So, a small bit of helpful advice. Wrap some duct tape around those tongs. You're cutting up the snakes skin. A few that hunt with me, are the same. I Love these creatures. They behave very well if you respect everything about them.

That’s the exact reason we use hooks instead of tongs. The hunter using tongs is new to the sport and just learning the ropes

I've been doing this a while. Stop belittling folks that use tongs.
I started using flat tongs this year and have had much success catching snakes that I would have missed with a hook..
      People misuse hooks, too.
Learn to properly use your tools, both have a place in snake handling.

@@CentralPaOutdoorsmenI see no reason that the "hunter" who is new to the "sport" can't use tongs that have the jaws wrapped in tape to protect the snakes' skin.

Tongs vs hooks is a debate that will go on forever. I have never used tongs but I’m sure it is easier to grab a snake with them in many different circumstances than it is with a hook. With that being said I also believe that no snake is worth injuring in order to grab it. As long as you are using the appropriate tongs and using the right technique and respecting the snake I don’t see a problem with using tongs

The hunter has since put shrink wrap tubbing over the ends until the end of the season when next year he will get a hook or more appropriate tongs like the gentle giants
