Stewartstown RR NRHS Fan Trip

- A trip over the Stewartstown RR on October 22, 1960. Power for the trip is #9, while #6 is also seen backing into the enginehouse after being on display. Some of the tour group boards the PRR train to Baltimore at the end of the film. Note the conductor waving a frantic washout as the train approaches. I think the engineer wasn't expecting passengers and overshot the station stop, as they reversed to pick them up. Sounds added from my video collection.

The farm houses, barns, and buildings still exist today along the SRR. In Stewartstown where the large mill was across the passenger station is now a Rutters gas station. The Hungerford station also still exists as does the buildings the SRR served with the CNW boxcar (although they are abandoned). The switch to the elevated track spur to the wire factor also still exists (it's now apartments). The REA at the Hungerford station was not closed until 1971. The area was much nicer before Walmart, cookie cutter housing tracts and condos went in during the 2000s. Hurricane Agnes in 1972 killed the NCRR. It's now gone south to Maryland and northward to York is a tourist train.
I can’t believe there’s footage of the NCR back when it was still in service!
Love this video. Has to be early 60’s. #9 was purchased in 1960 and it has our paint scheme, but “Mighty Mo” wasn’t painted on yet. Also #6 has its ‘early’ paint scheme. #9 is still in service at Stewartstown and #6 is at my house getting restored. Can’t wait to get 6 back on its home rails!!!
Thanks. I've updated the description with your info, thanks for watching.
@@fmnut It took some digging, but the exact date was October 22, 1960. Thank you so much for posting this video.
Aha, so YOU'RE the person restoring 6. I'd love to hear the story of how that came to be. What are your plans for 6?
@@markkoppenhaver5366 I re-updated with the correct date. Thanks for digging it up.

Hey Jeff.
Yep that’s me. I bought #6 from the Silver Lake RR. The owner was reluctant to sell. He only sold it to me because of my intentions to restore it to service hauling trains on the Stewartstown. But, yes it’s here. Making good progress. The original engine is too far gone, sadly.
I’m installing a more modern Cummins engine. So much work to do. Hope to have it back home next year. Making progress every day!!!!
We were there a few months back. That Pennsy position light signal in New Freedom still stands, though heavily vandalized. So does the engine house in Stewartstown…with that odd shaped door. Very nice content; thank you so very much for posting.
The PRR style signal that is now in New Freedom is not original. A rail fan installed a replica in the early 1990s. The switch to turn it on and light it up is inside the gift shop.
RR fan trips are always fun to watch. No matter how old they are! ❤
Thank you so much for sharing this film!
excellent. thanks for sharing
Gondola ride. Yowza.
Yes, it had to be the late 50's. The little kids on board would be just about my age (70) now. I was born in 1952.
Absolutely tremendous.
What'up~ splendid ,catch you later. :)
Nicely done. The area has changed so much now.
Update from a Baltimore Chapter NRHS archivist:
This trip was run by the Baltimore Chapter NRHS on October 22, 1960.
Quote: OCT 22, 1960 Plymouth #9 w/ 2 gondolas & 1 boxcar. Optional connection w/PRR trains #s 571 [Buffalo Day Express] & 554 [I suspect this is a typo as no train of that number stopped in New Freedom in 1960].
Thanks for the research.
We have additional information on this film and trip.
PRR train 554, shown stopping at New Freedom, would have left Harrisburg at 2:40 and York at 3:26 pm that afternoon, scheduled for a 5:00 PM arrival in Baltimore's Pennsylvania Station. It was NOT scheduled for a stop at New Freedom, which explains the engineer "forgetting" to stop at perhaps 4:00 PM! Someone evidently with pull arranged for a flag-stop at New Freedom. Notes by Chapter member Bob Janssen indicated the train still arrived in Baltimore on time in spite of the special stop.
Janssen also notes the following Chapter members were among those on the outing: Emil Graison (not sure of spelling), Charles Schaeffer, Connie Shoemaker, George Boyton, John Thomsen, Frank Tosh, Dick Myers, Charlie Whittle, and Bill Blaksle. Bob J. rode in the box car almost the whole trip' he's the guy on left at 3: 25 or so, not playing with the dog.
I hope you the best success. You should look into using a service such as Promo sm.
