    On vocals I also often automate my sends to delay & reverbs, to reduce or mute S, T, eHHH endings and stuff like that. Those often make a reverbtail ugly or a delay too present. With automation on your sends you can choose what vowel feeds the effects and what not.

    This seems to be the kind of trend in vocals we're seeing with Billie Eilish. Very, very quiet and intimate vocals that become difficult to capture. Interesting to see the different approaches to this and its challenges.

    Hey David, I dunno if somebody already mentioned it in the comments (TLDR) but if she eats an apple before recording that will probably get rid of most of the mouth noises at the source and you won't have to edit as much. I remember a big music producer mentioning this trick but i can't remember who he was... Great and helpful video as always :)

    Geez, I guess she don't really realize the work you do for this! Some of this Ozone bundle works quite well, but what I found that sometimes for vocals it removes also the good frequencies, so got to be very careful with them, also Accusonus ERA bundle does this job and I think better for some reason, they are more subtle, even more efficient with less artefacts!
    Keep it up with great work David..!

  • @soulchorea
    @soulchorea 4 роки тому

    I was taught a while back by an engineer that you can have the vocalist eat a few apple slices before recording - something about the enzymes in the apples that cuts a lot of the "mouth stickiness" that makes that click sound. Water/tea, etc. don't seem to be as effective. Make sure they're not allergic to apples first though 😬

    Awesome. Just finishing your mixing Hip Hop course on Pro Mix Academy (and sounding amazing!) Next job is a vocal recording for a mox with those nasty mouth smacks and clicks. I've used RX7 a little but this workflow is perfect for me right now. Thanks David! Matt

    Great Video. Song and Bella sound amazing! look forward too hearing and (not gonna lie) seeing more! ya'll are killing it.
    so... I'm mostly setup for recording at this point, not mixing so much, but i wanted to record a track of my ten year old daughter singing her favorite song, Lost Boys by Ruth B. for her birthday. And she sings insanely soft and quiet! i don't have izotope rx yet, and tried to automate all the breaths (worked great), sibilance (worked okay), and all the smacks, clicks, and plosives from her lips smacks. that last part not only drove me insane with editing time and effort, but also didn't really work that well. all kinds of pumping in her vocals. it was just way too much automation, too often. Izotope Rx was already on my must have plugin list for professional mixes, but HOLY CRAP... it just got moved to the absolute tippity top of my mix plugin list. I do like automating breaths though, it's really nice to have fine control with a beautiful soft singer's breaths. all Nora Jones and shit.

    Cool video. I swear-by RX7 for post-tracking vocal processing. I've gone deep to remove plosives and lispy sounds that some-of its features don't articulate control-of directly. I found myself looking at each spoken word like it was a form-of digital calligraphy. Lol.
    I had a question on your bit towards the end on editing breaths. As you played the examples, I could still hear some in the track. Was there a judgement call made on your behalf or hers to keep certain breaths still audible for performance capture? Follow-up question: Ever track/edit vocals like that with all breaths taken completely out of the mix? Good/bad? Thanks.

  • @Hassan_Omer

    The noise and low mid resonances in the vocals, are they in the recording because of not having good acoustics in the vocal room ? or is it because they were recorded very low ? 2ndly is there a specific reason for automating the breaths , why not use waves debreathe for that ?

      I imagine in edition to resonance a lot of the low end build up is due to the proximity effect of being so close to capture such quite vocals.

    You should buy an SE Dynamite for your SM7B when recording away from the studio and your preamp hiss will be a thing of the past! They are better than Cloudlifters or Fetheads even.

    • @musicmarcom8973
      @musicmarcom8973 5 років тому

      Noooo! Don't do it! Get a Cloudlifter. Since the Dynamite is not direct coupled like the Cloudlifter, it will add noise and color to your signal with its cheap transformer.

    • @clintonmaher6930
      @clintonmaher6930 5 років тому

      @@musicmarcom8973 I think that's a bit short sighted..SE have a good reputation and as the owner of a Cloudlifter, Fethead and a Dynamite I'd say the Dynamite is the best of the 3. Slightly more gain even than the other two, dead quiet and no detectable adjustment to the tone. Numerous reviews and tests done on it would back me up there by the way. Not saying Cloudlifters are bad but they are a touch overpriced and the Dynamite is easily as good.

    • @bmcconnon
      @bmcconnon 5 років тому

      @@clintonmaher6930 I've used them both as well and while the Dynamite was a touch louder, to my ears it added color. That makes sense since it is not direct coupled. Color sounds good on some things, but usually you want to hear more of your mic and not color from the booster. If anything, you want the color from a great mic or high-end preamp. On pricing, there is a reason Cloudlifter "alternatives" are cheaper, they are made in China using cheap components. The Dynamite is round and plastic, so you either connect it to the end of your mic (ugly) or put in on the floor and risk stepping on it and breaking it. The Cloudlifter is all metal, made in the USA and comes with a lifetime warranty.

    Hi David, good info, nice voice. As an alternative for mouth de-clicking I higly recommend "Spiff" by oeksound. I have the feeling it will give you even better results. It has more control options than the izotope plugin . . .and it's also possible to add body to a voice if wanted. To tame the resonant frequencies in the mids "Soothe" works very well [also for the esssses], you probably know that plugin already , same company
