I wonder if its just a great reminder or a truly new thing. Respect to David!
New for anyone who didn't know. There are a lot of new subs on the channel
learned alot thanks mr MixbusTv 😎
Just bought this plugin, super psyched to use it. They have it on sale right now on the waves website.
What's the name of it?
Probably the best video on this subject on the web. Very grateful for having found this channel and your clear, no-BS explanations!
Thank you David, once again your explanation is right on with no bullshit.
So much sense....another gr8 vid
Simply the best out there! This is gold
Well, the light really off on this one. I have been working to record live into the 2 bus. The SSL Big Six and the Fusion will soon be dialed in with this new found discipline. "All roads lead to the 2 bus." Thank you David, for the insight.
🙌
Such an eye opener video. Thanks David!
Jokes aside. You are building your own dojo with these slices of pedagogical work. Thank you, honestly.
Best learning videos in UA-cam,thanks alot MixbusTV,god bless you !!
Hey Gain Staging is not a trick but a necessity. But as I stated in the comments section of another video: "Certain Plugins especially analog emulations Plugins need to see a certain amount of level to hit their sweet spot as well, so to just use just the input trim only of a plugin for gain staging the rough mix in my opinion is ill advised." There is a reason for Clip Gain and Trim/Gain Plugins. There's Gain Staging within and between plugins that have to be considered.
It's not that important.
@@WillyJunior What??
If you think there is any difference between using the input gain of any plugin vs using a trim before them, rethink. This is digital. Also, sweet spot? This is exactly how to hit "the sweet spot", given the fact that 99% of the time the "sweet spot" on plugins is absolute BS. This is not analog.
@@zachjarrett8730 read MixbusTv's reply...
Well if the emulation of analog gear doesn't have the sweet spot...why even make them or buy them.

Thanks David for being THE real deal.My mixes got to another level, using your knowledge.
Really REALLY useful video. Thanks a lot
This is becoming really precious to me! So much better this way.. thanks!
Nice tee shirt man.....Love those guys! V4 is my go to outside kick mic....and sometimes inside if I can fit it thru the hole!
you are a mix god
The initial balance is king
This is a great reminder. I really enjoy this channel.
Amazing.
Today I went to YT to find answers to questions like this, and here they are.
The most important information that will help me a lot in the future is that
when we adjust the instrument levels at the very beginning of mixing, it should actually stay that way, in terms of level-matching after eq and compression.
By the way, even if I have been using the SSL native channel strip for a long time,
I would like to hear your opinion about that plugin, especially the native SSL Bus comp. 2.
I hope you will see this comment and make a review ...
Kind regards Dave !!!
You explained so well sir
I've learned a lot from you over the years. Thanks for all you do!
Buying and starting to use analog gear while mixing is when I finally got gain staging ...because you have to, haha.
Same here, spend tons of time matching volumes on my 500 analog boxes, it's painful, but fun ;)
Exactly 😂😂😂
So you spent a fortune to learn the basics... smart.
Same bro. It took some time to learn no gain staging causes alot of clipping and distortion xd
Thank you for this....very helpful!
Thanks Champion!
As usual David: great video!
🙏
Awesome and very useful video David! Thank you so much
Now, that's THE way to go, really clear, focus and precise. Great video ! And all those instances of Shade ;-) ...
That's coming :)
Tip notch!
Everything on your channel is pure gold, thanks a lot brother !
This is interesting. I gain stage, set up my rough mix with the faders then put on the bus compressor. But with the way you set up the rough mix and gain stage at the same time, I can have even more precision with the faders.
Great knowledge here. One thing: For people brand new to mixing, mixing into compression isn’t probably the best way to start. You need to get a good understanding of both compression *and* gain staging before you can effectively mix into mixbus comp… I always recommend for folks new to mixing, first learn to mix without anything on the mixbus. Then move on to mixing into compression once they understand the basics. Some hardcore old school engineers claim you should never mix into compression, but i’m not one of them. It can he helpful with rock mixes, EDM or other more full/aggressive styles. But you need to know what you’re doing first, to get good results.
Great tutorial! Thanks
" I want the same exact level with and without compression". Right on.
This is crazy because a lot of guys say don't use a Compressor on a Masterbus! But I nethertheleless do it, because its how you say, I have the level and I can fit what I want into this! I like it!
A lot of guys who? Lol
@@mixbustv The producers around me! I do it my way, and I'm glad that I'm not wrong with it,😉!
Amazing! I have never thought about mixing like that, I'll definitely experiment with that!
Great info as usual bro. I'm trying to expand my mixing knowledge (to be able to mix my own music) and your content is very helpful.
cool to see you here bruh... Lol
I understood that gain staging could be a problem. Thanks for showing us an easy way to deal with it.
Thanks David!
Thank you very much!
This stuff is golden! I can't wait to learn everything I can from such a stellar engineer 😁
🙌🙏
Great vid!
Can’t wait for the part 2 of this video! I watched this one a few times already! Lol great info man
fabulous, clear and concise explanation of when, where, and why to level match
This video is incredible. Thanks David!
David just joined your channel cause I know you can bring me to my next level your awesome CALABOGIE Ontario Canada
Welcome to the membership Kevin!
Great video thanks!!
Thanks you for what you do
Excellent video David, definitely eye-opening and I learned something today.
🤘🏻🤘🏻
Top as usual my friend!
Amazing video as always, thank you David !
Great explanation and super helpful mixing tip 🖤
Thank you for the video.. I like your training method..
Thank you
Great video! Thank you sir
Hey David! Tell the man in the mirror that he's the best!
Nice ! This is the most overlooked part of mixing, especially by beginners .
Tell me about it.
Been “making” music as a hobby for over 10 years now,
tried to mix now and then, but mostly sent to engineers,
now I hope that I can do it myself and this video was an eye-opener.
Another excellent video as always David, thank you.
11:20 I dig that "no makeup gain when setting the 2-bus compressor" approach !
The best!
Very good advice
Just leveling makes a huge difference
Important video this one, wish I knew this earlier in my Career😆
Thanks man you always teach me so much. Didn’t even think to use the input of ssl for gain staging
This is great! Never tried to mix into 2bus settings. Definitely worth to try! Thx David
Bravo come sempre! TRUTH!
thank you so much....brilliant as allways
very informative! good stuff
Great video man. Short and to the point and i agree with everything you said. For people wondering, you can also do this with an IO for analog gear on your 2bus! Blessings my brother
number one concept with mixing ive learned. Level matching is too important!
That’s soooo helpful and clear. Appreciate that walk through... Cheers.
Youre a Gem bro
This is Awesome!!! Thanks for sharing
I enjoyed this tutorial. I follow a similar workflow. Yes, gain staging is crucial. I personally use Logic which has a great feature for leveling all tracks (or regions) in a single go. Thanks for sharing your thought process with us.
What feature do you mean?
@@jazzbass18 Normalize Region Gain (under Functions). You can choose either peaks or Lufs value. To access this feature, make sure the advanced tools are activated in the general Logic prefs.
@@danielpicard3994 Thanks, will try that. 👍🏽
This guy is top tier SUBBED
My man uses his API 2500 with identical settings to how I set it for most mixdowns. I never use the makeup gain either! The UAD one is killer and there's nothing quite like the stereo image with the linking/unlinking. Pulsar Mu is one of my next go-to compressors too!
Super helpful as always, thanks man
