  • A while back I acquired a DVD of film transfers taken by the late Reverend Kovacs from the Scranton-Wilkes Barre area, as well as a few scenes outside the area. The original transfer was done almost 40 years ago so is not the best, but I felt the subject matter was important enough to do an edit with.
    Again, sounds are dubbed in. Thanks to Walt Berko of Railroad Video for the source material. Enjoy!

    Cool! At the very end you can see STEGMAIER trucks leaving the brewery in Wilkes Barre. Great CNJ and LV shots.. thanks for sharing this!

    The Rev. Kovacs had a great eye for capturing the essence of each operation in the area. Each shot is so interesting, one is soon focusing on the equipment, operations and somewhat familiar to me locations and one almost forgets the distraction of the color shift and lack of clarity. The dubbed-in sound was a plus here, and the seeing the Wanamie lokies in operation was an added treat. Thanks to the late Rev. for his efforts and to you for preserving and sharing them with us.

    The last couple seconds showed just how much Wilkes Barre had changed in the last 60 years

    That was terrific! The last 2-3 minutes have a favorite CNJ locomotive of mine: the SD35s in the 2500 series!

      The CNJ 2500-series SD35s were acquired to replace the Alco RSD5s, some of which were in the wreck at Laurel Run, and also on the wreck train that was picking up the mess. The RSDs later worked the Allentown hump prior to Conrail.

    Very nice vids, whats even cooler is that Signal at 22:32 is still standing today. If your in wilkes barre passing by the old station just look around and you'll see it.

    I’m not familiar with a lot of the locations that fmnut has featured in their UA-cam videos but I sure do appreciate the time and efforts they have put into posting these videos. With that said I sure love viewing the motive power and freight in these videos from especially the 1960’s. Thank you.

    Great sound, especially at 9:38 with the open cab door. 😃

      I needed the sound of an Alco working hard recorded inside the cab. Finally found what I needed in a video of an Indian Railways WDM2 cab ride. Glad you found it appropriate to the film.

    The Delaware & Hudson railroad also served the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area which was left out. 7 members of my family on my late paternal grandmother’s side worked for the Lehigh Valley railroad out of Coxton Yard. My great grandfather Stephen Kearney, 4 grand uncles & 2 second cousins worked for the Lehigh Valley railroad between the late 1860’s & up to the start of Conrail in 1976. I used to see Lehigh Valley, Erie Lackawanna & Delaware & Hudson freights when I used to visit Pittston.

      D&H is briefly covered from 4:36 to 5:38 with scenes at Hudson Yard. Guess you missed that.....

    seriously nice post there. Fallen flag locos, Alcos, and that derailment footage was particularly interesting, even with no information about date, location etc. Nice dubbing job too.

      Believe it may be in Laurel Run just east of WB. That's where the mine fire is too. They had a bad derailment in the 60s.

    Great footage of several favorites. Only way it could get better is if Mike Bednar was narrating the clips.

    Great stuff! Thanks for posting. Where is the location at 9:45, where the photographer is riding a LV freight and goes over a two-track deck bridge?

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  3 роки тому

      Just south of White Haven PA at the top of the Lehigh Gorge.

  • @ikonseesmrno7300

    That was nice. I haven't seen a whole lot of LV & CNJ freight service before this, so that's a real treat. What do you have for info on that wreck? Almost looks like an RDC got squished in that one.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  3 роки тому +1

      The derailment happened at Laurel Run interlocking on Dec. 26, 1965, shortly after the joint CNJ/LV operating agreement took effect. It was a head on collision between a CNJ freight coming upgrade and an LV freight going downgrade. Official reports list the cause as dispatcher error. Two brand new L&HR C420's being delivered from Alco were in the consist of the CNJ train. They were returned to Alco and rebuilt.

    Why is Jersey Central Lines abbreviated as CNJ instead of JCL? Wes it called Central New Jersey Lines or something in the past?

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  3 роки тому +5

      The official name of the railroad was Central Railroad of New Jersey, with the reporting marks CNJ. The phrase "Jersey Central Lines" came after World War II when the CNJ became operationally independent of the Reading Company. It was at this time the "Miss Liberty" logo was adopted.
